The Leg 80 basalts drilled on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain 10 km southwest of Goban Spur (Hole 550B) and on the western edge of Goban Spur (Hole 551), respectively, are typical light-rare-earth-element- (LREE-) depleted oceanic tholeiites. The basalts from the two holes are almost identical; most of their primary geochemical and mineralogical characteristics have been preserved, but they have undergone some low-temperature alteration by seawater, such as enrichment in K, Rb, and Cs and development of secondary potassic minerals of the "brownstone facies." K/Ar dating fail to give realistic emplacement ages; the apparent ages obtained become younger with alteration (causing an increase in K2O). Hole 551 basalts are clearly different from the continental tholeiites emplaced on the margins of oceanizing domains during the prerift and synrift stages.

The upper part of the basaltic substratum of the Atlantic abyssal plain, approaching subduction beneath the Barbados Ridge and thus presumably beneath the Lesser Antilles island arc, is made of typical LREE-depleted oceanic tholeiites. Mineralogical (microprobe) and geochemical (X-ray fluorescence, neutron activation analyses) data are given for 12 samples from the bottom of Hole 543A, which is 3.5 km seaward of the deformation front of the Barbados Ridge complex. These basalts are overlain by a Quaternary to Maestrichtian-Campanian sedimentary sequence. Most of the basalts are relatively fresh (in spite of the alteration of olivine and development of some celadonite, clays, and chlorite in their groundmass), and their mineralogical and geochemical compositions are similar to those of LREE-depleted recent basalts from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The most altered samples occur at the top of the basaltic sequence, and show trends of enrichment in alkali metals typical of altered oceanic tholeiites.

A late Albian-early Cenomanian record (~103.3 to 99.0 Ma), including organic-rich deposits and a d13C increase associated with oceanic anoxic event 1d (OAE 1d), is described from Ocean Drilling Program sites 1050 and 1052 in the subtropical Atlantic. Foraminifera are well preserved at these sites. Paleotemperatures estimated from benthic d18O values average ~14°C for middle bathyal Site 1050 and ~17°C for upper bathyal Site 1052, whereas surface temperatures are estimated to have ranged from 26°C to 31°C at both sites. Among planktonic foraminifera, there is a steady balance of speciation and extinction with no discrete time of major faunal turnover. OAE 1d is recognized on the basis of a 1.2 per mill d13C increase (~100.0-99.6 Ma), which is similar in age and magnitude to d13C excursions documented in the North Atlantic and western Tethys. Organic-rich "black shales" are present throughout the studied interval at both sites. However, deposition of individual black shale beds was not synchronous between sites, and most of the black shale was deposited before the OAE 1d d13C increase. A similar pattern is observed at the other sites where OAE 1d has been recognized indicating that the site(s) of excess organic carbon burial that could have caused the d13C increase has (have) yet to be found. Our findings add weight to the view that OAEs should be chemostratigraphically (d13C) rather than lithostratigraphically defined.

Fray Servando Teresa de Mier posee, entre su vasta producción textual, unos documentos valiosísimos en los que se construye y reconstruye a sí mismo a partir de su discurso, en cuyo centro se erige el propio fraile al aparecer como autor y como sujeto de la enunciación en lo que bien puede considerarse discurso autobiográfico. Ahora bien, ¿de qué manera este discurso autobiográfico se manifiesta en el discurso político del Padre Mier? ¿En qué forma esta mediación del deíctico "Yo" le permite la construcción discursiva de sí mismo? El objetivo de esta ponencia es explicar, en lo posible, la construcción discursiva que fray Servando hace de sí mismo a través de la deixis en su discurso político, tomando como base la Memoria política-instructiva y el Discurso de las Profecías; pretendemos, pues, descubrir el proceso dialógico que se establece entre la propia voz del autor y su creación.

Explanations for the demise of the Classic Maya civilization on the Yucatán Peninsula during the Terminal Classic Period (TCP; CE 750-1050) are controversial. Multiyear droughts are one likely cause, but the role of the Caribbean Sea, the dominant moisture source for Mesoamerica, remains largely unknown. Here we present bimonthly resolved snapshots of reconstructed sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS) variability in the southern Caribbean from precisely dated fossil corals. Our fossil coral results from Bonaire indicate strong interannual to decadal SST and SSS variability in the southern Caribbean Sea during the TCP with multiyear extremes of high SSS and high SST that coincide with droughts on the Yucatán Peninsula. The results are best explained by changed Caribbean SST gradients affecting the Caribbean low-level atmospheric jet with consequences for Mesoamerican precipitation, possibly linked to changes in Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation strength. Our findings provide a new perspective on the anomalous hydrological changes on the Yucatán Peninsula during the TCP that complement the often-suggested southward displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. We advocate for a strong role of ocean-atmosphere interactions in the Caribbean Sea related to the multiyear variations in Caribbean Sea surface conditions as an important driver of the spatially complex pattern of hydrological anomalies during the TCP.

We report measurements of magnetic intensity, inclination, initial susceptibility, Koenigsberger's ratio, saturation magnetization, and Curie temperatures of 68 basalt samples from the Leg 83 section of Hole 504B. As in the upper part of the hole, reversely magnetized units predominate. Intensities of natural remanent magnetization vary widely, but the range of variation is an order of magnitude less than in the upper part of the hole. This and the other properties measured indicate that the magnetic characteristics of basalts from Hole 504B have been strongly affected by hydrothermal alteration, particularly in the deeper, Leg 83 section. The alteration states of the magnetic samples were studies using Xray diffraction, electron microprobe, X-ray fluorescence, and ion coupled plasma. Our results suggest three alteration zones in Hole 504B: a low-temperature zone (274.5-890 m) and two high-temperature zones (890-1050 m and 1050- 1350 m), differing in the number of veins observed in the samples and presumably differing in the volumes of hydrothermal fluids which reacted with the basalts.
