We present the first results of an observational programme undertaken to map the fine structure line emission of singly ionized carbon ([ CII] 157 : 7409 mum) over extended regions using a Fabry Perot spectrometer newly installed at the focal plane of a 100 cm balloon- borne far- infrared telescope. This new combination of instruments has a velocity resolution of similar to 200 km s(-1) and an angular resolution of 1.'5. During the first flight, an area of 30' x 15' in Orion A was mapped. These observations extend over a larger area than previous observations, the map is fully sampled and the spectral scanning method used enables reliable estimation of the continuum emission at frequencies adjacent to the [ CII] line. The total [ CII] line luminosity, calculated by considering up to 20% of the maximum line intensity is 0.04% of the luminosity of the far- infrared continuum. We have compared the [ CII] intensity distribution with the velocity- integrated intensity distributions of (CO)-C-13(1- 0), CI(1- 0) and CO( 3- 2) from the literature. Comparison of the [ CII], [ CI] and the radio continuum intensity distributions indicates that the largescale [ CII] emission originates mainly from the neutral gas, except at the position of M 43, where no [ CI] emission corresponding to the [ CII] emission is seen. Substantial part of the [ CII] emission from here originates from the ionized gas. The observed line intensities and ratios have been analyzed using the PDR models by Kaufman et al. ( 1999) to derive the incident UV flux and volume density at a few selected positions. The models reproduce the observations reasonably well at most positions excepting the [ CII] peak ( which coincides with the position of theta(1) Ori C). Possible reason for the failure could be the simplifying assumption of a homogeneous plane parallel slab in place of a more complicated geometry.
Probing the mobility of lithium in LISICON: Li+/H+ exchange studies in Li2ZnGeO4 and Li2+2xZn1-xGeO4
Resumo:
We investigated Li+/H+ exchange in the lithium ion conductors (LISICONS) [ Li2+2xZn1-xGeO4; x = 0.5 ( I) and x = 0.75 (II)] and their parent, gamma-Li2ZnGeO4. Facile exchange of approximately 2x lithium ions per formula unit occurs with both the LISICONS in dilute acetic acid, while the parent material does not exhibit an obvious Li+/H+ exchange under the same conditions. The results can be understood in terms of lithium ion distribution in the crystal structures: the parent Li2ZnGeO4, where all the lithium ions form part of the tetrahedral framework structure, does not exhibit a ready Li+/H+ exchange; LISICONS, where lithium ions are distributed between framework ( tetrahedral) and nonframework sites, undergo a facile Li+/H+ exchange of the nonframework site lithium ions. Accordingly, Li+/H+ exchange in dilute aqueous acetic acid provides a convenient probe to distinguish between the mobile and the immobile lithium ions in lithium ion conductors.

Charts relating the capacitance to the width, spacing, thickness and height above the ground plane of coupled microstrips have been obtained. These are used to design hairpin line and hybrid hairpin line filters as well as multiplexers using microstrip comb line filters. The experimental results agree reasonably well with the design specifications. Getsinger's original charts for parallel coupled bars between parallel plates have been formulated for the microstrip case. Corresponding charts relating the capacitances to the width, spacing, thickness and height above the ground plane of coupled microstrips have been obtained. Examples of the use of these charts are shown in the design of hairpin lines and hybrid hairpin line filters as well as multiplexers using comb line filters. The hairpin line/hybrid hairpin line filters were designed to operate at a central frequency of 9÷5 GHz with 11 per cent bandwidth and 0÷5 dB ripple. The three filters constituting the comb line filters have center frequencies of 2÷4, 3÷0 and 3÷6 GHz. The components so designed were fabricated and tested. The dielectric used for the microstrip was teflon. Experimental curves for the attenuation (insertion loss) and VSWR are given. The design specifications arc satisfied quite well.

3-(2,3-Dimethoxyphenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)prop-2-en-1-one (DMPP) a potential second harmonic generating (SHG) has been synthesized and grown as a single crystal by the slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The structure determination of the grown crystal was done by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. DMPP crystallizes with orthorhombic system with cell parameters a = 20.3106(8)angstrom, b = 4.9574(2)angstrom, c = 13.4863(5)angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees and space group Pca2(1). The crystals were characterized by FT-IR, thermal analysis, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and SHG measurements. Various functional groups present in DMPP were ascertained by FTIR analysis. DMPP is thermally stable up to 80 degrees C and optically transparent in the visible region. The crystal exhibits SHG efficiency comparable to that of KDP. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present reduced dimensionality (RD) 3D HN(CA)NH for efficient sequential assignment in proteins. The experiment correlates the N-15 and H-1 chemical shift of a residue ('i') with those of its immediate N-terminal (i - 1) and C-terminal (i + 1) neighbors and provides four-dimensional chemical shift correlations rapidly with high resolution. An assignment strategy is presented which combines the correlations observed in this experiment with amino acid type information obtained from 3D CBCA(CO)NH. By classifying the 20 amino acid types into seven distinct categories based on C-13(beta) chemical shifts, it is observed that a stretch of five sequentially connected residues is sufficient to map uniquely on to the polypeptide for sequence specific resonance assignments. This method is exemplified by application to three different systems: maltose binding protein (42 kDa), intrinsically disordered domain of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-2 and Ubiquitin. Fast data acquisition is demonstrated using longitudinal H-1 relaxation optimization. Overall, 3D HN(CA)NH is a powerful tool for high throughput resonance assignment, in particular for unfolded or intrinsically disordered polypeptides.

Benzene carboxylic acids and Benzamide act as their self-complement in molecular recognition to form inter-molecular hydrogen bonded dimers between amide and carboxylic acid groups, which have been investigated by H-1, C-13 and N-15 NMR spectroscopy. Extensive NMR studies using diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), variable temperature 1D, 2D NMR, established the formation of heterodimers of benzamide with benzoic acid, salicylic acid and phenyl acetic acid in deuterated chloroform solution. Association constants for the complex formation in the solution state have been determined. The results are ascertained by X-ray diffraction in the solid state. Intermolecular interactions in solution and in solid state were found to be similar. The structural parameters obtained by X-ray diffraction studies are compared with those obtained by DFT calculations. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the first stable isotope (delta O-18 and delta C-13) data of a similar to 400 years (1590-2006 AD) long annual to decadal-resolution speleothem record collected from the Indian Lesser Himalaya. The data show a variation from -2.7 to -5.9 parts per thousand in delta O-18 and -5.3 to -8.8 parts per thousand in delta C-13. The isotopic analyses indicate that the climate during this period can be divided into two stages: a wet phase during the Little Ice Age (LIA) (1590-1850 AD) and comparatively dry phase during the post-LIA after 1850 AD. However, the record also documents the minor dry events during the LIA and a wet episode after the LIA. Within the age uncertainty, the dry spells during the LIA are linked with the historical drought events in the Indian subcontinent and similar latitudes. The isotopic record is consistent with a number of previous studies in the areas influenced by the Westerlies but appears to be conflicting to the regions, dominated by the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM). This may be due to the possible changes in the strength of Westerlies in the study area and added by negative anomaly of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) during the LIA. In search for a new antioxidant and antimicrobial agent with improved potency, we synthesized a series of benzofuran based 1,3,5-substituted pyrazole analogues (5a-l) in five step reaction. Initially, o-alkyl derivative of salicyaldehyde readily furnish corresponding 2-acetyl benzofuran 2 in good yield, on treatment with 1,8-diaza bicyclo5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) in the presence of molecular sieves. Further, aldol condensation with vanillin, Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction with hydrazine hydrate followed by coupling of substituted anilines afforded target compounds. The structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, mass, elemental analysis and further screened for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Among the tested compounds 5d and 5f exhibited good antioxidant property with 50% inhibitory concentration higher than that of reference while compounds 5h and 5l exhibited good antimicrobial activity at concentration 1.0 and 0.5 mg/mL compared with standard, streptomycin and fluconazole respectively. In this paper, the synthesis, characterization and glutathione peroxidase and peroxynitrite scavenging activities of a series of stable spirodiazaselenuranes are described. The spiro compounds were synthesized in good yields by oxidative cyclization of diaryl selenides bearing amide moieties. All the selenides and spiro derivatives were characterized by H-1, C-13 and Se-77 NMR spectroscopy, mass spectral techniques and the structures of some of the spirodiazaselenuranes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structures reveal that the selenium atom occupies the center of a distorted trigonal bipyramid core with two nitrogen atoms occupying the apical positions and two carbon atoms and the selenium lone pair occupying the equatorial positions. Mechanistic investigations indicate that the spirocyclization occurs via the formation of selenoxide intermediates. The new compounds were evaluated for their glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimetic activity by using H2O2 as a substrate and glutathione (GSH) as a co-substrate. It was found that the substituents attached to the nitrogen atom of the selenazole ring have a significant effect on the GPx activity. While the introduction of electron withdrawing groups such as -Cl, -Br etc. to the phenyl ring decreases the activity, the introduction of electron donating groups such as -OH, -OMe significantly enhances the GPx activity of both diaryl selenides and spirodiazaselenuranes. In addition to GPx activity, the selenides and spiro derivatives were studied for their ability to inhibit peroxynitrite (PN)-mediated nitration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and oxidation of dihydrorhodamine 123. These studies indicate that the diarylselenides effectively inhibit the PN-mediated nitration and oxidation reactions by reacting with PN to produce the corresponding spirodiazaselenuranes.

Benzoyl phenyl urea, a class of insect growth regulator's acts by inhibiting chitin synthesis. Carvacrol, a naturally occurring monoterpenoid is an effective antifungal agent. We have structurally modified carvacrol (2-methyl-5-1-methylethyl] phenol) by introducing benzoylphenyl urea linkage. Two series of benzoylcarvacryl thiourea (BCTU, 4a-f) and benzoylcarvacryl urea (BCU, 5a-f) derivatives were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR and Mass spectroscopy. Derivatives 4b, 4d, 4e, 4f and 5d, 5f showed comparable insecticidal activity with the standard BPU lufenuron against Dysdercus koenigii. BCTU derivatives 4c, 4e and BCU 5c showed good antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi viz. Magnaporthe grisae, Fusarium oxysporum, Dreschlera oryzae; food spoilage yeasts viz. Debaromyces hansenii, Pichia membranifaciens; and human pathogens viz. Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Compounds 5d, 5e and 5f showed potent activity against human pathogens. Moderate and selective activity was observed for other compounds. All the synthesized compounds were non-haemolytic. These compounds have potential application in agriculture and medicine. A number of spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW) tests were performed on asphaltic road pavements by dropping a metallic 6.5 kg sphere, from a height (H) ranging from 1 to 3 m. Various combinations of source to first receiver distance (S) and receiver spacing (X) were employed. By increasing the height of the fall of the dropping mass, the maximum wavelength (lambda(max)), up to which the shear wave velocity profile can be predicted with the usage of the SASW measurements, was found to increase continuously. The height of fall of the dropping mass also seems to affect the admissible range of the wavelength for given combinations of X and S. Irrespective of different chosen combinations of S, X and H, a unique combined dispersion curve was generated in all the cases for a given pavement site as long as the threshold minimum value of the coherence function is greater than 0.90.

We report on the substrate assisted doping of ZnO nanowires grown by a vapor transport technique. The nanowires were grown non-catalytically on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and soda lime glass (SLG). Carbon from MWCNTs and sodium from SLG diffuse into ZnO during the growth and are distributed uniformly and provide doping. An advantage associated with the technique is that no conventional external dopant source is required to obtain doped ZnO nanowires. The diameter, length and hence the aspect ratio can easily be varied by changing the growth conditions. The transport studies on both carbon and sodium doped ZnO support the p-type nature of ZnO. The p-type nature of carbon doped ZnO is stable for at least eight months.
