Conservation Agriculture is an ecosystem approach to farming capable of providing solutions for numerous of the agri-environmental concerns in Europe. Certainly, most of the challenges addressed in the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) could be tackled through Conservation Agriculture (CA). Not only the agri-environmental ones, but also those concerning farmer and rural communities’ prosperity. The optimisation of inputs and similar yields than conventional tillage, make Conservation Agriculture a profitable system compared to the tillage based agriculture. Whereas this sustainable agricultural system was conceived for protecting agrarian soils from its degradation, the numerous collateral benefits that emanate from soil conservation, i.e., climate change mitigation and adaptation, have raised Conservation Agriculture as one of the global emerging agrosciences, being adopted by an increasing number of farmers worldwide, including Europe.

Nanomaterials are nowadays widely recognised as advantageous sensing tools due to their unique properties. Some natural nanomaterials, such as DNA or hyaluronic acid analysed in this PhD thesis, have an intrinsic biocompatibility that overcomes a series of issues in the field of sensing in biological environments. Therefore, the main aim of this project was to derivatize HA chains with luminescent dyes - both organic and metal complexes - in order to obtain natural polymer-based optical sensors. A derivatization of HA with these moieties was obtained and a photophysical characterization was provided. To prove their sensing ability towards nanomaterials, the interaction with. PluS Nanoparticles, featuring an outer PEG shell, was tested. It was mostly demonstrated that the main features of the luminophores used were present in the HA nanogels as well. For example, HA@Dansyl was proven to be a luminescent probe able to sense different environment polarities. Furthermore, in HA@PA the amount of excimers/monomers emission was found to be relatable to the degree of entanglement of HA chains, that changes upon interactions with nanoparticles. Moreover, two ruthenium bipyridyl derivatives were linked to HA and it was found out that HA interacts with long DNA sequences. Also, the presence of BPA, a small molecule of environmental concern, was detected using (i) an already studied hyaluronic acid derivative with rhodamine (HA@RB) , (ii) a dizinc ruthenium complex coordinating BPA to the metal centres, and (iii) a new probe constituted by PluSNPs@DEAC and HA@RB. Despite all the systems were found to be able to detect BPA, the latter probe presented advantages in terms of sensitivity. Furthermore, the chapter 2 of this thesis is focused on the detection of a NF-κB protein in PC3 cancer cells. via confocal microscopy by following a FRET signal variation on a triplex-hairpin derivatized with a FRET couple of dyes.

Neuroinflammation represents a key hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases and is the result of a complex network of signaling cascades within microglial cells. A positive feedback loop exists between inflammation, microglia activation and protein misfolding processes, that, together with oxidative stress and excitotoxicity, lead to neuronal degeneration. Therefore, targeting this vicious cycle can be beneficial for mitigating neurodegeneration and cognitive decline in central nervous system disorders. At molecular level, GSK-3B and Fyn kinases play a crucial role in microglia activation and their deregulation has been associated to many neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, we envisioned their combined targeting as an effective approach to disrupt this toxic loop. Specifically in this project, a hit compound, based on a 7-azaindole-3-aminothiazole structure, was first identified in a virtual screening campaign, and displayed a weak dual inhibitory activity on GSK-3B and Fyn, unbalanced towards the former. Then, in a commitment to uncover the structural features required for modulating the activity on the two targets, we systematically manipulated this compound by inserting various substitution patterns in different positions. The most potent compounds obtained were advanced to deeper investigations to test their ability of tackling the inflammatory burden also in cellular systems and to unveil their binding modes within the catalytic pocket. The new class of molecules synthesized emerged as a valuable tool to deepen our understanding of the complex network governing the inflammatory events in neurodegenerative disorders.

The main focus of this work is to define a numerical methodology to simulate an aerospike engine and then to analyse the performance of DemoP1, which is a small aerospike demonstrator built by Pangea Aerospace. The aerospike is a promising solution to build more efficient engine than the actual one. Its main advantage is the expansion adaptation that allows to reach the optimal expansion in a wide range of ambient pressures delivering more thrust than an equivalent bell-shaped nozzle. The main drawbacks are the cooling system design and the spike manufacturing but nowadays, these issues seem to be overcome with the use of the additive manufacturing method. The simulations are performed with dbnsTurbFoam which is a solver of OpenFOAM. It has been designed to simulate a supersonic compressible turbulent flow. This work is divided in four chapters. The first one is a short introduction. The second one shows a brief summary of the theoretical performance of the aerospike. The third one introduces the numerical methodology to simulate a compressible supersonic flow. In the fourth chapter, the solver has been verified with an experiment found in literature. And in the fifth chapter, the simulations on DemoP1 engine are illustrated.

We document the existence of a Crime Kuznets Curve in US states since the 1970s. As income levels have risen, crime has followed an inverted U-shaped pattern, first increasing and then dropping. The Crime Kuznets Curve is not explained by income inequality. In fact, we show that during the sample period inequality has risen monotonically with income, ruling out the traditional Kuznets Curve. Our finding is robust to adding a large set of controls that are used in the literature to explain the incidence of crime, as well as to controlling for state and year fixed effects. The Curve is also revealed in nonparametric specifications. The Crime Kuznets Curve exists for property crime and for some categories of violent crime.

The Human Development Index (HDI) introduced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1990 has helped facilitate widespread debate amongst development researchers, practitioners and policy makers. The HDI is an aggregate index, calculated on an annual basis by the UNDP and published in its Human Development Reports, comprising measures of three components deemed by them to be central to development: W income (the gross domestic product per capita), (ii) education (adult literacy rate) and (iii) health (life expectancy at birth). The results of calculating the HDI are typically presented as country/regional league tables, and provide a quick means for policy makers and others to judge performance. Perhaps partly because of the relative simplicity of the index, the HDI has managed to achieve a level of acceptance and use amongst politicians and policy makers that has yet to emerge with any indicator of sustainability. Indeed, despite its existence for 11 years, including nine years after the Rio Earth Summit, the HDI has not even been modified to take on board wider issues of sustainability. This paper will critically examine the potential for 'greening' the HDI so as to include environmental and resource-consumption dimensions. In order to address the growing urgency of issues around environmental and resource limits, there is a clear need to develop policies that promote changes in behavior and the ways in which society both views and consumes goods and services. However, there is an argument to suggest that, in order to develop effective policies in this area, we need to move beyond a narrow understanding of ‘how individuals behave’ in order to cultivate a more nuanced approach that encompasses behavioral influences in different societies, contexts and settings. In this opinion article we therefore draw on a range of our own recent comparative research studies in order to provide fresh insights into the continued problem of how to engage people individually and collectively in establishing more sustainable, low-carbon societies.

We experimentally test how a private monopoly, a duopoly and a public utility allocate water of differing qualities to households and farmers. Most of our results are in line with the theoretical predictions. Overexploitation of the resources is observed independently of the market structure. Stock depletion for the public utility is the fastest, followed by the private duopoly and private monopoly. On the positive aspects of centralized public management, we find that the average quality to price ratio offered by the public monopoly is substantially higher than that offered by the private monopoly or duopoly.
