Hydrogen isotope compositions have been measured on pore waters from sediments of Leg 129 sites in the Pigafetta and East Mariana basins (central western Pacific). Total water (pore + sorbed waters) contents and their dD have been analyzed for three samples that contain smectite but no zeolite so that sorbed water can be attributed to interlayer water. The H budget for pore and total waters implies that interlayer water is 20 per mil to 30 per mil depleted in D compared to pore water. Because the interlayer/total water molar ratio (0.25 to 0.5) in smectitic sediments is very high, interlayer water represents an important reservoir of D-depleted water in sediments. dD depth profiles for pore water at Sites 800 and 801 show breaks related to chert and radiolarite layers and are relatively vertical below. Above these chert units, pore waters are similar to modern seawater but below, they are between -10 per mil and -5.5 per mil. These values could represent little modified pre-Miocene seawater values, which were D-depleted because of the absence of polar caps, and were preserved from diffusive exchange with modern seawater by the relatively impermeable overlying chert layers. At Site 802, dD values of the pore waters show a decrease in the Miocene tuffs from 0 per mil values at the top to -8 per mil at 250 mbsf. Below, dD values are relatively uniform at about -8ë. Miocene tuffs are undergoing low water/rock alteration. A positive covariation of dD and Cl content of pore water in the tuffs suggests that the increase of dD values could result from secondary smectite formation. Low diffusive exchange coupled with D enrichment due to alteration of preglacial waters could explain the observed profile.

Data are presented on content and composition of hydrocarbons (HC) (aliphatic AHC and polyaromatic PAH) in filtered particulate matter and in the surface layer of bottom sediments from the northern shelf of the Caspian Sea and related to data on their contents in the Volga River estuary. Because of transformation and precipitation of anthropogenic and natural compounds, HC composition in particulate matter and bottom sediments undergoes transformations caused by mixing of fresh and saline waters (in bottom sediments, within concentration ranges 70.4-4557.9 µg/g for AHC and 3.8-4800 ng/g for PAH). It was found that the greatest concentrating of HC proceeds in the region of the avalanche sedimentation, and their contents are independent of grain-size types of bottom sediments. Anthropogenic HC (oil and pyrogenous) do not get over the marginal filter of the Volga River and do not pass to the open part of the sea.

Studies of sulfur behavior in the water column and in sediments in river and seawater mixing zone were conducted in three areas of the Black and Azov Seas. These investigations showed constancy of sulfate concentrations versus chlorinity. Sulfur isotope composition in sulfates of surface, bottom, and pore waters depended on sulfate contents and salinity. The dependence was complicated by partial sulfate depletion in pore water due to bacterial sulfate reduction and also by alteration of isotope composition. Surface sediments in mixing zones are characterized by intensive sulfate reduction, great variability of content and isotopic composition of reduced sulfur, and a low mean isotopic fractionation factor of sulfur.

Data of chemical analysis of Black Sea ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi indicates that their body contains on average 5.28% carbon, 3.48% nitrogen, 0.11% phosphorus, and 0.03% silicon on dry weight. Mean ratios of the main biogenic elements in ctenophores is C:N=1.4, N:P=10.9, and C:P=32.2. Comparing concentration of the main biogenic elements in the surface layer with their concentrations in ctenophores it is concluded that mass development of M. leidyi has negative effect on the hydrochemical structure of the Black Sea.

Submarine slope failures of various types and sizes are common along the tectonic and seismically active Ligurian margin, northwestern Mediterranean Sea, primarily because of seismicity up to ~M6, rapid sediment deposition in the Var fluvial system, and steepness of the continental slope (average 11°). We present geophysical, sedimentological and geotechnical results of two distinct slides in water depth >1,500 m: one located on the flank of the Upper Var Valley called Western Slide (WS), another located at the base of continental slope called Eastern Slide (ES). WS is a superficial slide characterized by a slope angle of ~4.6° and shallow scar (~30 m) whereas ES is a deep-seated slide with a lower slope angle (~3°) and deep scar (~100 m). Both areas mainly comprise clayey silt with intermediate plasticity, low water content (30-75 %) and underconsolidation to strong overconsolidation. Upslope undeformed sediments have low undrained shear strength (0-20 kPa) increasing gradually with depth, whereas an abrupt increase in strength up to 200 kPa occurs at a depth of ~3.6 m in the headwall of WS and ~1.0 m in the headwall of ES. These boundaries are interpreted as earlier failure planes that have been covered by hemipelagite or talus from upslope after landslide emplacement. Infinite slope stability analyses indicate both sites are stable under static conditions; however, slope failure may occur in undrained earthquake condition. Peak earthquake acceleration from 0.09 g on WS and 0.12 g on ES, i.e. M5-5.3 earthquakes on the spot, would be required to induce slope instability. Different failure styles include rapid sedimentation on steep canyon flanks with undercutting causing superficial slides in the west and an earthquake on the adjacent Marcel fault to trigger a deep-seated slide in the east.

Atterberg limits have been determined for 32 unconsolidated sediment samples, ranging in composition from silty clay to sandy silt and recovered from four sites drilled at the mouth of the Gulf of California during DSDP Leg 65. The liquid limit of the samples ranged from 41.5% to 157.5%, and the plastic limit from 32.8% to 65.1%. The plasticity index ranged from 5.9% to 102.0%. In some samples, the water content was less than the liquid limit. The liquidity index averaged 76% while the flow and toughness indices averaged 35% and 2.18%, respectively. On the basis of these limits, the sediments analyzed can be classified as inorganic clays of high plasticity, organic clays of moderate to high plasticity, and diatomaceous sands, silts, and silty clays of low plasticity.
