Objective. The purpose of this study was to identify the medical issues experienced by Military Working Dogs during their period of deployment in Iraq.^ Design. This study was a retrospective cross-sectional survey based on database and medical record abstraction.^ Population. Military Working Dogs (MWDs) that were deployed to Iraq at any time between 20 March 2003 and 31 December 2007 were the inclusive population of interest. Seven hundred ninety-five (795) MWDs were identified as having been deployed to Iraq during the inclusive dates. Four hundred ninety-six (496) MWDs were identified that had medical events during the deployment period. ^ Procedures. Eligible MWDs were identified through several sources, to include database query, medical record abstraction questionnaire, and medical record abstraction. Demographic information collected for each MWD included tattoo, name, age, gender, breed, Branch of Service, and duty certification. Information on each veterinary/medical clinical event (VCE) was collected. This information was coded, and data entered into a database for organization. Frequency and prevalence information were determined for each category of VCE.^ Results. The top four VCEs experienced by MWDs while deployed in Iraq were gastrohepatic, dermatologic, traumatic injury, and appendicular musculoskeletal issues.^ Conclusions. Training, equipment, and supplies for veterinary personnel who care for the deployed MWDs should be tailored accordingly to suit the identified medical needs of the MWDs. ^

Background: Despite almost 40 years of research into the etiology of Kawasaki Syndrome (KS), there is little research published on spatial and temporal clustering of KS cases. Previous analysis has found significant spatial and temporal clustering of cases, therefore cluster analyses were performed to substantiate these findings and provide insight into incident KS cases discharged from a pediatric tertiary care hospital. Identifying clusters from a single institution would allow for prospective analysis of risk factors and potential exposures for further insight into KS etiology. ^ Methods: A retrospective study was carried out to examine the epidemiology and distribution of patients presenting to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas, with a diagnosis of Acute Febrile Mucocutaneous Lymph Node Syndrome (MCLS) upon discharge from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2009. Spatial, temporal, and space-time cluster analyses were performed using the Bernoulli model with case and control event data. ^ Results: 397 of 102,761 total patients admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital had a principal or secondary diagnosis of Acute Febrile MCLS upon over the 5 year period. Demographic data for KS cases remained consistent with known disease epidemiology. Spatial, temporal, and space-time analyses of clustering using the Bernoulli model demonstrated no statistically significant clusters. ^ Discussion: Despite previous findings of spatial-temporal clustering of KS cases, there were no significant clusters of KS cases discharged from a single institution. This implicates the need for an expanded approach to conducting spatial-temporal cluster analysis and KS surveillance given the limitations of evaluating data from a single institution.^

To evaluate the adaptability and performance of new and promising apple rootstocks in the dwarfing size-control category, a NC-140 regional rootstock trial was established in 2010 at 12 sites in the United States (CO, IA, IL, IN, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, UT, WI), two sites in Canada (BC, NS), and one site in Mexico (CHIH) with Honeycrisp serving as the test cultivar. The Iowa planting, located at the ISU Horticulture Research Station, includes 31 rootstocks with new selections from the Cornell-Geneva breeding program (G, CG.), Russia (Bud), Germany (PiAu), and Japan (Supp), with M.26, M.9 Pajam 2, and M.9 T337 serving as industry standards. Tissue cultured propagated (TC) rootstocks of G.41, G.202, and G.935 were included for comparison with normal (N) stool bed propagated rootstocks. This report summarizes the tree-growth characteristics of the Iowa planting during the 2011 growing season.
