The oldest sediments cored at Site 605 are upper Maestrichtian argillaceous limestone (Hole 605, Subunit VB). The terrigeneous silt content of the uppermost Maestrichtian is quite low, averaging about 3%, whereas the carbonate content is high, usually greater than 60%; the silt contains only traces of glauconite (Site 605 chapter, this volume). Within Subunit VB a K/T boundary was defined by planktonic foraminifers. It was expected to be spread over an extended vertical interval because of the continental margin depositional setting. Examination by the shipboard party showed that the K/T boundary occurs in Section 605-66-1, between 70 and 75 cm. At the contact, the foraminiferal Globigerina pseudobulloides Zone (PIc) and the Coccolith Cruciplacolithus primus Subzone (CPla) overlie, respectively, the Abathomphalus mayaroensis and Nephrolithus frequens zones (Site 605). However, the thin K/T boundary clay, which is always present in complete sections, was not found, indicating either that the K/T boundary clay was not present or, more likely, that it was washed away during the coring operation.

During Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 93, upper Miocene through Quaternary sediments were continuously cored in Hole 604, located on the upper continental rise of the New Jersey transect (western North Atlantic). A detailed biostratigraphic study of these strata has been made using the vertical distribution of planktonic foraminifers. The Quaternary climatic zonation of Ericson and Wollin (1968) has been tentatively delineated and all the Pliocene zones and subzones (sensu Berggren, 1977) have been recognized. The rate of sedimentation was slow during most of the Pliocene but underwent a significant acceleration in the early Pleistocene. Quantitative variations in the distribution of planktonic foraminifers appear to be influenced by various factors, such as hydrodynamic winnowing resulting from the action of bottom currents and surficial thermal conditions caused by climatic changes. Both dissolution intervals and brief increases in the coarser detrital input seem, most of the time, to be correlated with indications of climatic cooling and may correspond to glacial events or cycles. This chapter delineates a precursor stage in the inception of Northern Hemisphere glaciation at 3 Ma and wide-scale Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles. Data from a detailed study of Hole 604 are briefly compared with the main sedimentary and microfaunal features of contemporaneous series previously drilled along the east American margin in the northwestern Atlantic. One of the striking observations appears to be the intense redistribution of sediments that affected this region in Neogene-Quaternary times.

Contents of organic carbon and carbonate carbon were determined on the same set of Cretaceous samples from DSDP Hole 603B in three different laboratories in order to assess the degree of comparability of organic carbon and carbonate values obtained by different labs using the same or different methods. We report the results of analyses for organic carbon using two different CHN analyzers, LECO, and Rock-Eval II and for carbonate carbon by CHN (total C minus C after acidification), the carbonate bomb technique, and CaCO3 calculated on the basis of total calcium obtained from X-ray fluorescence and induction-coupled plasma techniques. In addition, total nitrogen was obtained by two different labs using a CHN analyzer, but different bases for calculation were used. The various techniques for organic carbon analysis yielded comparable results, with the exception of those obtained by one of the CHN analyses of acid-treated samples. The calculation of organic carbon values and comparison on a whole-rock basis is very sensitive to errors in determination of carbonate contents, and this factor explains most, but not all, of the disparities between the data sets. The carbonate bomb technique gives CaCO3 values that correspond well with those calculated from total calcium concentrations (XRF and ICP analyses), whereas the CaCO3 calculated from CHN total carbon minus acid-soluble carbon consistently overestimated CaCO3. Total nitrogen and C/N results from the two different CHN analyses are not comparable and are subject to more error than the factor related to error in estimation of CaCO3.

Cretaceous sediments encountered in Hole 603B contain a 17 Å smectite as the principal clay mineral, with lesser amounts of illite, kaolinite, and randomly interstratified illite/smectite (I/S). No evidence of smectite to I/S transformation with depth is seen in the interval between 1040 and 1570 m below the sediment surface. Although the presence of some volcanic ash suggests a volcanic origin for the smectite, the nature of associated organic matter together with prevailing sedimentological models for Cretaceous sedimentation on the lower continental rise argue more strongly for a dominantly terrestrial origin for the clays.
