The Companhia Energetica de Sao Paulo - CESP owns six hydroelectric dams in the state of São Paulo. The dams, both in its construction and in operation, cause some environmental impacts, most of them negatives, for example, the flooding in regions before not flooded, deviation of the river’s course, among others, bringing harm to flora and fauna of these environments. As a way to compensating these damages, the CESP has acquired a region that was influenced by Sérgio Motta Hydroelectric Plant Engineer, or Porto Primavera, and turned it into Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Foz do Rio Aguapeí. By law it fits in a Conservation Unit, and thus should be contemplate for a management plan, ie, a multidisciplinary technical document which allows, simply, the practice of actions within and around in a sustainably way. This work aimed at developing a land cover map of the reserve for this plan can be made and executed more efficiently. Initially, the project included field visits and meetings with members of the CESP to be specified classes contained on the map. Espondilomielopatia cervical caudal em cães: diagnóstico por imagem

The Caudal Cervical Spondylomyelopathy, also known as “Wobbler syndrome” is a neurological disorder that affects mainly breeds of large and giant size, especially Doberman pinsher and Great danes. Its aetiology is multifactorial and leads to a narrowing of the spinal canal by morphological and positional caudal cervical vertebrae (C5, C6 and C7), causing compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. The clinical signs presented by the affected animals are progressive ataxia of hindlimbs and, later, the forelimbs, sometimes progressing to tetraparesis. Neck pain may be present. The diagnosis is made through the association of clinical signs and diagnostic imaging such as radiography, myelography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. According to the classification of the lesion obtained by imaging examinations, the conservative or surgical treatment is established and the prognosis is variable in accordance with the degree of affection of the spinal cord

Aplicação da acupuntura em animais silvestres

This study will focus on one part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture - utilized as therapy method for pathologies treatment in humans and animals - , as well as its main techniques. Acupuncture is one branch of TCM, originated from theoretical and empirical knowledge accumulated by popular medicine. Currently, researches performed in humans and animals have shown the effectiveness of this method as an assistance or alternative in illnesses treatment. Besides that, professionals are not merely looking for orthodox medicine knowledge, but also specializations and improvement over the complementary therapies area. There are diverse studies and researches which were and are being done in veterinary, relating the effectiveness of acupuncture in small and large animals. In comparison, in the wild animals’ area the numbers of studies is smaller. However, it is expected that this number increases over the fact that some of these animals’ species are entering the pet market and also because of the possibility of using these methods for treatment and prevention of diseases on zoo animals or other animals kept in captivity

Métodos analíticos para a identificação de espécies animais

The food industry has been rapidly modernized, and with this the disposal and the consumption of industrialized food has been increasing continually. These products lose their original morphological characteristics, requiring fast and reliable tests that could help to identify the species in question, as most fraudulent behavior in the milk and dairy industry (meat and fish) is carried out where there is partial or total exchange of the original material for other with less value at market. Nowadays there is a lot of techniques that can be used for the identification of animal species, based on muscle protein, or DNA analysis. In the case of protein based analysis, we can mention several types of electrophoresis and immunologic methods, as ELISA. In the case of DNA based methods, we have several assays that use the amplification of DNA fragments, known as PCR, as proof. All these techniques have advantages and disadvantages that can be affected by factors- the sample condition, or the degree of relation between the species in question. Because of this, it’s necessary that a continuous study looking for the improvement of the available techniques, making sure that the confirmation of food authenticity is in place. This is to ensure the true product value, to comply with labeling regulationand and protect the consumer of frauds

Avaliação do método de classificação baseada no objeto em imagens de alta resolução espacial aplicado para o monitoramento de faixa de dutos: estudo de caso no entorno da refinaria de Capuava em Mauá - SP

The metropolitan region of São Paulo is the most populous of the country, this happens because of its great importance in the national economy and the job opportunities that are offered to the population. These factors result in intense population growth and urban expansion, reaching some non-habitable places of the metropolis, as areas of pipelines, which are very important for the transportation of natural gas, oil and its derivatives. Before the population growth of the region, these sites were unoccupied, do not presenting problems for the population. However, with the disorderly occupation is generated great anthropogenic pressure on the pipeline stitches, causing risks to people who are around them. Therefore it is extremely important to monitor the strip of pipelines through products and techniques of remote sensing and geoprocessing, enabling, through high spatial resolution images, identification of objects or phenomena that occur on Earth's surface that can alter the functioning and safety of pipelines. Therefore, this study aims to monitor a stretch of the area of the pipeline mesh GASPAL/OSVAT and Capuava Refinery (RECAP), located on the outskirts of the metropolitan area of São Paulo in the city of Mauá, who suffer great human pressure, proving thus the techniques of remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) as effective tools for monitoring phenomena occurred in urban areas of great complexity. The monitoring was done by object-based classification applied in orbital images Ikonos II and RapidEye, of high spatial resolution and, image processing, detection of objects, segmentation, classification and editing were developed through the eCognition and ArcGis softwares. Endocardite infecciosa em pequenos animais

Infective endocarditis is a process in which an infection attacks the heart endothelial surface, and is commonly caused by bacterial colonization, which is called bacterial endocarditis. It is a condition rarely found in dogs and cats, and is more prevalent in male dogs of large size. It mainly affects the left side of the heart, affecting the mitral and aortic valves with greater frequency. The circulation of the bacterium in the bloodstream is what gives rise endocarditis, and is caused by any non-aseptic process that serves as a gateway for bacterium in the body, as from a skin lesion, even as an invasive procedure, such as, catheterization and surgery. The ante-mortem diagnosis is difficult because the clinical signs of endocarditis are varied and common to other diseases, summing up the signs of infection (fever, lethargy, weight loss), and presence of heart murmur and may show signs of congestive heart failure. Thus, the diagnosis is most often through autopsy. To arrive at a diagnosis should be used, besides the history and physical examination, some laboratory tests, especially blood cultures and echocardiography. Treatment is accomplished through the use of antibiotics for long period of time, it is very important to follow the results of susceptibility after its outcome is revealed. The prognosis for bacterial endocarditis ranges from guarded to poor, and can be assessed mainly by the echocardiography. Desenvolvimento da técnica de MALDI Imaging utilizando tecidos animais

Currently the study of important molecular compounds present in low abundance in some tissues has been a challenge for proteomic analysis classic. An analysis requires more exploratory investigation of small regions of a tissue or a group of cells. MALDI Imaging Technology (MSI) is an application of mass spectrometry facing the chemical analysis of intact tissues. Thus, advances in mass spectrometry MALDI being obtained by the integration of histology, the best methods and automation are the main tools of data analysis. This tool has become essential to analyze the spatial distribution of peptides and proteins throughout the tissue sections, providing an enormous amount of data with minimum sample preparation. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop the technique of MALDI Imaging using tissue from glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a form of most common malignant tumor in the brain. For this we used the printer chemical ChIP-1000 (Chemical Inkjet Printer, Shimadzu) and mass spectrometer type Maldi-ToF-ToF (Axima Performance, Shimadzu), a search of the identifications were performed in databases such as SwissProt. We identified more than forty proteins with diverse functions such as proteins F-actin-capping and Thymosin to the structure and organization cellular and proteins such several Tumor necrosis factor receptor development-related pathology. The development of this technique will permit to carry-out proteomic analysis directly into the tissue, enabling earlier diagnosis of diseases, as well as the identification and characterization of potential biomarkers of disease.

The biometric characteristics have been used increasingly as a way to identify an individual, mainly for security reasons. Among them, the fingerprint is the most used biometric characteristic around the world, because it is relatively simple and very efficient. In this scene, there was a significant increase in the size of databases containing information on fingerprints, necessary to perform the recognition of a person. The task of classifying them beforehand has become extremely important as it reduces dramatically the size of the problem during a search, because it is not necessary to go through the whole database. Considering its importance, in the last thirty years, many techniques have been developed to try to increase the efficiency of the classification process. This project followed the rules-based approach and the Software Development Kit (SDK) VeriFinger 6.1 was used to assist in the detection of cores and deltas. Additionally, the classification was also implemented by means of directional map and the Poincar´e index. To make the experiments, the number four database from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was used, which is a standard in this area

Falência renal aguda em pequenos animais

The pets, mostly dogs and cats are susceptible to a variety of situations that can lead to acute kidney failure, such as infection and intoxication, besides other common causes such as dehydration or other pre-existing diseases. The abrupt decrease in renal function in these animals characterizes a severe clinical condition and requires specialized veterinary medical care since it increases the death. Early diagnosis is an important factor for the survival of these animals and so is the appropriate treatment. New technologies on diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases in veterinary medicine have made acute renal failure successfully reversed by hemodialysis in cases where conventional therapy may not be effective. In cases like that, hemodialysis treatment may be the only chance of survival for the animals, which makes this therapy more and more important and necessary, especially in referral centers of veterinary assistance

Caracterização da fauna recebida e avaliação dos procedimentos em Centros de Triagem de Animais Silvestres (CETAS)

Estima-se que anualmente, em função do tráfico de animais silvestres, cerca de 12 milhões de espécimes sejam retirados de nossas florestas, sendo que apenas uma ínfima porcentagem de indivíduos é recuperada e destinada à soltura com o devido rigor técnico. O tráfico de animais silvestres constitui um dos fatores mais relevantes da destruição da fauna, acarretando em um desequilíbrio na estruturação e manutenção dos ecossistemas. Este comércio ilegal constituise o terceiro maior do mundo, perdendo apenas para o tráfico de narcóticos e armas. Assim, para otimizar o processo de soltura da fauna como estratégia para conservação de espécies torna-se necessário uma análise quantitativa e qualitativa da fauna atendida e dos procedimentos realizados nos Centros de Triagem de Animais Silvestres (CETAS). Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo fazer uma caracterização da fauna recebida e uma avaliação dos procedimentos realizados em dois CETAS, além de discutir sobre a importância desse órgão na triagem, reabilitação e conservação de animais silvestres. O presente estudo é justificado pela escassez de informações sobre a fauna retirada da natureza. Estas são necessárias para servir de base científica para a adoção de políticas públicas para o combate ao tráfico de animais silvestres; elaborar um programa de fauna que contemple a triagem e destinação adequada e contribuir para o desenvolvimento de trabalhos educativos com o fim de esclarecimento da sociedade. Foram analisados o “Livro de Registro” do CETAS da Fundação Animália e o “Livro de Plantão” do CETAS DEPAVE – 3, bem como os “Relatórios CETAS” que esses dois Centros enviaram ao IBAMA. O período escolhido foi do ano de 2003 a 2008. Os dados foram compilados e organizados em planilhas do Microsoft Office Excel e foram elaborados tabelas e gráficos para análise dos resultados.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are being increasingly recognized in dogs and cats in veterinary medicine as they often are oncological emergencies and may help in early diagnosis of primary neoplasm, performing a more effective treatment, which usually is the removal of the tumor, and thereby improving the quality of life of the animal and perhaps prognosis. The syndrome is caused by the tumor through the production of substances such as hormones and cytokines that are released into circulation and are responsible for the appearance of distant signals from the primary neoplasm. Aspectos gerais da síndrome anorexia caquexia do câncer em pequenos animais

The cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome is the most common paraneoplastic syndrome in Veterinary Medicine. It is characterized by severe loss of muscle mass and adipose tissue resulting in severe unintentional weight loss, anemia, fatigue, negative nitrogen balance, immune dysfuntion and other metabolic disturbances. The SAC is not only a result of inadequate intake of nutrients. The tumor requires large amounts of nutrients to allow growth and causes changes in pacient metabolism to get this energy. Recent studies suggest that the metabolic changes by cancer can be measured by hormones and cytokines produced or by the patient or the tumor, but this not completely understood. Animals with SAC have lower survival time, the greater chance of complications during treatment and lower quality of life. With the increase in the number of cancer cases in domestic animals and longer lifespan after diagnosis of malignant disease through the use of antineoplastics drugs, diagnosis and treatment of cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome has shown great importance in that patients may have higher survival then better quality of life. Acervo lúdico do CPA: organização, classificação e manutenção

We know that play is directly linked to the development and growth of the child. Thinking in this context, were created recreational spaces, more known as playrooms or toy libraries. This research seeks to understand the playful objects used in more visits with children, realized CPA, FC UNESP - Bauru. Therefore, it was necessary to identify the objects necessary to the demands of users of CPA, they were psychology trainees, fellows extension projects, graduate students, teachers and the subjects treated population served. Composed over 1000 objects, the collection must be appropriate to the needs of the CPA. The research in question is characterized as a case study, is related to our shares a scholarship project Playing in the Center for Applied Psychology - CPA, held in the collection playful and Toy CPA, FC UNESP - Bauru, used, in this case, as a field for this research. Watching the playful collection, daily, some questions have arisen about this space became in this study. The data collection period was from September 2011 to September 2012. As an instrument for data collection was mounted a notebook control in order to check the movement of the objects of the collection, also applied a questionnaire to teachers and trainees working in the CPA. At the end of the study we can say that the symbolic games and rules are the objects that are related to care provided in the CPA because of its capabilities to assist in various aspects of the development of children, with the most frequently used symbolic games with children aged 2 to 7 years and the games rules with children aged 7-12 years or more
