The New ISU Farm Network

Since its inception in 1946, Iowa State University’s (ISU) Western Research Farm (WRF) has fulfilled its original stated objective of “careful research giving definite answers to specific problems.” In continuing with that tradition, the WRF joined the Onfarm Research Network of the ISU Corn and Soybean Initiative (CSI) and started conducting on-farm trials with participating local producers during the 2010 growing season.

Classification criteria and commercial profile re-definition of the Family Farm Agriculture in Chile, Maule region

In Chile, small-scale farmers are classified according to old approaches from 1993 that do not include changes occurred in the last two decades. Maule is the region with most rural population in Chile which represents a significant stratum for development, innovation and competitiveness. This study explores a new approach of small-scale farmers -associated with Family Farm Agriculture (AFC) - classification in Chile and it describes a commercial profile or AFC-1 for famers of the Maule Region. A Cluster analysis to determine AFC-1 farmers is used. The analysis includes four association variables: Total Assets, Farm Income, Production Costs and Management Indicators. The results suggest that 16.4% of the farmers have a commercial profile and they could stay out support provided by the National Institute for Agricultural Development (INDAP). This group of farmers would not belong to AFC in short terms. This fact could bring restriction to AFC-1 farmers such as lack of credit access, less investment incentives and technical assistance. Thus, it would expect low process of technology adoption and welfare improvement. New agrarian policies must be warranted to support this important group of famers with a commercial profile.

Diversificación con frambuesa : : el impacto de su introducción en sistemas hortícolas de Coronda, Santa Fe, Argentina : análisis de un caso de estudio

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue analizar el impacto micro-económico que produce la introducción del cultivo de frambuesa en una pyme hortícola de Coronda, dedicada esencialmente a la producción de frutillas.El patrón de diversificación actual es escaso, debido principalmente a las limitaciones financieras existentes a nivel predial. Se combina el cultivo de frutilla con otras hortalizas, a contra-ciclo, tales como zapallito, berenjena, choclo, sandía y melón. Se analizaron los resultados económicos del ejercicio 2009/2010 de una empresa pyme, estudiada como caso, con una Superficie Agrícola Útil de 5,5 ha, que implantó en el ejercicio evaluado 2 ha de frutilla e introdujo 0,5 ha de frambuesa al esquema productivo, en reemplazo de alguno de los cultivos hortícolas que realizaba. Se obtuvo un Ingreso al capital equivalente a $ 59.786, una rentabilidad sobre el capital total de 12,95 % y sobre el capital sin tierra de 28,79 %. Estos tres indicadores mostraron un incremento de 258%, 248% y 236% respecto de la situación sin frambuesa, respectivamente. Se mejora el grado de diversificación analizado a través del Índice de Entropía y exhibe una excelente complementariedad tanto en el aspecto financiero como laboral.
