In this paper, aggregate migration patterns during fluid concrete castings are studied through experiments, dimensionless approach and numerical modeling. The experimental results obtained on two beams show that gravity induced migration is primarily affecting the coarsest aggregates resulting in a decrease of coarse aggregates volume fraction with the horizontal distance from the pouring point and in a puzzling vertical multi-layer structure. The origin of this multi layer structure is discussed and analyzed with the help of numerical simulations of free surface flow. Our results suggest that it finds its origin in the non Newtonian nature of fresh concrete and that increasing casting rate shall decrease the magnitude of gravity induced particle migration. Abstract - Cannabis: what are the risks ? Cannabinoids from cannabis have a dual use and display often opposite pharmacological properties depending on the circumstances of use and the administered dose. Cannabinoids constitute mainly a recreative or addictive substance, but also a therapeutic drug. They can be either neurotoxic or neuroprotector, carcinogenic or an anti-cancer drug, hyperemetic or antiemetic, pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory... Improvement in in-door cultivation techniques and selection of high yield strains have resulted in a steadily increase of THC content. Cannabis is the most frequently prohibited drug used in Switzerland and Western countries. About half of teenagers have already experimented cannabis consumption. About 10% of cannabis users smoke it daily and can be considered as cannabis-dependant. About one third of these cannabis smokers are chronically intoxicated. THC, the main psychoactive drug interacts with the endocannnabinoid system which is made of cellular receptors, endogenous ligands and a complex intra-cellular biosynthetic, degradation and intra-cellular messengers machinery. The endocannabinoid system plays a major role in the fine tuning of the nervous system. It is thought to be important in memory, motor learning, and synaptic plasticity. At psychoactive dose, THC impairs psychomotor and neurocognitive performances. Learning and memory abilities are diminished. The risk to be responsible of a traffic car accident is slightly increased after administration of cannabis alone and strongly increased after combined use of alcohol and cannabis. With the exception of young children, cannabis intake does not lead to potentially fatal intoxication. However, cannabis exposure can act as trigger for cardiovascular accidents in rare vulnerable people. Young or vulnerable people are more at risk to develop a psychosis at adulthood and/or to become cannabis-dependant. Epidemiological studies have shown that the risk to develop a schizophrenia at adulthood is increased for cannabis smokers, especially for those who are early consumers. Likewise for the risk of depression and suicide attempt. Respiratory disease can be worsen after cannabis smoking. Pregnant and breast-feeding mothers should not take cannabis because THC gets into placenta and concentrates in breast milk. The most sensitive time-period to adverse side-effects of cannabis starts from foetus and extends to adolescence. The reason could be that the endocannabinoid system, the main target of THC, plays a major role in the setup of neuronal networks in the immature brain. The concomitant use of other psychoactive drugs such as alcohol, benzodiazepines or cocaine should be avoided because of possible mutual interactions. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that a cross-sensitisation exists between most addictive drugs at the level of the brain reward system. Chronic use of cannabis leads to tolerance and withdrawals symptoms in case of cannabis intake interruption. Apart from the aforementioned unwanted side effects, cannabis displays useful and original medicinal properties which are currently under scientific evaluation. At the moment the benefit/risk ratio is not yet well assessed. Several minor phytocannabinoids or synthetic cannabinoids devoid of psychoactive properties could find their way in the modern pharmacopoeia (e.g. ajulemic acid). For therapeutic purposes, special cannabis varieties with unique cannabinoids composition (e.g. a high cannabidiol content) are preferred over those which are currently used for recreative smoking. The administration mode also differs in such a way that inhalation of carcinogenic pyrolytic compounds resulting from cannabis smoking is avoided. This can be achieved by inhaling cannabis vapors at low temperature with a vaporizer device. Résumé Les cannabinoïdes contenus dans la plante de cannabis ont un double usage et possèdent des propriétés opposées suivant les circonstances et les doses employées. Les cannabinoïdes, essentiellement drogue récréative ou d'abus pourraient, pour certains d'entre eux, devenir des médicaments. Selon les conditions d'utilisation, ils peuvent être neurotoxiques ou neuroprotecteurs, carcinogènes ou anticancéreux, hyper-émétiques ou antiémétiques, pro-inflammatoires ou anti-inflammatoires... Les techniques de culture sous serre indoor ainsi que la sélection de variétés de cannabis à fort potentiel de production ont conduit à un accroissement notable des taux de THC. Le cannabis est la drogue illégale la plus fréquemment consommée en Suisse et ailleurs dans le monde occidental. Environ la moitié des jeunes ont déjà expérimenté le cannabis. Environ 10 % des consommateurs le fument quotidiennement et en sont devenus dépendants. Un tiers de ces usagers peut être considéré comme chroniquement intoxiqué. Le THC, la principale substance psychoactive du cannabis, interagit avec le "système endocannabinoïde". Ce système est composé de récepteurs cellulaires, de ligands endogènes et d'un dispositif complexe de synthèse, de dégradation, de régulation et de messagers intra-cellulaires. Le système endocannabinoïde joue un rôle clé dans le réglage fin du système nerveux. Les endocannabinoïdes régulent la mémorisation, l'apprentissage moteur et la plasticité des liaisons nerveuses. À dose psychoactive, le THC réduit les performances psychomotrices et neurocognitives. Les facultés d'apprentissage et de mémorisation sont diminuées. Le risque d'être responsable d'un accident de circulation est augmenté après prise de cannabis, et ceci d'autant plus que de l'alcool aura été consommé parallèlement. À l'exception des jeunes enfants, la consommation de cannabis n'entraîne pas de risque potentiel d'intoxication mortelle. Toutefois, le cannabis pourrait agir comme facteur déclenchant d'accident cardiovasculaire chez de rares individus prédisposés. Les individus jeunes, et/ou vulnérables ont un risque significativement plus élevé de développer une psychose à l'âge adulte ou de devenir dépendant au cannabis. Des études épidémiologiques ont montré que le risque de développer une schizophrénie à l'âge adulte était augmenté pour les consommateurs de cannabis et ceci d'autant plus que l'âge de début de consommation était précoce. Il en va de même pour le risque de dépression. Les troubles respiratoires pourraient être exacerbés par la prise de cannabis. Les femmes enceintes et celles qui allaitent ne devraient pas consommer de cannabis car le THC traverse la barrière hémato-placentaire, en outre, il se concentre dans le lait maternel. La période de la vie la plus sensible aux effets néfastes du cannabis correspond à celle allant du foetus à l'adolescent. Le système endocannabinoïde sur lequel agit le THC serait en effet un acteur majeur orchestrant le développement des réseaux neuronaux dans le cerveau immature. La prise concomitante d'autres psychotropes comme l'alcool, les benzodiazépines ou la cocaïne conduit à des renforcements mutuels de leurs effets délétères. De plus, il a été montré l'existence d'une sensibilité croisée pour la majorité des psychotropes qui agissent sur le système de la récompense, le cannabis y compris, ce qui augmente ainsi le risque de pharmacodépendance. La prise régulière de doses élevées de cannabis entraîne l'apparition d'une tolérance et de symptômes de sevrage discrets à l'arrêt de la consommation. À part les effets négatifs mentionnés auparavant, le cannabis possède des propriétés médicales originales qui sont l'objet d'études attentives. Plusieurs cannabinoïdes mineurs naturels ou synthétiques, comme l'acide ajulémique, pourraient trouver un jour une place dans la pharmacopée. En usage thérapeutique, des variétés particulières de cannabis sont préférées, par exemple celles riches en cannabidiol non psychoactif. Le mode d'administration diffère de celui utilisé en mode récréatif. Par exemple, la vaporisation des cannabinoïdes à basse température est préférée à l'inhalation du "joint".

In order to assess the contribution of the thermogenic effect of feeding and muscular activity to total energy expenditure, nine premature infants were studied for 2 consecutive days during which time repeated measurements of energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry were performed throughout the day, combined with a visual activity score based on body movement. The infants were growing at 16.6 +/- 4.0 g/kg/day (mean +/- SD) and received 110 +/- 8 kcal/kg/day metabolizable energy (milk formula) and 522 +/- 40 mgN/kg/day. Their total energy expenditure was 68 +/- 4 kcal/kg/day indicating that 41 +/- 7 kcal/kg/day was retained for growth. Based on the combination of energy + N balances it was estimated that 80% of the weight gain was fat-free tissue and 20% was fat tissue. The rate of energy expenditure measured minute-by-minute was significantly and linearly correlated with the activity score in both the premeal (r = 0.75;p less than 0.001) and the postmeal periods (r = 0.74; p less than 0.001) with no difference in the regression slope, but with a significant difference in intercept. In preset feeding schedules the latter allowed an estimation of the thermogenic effect without the confounding effect of activity. This was found to be 3.1 +/- 1.8% when expressed as a percentage of metabolizable energy intake. However when the "classical" approach was used as a comparison (integration of extra energy expenditure induced by the meal), the thermogenic effect was found to be greater, i.e. 9.5 +/- 3.8% of the meal's metabolizable energy, due to the superimposed effect of physical activity in the postprandial state.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The aim of this paper is to analyse how economic integration in Europe has affected industrial geographical concentration in Spain and explain what the driving forces behind industry location are. Firstly, we construct regional specialisation and geographical concentration indices for Spanish 50 provinces and 30 industrial sectors in 1979, 1986 and 1992. Secondly, we carry out an econometric analysis of the determinants of geographical concentration of industries. Our main conclusion is that there is no evidence of increasing specialisation in Spain between 1979 and 1992 and that the most important determinant of Spain¿s economic geography is scale economies. Furthermore, traditional trade theory has no effects in explaining the pattern of industrial concentration

Self-reported drinking habits were examined in a random sample of 1067 persons aged 25-64 years in the Seychelles, a country in epidemiological transition where consumption of home-brewed, mostly unregistered beverages has been traditionally high. Alcohol consumption was calculated from respondents reporting at least one drink per week ('regular drinkers'). Among men, 51.1% were regular drinkers and had average intake of 112.1 ml alcohol a day. Among women, 5.9% were regular drinkers and had 49.7 ml alcohol a day. Frequency of drinking, but not amount per drinker, was slightly less in the 25-34-year than older-age categories. Home-brews (mostly palm toddy and fermented sugar cane juice) were consumed by 52% of regular drinkers and accounted for 54% of the total alcohol intake reported by all regular drinkers. Based on the reported consumption by regular drinkers only, the average annual alcohol consumption amounted respectively to 20.7 litres and 1.2 litres per man and woman aged 25-64 years, or, using extrapolation, 13.2 litres and 0.8 litres per man and woman respectively of the total population. These values may underestimate the true figures by half, since reported beer consumption accounted for 53% of beer sales. Socio-economic status was associated strongly and inversely with home-brew consumption, but slightly and positively with consumption of commercially marketed beverages. Alcohol intake was associated with smoking, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, carbohydrate-deficient transferrin and blood pressure, but not with age and body mass index. In conclusion, these data show high alcohol consumption in the Seychelles with an important gender difference, a large proportion of alcohol derived from home-brews, and opposite tendencies for the relationships between socio-economic status and home-made or commercially marketed beverages.

Detailed knowledge of the anatomy and connectivity pattern of cortico-basal ganglia circuits is essential to an understanding of abnormal cortical function and pathophysiology associated with a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. We aim to study the spatial extent and topography of human basal ganglia connectivity in vivo. Additionally, we explore at an anatomical level the hypothesis of coexistent segregated and integrative cortico-basal ganglia loops. We use probabilistic tractography on magnetic resonance diffusion weighted imaging data to segment basal ganglia and thalamus in 30 healthy subjects based on their cortical and subcortical projections. We introduce a novel method to define voxel-based connectivity profiles that allow representation of projections from a source to more than one target region. Using this method, we localize specific relay nuclei within predefined functional circuits. We find strong correlation between tractography-based basal ganglia parcellation and anatomical data from previously reported invasive tracing studies in nonhuman primates. Additionally, we show in vivo the anatomical basis of segregated loops and the extent of their overlap in prefrontal, premotor, and motor networks. Our findings in healthy humans support the notion that probabilistic diffusion tractography can be used to parcellate subcortical gray matter structures on the basis of their connectivity patterns. The coexistence of clearly segregated and also overlapping connections from cortical sites to basal ganglia subregions is a neuroanatomical correlate of both parallel and integrative networks within them. We believe that this method can be used to examine pathophysiological concepts in a number of basal ganglia-related disorders.

Understanding and anticipating biological invasions can focus either on traits that favour species invasiveness or on features of the receiving communities, habitats or landscapes that promote their invasibility. Here, we address invasibility at the regional scale, testing whether some habitats and landscapes are more invasible than others by fitting models that relate alien plant species richness to various environmental predictors. We use a multi-model information-theoretic approach to assess invasibility by modelling spatial and ecological patterns of alien invasion in landscape mosaics and testing competing hypotheses of environmental factors that may control invasibility. Because invasibility may be mediated by particular characteristics of invasiveness, we classified alien species according to their C-S-R plant strategies. We illustrate this approach with a set of 86 alien species in Northern Portugal. We first focus on predictors influencing species richness and expressing invasibility and then evaluate whether distinct plant strategies respond to the same or different groups of environmental predictors. We confirmed climate as a primary determinant of alien invasions and as a primary environmental gradient determining landscape invasibility. The effects of secondary gradients were detected only when the area was sub-sampled according to predictions based on the primary gradient. Then, multiple predictor types influenced patterns of alien species richness, with some types (landscape composition, topography and fire regime) prevailing over others. Alien species richness responded most strongly to extreme land management regimes, suggesting that intermediate disturbance induces biotic resistance by favouring native species richness. Land-use intensification facilitated alien invasion, whereas conservation areas hosted few invaders, highlighting the importance of ecosystem stability in preventing invasions. Plants with different strategies exhibited different responses to environmental gradients, particularly when the variations of the primary gradient were narrowed by sub-sampling. Such differential responses of plant strategies suggest using distinct control and eradication approaches for different areas and alien plant groups.

Abstract: Plants cannot run away to escape attacking herbivores, but they defend themselves by producing anti-digestive proteins and toxic compounds (for example glucosinolates). The first goal of this thesis was to study changes in gene expression after insect attack using microarrays. The responses of Arabidopsis thaliana to feeding by the specialist Pieris rapae and the generalist Spodoptera liffora is were compared. We found that the transcript profiles after feeding by the two chewing insects were remarkably similar, although the generalist induced a slightly stronger response. The second goal was to evaluate the implication of the four signals jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), ethylene (ET), and abscisic acid (ABA) in the control of insect-regulated gene expression. Using signaling mutants, we observed that JA was the predominant signal and that ABA modulated defense gene expression. In contrast, SA and ET appeared to control slightly gene expression, but only after feeding by S. litforalis. The third goal was to establish whether plant responses are really effective against insects. In accordance with the transcript profile, both insects were affected by the JA-dependent defenses, as they performed better on the JA-insensitive mutant. S. littoralis also performed better on ABA-deficient mutants, providing evidence for the role of ABA in defense against insects. When testing indole or aliphatic glucosinolate deficient mutants, we found that they were also more susceptible to insect feeding, providing some of the first genetic evidence for the defensive role of glucosinolates in planta. Finally, a glutathione-deficient mutant, pad2-1, was also more susceptible to insect feeding and we could attribute this phenotype to a lowered accumulation of the major indole glucosinolate. In this thesis, we provide a comprehensive list of insect-regulated genes, including many transcription factors that constitute interesting candidate genes for the further study of insect-induced expression changes. Understanding how the plant responses to insects are regulated will provide tools for a better management of insect pest in the field. Résumé: Les plantes ne peuvent s'échapper pour fuir les insectes qui les attaquent, mais elles se défendent en produisant des protéines anti-digestives et des composés toxiques (par exemple des glucosinolates). Le premier but de cette thèse était d'étudier les changements de l'expression génétique lors d'attaque par des insectes en utilisant des puces à ADN. Nous avons comparé la réponse d'Arabidopsis thaliana à deux espèces d'insectes avec des habitudes alimentaires différentes : le spécialiste Pieris rapae et le généraliste Spodoptera littoralis. Nous avons trouvé que les profils de transcription après l'attaque par les deux insectes sont remarquablement similaires, bien que le généraliste induise une réponse légèrement plus forte. Le deuxième but était de déterminer l'implication de quatre signaux dans le contrôle de la réponse :l'acide jasmonique (JA), l'acide salicylique (SA), l'éthylène (ET), et l'acide abscissique (ABA). En utilisant de mutants de signalisation, nous avons montré que l'acide jasmonique était le signal prédominant et que l'acide abscissique modulait l'expression génétique. D'autre part, l'acide salicylique et l'éthylène contrôlent à un degré moindre l'expression génétique, mais seulement après l'attaque par S. littoralís. Le troisième but était d'établir si les réponses des plantes sont efficaces contre les insectes. En accord avec le profil de transcription, les deux espèces d'insectes se sont mieux développées sur un mutant insensible au JA, indiquant que les défenses contrôlées par ce signal sont cruciales pour la plante. De plus, les larves de S. littorales se sont mieux développées sur des mutants déficients en ABA, ce qui fournit une preuve du rôle de l'acide abscissique dans la défense contre les insectes. En testant des mutants déficients en glucosinolates de type indole ou aliphatique, nous avons trouvé qu'ils étaient plus sensibles aux insectes, démontrant ainsi le rôle défensif des glucosinolates in planta. Finalement, le mutant déficient en glutathion pad2-1 était aussi plus sensible à l'attaque des insectes, et nous avons pu attribuer ce phénotype à une plus faible augmentation d'un indole glucosinolate dans ce mutant. Dans cette thèse, nous avons mis en évidence un nombre important de gènes contrôlés par les insectes, comprenant de nombreux facteurs de transcription qui constituent des candidats intéressants pour`étudier plus en détail les changements d'expression génétique induits par les insectes. Une meilleure compréhension de la réponse des plantes contre l'attaque des insectes devrait nous permettre de développer de nouvelles stratégies pour mieux gérer les ravageurs des cultures.

Preterm or sick neonates are frequently hampered in establishing a safe and efficient oral feeding. This can delay hospital discharge and impact on parent-child bonding, growth or neurodevelopment. Recent researches identified a pattern of interventions that could allow to reduce these troubles and to shorten hospital stays.

Coastal lagoons where salinity varies within a wide range during the year are colonized by euryhaline macrophytes which can develop extensive beds. Seasonal changes in biomass of Ruppia cirrhosa and Potamogeton pectinatus were studied in Tancada Lagoon (Ebro Delta, NE Spain) in order to reveal the environmental factors controlling their population development. Ruppia cirrhosa occupy a larger area of the lagoon than Potarnogeton pectinatus. Their maximum above ground biomasses are also different (495 g m-2 and 351 g m-2 ash free dry weight, respectively). Below ground biomass of Ruppia cirrhosa is between 9 and 53 % of the above ground biomass, while it is 3-40 % for Potamogeton pectinatus. Chlorophyll a contents show fluctuations similar to biomass. Low salinity and high turbidity caused by freshwater inflows favour Potamogeton expansion, while Ruppia development is favoured by high salinity and transparent water.

OBJECTIVES: Recombinant erythropoietin has a strong impact on aerobic power and is therefore one of the most potent doping agents in endurance sports. The anti-doping control of this synthetic hormone relies on the detection, in the urine, of its isoelectric pattern, which differs from that of the corresponding natural hormone, the latter being typically more acidic than the former. However, a small number of natural urinary patterns, referred to as "atypical patterns," are less acidic than the dominant form. Based on anecdotal evidence, the occurrence of such patterns seems to be related to particular strenuous exercises. This study aimed to demonstrate this relation using a strenuous exercise protocol. DESIGN: Seven athletes took part in a training protocol including a series of supramaximal short-duration exercises. Urine and blood samples were collected throughout the protocols. SETTINGS: World Cycling Center, Aigle, Switzerland, and research laboratories. PARTICIPANTS: Seven top-level athletes (cyclists) were involved in this study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Erythropoietin (EPO) isoelectric patterns were obtained by submitting blood and urine samples to isoelectric focusing. Additional protein dosages were performed. RESULTS: Supramaximal short-duration exercises induced the transformation of typical urinary natural EPO patterns into atypical ones. None of the obtained atypical patterns fulfilled the 3 criteria mandatory for reporting an adverse analytical finding. Serum EPO patterns were not affected by the exercises that caused the transformation of urinary patterns. CONCLUSION: An exercise-induced transient renal dysfunction is proposed as a hypothetic explanation for these observations that rely on parallel investigations of proteinuria in the same samples.

An example of the relationship that exist between the preferred crystaliografic orientation of quartz grains and the attitude of the mylonite foliation of quartz-feldspar mylonites is described. These rocks are the result of the inhomogeneous deformation under low-grade metamorphic conditions of a late Hercynian granodiorite, intruded into the gneisses of the slopes of the Canig massif (Eastern Pyrenees). The Costabona mylonites have a quartz c-axis fabric in pseudo-twogirdles symmetrical with respect to the mylonite foliation and perpendicular to the shearband systems which produce an extensional crenulation of the mylonite foliation.

Inhaled therapies are preferred to systemic ones during pregnancy and breast feeding. A real paradox exists however between the necessity to ensure an optimal treatment for pregnant women with asthma, in order to prevent fetal hypoxia, and the precaution linked to any drug prescription during pregnancy. Thus, the use of topical corticosteroids remains the first choice for asthma as well as rhinitis. Inhaled beta2-agonists are also recommended. Systemic corticosteroids may however be prescribed without hesitation when their use is required for asthma treatment. It is also interesting to note that oral second-generation antihistamines are currently allowed during pregnancy and breast feeding. This type of antihistamines is indeed to be preferred to first-generation ones that generate more side-effects and generally are thus not to be prescribed during breast feeding.

Aims: To describe the drinking patterns and their baseline predictive factors during a 12-month period after an initial evaluation for alcohol treatment. Methods CONTROL is a single-center, prospective, observational study evaluating consecutive alcohol-dependent patients. Using a curve clustering methodology based on a polynomial regression mixture model, we identified three clusters of patients with dominant alcohol use patterns described as mostly abstainers, mostly moderate drinkers and mostly heavy drinkers. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to identify baseline factors (socio-demographic, alcohol dependence consequences and related factors) predictive of belonging to each drinking cluster. ResultsThe sample included 143 alcohol-dependent adults (63.6% males), mean age 44.6 ± 11.8 years. The clustering method identified 47 (32.9%) mostly abstainers, 56 (39.2%) mostly moderate drinkers and 40 (28.0%) mostly heavy drinkers. Multivariate analyses indicated that mild or severe depression at baseline predicted belonging to the mostly moderate drinkers cluster during follow-up (relative risk ratio (RRR) 2.42, CI [1.02-5.73, P = 0.045] P = 0.045), while living alone (RRR 2.78, CI [1.03-7.50], P = 0.044) and reporting more alcohol-related consequences (RRR 1.03, CI [1.01-1.05], P = 0.004) predicted belonging to the mostly heavy drinkers cluster during follow-up. Conclusion In this sample, the drinking patterns of alcohol-dependent patients were predicted by baseline factors, i.e. depression, living alone or alcohol-related consequences and findings that may inform clinicians about the likely drinking patterns of their alcohol-dependent patient over the year following the initial evaluation for alcohol treatment.
