Informe de la reunión de expertos sobre retos y oportunidades para la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional en los países del sistema de integración centroamericana (Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá, 21 y 22 de julio de 2015)

De acuerdo con el Estado de la Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional (SAN) 2015 de la FAO, el FIDA y el PMA, México y Centroamérica han presentado una tendencia hacia la reducción del hambre. Esta región habría logrado disminuir el hambre de 12,6 millones a 11,4 millones de personas entre 1990 y 1992, según el estimado inicial para 2014-2016. Esto representa una caída en el porcentaje de personas afectadas por la subnutrición de 10,7% a 6,6% de la población en el mismo período de análisis. En términos del cumplimiento del Objetivo de Desarrollo del Milenio 1C, la región ha logrado un 77% de cumplimiento (entre 1990 y 2015 se ha reducido a la mitad la proporción y el total de personas subalimentadas). En los últimos dos trienios, la baja del hambre —en términos absolutos— se ha estancado, aun cuando proporcionalmente la subalimentación ha descendido.

Digestible valine requirements for broilers from 22 and 42 days old

Current experiment established different criteria to evaluate the requirements of digestible valine for broilers from 22 and 42 days of age, by different regression models (quadratic, exponential and Linear Response Plateau) and, in the case of statistical significance, the comparison of means by Duncan test at 5% probability. A total of 1,920 Cobb 500 male broilers were used and distributed in an entirely randomized experimental design, with 6 treatments (6 digestible valine levels: 0.7192, 0.7729, 0.8265, 0.8802, 0.9339 and 0.9876%) and 8 replications, with 40 broilers each. Data on performance and carcass characteristics were evaluated. The level of 0.8265% digestible valine was considered standard. The inclusion of 0.816, 0.848 and 0.903% of digestible valine levels, corresponding to digestible valine:lysine ratios of approximately 76.00%, 79.00% and 84.12%, provided best feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio, respectively for broiler from 22 to 42 days of age.

Circadian-rhythm of the endopeptidase 22.19 (ec 3.4.22.19) in the rat-brain

The endopeptidase 22.19 (EC 3.4.22.19) has been associated with the metabolism of neuropeptides by its ability to convert small enkephalin-containing peptides (8 to 13 amino acids) into enkephalins. In addition, this enzyme cleaves the Arg8-Arg9 bond of neurotensin and the Phe5-Ser6 bond of bradykinin. We analyzed the circadian variation of endopeptidase 22.19 in the whole and individual areas of the rat brain. Endopeptidase 22.19 activity was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using bradykinin as an operative substrate. Enzymatic specific activities were analyzed by rhythmometric methods and indicate a circadian fluctuation of endopeptidase 22.19 specific activity (mU of enzyme/mg of protein) in the whole brain [p < 0.001, mesor (M) = 7.62, amplitude (A) = 2.89, and acrophase (phi) = 23:08 h], striatum (p < 0.001, M = 2.92, A = 0.62, phi-23:03 h), hypothalamus (p < 0.001, M = 3.15, A = 0.86, phi-01:12 h), periaqueductal gray matter (p < 0.005, M = 2.62, A = 0.34, phi = 22:35 h), and cerebellum (p < 0.0 14, M = 4.27, A = 0.88, phi = 17:12 h). The circadian rhythmicity in endopeptidase 22.19 specific activity suggests that light may have an effect on the peptidase activity in whole brain and in areas of the central nervous system and may be essential for the mechanisms of circadian fluctuations of neuropeptides in the brain.

The Janie Rice Papers consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, letters of appreciation, and certificates of awards concerning her career as a teacher at the Winthrop Training School, her work with the Baptist Church in Chester, SC and her establishment of a Janie Carroll Rice scholarship at Winthrop.

South Carolina Home Economics Association Records - Accession 22

This collection is a valuable source on home economics history in South Carolina during the twentieth century. While there is information on the SCHEA from its beginning in 1914 to 1980, the actual records do not start until 1920. An outline of what the South Carolina Home Economics Association was doing from 1914 to 1920, is provided in the “historical file” (see Box 1, folders 1 to 4). The inclusive dates for a particular series may vary and, for most series, the records are incomplete. The collection contains all the records normally created by an organization, including constitutions, correspondence, minutes, reports, handbooks, etc. A wide variety of research topics could be developed from the records, including the SCHEA’s impact on the legislative process in South Carolina (e.g. the passage of the bill for the enrichment of cornmeal and grits in 1943), its cooperation and relationship with relief agencies in the state and its role in improving child health during the 1930s.
