Aim: To validate the platform switching concept at oral implants with respect to the preservation of the alveolar crestal bone levels in an animal model. Material & methods: Five minipigs received three implants each with a 0.25mm implant/ abutment mismatch and were placed flush (T(0)), 1 mm below (T(1)) and 1 mm above (T(+1)) the alveolar bony crest, and as a control, one conventionally restored implant placed at the bone level. The implants were randomly inserted flapless into the mandible. Four months after implant insertion, the animals were sacrificed, and undecalcified block sections were obtained and used for histological analyses. Results: The mean values for peri- implant bone resorption were 1.09 +/- 0.59mm (Control), 0.51 (+/- 0.27 mm, T(0)), 0.50 (+/- 0.46 mm, T(1)) and 1.30 (+/- 0.21 mm, T (+1)), respectively. Statistically significant differences (P< 0.05) were found among the test (T(0), T(-1)) and the control sites. Control implants presented an average biologic width length of 3.20mm (+/- 0.33), with a connective tissue adaptation compartment of 1.29mm (+/- 0.53) and an epithelial attachment of 1.91 mm (+/- 0.71). T(0), T(1) and T(+1) implants presented with a mean biologic width of 1.97mm (+/- 1.20), 2.70 mm (+/- 1.36) and 2.84mm (+/- 0.90), respectively, with a connective tissue adaptation compartment of 1.21mm (+/- 0.97), 1.21 mm (+/- 0.65) and 1.50 mm (+/- 0.70) and an epithelial attachment of 0.84 mm (+/- 0.93), 1.66 mm (+/- 0.88) and 1.35 mm (+/- 0.44), respectively. Differences between the configurations were mainly associated with the length of the epithelial attachment. The epithelial attachment was significantly longer in the C sites than in T(0) (P = 0.014). However, no other differences between configurations were detected. Conclusion: If the implants are positioned at the level of the alveolar bony crest, the platform switching concept may have a minor impact on the length of the epithelial attachment (0.84 vs. 1.91 mm), while the connective tissue adaptation compartment remains relatively unaffected. Moreover, platform switching resulted in less resorption of the alveolar crest (0.58 mm).

The preparation and characterization of (Ph3AsOH)2[CuBr4] and [Cu(Ph3AsO)4][CuBr4] are reported (Ph3AsO = triphenylarsine oxide). Crystallographic analysis of the monoclinic crystals of (Ph3AsOH)2[CuBr4] (space group C2/c, a = 17.569 (3) Å, b = 13.090 (2) Å, c = 16.933 (2) Å, and β = 105.64 (2)°, R = 0.055 and Rw = 0.057) revealed the presence of compressed [CuBr4]2- tetrahedra of C2 symmetry with Cu-Br distances of 2.340 (1) and 2.437 (1) Å and trans-Br-Cu-Br angles of 139.2 (1) and 122.4 (1)°. The oxonium cations hydrogen bond to the bromine atoms involved in the longer Cu-Br bonds and the smaller trans-Br-Cu-Br angle. Single-crystal electronic and EPR spectra are interpreted in terms of the observed [CuBr4]2- geometry. Analysis of the electronic and EPR spectra of [Cu(Ph3AsO)4][CuBr4] led to the postulation of the presence of planar [Cu(Ph3AsO)4]2+ cations and distorted tetrahedral [CuBr4]2- anions. © 1992 American Chemical Society.

Superstring field theory was recently used to derive a four-dimensional Maxwell action with manifest duality. This action is related to the McClain-Wu-Yu Hamiltonian and can be locally coupled to electric and magnetic sources. In this letter, the manifestly dual Maxwell action is supersymmetrized using N = 1 and N = 2 superspace. The N = 2 version may be useful for studying Seiberg-Witten duality. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

We obtain constraints on possible anomalous interactions of the top quark with the electroweak vector bosons arising from the precision measurements at the Z pole. In the framework of SU(2)L ⊕ U(1)Y chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective CP-conserving operators of dimension five which induce fermionic currents involving the top quark. We constrain the magnitudes of these anomalous interactions by evaluating their one-loop contributions to the Z pole physics. Our analysis shows that the operators that contribute to the LEP observables get bounds close to the theoretical expectation for their anomalous couplings. We also show that those which break the SU(2)C custodial symmetry are more strongly bounded. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

We perform a detailed analysis of the potentiality of the CERN Large Hadron Collider to study the single production of leptoquarks via pp→e±q→ leptoquark →e± q, with e± generated by the splitting of photons radiated by the protons. Working with the most general SU(2)L⊗U( 1 )Y invariant effective Lagrangian for scalar and vector leptoquarks, we analyze in detail the leptoquark signals and backgrounds that lead to a final state containing an e± and a hard jet with approximately balanced transverse momenta. Our results indicate that the LHC will be able to discover leptoquarks with masses up to 2-3 TeV, depending on their type, for Yukawa couplings of the order of the electromagnetic one.

The author studied the mnemonic activity from epileptic patients with complex partial seizures (CPS), with the aims: 1) to identify memory disorders; and 2) to compare the patients' with the controls' results. Fifty adult patients and 20 subjects without neuropsychiatric disorders were studied. The methods consisted in: 1) investigation of the mnemonic activity through the Wechsler Memory Test (subtests: Storage and Recall, Recent Memory, and Immediate Memory); 2) comparison among the results of both groups; association from mnemonic activity with brain SPECT. In the three subtests, the patients showed cognitive performance significantly lower than the controls (p <0,05). It was found association from reduced blood flow, mainly in left temporal region, with memory impairment of the three subtetsts. The conclusion was that the CPS are associated to memory impairment.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser instrumentation of root surfaces on the morphology of fibroblasts from continuous lineage. Method and materials: Dentinal slices with 4 mm2 of surface area were obtained from teeth extracted for severe periodontal involvement. Specimens were assigned to one of three treatment groups: group 1, application of the laser with an energy level of 250 mJ at 103 pulses per second; group 2, application of the laser with an energy level of 80 mJ at 166 pulses per second; and group 3, similar to group 2, but with concomitant water irrigation of the device. The specimens were incubated in multiwell plates containing cell culture media. After 24 hours, the specimens were submitted to routine preparation for scanning electron microscopy. Three independent and blind examiners used photomicrographs to evaluate the morphology of the fibroblasts: 0 = without cells; 1 = flat cells; 2 = round cells; and 3 = combination of round and flat cells. Results: Statistical analysis indicated that there were significant differences among treatment groups and that group 3 was significantly different from groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: There was no difference between groups 1 and 2 in the morphology of fibroblasts. Laser instrumentation with concomitant irrigation impaired the adhesion of fibroblasts to dentinal surfaces.

We introduce and study new integrable models (IMs) of An (1)-nonabelian Toda type which admit U(1) ⊗ U(1) charged topological solitons. They correspond to the symmetry breaking SU(n + 1) → SU(2) ⊗ SU(2) ⊗ U(1)n-2 and are conjectured to describe charged dyonic domain walls of N = 1 SU(n + 1) SUSY gauge theory in large n limit. It is shown that this family of relativistic IMs corresponds to the first negative grade q = -1 member of a dyonic hierarchy of generalized cKP type. The explicit relation between the 1-soliton solutions (and the conserved charges as well) of the IMs of grades q = -1 and q = 2 is found. The properties of the IMs corresponding to more general symmetry breaking SU(n + 1) → SU(2)⊗p ⊗ U(1)n-p as well as IM with global SU(2) symmetries are discussed. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Most hypertensive patients need more than one drug to reach recommended blood-pressure targets. We investigated the effects on 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) of the angiotensin-receptor blocker, valsartan, in combination with hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), compared with the calcium-channel blocker amlodipine in a Brazilian population in a multicentre, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel group, controlled study in 373 patients with essential hypertension. After a 2-week washout period, patients with a mean sitting systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 160-190 mmHg were randomized to receive either valsartan 160 mg o.d., or amlodipine 5 mg o.d. for 2 weeks and subsequently force-titrated to valsartan 160 mg/HCTZ 25 mg o.d. or amlodipine 10 mg o.d. This regimen was continued until the end of the study at week 8. The primary efficacy parameter was the change from baseline to week 8 in mean 24-h SBP. Secondary endpoints were change in mean 24-h diastolic blood pressure (DBP), tolerability and safety of treatments. Valsartan/HCTZ achieved a mean reduction in systolic ABP of -19.1 ± 11.3 mmHg compared with -20.7 ± 12.0 mmHg with amlodipine (p = 0.324 for the comparison) and in diastolic ABP by -11.1 ± 7.4 mmHg vs -11.6 ± 7.2 mmHg by amlodipine (p = 0.853 for the comparison). The valsartan/HCTZ group exhibited markedly lower rates of adverse events and discontinuations than the amlodipine group. Peripheral oedemas were far more frequent with amlodipine than with valsartan/HCTZ (1.6% with valsartan/HCTZ; 16.8% with amlodipine). Thus, the valsartan 160 mg/HCTZ 25 mg combination appears to be as efficacious as amlodipine 10 mg in this patient population but better tolerated.

Supersymmetry is formulated for integrable models based on the sl(2 1) loop algebra endowed with a principal gradation. The symmetry transformations which have half-integer grades generate supersymmetry. The sl(2 1) loop algebra leads to N=2 supersymmetric mKdV and sinh-Gordon equations. The corresponding N=1 mKdV and sinh-Gordon equations are obtained via reduction induced by twisted automorphism. Our method allows for a description of a non-local symmetry structure of supersymmetric integrable models. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Witten has recently proposed a string theory in twistor space whose D-instanton contributions are conjectured to compute M = 4 super-Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes. An alternative string theory in twistor space was then proposed whose open string tree amplitudes reproduce the D-instanton computations of maximal degree in Witten's model. In this paper, a cubic open string field theory action is constructed for this alternative string in twistor space, and is shown to be invariant under parity transformations which exchange MHV and googly amplitudes. Since the string field theory action is gauge-invariant and reproduces the correct cubic super-Yang-Mills interactions, it provides strong support for the conjecture that the string theory correctly computes N-point super-Yang-Mills tree amplitudes. © SISSA/ISAS 2004.

Spinodal decomposition in a model of pure-gauge SU(2) theory that incorporates a deconfinement phase transition is investigated by means of real-time lattice simulations of the fully nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equation. Results are compared with a Glauber dynamical evolution using Monte Carlo simulations of pure-gauge lattice QCD. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.
