Objective: The aim of this study was to examine whether depressive symptoms predict anxiety and stress or whether anxiety and stress precede depressive symptoms in fathers during the antenatal period. Background: The findings of previous studies suggest that there is an association between paternal depression, anxiety and stress during the antenatal period. However, the temporal inter-relationship between these variables has yet to be investigated. Method: Data were collected from 150 expectant couples at approximately 18, 25 and 33 weeks’ gestation. Results: After accounting for the relative stability of depression, anxiety and stress over time, for men higher levels of anxiety earlier in pregnancy predicted higher levels of depression and stress in middle pregnancy, which predicted higher depression during late pregnancy. A similar relationship remained after partialling out the effects of partner’s depression, perceived social support and sleep quality. Further analyses also revealed significant differences in the manifestation of distress symptoms between men and women, but not between first-time and non-first-time fathers. Conclusion: Our findings indicated a possible inter-relationship between depression, anxiety and stress for men antenatally. Our findings also showed that men who reported elevated depression, anxiety and stress earlier in the antenatal period also reported elevated symptomology at later time points. Finally, the current findings revealed that antenatal paternal stress may play a key role in the development of depression and anxiety later in pregnancy. Therefore, it may be important to screen for early levels of antenatal stress in men, as well as depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is associated with a host of health benefits, yet many individuals do not perform sufficient physical activity to realise these benefits. One approach to rectifying this situation is through modifying the built environment to make it more conducive to physical activity, such as by building walking tracks or recreational physical activity facilities. Often, however, modifications to the built environment are not connected to efforts aimed at encouraging their use. The purpose of the Monitoring and Observing the Value of Exercise (MOVE) study is to evaluate the effectiveness of two interventions designed to encourage the ongoing use of a new, multi-purpose, community-based physical activity facility. METHODS/DESIGN: A two-year, randomised controlled trial with yearly survey points (baseline, 12 months follow-up, 24 months follow-up) will be conducted among 1,300 physically inactive adult participants aged 18-70 years. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: control, intervention 1 (attendance incentives), or intervention 2 (attendance incentives and tailored support following a model based on customer relationship management). Primary outcome measures will include facility usage, physical activity participation, mental and physical wellbeing, community connectedness, social capital, friendship, and social support. Secondary outcome measures will include stages of change for facility usage and social cognitive decision-making variables. DISCUSSION: This study will assess whether customer relationship management systems, a tool commonly used in commercial marketing settings, can encourage the ongoing use of a physical activity facility. Findings may also indicate the population segments among which the use of such systems are most effective, as well as their cost-effectiveness.  Australians enjoy a relatively high degree of life quality as judged by comparative international statistics. This chapter reviews the distribution of Quality of Life in Australia by considering both the objective and subjective wellbeing (SWB) of the Australian population. The review begins with an overview of objective circumstances, including income, social support, and life expectancy. It also considers the distribution of trust. Two extant measures of the subjective wellbeing of Australians are then reviewed, and it is revealed that SWB has demonstrated remarkably stable properties over the last 12 years. This chapter provides some insight into the properties of the measures and the theoretical construct of Subjective Wellbeing to explain fluctuations that occur for different components of SWB. Further, this chapter considers the demographic characteristics that are common to Australians with higher and lower SWB and offers a basis of research upon which future measures of population wellbeing can be founded

Background: Mentoring provides a range of benefits and one of them is social support. The number of students in transnational education has been increasing, and their transition into university is often fraught with difficulties. Universities can support transition through the use of a peer mentor programme (PMP).

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate the transitional issues that international postgraduate students (IPSs) face in their transition to an Australian University. The study also investigated the role played by a mentoring programme, and how this assists students with their transition.

Sample: The sample included 31 IPSs, who had come from Asian European, Middle Eastern, African and South American countries, 15 being male, and 16 being female, with an average age of 24; most had been studying at the Australian University for more than 12 months.

Design and methods: The study utilised a qualitative research method to examine the experiences of IPSs undergoing transition from their home universities to an Australian university. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with students, who were asked about their transition experiences and the assistance of the mentor programme. Thematic analysis was then conducted to determine themes from the research.

Results: IPSs reported mixed experiences with their transition. Those with difficulties referred to loneliness, different studying practices, finding accommodation and making friends. IPSs reported that the PMP helped, as mentors provided the necessary social support, friendship, information and confidence to overcome those difficulties. Those students who did not have problems with their transition had reported that they had friends or family that assisted them with their transition. As a result, these students did not need the support of mentors to the same degree as those students having problems.

Conclusions: It is concluded that mentor programmes were important for transitioning IPSs who had difficulties. Therefore, this study identified a role for a PMP in universities where there are a high proportion of IPSs who are going through transitional problems.

Introduction
In Australia the incidence of obesity is increasing rapidly and has become a significant public health concern. In addition to the many physical consequences of obesity many studies have reported significant mental health consequences, including major depression, mood and anxiety disorders. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between severity of obesity and perceived mental health in an Australian community sample.

Methods
A cross-sectional survey design was used. A total of 118 participants, aged between 19 and 75 years with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 returned a completed questionnaire. The SF-36 Health Survey, Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were used.

Results
After adjusting for age, gender, perceived social support and physical health quality of life, obesity was not significantly associated with mental health quality of life (SF-36). The strongest factor influencing mental health was perceived physical health. Mediation analyses suggest that physical health mediates the relationship between obesity and mental health quality of life.

Discussion
Our findings support the view that physical health mediates the relationship between obesity and mental health. Public health interventions should focus on reducing the impact of obesity on physical health by encouraging participation in healthy lifestyles, which in turn, may improve mental wellbeing.

Objective: Type-D personality is a construct that describes a tendency to simultaneously experience negative emotions and inhibit self-expression for fear of negative social judgement. The link between type-D and poor health outcomes may be partly mediated by two prominent psychosocial mechanisms, poor-quality health-related behaviour and poor perceived-social support. Method: The present study replicated and extended a 2008 UK and Irish prevalence study, utilising a sample from the Australian general population. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between type-D personality and subjective levels of social support, health-related behaviours and neuroticism, as well as examining the estimated prevalence rate of type-D in the general Australian population. Nine hundred and fifty five Australian participants over the age of 18 (194 male and 761 female) completed four measures assessing levels of type-D personality, quality of health-related behaviours, perceived-social support and neuroticism. Results: As hypothesised, the estimated prevalence rate was not found to be significantly different from the rate obtained by Williams etal. (2008). In addition, type-D individuals reported significantly lower perceived-social support and poorer-quality health behaviours than non-type-D individuals. Conclusions: The results of this study provide further support for the association of type-D personality with poor health-related behaviours and poor perceived-social support, as well as demonstrating the applicability of the type-D construct to the Australian general population for the first time. General healthcare applications are discussed, as well as the potential for type-D personality research to influence public illness prevention in general.

BACKGROUND: Online, self-guided programs exist for a wide range of mental health conditions, including bipolar disorder, and discussion boards are often part of these interventions. The impact engagement with these discussion boards has on the psychosocial well-being of users is largely unknown. More specifically we need to clarify the influence of the type and level of engagement on outcomes. The primary aim of this exploratory study is to determine if there is a relationship between different types (active, passive or none) and levels (high, mid and low) of discussion board engagement and improvement in outcome measures from baseline to follow up, with a focus on self-reported social support, stigma, quality of life and levels of depression and mania. The secondary aim of this study is to identify any differences in demographic variables among discussion users.

METHODS/DESIGN: The present study is a sub-study of the MoodSwings 2.0 3-arm randomised controlled trial (discussion board only (arm 1), discussion board plus psychoeducation (arm 2), discussion board, psychoeducation plus cognitive behavioural therapy-based tools (arm 3)). Discussion engagement will be measured via online participant activity monitoring. Assessments include online self-report as well as blinded phone interviews at baseline, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months follow up.

DISCUSSION: The results of this study will help to inform future programs about whether or not discussion boards are a beneficial inclusion in online self-help interventions. It will also help to determine if motivating users to actively engage in online discussion is necessary, and if so, what level of engagement is optimal to produce the most benefit. Future programs may benefit through being able to identify those most likely to poorly engage, based on demographic variables, so motivational strategies can be targeted accordingly.

© 2015 Australian Association of Family Therapy. Increasing numbers of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults are entering into parenthood. Previous studies indicate many of these parents receive little or no support from their families of origin due to family members' negative attitudes toward homosexuality. This study looks at the extent to which LGB parents report a lower sense of connectedness to family of origin and friendship networks than heterosexual parents and whether this has an impact on psychological wellbeing in either of these groups. Data were derived from two studies of parents: Work, Love, Play, a study of Australian and New Zealand LGB parents (n=324); and the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, a population-based study of young children and parents (n=6460). Structural equation modelling was used to explore the relationships between: parent sexuality and family/friendship connectedness, family/friendship connectedness and psychological wellbeing, parent sexuality and psychological wellbeing. LGB parents reported feeling less connected to their families of origin but more connected to their friendship groups than heterosexual parents. Counter to previous studies, we found no difference in the psychological wellbeing of LGB parents compared to heterosexual parents when examining the direct effect of sexuality on psychological wellbeing. Clinical implications for counsellors and family therapists are discussed.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION and care quality relies on educator capacity; however, working conditions may compromise educators’ mental health. This study examines associations between family day care (FDC) educators’ mental health and working conditions to inform workplace mental health promotion. Three hundred and sixty-six FDC educators completed an online or written survey. In addition to this, regression analyses were used to examine relationships between educator mental health and working conditions. Although many FDC educators had low psychological distress and moderate mental wellbeing, 41.7 per cent reported psychological distress. Most educators’ ‘efforts’ and ‘rewards’ were unbalanced (effort–reward imbalance [ERI] ratio) and showed high ‘overcommitment’ to work. Effort and overcommitment were significantly related to increased odds of psychological distress, whereas social support was associated with higher mental wellbeing. The ERI ratio had the strongest associations with educator psychological distress and mental wellbeing. As many working conditions associated with educator mental health are modifiable, this study highlights opportunities for workplace mental health promotion in FDC.

OBJECTIVE: Depression has been identified as a priority disorder among children and adolescents. While numerous reviews have examined the individual and family factors that contribute to child and adolescent depressive symptoms, less is known about community-level risk and protective factors. The aim of this study was to complete a systematic review to identify community risk and protective factors for depression in school-aged children (4-18 years). METHOD: The review adopted the procedures recommended by the Cochrane Non-Randomised Studies Methods Working Group and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify both observational and intervention study designs in both peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications. RESULTS: A total of 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. Seventeen of the 18 community association studies and 2 of the 3 intervention studies reported one or more significant effects. Results indicated that community safety and community minority ethnicity and discrimination act as risk factors for depressive symptoms in school-aged children. Community disadvantage failed to achieve significance in meta-analytic results but findings suggest that the role of disadvantage may be influenced by other factors. Community connectedness was also not directly associated with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: There is evidence that a number of potentially modifiable community-level risk and protective factors influence child and adolescent depressive symptoms suggesting the importance of continuing research and intervention efforts at the community-level.

BACKGROUND: Childlessness is a growing phenomenon. Previous research examining health and well-being differentials between women with and without children has produced conflicting results. Most of this research has been conducted in the United States or parts of Europe. There has been limited research in Australia that has examined the health and well-being of women with and without children across the life course. The aim of the current study was to examine the association between motherhood status and general physical and mental health and well-being over a 10-year time period. METHODS: Using 10 waves of data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia study, longitudinal linear mixed models with time varying variables (both dependent and independent) were constructed to assess the effect of childlessness on health and well-being based on the Short Form-36 Health Survey Version 1 (n=52,381 observations). FINDINGS: Findings suggest that childless women experience poorer physical and mental health and well-being during the peak reproductive years; however, this trend is reversed for women aged 65 years or more. Although never-married, childless women experienced better health and well-being compared with mothers, this was not the case for childless women who were divorced, separated, or widowed or in a relationship. CONCLUSION: The findings support the notion that whether or not a woman has children does have consequences for her health and well-being; however, this differs across the life course.

 The impact of common mental illnesses in the workplace can be reduced by encouraging support from co-workers and promoting early professional help-seeking. The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course is an evidence-based effective program designed to encourage social support and early help-seeking in the general community. However, little is known about whether the course meets the needs of workplaces. The current study aimed to gain a better understanding of how the course is being delivered in Australian workplaces and invite feedback on how it could be tailored for this delivery setting. This study used a purpose-designed survey to explore 120 MHFA instructors’ experiences of delivering the course in workplaces. The results indicated that MHFA is most commonly deployed in the human service and education sectors to assist workers with helping clients, rather than helping co-workers. The results also suggest ways in which the MHFA course could be tailored for workplaces, as well as further support instructors require to deliver courses in workplace settings.

OBJECTIVE: To document attitudes and current practices of Australian dietitians in the management of overweight and obesity, and to examine their training needs.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional postal survey of a randomly selected sample of members of the Dietitians Association of Australia.

SUBJECTS: 400 dietitians (66% of those surveyed).

MEASURES: Questionnaire-based measures of dietitian's views of obesity, education and training in weight management, definitions and perceptions of success, professional preparedness, approaches to weight management, strategies recommended for weight management, and problems and frustrations experienced.

RESULTS: Dietitians viewed themselves as potential leaders in the field of weight management, and saw this area as an important part of their role. While they considered themselves to be the best-trained professionals in this area, many felt that their training was poor and many were pessimistic about intervention outcomes. Despite this, most dietitians held views that were current, and regularly employed many of the elements of known best practice in management. However, important areas of weakness included: providing opportunities for long-term follow-up; providing a range of management interventions; promoting self-monitoring of diet and exercise; and promoting opportunities for social support.

CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that training in and advocacy for the management and prevention of overweight and obesity are priority areas for dietitians, and that formal studies to evaluate dietitians' effectiveness in management should be undertaken.

Este estudo tem por finalidade identificar perspectiva dos profissionais de Recursos Humanos a correlação entre as competências gerenciais e a relação construída entre líderes de diferentes níveis hierárquicos e suas equipes diretas, bem como o impacto na percepção da pressão e do estresse pelas suas respectivas equipes. Um dos desafios que gerentes e outros líderes encontram é como manter um time motivado e mobilizado em um ambiente de pressão crescente, seja decorrente de uma expansão ou uma retração do seu mercado. No primeiro capítulo e no segundo capítulos fazemos a introdução e a definição do Problema, os objetivos e delimitações do estudo. No terceiro capítulo caminhamos pela história do trabalho, da organização e do homem, buscando fundamentar no tempo a jornada em busca do equilíbrio trabalho e trabalhador, o lugar do homem na construção desta história e alguns importantes pensadores da gestão de pessoas. Este capítulo abre portas para entendermos o capítulo seguinte, no qual estudamos o estresse e, em particular, o estresse ocupacional. Mostramos, ainda, a diferença entre pressão – que está no ambiente externo- e estresse, que deriva da percepção do indivíduo. O interesse neste tema é decorrente da constatação prática de que a pressão aumenta em tempos de retração do mercado, mas também aumenta em períodos em o mercado está aquecido. Logo, se houver uma correlação entre como uma equipe ou um liderado ‘percebe’ o seu líder, essa informação poderá ser útil para a Gestão de Pessoas. Aprofundamos o conceito de Suporte Social, a rede que protege o colaborador nem contextos de alta pressão e demos maior ênfase ao papel do líder como importante fonte deste suporte. No quinto capítulo analisamos o tema conflito por ser um dos temas que mais impactam o estresse ocupacional. As relações de trabalho são, por sua natureza, relações de longo prazo, o que faz do manejo adequado do conflito no ambiente de trabalho um assunto relevante na agenda do gerente. Entretanto, seu manejo adequado depende tanto do diagnóstico correto, bem como da relação de confiança construída pelo líder. Embora cientes de que parte significativa dos conflitos está relacionada às estruturas e estratégias corporativas, propositalmente dirigimos nossa atenção aos gerentes e líderes que compõem a massa de liderança dessas organizações visando provocar idéias que possam contribuir para a melhoria das relações e dos resultados. No sexto capitulo apresentamos a Metodologia e no último capítulo apresentamos e discutimos o resultado da pesquisa realizada com profissionais de Recursos Humanos de grandes empresas, buscando, através do olhar do RH, uma percepção sobre as lideranças de cada empresa e a comparação entre líderes com maior ou menor capacidade de negociação junto à sua equipe. O estudo usou uma grade flexível suportada por um questionário semi-estruturado e os dados foram tratados usando a metodologia da Análise de Conteúdo sem que fosse necessário um tratamento estatístico devido ao tamanho da amostra. O estudo apontou para a necessidade de uma exploração mais profunda do tema uma vez que a literatura e os resultados iniciais demonstraram um importante papel da chefia direta na percepção grupal do estresse e no clima organizacional. Ao concluir o trabalho a pesquisa oferece algumas ponderações sobre o papel das lideranças e o papel das corporações na equalização de equipes que vivem sob pressão constante.

É cada vez maior o número de indivíduos que lidam com responsabilidades familiares e de trabalho nas suas rotinas do dia a dia. Esse cenário tem levado a um maior número de investigações sobre as relações entre trabalho e família e os impactos das mesmas na vida dos indivíduos e nas organizações. Diversas são as abordagens e perspectivas teóricas que buscam explicar a ligação entre esses dois domínios e que exploram os efeitos que trabalho e família podem exercer um sobre o outro. O presente estudo aborda a relação trabalho-família a partir da concepção dos limites existentes nestes domínios, limites estes que influenciam diretamente no modo como a interface trabalho-família é construída. São desenvolvidas hipóteses de pesquisa que exploram o constructo força do limite (boundary strength), seus antecedentes e sua relação com o conflito trabalho-família e com o estresse ocupacional. Propõe-se ainda uma relação de moderação do suporte social na relação entre conflito trabalho-família e estresse ocupacional. Para testar a validade empírica do modelo proposto, um estudo de campo é conduzido, com 401 funcionários de diversas organizações no Brasil. Os resultados sugerem que quanto maior a força do limite na família e no trabalho, menor o conflito trabalho-família experimentado pelos indivíduos e consequentemente menor o nível de estresse ocupacional. O teste empírico deu suporte ao papel moderador do suporte social de chefes e colegas de trabalho na relação entre o conflito trabalho-família e o estresse ocupacional. Implicações teóricas e práticas dos resultados obtidos são explicitadas, além de sugestões para pesquisas futuras. Espera-se que o tema amplie o foco de análise da interface trabalho-família e auxilie na compreensão da teoria e da prática organizacional.
