We study business organization and coordination of specialty-market hog production using a comparative analysis of two Iowa pork niche-marketing firms. We describe and analyze each firms management of five key organizational challenges: planning and logistics, quality assurance, process verication and management of credence attributes, business structure, and profit sharing. Although each firm is engaged in essentially the same activity, there are substantial differences across the two firms in the way production and marketing are coordinated. These differences are partly explained by the relative size and age of each firm, thus highlighting the importance of organizational evolution in agricultural markets, but are also partly the result of a formal organizational separation between marketing and production activities in one of the firm.

SUMMARY : The present work addresses several aspects of cell cycle regulation, cell fate specification and cell death in the central nervous system (CNS), specifically the cortex and the retina. More precisely, we investigated the role of Bmi1, a polycomb family gene required for stem cell proliferation and self-renewal, in the development of the cerebral cortex, as well as in the genesis of the retina. These data, together with studies published during the last two decades concerning cell cycle re-activation in apoptotic neurons in the CNS, raised the question of a possible link between regulation of the cell cycle during development and during retinal degeneration. 1. The effects of Bmi1 loss in the cerebral cortex : Consistently with our and others' observations on failure of Bmi9-/- stem cells to proliferate and self-renew in vitro, the Bmi9-/- cerebral cortex presented slight defects in proliferation in stem/progenitor cells compartments in vivo. This was in accordance with the pattern of Bmi1 expression in the developing forebrain. The modest proliferation defects, compared to the drastic consequences of Bmi9 loss in vitro, suggest that cell-extrinsic mechanisms may partially compensate for Bmi1 deletion in vivo during cortical histogenesis. Nevertheless, we observed a decreased proliferating activity in neurogenic regions of the adult telencephalon, more precisely in the subventricular zone, showing that Bmi1 controls neural stem/progenitor proliferation during adulthood in vivo. Our data also highlight an increased production of astrocytes at birth, and a generalized gliosis in the adult Bmi9-/- brain. Importantly, glial progenitors and astrocytes retained the ability to proliferate in the absence of Bmi1. 2. The effects of Bmi1 loss in the retina : The pattern of expression of Bmi1 during development and in the adult retina suggests a role for Bmi1 in cell fate specification and differentiation rather than in proliferation. While the layering and the global structure of the retina appear normal in Bmi1 /adult mice, immunohistochemìcal analysis revealed defects in the three major classes of retinal interneurons, namely: horizontal, bipolar and amacrine cells. Electroretinogram recordings in Bmi9-/- mice are coherent with the defects observed at the histological level, with a reduced b-wave and low-profile oscillatory potentials. These results show that Bmi1 controls not only proliferation, but also cell type generation, as previously observed in the cerebellum. 3. Cell cycle events and related neuroprotective strategies in retinal degeneration : In several neurodegenerative disorders, neurons re-express cell cycle proteins such as cyclin dependent kinases (Cdks) prior to apoptosis. Here, we show for the first time that this is also the case during retinal degeneration. Rd1 mice carry a recessive defect (Pdeóbrd/rd) that causes retinal degeneration and serves as a model of retinitis pigmentosa. We found that photoreceptors express Cdk4 and Cdk2, and undergo DNA synthesis prior to cell death. To interfere with the reactivation of Cdk-related pathways, we deleted E2fs or Brni1, which normally allow cell cycle progression. While deleting E2f1 (downstream of Cdk4/6) in Rd1 mice provides only temporary protection, knocking out Bmi1 (upstream of Cdks) leads to an extensive neuroprotective effect, independent of p16ink4a or p19arf, two tumor suppressors regulated by Bmi1. Analysis of Cdks and the DNA repair-related protein Ligase IV showed that Bmi1 acts downstream of DNA repair events and upstream of Cdks in this neurodegenerative mechanism. Expression of Cdks during an acute model of retinal degeneration, light damage-induced photoreceptor death, points to a role for Bmi1 and cell cycle proteins in retinal degeneration. Considering the similarity with the cell cycle-related apoptotic pathway observed in other neurodegenerative diseases, Bmi1 is a possible general target to prevent or delay neuronal death.

Abstract Consideration of consumers’ demand for food quality entails several aspects. Quality itself is a complex and dynamic concept, and constantly evolving technical progress may cause changes in consumers’ judgment of quality. To improve our understanding of the factors influencing the demand for quality, food quality must be defined and measured from the consumer’s perspective (Cardello, 1995). The present analysis addresses the issue of food quality, focusing on pork—the food that respondents were concerned about. To gain insight into consumers’ demand, we analyzed their perception and evaluation and focused on their cognitive structures concerning pork quality. In order to more fully account for consumers’ concerns about the origin of pork, in 2004 we conducted a consumer survey of private households. The qualitative approach of concept mapping was used to uncover the cognitive structures. Network analysis was applied to interpret the results. In order to make recommendations to enterprises, we needed to know what kind of demand emerges from the given food quality schema. By establishing the importance and relative positions of the attributes, we find that the country of origin and butcher may be the two factors that have the biggest influence on consumers’ decisions about the purchase of pork.

Mathematical methods combined with measurements of single-cell dynamics provide a means to reconstruct intracellular processes that are only partly or indirectly accessible experimentally. To obtain reliable reconstructions, the pooling of measurements from several cells of a clonal population is mandatory. However, cell-to-cell variability originating from diverse sources poses computational challenges for such process reconstruction. We introduce a scalable Bayesian inference framework that properly accounts for population heterogeneity. The method allows inference of inaccessible molecular states and kinetic parameters; computation of Bayes factors for model selection; and dissection of intrinsic, extrinsic and technical noise. We show how additional single-cell readouts such as morphological features can be included in the analysis. We use the method to reconstruct the expression dynamics of a gene under an inducible promoter in yeast from time-lapse microscopy data.

To compete over limited parental resources, young animals communicate with their parents and siblings by producing honest vocal signals of need. Components of begging calls that are sensitive to food deprivation may honestly signal need, whereas other components may be associated with individual-specific attributes that do not change with time such as identity, sex, absolute age and hierarchy. In a sib-sib communication system where barn owl (Tyto alba) nestlings vocally negotiate priority access to food resources, we show that calls have individual signatures that are used by nestlings to recognize which siblings are motivated to compete, even if most vocalization features vary with hunger level. Nestlings were more identifiable when food-deprived than food-satiated, suggesting that vocal identity is emphasized when the benefit of winning a vocal contest is higher. In broods where siblings interact iteratively, we speculate that individual-specific signature permits siblings to verify that the most vocal individual in the absence of parents is the one that indeed perceived the food brought by parents. Individual recognition may also allow nestlings to associate identity with individual-specific characteristics such as position in the within-brood dominance hierarchy. Calls indeed revealed age hierarchy and to a lower extent sex and absolute age. Using a cross-fostering experimental design, we show that most acoustic features were related to the nest of origin (but not the nest of rearing), suggesting a genetic or an early developmental effect on the ontogeny of vocal signatures. To conclude, our study suggests that sibling competition has promoted the evolution of vocal behaviours that signal not only hunger level but also intrinsic individual characteristics such as identity, family, sex and age.

Work motivation is viewed, since middle of the 20th Century, as a main factor of job satisfaction, also for increasing of productivity and quality of goods and services. By the ending of a Master’s Programme in Global Management, we was moved by a great interest to research and report about the organization human values, important component of which is the people’s satisfaction level in work conditions, obtained through an evaluation of a great number of independent variables, related to two items – work content and work context. The main objective of the present dissertation is to identify in which measure the job environmental variables contribute to work satisfaction. Inspired into the Two Factors Theory (Herzberg, 1959, 1982) and into The Cognitive Evaluation Theory (Deci, 1971), we intent to relate people satisfaction to different particular variables, which perform two subsystems – intrinsic or motivator, that includes learning, emotions, work itself, achievement and recognition and; extrinsic or hygienic, that includes salary, supervision and work physical conditions. Besides a specialized literature review, we took up two separated inquiries within capeverdian companies, the first conducted in October, 2003, and the second in October, 2007, which allowed specifics and general job satisfaction indexes, correlations and comparative analysis. We concluded that people are fair satisfied on job, and give more emphasis on work content factors, than on work context factors, but the source of satisfaction is different category by category.

This study demonstrates that endogenously produced interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) forms the basis of a tumor surveillance system that controls development of both chemically induced and spontaneously arising tumors in mice. Compared with wild-type mice, mice lacking sensitivity to either IFN-gamma (i.e., IFN-gamma receptor-deficient mice) or all IFN family members (i.e., Stat1-deficient mice) developed tumors more rapidly and with greater frequency when challenged with different doses of the chemical carcinogen methylcholanthrene. In addition, IFN-gamma-insensitive mice developed tumors more rapidly than wild-type mice when bred onto a background deficient in the p53 tumor-suppressor gene. IFN-gamma-insensitive p53(-/-) mice also developed a broader spectrum of tumors compared with mice lacking p53 alone. Using tumor cells derived from methylcholanthrene-treated IFN-gamma-insensitive mice, we found IFN-gamma's actions to be mediated at least partly through its direct effects on the tumor cell leading to enhanced tumor cell immunogenicity. The importance and generality of this system is evidenced by the finding that certain types of human tumors become selectively unresponsive to IFN-gamma. Thus, IFN-gamma forms the basis of an extrinsic tumor-suppressor mechanism in immunocompetent hosts.

ABSTRACT This thesis is composed of two main parts. The first addressed the question of whether the auditory and somatosensory systems, like their visual counterpart, comprise parallel functional pathways for processing identity and spatial attributes (so-called `what' and `where' pathways, respectively). The second part examined the independence of control processes mediating task switching across 'what' and `where' pathways in the auditory and visual modalities. Concerning the first part, electrical neuroimaging of event-related potentials identified the spatio-temporal mechanisms subserving auditory (see Appendix, Study n°1) and vibrotactile (see Appendix, Study n°2) processing during two types of blocks of trials. `What' blocks varied stimuli in their frequency independently of their location.. `Where' blocks varied the same stimuli in their location independently of their frequency. Concerning the second part (see Appendix, Study n°3), a psychophysical task-switching paradigm was used to investigate the hypothesis that the efficacy of control processes depends on the extent of overlap between the neural circuitry mediating the different tasks at hand, such that more effective task preparation (and by extension smaller switch costs) is achieved when the anatomical/functional overlap of this circuitry is small. Performance costs associated with switching tasks and/or switching sensory modalities were measured. Tasks required the analysis of either the identity or spatial location of environmental objects (`what' and `where' tasks, respectively) that were presented either visually or acoustically on any given trial. Pretrial cues informed participants of the upcoming task, but not of the sensory modality. - In the audio-visual domain, the results showed that switch costs between tasks were significantly smaller when the sensory modality of the task switched versus when it repeated. In addition, switch costs between the senses were correlated only when the sensory modality of the task repeated across trials and not when it switched. The collective evidence not only supports the independence of control processes mediating task switching and modality switching, but also the hypothesis that switch costs reflect competitive interterence between neural circuits that in turn can be diminished when these neural circuits are distinct. - In the auditory and somatosensory domains, the findings show that a segregation of location vs. recognition information is observed across sensory systems and that these happen around 100ms for both sensory modalities. - Also, our results show that functionally specialized pathways for audition and somatosensation involve largely overlapping brain regions, i.e. posterior superior and middle temporal cortices and inferior parietal areas. Both these properties (synchrony of differential processing and overlapping brain regions) probably optimize the relationships across sensory modalities. - Therefore, these results may be indicative of a computationally advantageous organization for processing spatial anal identity information.

Leadership has been a strong core subject on the organizational literature being defined and operationalized in several ways, and based on functions performed and/or on presented behaviours, gathered according to numerous concepts, and often emerging as bipolar categories presented as contradictory. Due to the environmental complexities, to the innovating skills performance, to the society’s development and the new technologies evolution, in the context of globalization sweeping today’s world, new competencies are required for the organizations to overcome the present crisis situation and consequently achieve success. There’s a need to create a leadership concept based on this new paradigm. It becomes necessary to use trustworthy and adapted tools to each country’s cultural and organizational context. This paper goal is to identify the Capeverdian existing leadership profile, recognizing the cultural attributes/values that may influence the organizational practices and the behaviour types found amongst the Capeverdian leaders.

OBJECTIVE To compare the health assistance models of Basic Traditional Units (UBS) with the Family Health Strategy (ESF) units for presence and extent of attributes of Primary Health Care (APS), specifically in the care of children. METHOD A cross-sectional study of a quantitative approach with families of children attended by the Public Health Service of Colombo, Paraná. The Primary Care Assessment Tool (PCA-Tool) was applied to parents of 482 children, 235 ESF units and 247 UBS units covering all primary care units of the municipality, between June and July 2012. The results were analyzed according to the PCA-Tool manual. RESULTS ESF units reached a borderline overall score for primary health care standards. However, they fared better in their attributes of Affiliation, Integration of care coordination, Comprehensiveness, Family Centeredness and Accessibility of use, while the attributes of Community Guidance/Orientation, Coordination of Information Systems, Longitudinality and Access attributes were rated as insufficient for APS. UBS units had low scores on all attributes. CONCLUSION The ESF units are closer to the principles of APS (Primary Health Care), but there is need to review actions of child care aimed at the attributes of APS in both care models, corroborating similar studies from other regions of Brazil.

AbstractOBJECTIVEUnderstanding the perception of women living in a rural area about the actions and services of Primary Health Care (PHC) in a municipality of southern Brazil, which is the only one regarded as predominantly rural.METHODA descriptive study of qualitative approach, carried out with women who lived in the countryside and required health services in the 15 days prior to collection.RESULTSThe results registered low fidelity to PHC attributes, focusing its functional axis on sickness, transforming the unit into small points of emergency care and a bureaucratic place where patients are referred to other types of services. The quality of service offered is compromised to offering quick, fragmented and unequal treatment in the rural context.CONCLUSIONThe findings of this study highlight the need for greater efforts in order to adequate the new care model in the development of appropriate actions as designated by PHC in the rural context studied.

The largest fresh meat brand names in Spain are analyzed here to studyhow quality is signaled in agribusiness and how the underlying quality-assurance organizations work. Results show, first, that organizationalform varies according to the specialization of the brand name.Publicly-controlled brand names are grounded on market contracting withindividual producers, providing stronger incentives. In contrast, private brands rely more on hierarchy, taking advantage of itssuperiority in solving specific coordination problems. Second, theseemingly redundant coexistence of several quality indicators for agiven product is explained in efficiency terms. Multiple brands areshown to be complementary, given their specialization in guaranteeingdifferent attributes of the product.

Theorem 1 of Euler s paper of 1737 'Variae Observationes Circa Series Infinitas', states the astonishing result that the series of all unit fractions whose denominators are perfect powers of integers minus unity has sum one. Euler attributes the Theorem to Goldbach. The proof is one of those examples of misuse of divergent series to obtain correct results so frequent during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We examine this proof closelyand, with the help of some insight provided by a modern (and completely dierent) proof of the Goldbach-Euler Theorem, we present a rational reconstruction in terms which could be considered rigorous by modern Weierstrassian standards. At the same time, with a few ideas borrowed from nonstandard analysis we see how the same reconstruction can be also be considered rigorous by modern Robinsonian standards. This last approach, though, is completely in tune with Goldbach and Euler s proof. We hope to convince the reader then how, a few simple ideas from nonstandard analysis, vindicate Euler's work.
