Kulttuurin merkitys spekulatiivisen fiktion kääntämisessä

Tutkielma käsittelee kulttuurin merkitystä spekulatiivisessa fiktiossa eli sitä, miten genre vaikuttaa tekstin kulttuurisidonnaisten kohtien kääntämiseen. Spekulatiivinen fiktio käsitetään usein lähes irralliseksi siitä kulttuurista, jossa se on syntynyt. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kuitenkin osoittaa, ettei näin ole. Spekulatiivinen fiktio ei ole siis erillinen syntykulttuuristaan, vaan vaikutussuhde on itse asiassa molemminpuolinen: kulttuuri ottaa paitsi vaikutteita, mutta myös sanastoa spekulatiivisesta fiktiosta. Koska spekulatiivinen fiktio on erityisesti Suomessa terminä uudehko, sen määritteleminen on olennainen osa tutkimusta. Spekulatiivisen fiktion yhteneväisyyksiä ja eroavaisuuksia aiempiin genreihin, kuten tieteiskirjallisuuteen ja fantasiakirjallisuuteen, käsitellään tutkimuksen alkuosassa. Spekulatiivisen fiktion määrittelyn yhteydessä referoidaan Heather Urbanskin ’painajaismalleja’, joihin spekulatiivisen fiktion teokset voidaan lajitella sen mukaan, millaisia syntykulttuurinsa pelkoja ja kauhuskenaarioita ne kuvastavat. Jälkimmäinen osa keskittyy kulttuurin merkitykseen spekulatiivisessa fiktiossa ja siihen, miten mahdolliset viittaukset teoksen lähdekulttuurin vaikuttavat käännösten tulkintaan. Tutkimuksen kaunokirjallisina lähdeteksteinä toimivat kolme Johanna Sinisalon suomenkielistä novellia ja niiden englanninkieliset käännökset, sekä Hannu Rajaniemen englanninkielinen romaani The Quantum Thief ja sen suomennos. Molemmat kirjailijat ovat suomenkielisiä, mutta Sinisalo kirjoittaa omalla äidinkielellään suomeksi kun taas Rajaniemi kirjoittaa englanniksi. Tästä syystä kohdeyleisön ja -kulttuurin erot tulevat esille heidän teoksiaan verrattaessa. Tämän tutkimuksen perusteella on selvää, että myös spekulatiivisen fiktion kaltaisessa, reaalimaailmasta irrallisessa genressä alkuperäisteoksen lähdekulttuurilla on merkitystä. Jos käännöstä tehtäessä ei oteta huomioon kulttuurisidonnaisia tekijöitä kuten alluusioita ja reaalioita, käännöksen lukija menettää ainakin osan teoksen taustalla olevista merkityksistä ja saattaa jopa hämmentyä epäselvistä viittauksista. Spekulatiivisen fiktion tutkimus on Suomessa vasta alkutekijöissään ja erityisesti suomalaisten kirjoittajien teokset jäävät helposti ulkomaisten, tunnetumpien kirjailijoiden varjoon. Myös spekulatiivisen fiktion ja kulttuurin välinen yhteys ansaitsisi tarkempaa perehtymistä laajemmalla aineistolla.

10-year old boys are writing texts in a National Test in the spring of 2009. The aim of this study is to increase knowledge in and understanding of boys’ writing skills through description, analysis and interpretation of the texts produced by the boys in the National Test in Swedish for junior level year three, taken in Sweden in 2009. The material consists of texts produced by boys and is focused on their ability to write. Through avoiding relating to texts produced by girls, it is possible to search, review, interpret and observe without simultaneously comparing the two genders. The aim of the test is to measure writing proficiency from a normative perspective, while I am investigating content, reception, awareness, and other aspects relevant when producing text. Genres are described through the instruction given in the test, which defines the work that takes place in the classroom and thereby my approach to the analysis. The latter is focused on finding patterns in the competence of the students rather than looking for flaws and limitations. When competence is searched for beyond the relationship to syllabi or the demands of the test in itself, the boys’ texts from the test provide a general foundation for investigating writing proficiency. Person, place and social group have been removed from the texts thereby avoiding aspects of social positioning. The texts are seen from the perspective of 10-year old boys who write texts in a National Test. The theoretical basis as provided by Ivaničs (2004; 2012) offers models for theory on writing. A socio-cultural viewpoint (Smidt, 2009; Säljö, 2000) including literacy and a holistic view on writing is found throughout. By the use of abdicative logic (see 4.4) material and theory work in mutual cooperation. The primary method hermeneutics (Gadamer 1997) and analytical closereading (Gustavsson, 1999) are used dependent on the requirements of the texts. The thesis builds its foundation through the analysis from theoretically diverse areas of science. Central to the thesis is the result that boys who write texts in the National Test, are able to write in two separate genres without conversion or the creating hybrids between the two. Furthermore, the boys inhibit extensive knowledge about other types of texts, gained from TV, film, computers, books, games, and magazines even in such a culturally bound context as a test. Texts the boy has knowledge of through other situations can implicitly be inserted in his own text, or be explicitly written with a name of the main character, title, as well as other signifiers. These texts are written to express and describe what is required in the topic heading of the test. In addition other visible results of the boys’ ability to write well occur though the multitude of methods for analysis throughout the thesis which both search, and find writing competence in the texts written by the boys.

August Ahlqvist A. Oksanen f. 7.8.1826 i Kuopio d. 20.11.1889 i Helsingfors August Ahlqvist är känd inte bara som författare och diktare, utan också som översättare, professor i finska språket och litteraturen samt rektor vid Helsingfors universitet. Ahlqvist hade en stor och mångsidig betydelse för det finska språkets och den finska kulturens utveckling under 1840-1880-talen. Många av de texter han publicerade under namnet A. Oksanen är de första i sin genre på det finska språket. Han gav t.ex. ut den första sonetten, konstballaden, landsskapssången, promotionsdikten och reseskildringen på finska. De mest kända av Oksanens texter är landskapssången ”Savolaisen laulu” (”Savolaxarens sång”), balladen ”Koskenlaskijan morsiamet” (”Forsfararens brudar”) samt ”Sotamarssi” (”Krigsmarsch”), skriven till minne av slaget vid Porrassalmi. Gummerus, Karl Jakob

Karl Jakob Gummerus f. 13.4.1840 i Karleby d. 20.3.1898 i Helsingfors Karl Jakob Gummerus var en av de mest lästa finskspråkiga författarna under 1860- och 1870-talen, och samtidigt verksam som framgångsrik förläggare. Förlaget K.J. Gummerus, som han grundade tillsammans med sin hustru Gustava, gav i tidens folkbildande anda ut finskspråkig litteratur. Det första utgivna verket på förlaget var Gummerus egna Ylhäiset ja alhaiset (sv. Hög och låg), som baserade sig på texter utgivna som följetonger i tidningar. Detta verk som gavs ut år 1870 kan ses som den första romanen skriven på finska, även om Aleksis Kivis Sju bröder (Seitsemän veljestä) utgavs samma år. Gummerus övriga litterära produktion bestod av det han själv kallade ”uuteloita”. Paul and death : a study in psychological coping

The present investigation looks into the attitudes toward death in Paul’s authentic letters, and puts them in relation to modern theories of psychological coping. Drawing on psychologically-oriented hermeneutic theory, and theories about psychological coping in particular, I argue that each case of psychological coping must be understood in its historical situation as strategies emanating from a specific person’s subjective appraisal (cf. Pargament, Lazarus and Folkman). Paul’s letters frequently refer to persecution and violent death. To aid in psychological coping is often integral to the purpose of the letters, which makes the perspective of psychological coping akin to their genre. In the course of a tentatively assumed chronological order of 1 Thessalonians, Galatians, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Romans, Philippians, and Philemon, Paul moves from the perception of Jesus dying for the faithful to the understanding of dying with Jesus. His coping strategies concerning death are gradually transformed from conservative and deferring coping styles, to a more self-directing coping style, to collaborative and transformative coping styles, and finally to a new sense of deferring coping style in prison. The last case of deferring coping carries the traits of generosity and flexibility even in the face of death, which is in contrast to his previous letters. Through his correspondence, we see Paul’s attitude toward death transformed from denial to reaction, to processing, to acceptance (cf. Lindemann, Kübler-Ross, Bowlby, Parkes, among others). His strategies also shift in accordance with these understandings. Denial is accompanied by diversion, threat by aggression, processing by rumination, and acceptance by joy. The study shows the hermeneutic benefits of reading Paul’s letters as the rhetorically framed expressions of a person in a particular historical situation. The letters open small windows through which we can glimpse the coping process of a person of antiquity. In adopting the method of psychological exegesis, the study shows that the variety of attitudes toward death in Paul’s letters makes sense from the perspective of psychological coping. The psychological aspect of these letters is an underexamined richness that can extend into areas of contemporary individual and group identity, and from there to public policy and ethics.

Sedimentology and micromorphology of drumlin sediments at Chimney Bluffs State Park, New York, United States of America

The drumlin sediments at Chimney Bluffs, New York appear to represent a block-inmatrix style glacial melange. This melange comprises sand stringers, lenses and intraclasts juxtaposed in an apparently massive diamicton. Thin section examination of these glacigenic deposits has revealed microstructures indicative of autokinetic subglacial defonnation which are consistent with a deformable bed origin for the diamicton. These features include banding and. necking of matrix grains, oriented plasma fabrics and the formation of pressure shadows at the long axis ends of elongate clasts. Preservation of primary stratification within the sand intraclasts appears to suggest that these features were pre-existing up-ice deposits that were frozen, entrained, then deposited as part of a defonning till layer beneath an advancing ice sheet. Multi-directional micro-shearing within the sand blocks is thought to reflect the frozen nature of the sand units in such a high strain environment. It is also contended that dewatering of the sediment pile leading to the eventual immobilisation of the defonning till layer was responsible for opening sub-horizontal fissures within the diamicton. These features were subsequently infilled with mass flow poorly sorted sands and silts which were subjected to ductile defonnation during the waning stages of an actively deforming till layer. Microstructures indicative of the dewatering processes in the sand units include patches of fine-grained particles within a coarser-grained matrix and the presence of concentrated zones of translocated clays. However, these units were probably confined within an impermeable diamicton casing that prevented massive pore water influxes from the deforming till layer~ Hence, these microstructures probably reflect localised dewatering of the sand intraclasts. A layered subglacial shear zone model is proposed for the various features exhibited by the drumlin sediments. The complexity of these structures is explained in terms of ii superposing deformation styles in response to changing pore water pressures. Constructional glaciotectonics, as implied by the occurrence of sub-horizontal fissuring, is suggested as the mechanism for the stacking of the sand intraclast units within the diamicton. The usefulness of micromorphology in complimenting the traditional sedimentology of glacigenic deposits is emphasised by the current study. An otherwise massive diamicton was shown to contain microstructures indicative of the very high strain rates expected in a complexly deforming till layer. . It is quite obvious from this investigation that the classification of diamictons needs to be re-examined for evidence of microstructures that could lead to the re-interpretation of diamicton forming processes. Des structures microscopique comprennent l'evidence pour la defonnation intrinseque attribuee a l'origine lit non resistant du drumlin. PreselVation des structures primaires au coeur des blocs arenaces suggere que ceux sont des depots preexistant qui furent geles, entraines et par la suite sedimentes au milieu d'une couche de debris sous-glaciaires en voie de deformation. Des failles microscopiques a l'interieur des blocs arenaces appuient aussi l'idee d'un bloc cohesif (c'est-a-dire gele) au centre d'un till non resistant. Des implications significatives s'emergent de cette etude pour les conditions sous-glaciaire et les processus de la formation des drumlin.

Buddy films and gender identity : representing the bonds of masculinity /

The study examines the buddy film genre and the representation of masculinity in relation to the homosocial and the homoerotic. As a genre, the buddy films focus on male relationships, thematically seeking to mediate the boundaries surrounding the homosocial continuum and the intimacy and eroticism implicit in male bonding. Theories of genre, gender and identity are used to analyze the construction of masculine identity within the films. By providing a qualitative analysis of films from the 1960s to contemporary times, the research establishes a relationship between social changes, attitudes toward men and depictions of men. The buddy films adapt to address changes in the representation of masculinity, embodied in the difference between the male couple in the films. The early films of the 1960s served as templates that deconstructed traditional representations of male identity through articulating the tension within homosocial relationships. However, in the later films this tension became a refle~ive convention, acting to undermine the eroticism onto a displaced Other. The buddy film genre highlights the tension inherent to the male masquerade. This tension is situated in the need to represent the protagonist's homosocial relationship, while disavowing the eroticism that surrounds homosocial bonding. The structure of the buddy film genre, which focuses on the exploration of masculinity and representing the bonds of homosocial intimacy, makes these films a significant site for investigating the cultural construction of masculine identities.
