C. Presl, Pecluma robusta (Fée) M. Kessler & A.R. Sm. e Phlebodium areolatum (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) J. Sm.) e Pteridaceae por quatro gêneros e oito espécies (Adiantopsis chlorophylla (Sw.) Fée, Adiantum deflectens Mart., A. intermedium Sw., A. serratodentatum Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd., Pityrogramma calomelanos (L.) Link, P. trifoliata (L.) R.M. Tryon, Pteris quadriaurita Retz. e P. vittata L.).

(In vitro culture at low temperature and ex vitro acclimatization of Vriesea inflata an ornamental bromeliad). In vitro culture by seeds is a technique for preservation of threatened species because it may provide a large number of plants with genetic diversity. The bromeliad Vriesea inflata (Wawra) Wawra, an ornamental bromeliad, is extensively and illegally collected from the nature and must be preserved. It is possible to form plant threatened collections in vitro by reducing the temperature of culture, while occupying little space, with the consequent reduction of maintenance costs. This work evaluated the influence of temperature on in vitro growth and morphology of plants of V. inflata, with the aim of establishing a slow growth-rate and analyzing the ex vitro acclimatization. Seeds were germinated in vitro in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, with macronutrients reduced to 50% (MS/2). After three months the plants were transferred to flasks of new same medium and kept in two germination chambers with the temperature adjusted to 15 °C and to 28 °C. After 24 months the plants were subject to biometric, photosynthetic pigments content and anatomical analyses. Results showed that plants maintained at 15 °C were smaller than those at 28 °C. Nevertheless, there were no alterations in pigments content, anatomy. In both treatments there was a survival rate of 100%. This work showed that plants of this species can be kept in vitro at 15 °C with the aim of forming a slow-growth collection, thereby seeking its preservation, and can be transferred to growth at ex vitro condition to achieved 100% survival rate.

Constituiu o objetivo deste estudo a taxonomia das algas perifíticas (exceto Bacillariophyceae) dominantes em três substratos naturais, Eichhornia azurea Kunth, Nymphaea amazonum Mart. & Zucc. e Oxycaryum cubense (Poepp. Gomont, Leptolyngbya angustissima (West & G.S. West) Anagn. & Komárek, L. foveolarum (Rabenhorst ex Gomont) Anagn. & Komárek e Pseudanabaena frigida (Fritsch) Anagn. (Cyanobacteria); Characium ensiforme Hermann, C. ornithocephalum A. Braun e Desmodesmus brasiliensis (Bohlin) E. Hegewald (Chlorophyceae); Cosmarium abbreviatum Racib., C. bireme Nordst., C. pseudopyramidatum Lundell, C. subadoxum Grönblad, C. trilobulatum Reinsch, Gonatozygon pilosum Wolle and Staurastrum forficulatum Lundell (Zygnemaphyceae); Trachelomonas hispida (Perty) Stein emend. Deflandre (Euglenophyceae); Cryptomonas tenuis Pascher (Cryptophyceae) e Characiopsis sphagnicola Pascher (Xanthophyceae).

As medidas receberam tratamento estatístico.

The present work characterized and compared the anatomical structures of the leaves of Bactris gasipaes (Arecaceae) plants grown under different cultivation conditions (in vitro, ex vitro and in vivo) with the goal of identifying the origins of the difficulties encountered in acclimatizing micro-plants. The Quant program was used to determine leaf tissue thicknesses and areas, and histochemical tests were performed on leaf sections and analyzed using light microscopy. Stomatal and trichome densities were determined using the epidermal impression method and by scanning electronic microscopy. Our results indicated that there were no discernible alterations of the anatomical characteristics of the leaves of micro-plants cultivated under differing conditions and that the thickening of the mesophyll and the vascular fibers indicated adaptive responses to ex vitro conditions. As such, the observed difficulties in acclimatizing peach palm micro-plants to ex vitro conditions cannot be attributed to plant anatomical characteristics acquired during in vitro cultivation.

Leaves of Pothomorphe peltata (L.) Miq. (Piperaceae) are used locally as anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, hepatoprotective and diuretic infusions and to treat external ulcers and local infections in several parts of the Peruvian, Bolivian and Brazilian Amazon region. The antioxidant activity of different extracts of P. peltata was studied using the hydroperoxide-initiated chemiluminescence assay in liver homogenates, and the methanolic extract was found to have the highest antioxidant activity, with an IC50 = 4 µg/ml. Aqueous and dichloromethane extracts did not show antioxidant activity. The extracts were further evaluated using the thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) assay. Finally, an assay of DNA sugar damage induced by Fe (II) salt was used to determine the capacity of the extracts to suppress the oxidative degradation of DNA. All the extracts showed antioxidant activity in the latter two bioassays. The methanolic extract showed the highest activity in reducing oxidative damage to DNA, with an IC50 = 5 µg/ml. Since this extract was highly effective in reducing chemiluminescence and DNA damage, and because the latter activity could be due to the presence of compounds that bind to DNA, DNA-binding activity was studied using the DNA-methyl green (DNA-MG) bioassay. A 30% decrease in the initial absorbance of DNA-MG complex was observed in the methanolic extract at 1000 µg/ml, suggesting the presence of compounds that bind to genetic material. No DNA-binding activity was observed in the aqueous or dichloromethane extracts
