Nanostructured poly(ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PCL-b-P2VP)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) interpolyelectrolyte complexes (IPECs) were prepared by casting from THF/ethanol solution. The morphological behaviour of this amphiphilic block copolymer/polyelectrolyte complexes with respect to the composition was investigated in a solvent mixture. The phase behaviour, specific interactions and morphology were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy (OM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Micelle formation occurred due to the aggregation of hydrogen bonded P2VP block and polyelectrolyte (PAA) from non-interacted PCL blocks. It was observed that the hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the micelles in solution decreased with increasing PAA content up to 40 wt%. After 50 wt% PAA content, Dh again increased. The micelle formation in PCL-b-P2VP/PAA IPECs was due to the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between PAA homopolymer units and P2VP blocks of the block copolymer. The penetration of PAA homopolymers into the shell of the PCL-b-P2VP block copolymer micelles resulted in the folding of the P2VP chains, which in turn reduced the hydrodynamic size of the micelles. After the saturation of the shell with PAA homopolymers, the size of the micelles increased due to the absorption of added PAA onto the surface of the micelles.

The postdeformation recrystallization behavior of a hot-deformed austenitic stainless steel was investigated based on the first part of this study, in which the microstructure development during hot deformation and, in particular, the evolution of dynamic recrystallization (DRX), was studied. The effect of different parameters such as strain, strain rate, and temperature were examined. The dependency of the time for 50 pct softening, t 50, changed from “strain dependent” to “strain independent” at a transition strain (ε*) that was in the steady-state area of the hot deformation flow curve. The fully recrystallized microstructure showed a similar transition in strain sensitivity. However, this occurred at stains greater than ε*. A mathematical model was developed to predict the transition strain under different deformation conditions. Microstructural measurements show that the transition strain corresponds to approximately 50 pct DRX in the deformed structure at the point of unloading.

The White-browed Treecreeper Climacteris affinis is one of many woodland-dependent birds that are at risk from the encroachment of human-dominated land-uses into natural landscapes. The White-browed Treecreeper inhabits semi-arid woodlands in north-west Victoria, Australia, a vegetation community that has undergone extreme modification in the last century due to the expansion of agriculture in the region. Extant woodlands represent only 10% of the original woodland cover in the region, and are highly fragmented and disturbed in many districts. Thus, the survival of the White-browed Treecreeper may depend on active management. However, current knowledge of the ecology and biology of this species is virtually non-existent, and inadequate for informed and effective conservation actions. The aim of this thesis is to redress this situation and provide the ecological basis for sound conservation management of the species. The thesis consists of two parts: an investigation of habitat use at three spatial scales and a study of the social organization, nesting requirements, breeding behaviour and reproductive success of a population of White-browed Treecreepers. Fifty-six patches of remnant woodland in north-west Victoria were surveyed to determine the factors affecting the occurrence of the White-browed Treecreeper at the regional scale. It was detected in 16 patches, and was largely confined to two core districts - Yarrara and, Wyperfeld (Pine Plains). The floristic composition of the dominant tree species was an important determinant of patch occupancy, with the results providing quantitative support for the previously suspected affinity for Belah Casuarina pauper and Slender Cypress-pine Callitris gracilis — Buloke Allocasuarina luehmannii woodlands. However, the absence of the White-browed Treecreeper from several districts was due to factors other than a lack of appropriate habitat. Demographic isolation - the distance from the focal patch to the nearest population of the White-browed Treecreeper - was the most important variable in explaining variation in patch occupancy. Patches isolated from other treecreeper populations by more than 8.3 km in landscapes of non-preferred native vegetation, and 3 km in agricultural landscapes, were unlikely to support the White-browed Treecreeper. The impact of habitat loss and fragmentation on the capacity of individuals to move through the landscape (i.e. functional connectivity) is considered in relation to disruption to dispersal and migration, and the potential collapse of local metapopulations. Habitat use was then examined in a network of patches and linear strips of Belah woodland embedded in a predominantly cultivated landscape. A minimum area of 18.5 ha of Belah woodland was identified as the most important criterion for patch occupancy at the local scale. This landscape appeared to be permeable to movement by the White-browed Treecreeper, facilitated by the extensive network of linear habitat, and clusters of small to medium fragments. The third scale of habitat use investigated the frequency of use of 1-ha plots within tracts of occupied woodland. It is important to discriminate between habitat traits that operate at the population level, and those that act as proximate cues for habitat selection by individuals. Woodlands that have high tree density, extensive cover of low-stature shrubs, abundant lichen, a complex vertical structure, and relatively low cover of grass and herbs are likely to support larger populations of the White-browed Treecreeper. However, individuals appeared to be using tree dominance (positive) and tall shrub cover (negative) as proximate environmental stimuli for habitat selectivity. A relatively high cover of ground lichen, which probably reflects a ground layer with low disturbance and high structural complexity, was also a reliable indicator of habitat use. Predictive models were developed which could be used to plan vegetation management to enhance habitat for the White-browed Treecreeper. The results of the regional, landscape and patch-scale investigations emphasise that factors operating at multiple spatial scales influence the suitability of remnant vegetation as habitat for the White-browed Treecreeper. The White-browed Treecreeper is typical of many small Australian passerines in that it has high annual survival, small clutches, a long breeding season, multiple broods and relatively low reproductive rates. Reproductive effort is adjusted through the number of clutches laid rather than clutch size. They occupy relatively large, all-purpose territories throughout the year. However, unlike many group territorial birds, territory size was not related to the number of occupants. The White-browed Treecreeper nests in tree hollows. They select hollows with a southerly orientation where possible, and prefer hollows that were higher from the ground. At Yarrara, there was considerable spatial variation in hollow abundance that, in concert with territorial constraints, restricted the actual availability of hollows to less than the absolute abundance of hollows. Thus, the availability of suitable hollows may limit reproductive productivity in some territories, although the magnitude of this constraint on overall population growth is predicted to be small. However, lack of recruitment of hollow-bearing trees would increase the potential for hollow availability to limit population growth. This prospect is particularly relevant in grazed remnants and those outside the reserve system. Facultative cooperative breeding was confirmed, with groups formed through male philopatry. Consequently, natal dispersal is female-biased, although there was no skew in the sex ratio of the fledglings or the general adult population. Helpers were observed performing all activities associated with parenting except copulation and brooding. Cooperatively breeding groups enjoyed higher fledgling productivity than simple pairs, after statistically accounting for territory and parental quality. However, the difference reflected increased productivity in the 1999-breeding season only, when climatic conditions were more favourable than in 1998. Breeding commenced earlier in 1999, and all breeding units were more likely to attempt a second brood. However, only breeders with helpers were successful in fledging second brood young, and it was this difference that accounted for the overall discrepancy in productivity. The key mechanism for increased success in cooperative groups was a reduction hi the interval between first and second broods, facilitated by compensatory reductions in the level of care to the first brood. Thus, females with helpers probably achieved significant energetic savings during this period, which enabled them to re-lay sooner. Furthermore, they were able to recommence nesting when the fledglings from the first brood were younger because there were more adults to feed the dependent juveniles. The current utility, and possible evolutionary pathways, of cooperative breeding is examined from the perspective of both breeders and helpers. Breeders benefit through enhanced fledgling productivity in good breeding conditions and a reduction in the burden of parental care, which may impart significant energetic savings. Further, breeders may facilitate philopatry as a means for ensuring a minimum level of reproductive success. Helpers benefit through an increase in their inclusive fitness in the absence of opportunities for independent breeding (i.e. ecological constraints) and access to breeding vacancies in the natal or adjacent territories (i.e. benefits of philopatry). However, the majority of breeding unit-years comprised unassisted breeders, which suggests that pairs are selectively favoured under certain environmental or demographic conditions.

FT-IR spectroscopy has been utilized to monitor ion association in plasticized solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). The SPEs were prepared from a random copolymer of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) and the salt lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (lithium triflate, LiTf). Tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (tetraglyme) and N,N‘-dimethylformamide (DMF) were chosen as model plasticizers. Despite having a similar dielectric constant to that of the polymer host, ε ~ 5, the incorporation of tetraglyme into the SPEs resulted in increased ion association. The addition of a higher dielectric constant solvent , DMF, ε = 36.7, resulted in decreased ion association in the SPE. The effects of salt concentration (0.05−1.25 mol dm-3) and temperature (25−100 °C) upon ion association in SPEs were also investigated. At low salt concentrations, ion association was found to increase with temperature, however, at 1.25 mol dm-3 the temperature dependence of ion association was dominated by concentration effects. There appears to be a maximum in the fraction of “free” ions at a LiCF3SO3 concentration of 0.4 mol dm-3, preceded by a minimum at approximately 0.2 mol dm-3, consistent with the molar conductivity behavior previously observed in these electrolytes.

Ion association in plasticised solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) has been monitored using FT-IR spectroscopy. The SPEs were prepared from a random co-polymer of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) and the salt lithium trifluoromethane sulfonate (lithium triflate, LiTf). Tetraethylene glycol dimethylether (tetraglyme, ε˜5) and N,N'-dimethyl formamide (DMF, ε = 36.7) were chosen as model plasticisers. Decreased ion association resulted from plasticization with DMF, indicating that the addition of a higher dielectric constant solvent increases the fraction of dissociated ions in the SPE. The incorporation of tetraglyme into these SPEs results in increased ion association, despite the similar dielectric constants of the plasticiser and polymer host. The effects of salt concentration (0.05–1.25 mol dm− 3 solvent) upon ion association in SPEs was also investigated. There appears to be a minimum in the number of “free” ions at a LiTf concentration of 0.2 mol dm− 3 solvent followed by a maximum at approximately 0.4 mol dm− 3 solvent, consistent with the molar conductivity behaviour previously observed in these electrolytes.

According to dielectric spectroscopy measurements, ionic liquids (ILs) have rather modest dielectric constants that reflect contributions from distortion and electronic polarization caused by the molecular polarizability as well as the orientation polarization caused by the permanent dipole moment of the ions. To understand the relative importance of these various contributions, the electronic polarizabilities of 27 routinely used ionic liquid ions of different symmetry and size were calculated using ab initio-based methods such as HF and MP2. Using the Clausius–Mossotti equation, these polarizabilities were then used to obtain the electronic polarization contribution (εop) to the dielectric constants of six ionic liquids, [C2mim][BF4], [C2mpyr][N(CN)2], [C2mim][CF3SO3], [EtNH3][NO3], [C2mim][NTf2] and [C2mim][EtSO4]. Theoretical εop values were compared to experimental refractive indices of these ionic liquids as well as to those of traditional molecular solvents such as water, tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and formamide. The dipole moments of the ions were also calculated, and from these it is shown that the molecular reorientation component of the dielectric constants of the ionic liquids consisting of ions with small or negligible dipole moments is quite small. Thus it is concluded that a contribution from a form of “ionic polarization” must be present.

In the existing studies on fault-tolerant scheduling, the active replication schema makes use of ε + 1 replicas for each task to tolerate ε failures. However, in this paper, we show that it does not always lead to a higher reliability with more replicas. Besides, the more replicas implies more resource consumption and higher economic cost. To address this problem, with the target to satisfy the user’s reliability requirement with minimum resources, this paper proposes a new fault tolerant scheduling algorithm: MaxRe. In the algorithm, we incorporate the reliability analysis into the active replication schema and the theoretical analysis and experiments prove that the MaxRe algorithm’s schedule can certainly satisfy user’s reliability requirements. And the MaxRe scheduling algorithm can achieve the corresponding reliability with at most 70% fewer resources than the FTSA algorithm.

The deformation and fracture characteristics of a low carbon Si–Mn steel with ferrite/bainite dual–phase structure were investigated by thermo–mechanical controlled process (TMCP). The results showed that the curves of the instantaneous work–hardening factor n* value versus true strain ε are made up with three stages during uniform plastic deformation: n* value is relatively higher at stage I, decreases slowly with ε in stage II, and then decreases quickly with ε in stage III. Compared tothe equiaxed ferrite/bainite dual–phase steel, the quasi–polygonal ferrite/bainite dual–phase steel shows higher tensile strength and n*value in the low strain region. The voids or micro–cracks formed not only at ferrite–bainite interfaces but also within ferrite grains in the necked region, which can improve the property of resistance to crack propagation by reducing local stress concentration of the crack tips.

The apostlebird (Struthidea cinerea) is an Australian endemic passerine belonging to the Corcoracidae family. The species is highly gregarious throughout the year and the name of the species refers to the apparent prevalence of social groups of around 12 birds. The species is becoming a model system for the study of sociality in vertebrates, which will require the analysis of relatedness, paternity and maternity. We characterize 12 microsatellite loci tested for polymorphism on 25 individuals from a population in western New South Wales, Australia. The number of alleles ranged from 4 to 9 per locus. Expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.69 to 0.88. This microsatellite panel will facilitate future studies that will advance our understanding of dispersal processes, inbreeding avoidance and reproductive skew in social animals.

Room temperature synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments were performed on nanocrystal Ta2N in a diamond anvil cell to a pressure of 55.48 GPa. This nitride is a well-known kind of high-hardness material, and it is found to be highly incompressible. The structure is stable with no phase transitions observed in this pressure range. The zero-pressure bulk modulus and its pressure derivative at ambient pressure are B0 = 360 ± 3 GPa, B0' = 4, and in room conditions, the a and c parameters are 3.054 Å, 4.996 Å, respectively. The bulk modulus of Ta2N is greater than those of TaC, ε-TaN, Cr2N and MoN. The differences in bulk moduli might be due to the differences in structure and the cohesive energy among these phases.

Cholera and other diarrheal diseases are the second leading cause of death among the poor globally. The tragedy of this statistic is that it need not be the case. Unlike many afflictions, the impact of cholera can be greatly reduced, if not eliminated, through the provision of clean water services. This begs the question of why such provision is absent in much of the world. It is our contention that the provision of clean water services is an increasing function of both a country's level of income and income equality. We test these hypotheses by analyzing 1,032 annual observations arising from 55 relatively poor countries between the years 1980 and 2002. In the primary part of the analysis, we find that providing clean water is, as predicted, an increasing function of income and equality. Following this, and consistent with the existing epidemiological research on cholera, we find that both the numbers of cases and deaths resulting from a given cholera outbreak are strongly and negatively related to the provision of clean water.

This paper presents design and simulation of a miniature rectangular spiral planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) at UHF RFID band (902.75 - 927.25 MHz) for integration in batteryless deep brain stimulation implants. Operation in the UHF band offers small antenna size and longer transmission range. The proposed antenna has the dimensions of 10 mm × 11.5 mm × 1.6 mm, resonance frequency of 920 MHz with a bandwidth of 18 MHz at return loss of -10 dB. A dielectric substrate of FR-4 of εr = 4.5 and δ = 0.018 with thickness of 1.5644 mm is used in this design. The resonance, radiation characteristics as well as the specific absorption rate distribution induced by the designed antenna within a four layer spherical head model is evaluated by using electromagnetic modeling software which employs the finite element method.

A compact meandered three-layer stacked circular planar inverted-F antenna is designed and simulated at the UHF band (902.75 – 927.25 MHz) for passive deep brain stimulation implants. The UHF band is used because it offers small antenna size, and high data rate. The top and middle radiating layers are meandered, and low cost substrate and superstrate materials are used to limit the radius and height of the antenna to 5 mm and 1.64 mm, respectively. A dielectric substrate of FR-4 of εr= 4.7 and δ= 0.018, and a biocompatible superstrate of silicone of er= 3.7 and d= 0.003 with thickness of 0.2 mm are used in the design. The resonance frequency of the proposed antenna is 918 MHz with a bandwidth of 24 MHz at return loss of −10 dB in free space. The antenna parameter such as 3D gain pattern of the designed antenna within a skin-tissue model is evaluated by using the finite element method. The compactness, wide bandwidth, round shape, and stable characteristics in skin make this antenna suitable for DBS. The feasibility of the wireless power transmission to the implant in the human head is also examined.

Objective

Hyponatraemia is a serious adverse event commonly reported in elderly people treated with serotonergic antidepressants. The mechanism, incidence and risk factors for antidepressant induced hyponatraemia are not fully understood.

Method:
In a retrospective chart analysis, depressed patients aged >63 years were investigated for change in serum sodium levels between two time points, separated by a median period of 45.5 days, with the first specimen taken prior to treatment. Patients were grouped into three cohorts; treated with an SSRI or SNRI (n=77), treated with an antidepressant other than an SSRI or SNRI (n=54) and not treated with an antidepressant (n=128).

Results:
For change in sodium level between measurements and total number of patients with hyponatraemia, there was no significant difference between cohorts. However, the rate of reduction of serum sodium levels between time points was significantly greater for SSRI and SNRI treated patients (p<0.001) and patients treated with other antidepressants (p=0.03) compared to patients not treated with antidepressants. Moreover, the distribution of values of change in serum sodium was skewed towards reduced serum sodium in patients treated with SSRI or SNRIs (skew -0.43) and patients treated with other antidepressants (skew -0.09) but not for patients without antidepressants (skew 0.25).

Conclusions:
These data suggest that antidepressant treatment is associated with hyponatraemia affecting a subgroup of individuals only. Generalised linear modelling showed that the risk of hyponatraemia increases with increased age, female gender, and particularly the antidepressant agents sertraline and escitalopram. The findings are of clinical significance as they demonstrate that hyponatraemia can occur rapidly with antidepressants, and SSRI/SNRI medications induce more rapid changes. They support the use of electrolyte monitoring early in antidepressant treatment in patients receiving antidepressants.
