LaC2 (with doublet and quartet states) and LaC2+ (with singlet and triplet states) cluster have been studied by using the B3LYP (Becke three-parameter/Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional method and the HF (Hartree-Fock) method with LANLIDZ basis set. For each cluster, four possible isomers in C-2v, C-s, C-proportional to v and D-proportional to h symmetries have been investigated. The results indicate that structures in C-s symmetry are local minima in all cases and, in most cases (particularly for high spin states), our initial guess in C-s symmetry converges to structures in C-2v symmetry. For the isomers in C-2v, C-proportional to v and D-proportional to h symmetries, local minima were found to be dependent on the method and spin state. The two clusters may also exist as linear chains. The ordering of the binding energies for the isomers in all spin states is C-s similar to C-2v < C-proportional to v < D-proportional to h. The ionization potential of LaC2 is reported as well. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

compatibilizing effect of graft copolymer, linear low density polyethylene-g-polystyrene (LLDPE-g-PS), on immiscible blends of LLDPE with styrene-butadiene-styrene triblock copolymer (SBS) has been investigated by means of C-13 CPMAS n.m.r. and d.s.c. techniques. The results indicate that LLDPE-g-PS is an effective compatibilizer for LLDPE/SBS blends. It was found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect two immiscible components, LLDPE and SBS, through solubilization of chemically identical segments of LLDPE-g-PS into the amorphous region of LLDPE acid PS block domain of SBS, respectively. It was also found that LLDPE-g-PS chains connect the crystalline region of LLDPE by isomorphism, with serious effects on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE. The effect of LLDPE-g-PS on the supermolecular structure of LLDPE in the LLDPE/SBS blends obviously depends on the composition of the blends, but has little dependence on the PS grafting yields of LLDPE-g-PS. LaC3n+ (n = 0, 1, 2) clusters have been studied using B3LYP (Becke 3-parameter-Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional method. The basis set is Dunning/ Huzinaga valence double zeta for carbon and [2s2p2d] for lanthanum, denoted LANL1DZ. Four isomers are presented for each cluster; two of them are edge binding isomers with C-2 upsilon symmetry, the other two are Linear chains with C-infinity upsilon symmetry. Meanwhile, two spin states for each isomer, that is, singlet and triplet for LaC3+, doublet and quartet for LaC3 and LaC32+, respectively, are also considered. Geometries, vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities, and other quantities are reported and discussed. The results indicate that at some spin states; the C-2 upsilon symmetry isomers are the dominant structures, while for the other spin states, linear isomers are energetically favored. Three comb polymers (CP) based on modified alternating methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo-oxyethylene side chains of the type -O(CH2CH2O)(n)CH3 were synthesized and characterized, and the ionic conductivity of CP/salt complexes is reported. The conductivity of these complexes was about 10(-5)-10(-6) S cm(-1) at room temperature. The conductivity, which displayed non-Arrhenius behaviour, was analysed using the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation. The conductivity maxima appear at lower salt concentration, when CP has longer side chains. Infrared (i.r.) was used to study the cation-polymer interaction. I.r. results also indicate that the ester in CP might decompose at 140 degrees C and reproduce the maleic anhydride ring. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Comb-like polymers (CPs) based on modified alternating methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo(oxyethylene) side chains of the type -O(CH2CH2O)(n)CH3 were synthesized and characterized, and complexed with lithium salts to form amorphous polymer electrolytes. Maximum conductivity close to 1.38 x 10(-4) S/cm was achieved at room temperature and at a [Li]/[EO] ratio (EO = ethylene oxide) of about 0.066. The temperature dependence of ionic conductivity suggested that the ion transport was controlled by segmental motion of the polymer, shown by linear curves obtained in Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher plots. The ionic conductivity maximum moved to a higher salt concentration as the temperature increased, indicating that a larger number of charge carriers can be transferred through polymer chains, of which free volume is increased at higher temperature. IR results indicated that the ester in CPs might decompose at 140 degrees C and reproduce the maleic anhydride ring.

The aggregation slate of polyimide in solution and in the solid state were studied using the NMR and fluorescence techniques. The experiment results show that the decay of spin-spin relaxation of polyimides with concentration can be described as a single exponential, biexponential, triexponential, biexponential profile. Meanwhile, the intensities of fluorencence spectra increase rapidly with the concentration, and some peaks have a red-shift. Based upon these experiment results, it can be concluded that polyimide in solution is very flexible, and there are several critical concentrations at which polyimide has distinctly different aggregation states. The existence of intermolecular charge transfer interaction between polyimide chains has been proved, and the interaction has a profound effect on the glass transition temperature, T-g, and the dynamic mechanical modulus of polyimide. The thermal properties and crystalline structure of the amphiphilic graft copolymers CR-g-PEG600, CR-g-PEG2000, and CR-g-PEG6000 using chloroprene rubber (CR) as the hydrophobic backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights as the hydrophilic side chains were studied by DSC and WAXD. The results showed that a distinct phase-separated structure existed in CR-g-PEGs because of the incompatibility between the backbone segments and the side-chain segments. For all the polymers studied, T-m2, which is the melting point of PEG crystalline domains in CR-g-PEG, decreased compared to that of the corresponding pure PEG and varied little with PEG content. For CR-g-PEG600 and CR-g-PEG2000, T-m1, which is the melting point of the CR crystalline domains, increased with increasing PEG content when the PEG content was not high enough, and at constant PEG content, the longer were the PEG side chains the higher was the T-m1. The crystallite size L-011 of CR in CR-g-PEGs increased compared to that of the pure CR and decreased with increasing PEG content. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A new kind of amphiphilic polyether dendrimer bearing eight alkyl chains at the periphery were synthesized step by step using the convergent method. Their structures were confirmed by FT-IR spectra, H-1 NMR spectra and mass spectra etc. The pi-A isotherms, hysteresis and molecular area-time curves at air water interface were reported. These results showed that they could form stable monolayers at water surface.

A comb polymer with oligo-oxyethylene side chains of the type -(CH2CB2O)(12)CH3 was prepared from methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer and poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether. The polymer can dissolve LiClO4 salt to form homogeneous amorphous polymer electrolyte. The ac ion conduction was measured using the complex impedance method, and conductivities were investigated as functions of temperatures and salt concentration. The complexes were first found to have two classes of glass transition which increase with increasing salt content, The optimum conductivity attained at 25 degrees C is in the order of 5.50 x 10(-6)Scm(-1). IR spectroscopy was used to study the cation-polymer interaction.

C-13 and H-1 relaxation times were measured as a function of temperature in two magnetic fields for dilute solutions of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C) in deuterated chloroform. The spin-lattice relaxation times were interpreted in terms of segmental motion characterized by the sharp cutoff model of Jones and Stockmayer (J. S. model). The phenyl group rotation is treated as a stochastic diffusion by the J. S. model. The restricted butterfly motion of the phenyl group attached to the cardo ring in PES-C is mentioned but is not discussed in detail in this work. Correlation times for the segmental motion are in the picosecond range which indicates the high flexibility of PES-C chains. The correlation time for the phenyl group internal rotation is similar to that of the segmental motion. The temperature dependence of these motions is weak. The apparent activation energy of the motions considered is less than 10 kJ/mol. The simulating results for PES are also reasonable considering the differences in structure compared with PES-C. The correlation times and the apparent activation energy obtained using the J. S. model for the main chain motion of PES-C are the same as those obtained using the damped orientational diffusion model and the conformational jump model.

The ESR of PPy films doped with Co (W2O7)(6)(10-) and CuW12O406- ions were reported and discussed. Results show that heteropolyanions not only play the role of neutralizing electricity in the PPy film, but also interact with the PPy molecular chain to form some adducts. The adducts affect the electronic structure of the PPy film and are unstable at more positive or more negative potentials. Dysonian ESR lineshape was recorded for the dry PPy film with CuW12O406- for the first time.

Three kinds of high-performance polyimides 1 (poly(ketone-imide) PKI), 2 (poly(ether-imide) PEI) and 3 (poly(oxy-imide) POI) were studied using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The NMR spectra of the polyimides were assigned according to the comprehensive consideration of the substitution effect of different substituting groups, viz. distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer (DEPT), no nuclear Overhauser effect (NNE), analysis of relaxation time, and two-dimensional correlated spectroscopy (COSY) techniques. The structural units of these three polyimides were determined. Carbon-13 and proton relaxation times for PEI and PKI were interpreted in terms of segmental motion characterized by the sharp cutoff model of Jones and Stockmayer (JS model) and anisotropic group rotation such as phenyl group rotation and methyl group rotation. Correlation times for the main-chain motion are in the tens of picosecond range which indicates the high flexibility of polyimide chains. Correlation times for phenyl group and methyl group rotations are more than 1 order of magnitude lower and approximately 1 order of magnitude higher than that of the main chain, respectively.

The effects of mechanical alloying on the solubility in a Ag-Gd solid solution have been investigated. The study shows that the solubility of Gd in Ag can be extended to about 5 at. % Gd by mechanical alloying from the equilibrium solubility of less than 0.95 at. % Gd. Ag85Gd15 prepared by mechanical alloying exhibits a spin-glass-type transition at similar to 5 K. A Curie-Weiss behavior at higher temperatures and x-ray patterns of the material indicate that Gd atoms are either dissolved in the Ag matrix or in the form of small clusters of diameters of a few nanometers;
