The amplified spontaneous emission and gain characteristics of various fluorescent dyes, 2-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-6(2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1,1,7,7-tetramethyl-1H,5H-benzo[ij] quinolizin-9-1)ethenyl)-4H-pyran-4-ylidene) propanedinitrile (DCJTB) and 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethyl-aminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), doped in polystyrene (PS) matrices were studied and compared. It was found that DCJTB has a larger net gain, 40.72 cm(-1), a lower loss, 2.49 cm(-1), and a lower threshold, 0.16 (mJ/pulse)/cm(2), than DCM, which has a net gain of 11.95 cm(-1), a loss of 9.25 cm(-1), and a threshold of 4(mJ/pulse)/cm(2). The improvement of performance in DCJTB PS films is attributed to the larger free volume of DCJTB caused by the introduction of steric spacer groups into the DCJTB molecule.

Erbium-doped BaF2 nanoparticles were prepared from the microemulsion of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), n-butanol, n-octane and water. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were indexed to a pure BaF2 cubic phase. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that BaF2 products were monodispersed with 15-20 nm in size at the dopant concentration of 0.06 mol%. At higher dopant concentration, there was no significant increase in particle size, but more polydispersed. Photoluminescence (PL) properties of the final products were examined. We can observe fluorescence of Er3+ around 1540 nm and with the increase of dopant concentration, the fluorescent intensity increases.

The micelle formation of a series of amphiphilic block copolymers in aqueous and NaCl solutions was studied by a fluorescent probe technique using pyrene as a 'model drug'. These copolymers were synthesized from poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and L-lactide by a new calcium ammoniate catalyst. They had fixed PEG block lengths (44, 104 or 113 ethylene oxide units) and various poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) block lengths (15-280 lactide units). The critical micelle concentration (cmc) was found to decrease with increasing PLLA content. The distinct dissimilarity of the cmc values of diblock and triblock copolymers based on the same block length of PEG provided evidence for the different configurations of their micelles. It was also observed that the introduction of NaCl salt significantly contributed to a decrease in the cmcs of the copolymers with short PEG and PLLA blocks, while it had less influence on the cmcs of copolymers with long PEG or PLLA blocks. The dependence of partition coefficients ranging from 0.2x10(5) to 1.9x10(5) on the PLLA content in the copolymer and on the micelle configuration was also discussed.

An efficient white light-emitting polymer was developed with blue polyfluorene (PFO) chemically doped with orange fluorescent 1, 8-naphthalimide moieties. The emission spectrum can be easily tuned by varying the content of 1, 8-naphthalimide moieties. A white polymeric light-emitting diode (WPLED) with a structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/the complex of (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT)/polymer/Ca/Al showed a current efficiency of 5.3 cd/A and a power efficiency of 2.8 Lm/W at 6 V with the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates at (0.25,0.35). Moreover, the WPLED from the copolymer showed a very stable white light emission at different driving voltage and brightness. The CIE coordinates of the WPLED were (0.25, 0.35), (0.26, O.36), and (0.26, 0.36) under driving voltages of 6, 8, and 10 V, corresponding to the brightness of 82, 3555, and 7530 cd/m(2), respectively. This approach for realization of white light emission is promising over the polymer blending system in terms of both efficiency and color stability.

Calcium lanthanide oxyborate doped with rare-earth ions LnCa(4)O(BO3)(3):RE3+ (LnCOB:RE, Ln = Y, La, Gd, RE = Eu, Tb, Dy, Cc) was synthesized by the method of solid-state reaction at high temperature. Their fluorescent spectra were measured from vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) to visible region at room temperature. Their excitation spectra all have a broadband center at about 188 nm, which is ascribed to host absorption. Using Dorenbos' and J phi rgensen's work [P. Dorenbos, J. Lumin. 91 (2000) 91, R. Resfeld, C.K. J phi rgensen. Lasers and Excite States of Rare Earth [M], Springer, Berlin, 1977, p. 45], the position of the lowest 5d levels E(Ln,A) and charge transfer band E-ct were calculated and compared with their excitation spectra.Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions doped into LnCOB show efficient luminescence under VUV and UV irradiation. In this system, Ce3+ ions do not show efficient luminescence and quench the luminescence of Tb3+ ions when Tb3+ and Ce3+ ions are co-doped into LnCOB. GdCOB doped with Dy3+ shows yellowish white light under irradiation of 254 nm light for the reason that Gd ions transfer the energy from itself to Dy.

HigWy efficient DCJTB-doped device was realized by enhanced electron injection and exciton confinement. A fluorine end-capped linear phenylene/oxadiazole oligomer 2,5-bis(4-fluorobiphenyl-4'-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (1) and a trifluoromethyl end-capped oligomer 2,5-bis(4-trifluoromethylbiphenyl-4'-yl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (2) were designed and incorporated as an electron transporting/hole blocking material in the device structure ITO/NPB (60 mn)/DCJTB:Alq(3) (0.5%, 10 nm)/1 or 2 (20 nm)/Alq(3) (30 mn)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm). The devices showed highly efficient red luminescence. In particular, the device based on 1 achieved pure red luminescence at 620 run originating from DCJTB, with a narrow FWHI of 65 nm, maximal brightness of 13,300 cd/m(2) at voltage of 20.8 V and current density of ca. 355 mA/cm(2). High current and power efficiencies (> 3.6 cd/A. 1.01m/W) were retained within a wide range of current densities. Our results show efficient and stable DCJTB-doped red electroluminescence could be anticipated for practical applications by taking advantage of the present approaches. The control experiments using BCP were also studied.

The nanostructured material (NSM) of pure silica MCM-41 molecular sieve was synthesized with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the source of silica and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMABr) as the template under supersonic wave condition. Then NSM of (CH3)(3)Si-MCM-41 was obtained by introducing trimethylsilyl to MCM-41. (CH3)(3)Si-MCM-41 showed the similar TEM and XRD photographs with the normal crystal of MCM-41 and the diameter of the NSM crystallites with a hexagon shape is of about 10-40 nm. The dispersivity of (CH3)(3)Si-MCM-41 prevails over the NSM of MCM-41 as its hydrophobicity. The fluorescent intensity of (CH3)(3)Si-MCM-41 is 3.4 times as that of the MCM-41. The luminescent functional supramolecular nanostructured material was prepared in EtOH, and characterized by TEM, HRTEM, XRD, TG, IR, and elemental analysis. The results showed that the [Eu(Phen)(4)](NO3)(3) had entered into the channels of nanosized mesoporous sieve of (CH3)(3)Si-MCM-41, forming discrete centers of luminescence. The energy transferring of the host to guest, superficial effect of NSM, quanta tunnel effect, and discrete luminescent center result in the fluorescent intensity of the supramolecule enhancement.

Luminescent thin films of heteropolytungstate complexes containing lanthanide (europium or samarium) were successfully fabricated by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. The pressure-area isotherm of the monolayer of dimethyldioctadecylammonium. bromide (DODA) is modified rather markedly when the subphase contains the complex of Na9EuW10O36 or Na9SmW10O36. The above results indicate that the monolayer of DODA has a strong interaction with the polyanions of EuW10O369-. (or SmW10O369-). X-ray photoelectron spectra and fluorescent spectra verify that europium and tungsten atoms are 36 36 incorporated into the LB films. Ultraviolet (UV), fluorescent spectra and low-angle X-ray diffraction experiments demonstrate that these LB films have a well-defined lamellar structure. The LB film containing EuW10O369- can give off strong fluorescence 16 on UV irradiation. The characteristic emission behaviors of europium ions in LB films and in the powder of Na9EuW10O369- are discussed. It is found that the intensity ratio of the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transition to the D-5(0)-->F-7(1) transition in LB film is quite different from that in the powder of Na9EuW10O36. The difference of the ratio indicates that the site symmetry of europiurn is distorted in LB film, which is probably due to the strong electrostatic interactions between DODA and polyanions.

In this paper, we report on a solid phase time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay chelate reagent-4,7-bis(chlorosulfophenyl)1, 10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid (BCPDA), which is suitable as a fluorescent labeling agent. The five step synthesis product of BCPDA was presented for improving the purity of the product based on the three step synthesis product. The approach involves chlorization, hydrolyzing the ester, preparing disodium, carboxylate to diacid, sulfonation. The yield of five step product is 99 %, 45 %, 94 %, 95 %, 80 % respectively. The structure and purity of product was characterized by the melting point, IR,H-1 NMR, UV spectrum, element analysis, and proved to be consistent with the structure predictal.

The first heteropoly acid-dipeptide complex, (HGly-Gly)(3)PMo12O40.4H(2)O, was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, H-1 NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray crystallographic study showed that the crystal structure was constructed from N-H...O and O-H...O hydrogen bonds among the (HGly-Gly)(+), H2O and PMo12O403- units. This structure represents a model interaction between polyoxometalates and proteins. The complex has photosensitivity under irradiation by sunlight. The fluorescent activity of this compound is also reported.

Two kinds of rare earth (RE) complexes were intercalated into zirconium bis(monohydrogenphosphate) (alpha -ZrP) by exchanging the RE complexes into the p-methyoxyaniline (PMA) preintercalated compound Zr(O3POH)(2). 2PMA (alpha -ZrP . 2PMA). Powder X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that Eu(DBM)(3)phen (DBM: dibenzoylmethane, phen: 1,10-phenanthroline) and Tb(AA)(3)phen (AA: acetylacetone) intercalated into alpha -ZrP . 2PMA. This was confirmed by the UV-visible spectra of both the RE complexes and the assemblies. At the same time, the assemblies have better luminescent properties, and the fluorescent lifetimes of RE3+ in the excited state in the assemblies are much longer than those in the complexes. The stabilities of the assemblies under UV radiation are much better than those of the RE complexes.

Transparent organic-inorganic hybrid monoliths containing rare-earth complexes (Eu(TTA)(3)Phen, Tb(Sal)(3)) were prepared via the sol-gel technique. It could be observed by transmission electron microscopy that the fluorescent particles are distributed in the matrix at the microscopic level. The matrix is composed of organic-inorganic semiinterpenetrating networks, i.e., PHEMA-SiO2 system. The fluorescence emission spectra of samples are similar to those from corresponding powdered Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes, and the half-widths of the strongest bands are less than 10 nm, which indicates that the monolith exhibits high fluorescence intensity and color purity. Furthermore, the fluorescence spectra exhibit no obvious change with decreasing nanoparticle size of the rare-earth complex. The fluorescence lifetimes of samples are longer than pure Eu(III), Tb(III) complexes, respectively. Samples irradiated with an UV lamp (365 nm) are still transparent but become bright red and green in color due to fluorescence of Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Eu(III)-octa-4-(tetrahydrofurfuroxy) phthalocyanine (EuPc2') was synthesied and characterized by elementary analysis, IR, MS, UV-vis spectra. EuPc2' has good film-forming ability from determination of isotherm of pi-A. The complex LB film was formed by depositing of EuPc2' on a quartz slide with the LB techniques of the Z-type, The luminescent properties of pure and doped LS films were determined. The results showed that pure films have good luminescent properties, the thicker the LB films, the stronger the fluorescent intensity. The films doped with o-phenanthroline (abbreviated as phen) made the relative intensity of fluorescent emission behavior enhance in comparison to that of pure LB film, But the amount of phen may be not too much. Our results showed that EuPc2':phen = 1: 10 (molar ratio) has the best fluorescent behavior. The electronic spectroscopic characterization of the LB films is also given.
