The softening and degradation of the cell wall (CW), often mannan enriched, is involved in several processes during development of higher plants, such as meristematic growth, fruit ripening, programmed cell death, and endosperm rupture upon germination. Mannans are also the predominant hemicellulosic CW polymers in many genera of green algae. The endosperm CWs of dry seeds often contain mannan polymers, sometimes in the form of galactomannans (Gal-mannans). The endo-beta-mannanases (MANs) that catalyse the random hydrolysis of the beta-linkage in the mannan backbone are one of the main hydrolytic enzymes involved in the loosening and remodelling of CWs. In germinating seeds, the softening of the endosperm seed CWs facilitates the emergence of the elongating radicle. Hydrolysis and mobilization of endosperm Gal-mannans by MANs also provides a source of nutrients for early seedling growth, since Gal-mannan, besides its structural role, serves as a storage polysaccharide. Therefore, the role of mannans and of their hydrolytic enzymes is decisive in the life cycle of seeds. This review updates and discusses the significance of mannans and MANs in seeds and explores the increasing biotechnological potential of MAN enzymes.

Numerical explorations show how the known periodic solutions of the Hill problem are modified in the case of the attitude-orbit coupling that may occur for large satellite structures. We focus on the case in which the elongation is the dominant satellite’s characteristic and find that a rotating structure may remain with its largest dimension in a plane parallel to the plane of the primaries. In this case, the effect produced by the non-negligible physical length is dynamically equivalent to the perturbation produced by an oblate central body on a mass-point satellite. Based on this, it is demonstrated that the attitude-orbital coupling of a long enough body may change the dynamical characteristics of a periodic orbit about the collinear Lagrangian points.

ABSTRACT On this project, the design and construction of a compact, low cost, data adquisition system for strain and position measurements is dealt with. Such system will be embedded on a bicycle in order to measure certain parameters. These are a) Suspension elongation, b) Frame deformation. For suspension elongation measurements, a homemade, low cost sensor based on a photoemitter-photoreceiver diode couple and a transparent sheet is designed and built. A gradient is printed in the transparent sheet, and two coaxial PVC pipes are used. Strain measurements are carried out by means of a strain gage, Wheatstone bridges and an instrumentation amplifier. Samples are digitized with Silabs’ C8051F020’s ADC, which is used in a development board, and are stored in a serial flash memory. Software for PC on LabView is developed in order to receive, process and visualize the obtained samples from each channel in order to analyze them. Results are obtained from basic tests.

CEN standards have helped to harmonize analytical methods for substrate analysis.Though, for special substrates or constituents the applicability might be Iimited. In this paper a comparative study of implementation of CEN standards to samples of pine bark and vermiculite has been carried out. For composted pine bark, an elongation of the equilibrium period up to 72 instead of 48 hours might increase the accuracy of determinations physical parameters according to EN 13041. For vermiculite, we suggest pycnometry as a feasible technique for the determination of particle density (PD), as the determination of organic matter (OM) as requested by EN 13041 for the calculation of the PD seems not to be applicable for this kind of material.

Endo-β-mannanases (MAN; EC. 3.2.1.78) catalyze the cleavage of β1[RIGHTWARDS ARROW]4 bonds in mannan polymers and have been associated with the process of weakening the tissues surrounding the embryo during seed germination. In germinating Arabidopsis thaliana seeds, the most highly expressed MAN gene is AtMAN7 and its transcripts are restricted to the micropylar endosperm and to the radicle tip just before radicle emergence. Mutants with a T-DNA insertion in AtMAN7 have a slower germination than the wild type. To gain insight into the transcriptional regulation of the AtMAN7 gene, a bioinformatic search for conserved non-coding cis-elements (phylogenetic shadowing) within the Brassicaceae MAN7 gene promoters has been done, and these conserved motifs have been used as bait to look for their interacting transcription factors (TFs), using as a prey an arrayed yeast library from A. thaliana. The basic-leucine zipper TF AtbZIP44, but not the closely related AtbZIP11, has thus been identified and its transcriptional activation upon AtMAN7 has been validated at the molecular level. In the knock-out lines of AtbZIP44, not only is the expression of the AtMAN7 gene drastically reduced, but these mutants have a significantly slower germination than the wild type, being affected in the two phases of the germination process, both in the rupture of the seed coat and in the breakage of the micropylar endosperm cell walls. In the over-expression lines the opposite phenotype is observed.

During seed germination, the endosperm cell walls (CWs) suffer an important weakening process mainly driven by hydrolytic enzymes, such are endo-?- mannanases (MAN; EC. 3.2.1.78) that catalyze the cleavage of ?1?4 bonds in the mannan-polymers. In Arabidopsis thaliana seeds, endo-?-mannanase activity increases during seed imbibition, decreasing after radicle emergence1. AtMAN7 is the most highly expressed MAN gene in seeds upon germination and their transcripts are restricted to the micropylar endosperm and to the radicle tip just before radicle emergence. Mutants with a T-DNA insertion in this gene (K.O. MAN7) have a slower germination rate than the wild type (t50=34 h versus t50=25 h). To gain insight into the transcriptional regulation of the AtMAN7 gene, a bioinformatic search for conserved non-coding cis-elements (phylogenetic shadowing) within the Brassicaceae orthologous MAN7 gene promoters has been done and these conserved motives have been used as baits to look for their interacting transcription factors (TFs), using as a prey an arrayed yeast library of circa 1,200 TFs from A. thaliana. The basic leucine zipper AtbZIP44, but not its closely related ortholog AtbZIP11, has been thus identified and its regulatory function upon AtMAN7 during seed germination validated by different molecular and physiological techniques, such are RT-qPCR analyses, mRNA Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH) experiments, and by the establishment of the germination kinetics of both over-expression (oex) lines and TDNA insertion mutants in AtbZIP44. The transcriptional combinatorial network through which AtbZIP44 regulates AtMAN7 gene expression during seed germination has been further explored through protein-protein interactions between AtbZIP44 and other bZIP members. In such a way, AtbZIP9 has been identified by yeast two-hybrid experiments and its physiological implication in the control of AtMAN7 expression similarly established.

Long-length ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ti rods are produced by equal-channel angular pressing via the conform scheme (ECAP-C) at 200 °C, which is followed by drawing at 200 °C. The evolution of microstructure, macrotexture, and mechanical properties (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, failure stress, uniform elongation, elongation to failure) of pure Ti during this thermo-mechanical processing is studied. Special attention is also paid to the effect of microstructure on the mechanical behavior of the material after macrolocalization of plastic flow. The number of ECAP-C passes varies in the range of 1–10. The microstructure is more refined with increasing number of ECAP-C passes. Formation of homogeneous microstructure with a grain/subgrain size of 200 nm and its saturation after 6 ECAP-C passes are observed. Strength properties increase with increasing number of ECAP passes and saturate after 6 ECAP-C passes to a yield strength of 973 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1035 MPa, and a true failure stress of 1400 MPa (from 625, 750, and 1150 MPa in the as-received condition). The true strain at failure failure decreases after ECAP-C processing. The reduction of area and true strain to failure values do not decrease after ECAP-C processing. The sample after 6 ECAP-C passes is subjected to drawing at 200¯C resulting in reduction of a grain/subgrain size to 150 nm, formation of (10 View the MathML source1¯0) fiber texture with respect to the rod axis, and further increase of the yield strength up to 1190 MPa, the ultimate tensile strength up to 1230 MPa and the true failure stress up to 1600 MPa. It is demonstrated that UFG CP Ti has low resistance to macrolocalization of plastic deformation and high resistance to crack formation after necking.

This paper reports on the thermal behavior and mechanical properties of nanocomposites based on unsaturated polyester resin (UP) modified with poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) and reinforced with an organically modified clay (cloisite 30B). To optimize the dispersion of 30B and the mixing of PCL in the UP resin, two different methods were employed to prepare crosslinked UP–PCL-30B hybrid nanocomposites. Besides, two samples of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) of different molecular weight (PCL2: Mn = 2.103g.mol−1 and PCL50: Mn = 5.104g.mol−1) were used at several concentrations (4, 6, 10 wt%). The 30B concentration was 4 wt% in all the nanocomposites. The morphology of the samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analysis of X-ray patterns reveals that intercalated structures have been found for all ternary nanocomposites, independently of the molecular weight, PCL concentration and the preparation method selected. A slight rise of the glass transition temperature, Tg, is observed in UP/PCL/4%30B ternary nanocomposites regarding to neat UP. The analysis of the tensile properties of the ternary (hybrid) systems indicates that UP/4%PCL2/4%30B nanocomposite improves the tensile strength and elongation at break respect to the neat UP while the Young modulus remains constant

ABSTRACT Plant mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades transduce environmental signals and developmental cues into cellular responses. Among these signals are the pathogen- or microbe-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs or MAMPs) and the damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). These PAMPs/DAMPs, upon recognition by plant pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as Receptor-Like Kinases (RLKs) and Receptor-Like Proteins (RLPs), activate molecular responses, including MAPK cascades, which regulate the onset of PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI). This Thesis describes the functional characterization of the MAPK kinase kinase (MAP3K) YODA (YDA) as a key regulator of Arabidopsis PTI. YDA has been previously described to control several developmental processes, such as stomatal patterning, zygote elongation and inflorescence architecture. We characterized a hypomorphic, non-embryo lethal mutant allele of YDA (elk2 or yda11) that was found to be highly susceptible to biotrophic and necrotrophic pathogens. Remarkably, plants expressing a constitutive active form of YDA (CA-YDA), with a deletion in the N-terminal domain, showed broad-spectrum resistance to different types of pathogens, including fungi, oomycetes and bacteria, indicating that YDA plays a relevant function in plant resistance to pathogens. Our data indicated that this function is independent of the immune responses regulated by the well characterized FLS2 and CERK1 RLKs, which are the PRRs recognizing flg22 and chitin PAMPs, respectively, and are required for Arabidopsis resistance to bacteria and fungi. We demonstrate that YDA controls resistance to the necrotrophic fungus Plectosphaerella cucumerina and stomatal patterning by genetically interacting with ERECTA (ER) RLK, a PRR involved in regulating these processes. In contrast, the genetic interaction between ER and YDA in the regulation of other ER-associated developmental processes was additive, rather than epistatic. Genetic analyses indicated that MPK3, a MAP kinase that functions downstream of YDA in stomatal development, also regulates plant resistance to P. cucumerina in a YDA-dependent manner, suggesting that the YDA-associated MAPK transduction module is shared in plant development and PTI. Our experiments revealed that YDA-mediated resistance was independent of signalling pathways regulated by defensive hormones like salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, abscisic acid or ethylene, and of the tryptophan-derived metabolites pathway, which are involved in plant immunity. In addition, we showed that PAMP-mediated PTI responses, such as the increase of cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration, reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst, MAPK phosphorylation, and expression of defense-related genes are not impaired in the yda11 mutant. Furthermore, the expression of CA-YDA protein does not result in enhanced PTI responses, further suggesting the existence of additional mechanisms of resistance regulated by YDA that differ from those regulated by the PTI receptors FLS2 and CERK1. In line with these observations, our transcriptomic data revealed the over-representation in CA-YDA plants of defensive genes, such as those encoding antimicrobial peptides and cell death regulators, and genes encoding cell wall-related proteins, suggesting a potential link between plant cell wall composition and integrity and broad spectrum resistance mediated by YDA. In addition, phosphoproteomic data revealed an over-representation of genes encoding wall-related proteins in CA-YDA plants in comparison with wild-type plants. The putative role of the ER-YDA pathway in regulating cell wall integrity was further supported by biochemical and glycomics analyses of er, yda11 and CA-YDA cell walls, which revealed significant changes in the cell wall composition of these genotypes compared with that of wild-type plants. In summary, our data indicate that ER and YDA are components of a novel immune pathway that regulates cell wall integrity and defensive responses, which confer broad-spectrum resistance to pathogens.

Despite the socioeconomic importance of walnut trees, poor rooting and recalcitrance to in vitro culture have hampered the establishment of high-yield clonal plantations. To improve walnut micropropagation, we introduced several modifications to current methods and evaluated the effects on microshoot performance and acclimatization. Nine selected genotypes (13-year-old trees) of the commercial hybrid Juglans major 209 x J. regia were cultured in vitro on DKW-C medium supplemented with 4.4 µM BA and 50 µM IBA. A protocol was developed that relies on the use of 0.40 mM phloroglucinol during shoot multiplication, 0.20 mM previous root induction, and 6.81 mg/L Fe3+ (FeEDDHA). Moreover, the addition of 83.2 µM glucose during the root expression phase significantly improved plant survival during acclimatization. Phloroglucinol promoted microshoot elongation but inhibited rooting, especially at concentrations above 0.40 mM. Replacing FeEDTA by FeEDDHA diminished chlorotic symptoms and improved rooting, with up to 90% microshoots developing viable roots. Likewise, glucose was more efficient than sucrose or fructose in promoting plant survival. At the proposed working concentrations, neither glucose nor FeEDDHA caused any noticeable deleterious effect on walnut micropropagation. Microscopic analysis revealed the physical continuity between adventitious roots and stem pericycles. Analysis of leaf genomic DNA with eight polymorphic microsatellite markers was supportive of the clonal fidelity and genetic stability of the micropropagated material. Successful clonal plantations (over 5,800 ramets) have been established by applying this protocol.

ABSTRACT Seed selection for olericultural species is mainly carried out considering weight and size with similar criteria to those applied in cereals and legumes where size and physiological quality are favorably associated. However, information about several species is limited and contradictory regarding the above, leading to the present research. In tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seeds, the effect of weight and size on the physiological quality expressed as germination and vigor was determined. In addition, results of quality evaluation tests were correlated and variables of growth and development were described. Batches of hybrid seeds from four seasons were used. These seeds were produced in a mild warm climate with winter rainfalls and long dry season (32º 54’ and 34° 21´South Latitude). Seed weight and size were determined, additionally internal characteristics such as embryo area and weight as well as endosperm area were evaluated in two seasons. The quality of seeds was established using the germination test and, depending on the year of the study, vigor was measured through accelerated aging tests for plants useful for transplanting and emerged seedlings. Using imaging analysis and X rays, data regarding external and internal size of seeds and seedlings were obtained. Batches were compared through ANOVA and means using Tukey’s test; the association between both variables was determined with Pearson correlations, whereas variables of seed weight and size and their relation to quality tests were analyzed through multiple regressions. A significance level of 0.05 probability was used. Results showed that the size (but not the weight) of tomatoes differentiates quality between batches from several seasons. The germination test was not sensitive enough to discriminate batches in addition to having a limited correlation with the characteristics of seeds, when they were associated, the relation was weak and unfavorable. Vigor test for accelerated aging made the difference between batches and presented low association with physical characteristics of the seeds. The number of germinated seeds in the accelerated aging test was explained by the effect of the seed size, whereas cull fractions were associated with their weight. The vigor test of plants useful for transplanting did not discriminate between batches. The association with seed weight and size was weak. The model associated to this relation explained, with a high coefficient determination, that the seed weight had influence on early emergence, whereas the relation was minor and unfavorable with more developed plants. Vigor test of emerged seedlings discriminated batches of seeds with seedlings of 3 to 5 days after sowing. There was a limited and weak association between this test and the characteristics of seed weight and size. The prediction model for seedlings emerged was particular in each season, when the determination coefficient was high, seed weight and size influenced negatively. Among the physiological quality tests evaluated in tomato seeds, significant correlations were negligible. Between germination and vigor, significant correlations were poor, being only found in some evaluation seasons. There was no association in the vigor tests. In vigor tests for plants useful for transplanting and emerged seedlings, cotyledons reached the highest percentage of dry matter and were strongly correlated with total dry matter. In the test of emerged seedlings, dry matter of radicles partially differentiated batches of seeds as well as total length and radicles. Radicle length was strongly correlated with total seedlings length.

A semiempirical method for predicting the damping efficiency of hysteresis rods on-board small satellites is presented. It is based on the evaluation of dissipating energy variation of different ferromagnetic materials for two different rod shapes: thin film and circular cross-section rods, as a function of their elongation. Based on this formulation, an optimum design considering the size of hysteresis rods, their cross section shape, and layout has been proposed. Finally, the formulation developed was applied to the case of four existing small satellites, whose corresponding in-flight data are published. A good agreement between the estimated rotational speed decay time and the in-flight data has been observed.

ABSTRACT The thesis “1950 around the Louisiana Museum 1970” analyses several works related to domestic space, which were carried out between 1950 and 1970 in Denmark, a golden age of modern architecture. After the isolation and limitations brought about by the war that blighted Europe, young Danish architects were keen to experiment with ideas of an international origin, encouraged by different circumstances. They find the best field of rehearsal to be the domestic space. The best architecture of that period in Denmark should be understood as a system composed of different authors, who have in common with each other many more similarities than differences, thus complimenting each other. In the interests of understanding, the study of a range of figures and buildings is necessary so that this system, the research of which is still in its infancy, can be completed. The thesis proposes a journey of discovery through the names of some of those protagonists who were showcased through their work so that tradition and avant- garde could go hand in hand. The objective is to unveil the keys to Danish Modernity; to recognise, discover and revive the legacy of some of its protagonists in the domestic field whose lessons are seen as entirely of the present. For an architect, the taking on of modern contributions with both moderation and caution, with its intimate relationship with architectural tradition and its own craft, will be one of his hallmarks. With the study set against several projects and versions, one can derive common values among their authors. In the same way their affinities and differences in respect of the same issue emerge. This will allow an understanding of their measures in line with references and influences and enable the defining of the variables of their architectural spaces. The common line between the buildings selected will be their particular relationship with nature and the space with which they integrate. The façade, the place where the relationship between the interior and the landscape would be negotiated, wouldl be the discriminating element in a distinct way for each one of them. It is through each of these facades that this relationship would extend, and far beyond their physical perimeter. The investigation has been structured into six chapters, preceded by an introduction. The first chapter outlines and analyses the backgrounds, figures and buildings most relevant to the Danish Tradition. This is to facilitate the understanding and elucidation of some of the keys to its modernity in the field of architecture, which came about with the clear intention to discover its own identity and expression. This thriving modernity is characterized by its moderate assimilation with foreign cultures with a critical eye, and finds its roots anchored in architectural tradition and its own handcraft. It is forged in the emergence of a common ideal of enormous personality which today has come to be valued as an authentic contribution to the sphere from a culture that was formerly seen as on the peripheries. What will be demonstrated is the path taken by previous generations to these works and the debate that surrounds them. The sensibilities for both the vernacular and the classic, which at first glance may seem contradictory, will dominate the debate with the same veracity and respectability. The so-called third generation of Sigfried Giedion will revive the process between the classic and the vernacular, supported in spirit by the handcraft work and by tradition, with the objective of discovering the “truth” and the “original essence” of the architectural act. The second chapter analyzes the Varming house, built by Eva and Nils Koppel 1953, which is situated in a residential area of Gentofte. This reinterprets Asplund’s vision of an interior landscape extending to the exterior, where we see a break with the conventional sturdy brick shell of the 1930s. It is the most powerful example of the union of tradition and innovation in his their residential work. Their sober forms caught between Danish Functionalism and modernity are characterized by their abstraction and clean shapes which accentuate their prismatic and brutal geometry, The displacement of the parts of which they are composed, one over the other, generate a rhythm. This is produced to varying scales and is closely linked to its forms and the selection of materials – brick and wood – that confer an organic character to the house. The building is anchored to the earth, finding solution at different levels through the study of place and topography. The result is an adaption constructed out of the landscape, in which the building gives form to the place and celebrates the experience of the natural setting. The unity of primitive structures appears to be present. It constitutes an example of “Asplund’s Promenade Idea”. Different routes of exploration within are available to the visitor, allowing for one’s own personal experience of the house, allowing in turn for the vital chance to decide. The third chapter deals with Niels Bohr’s guest pavilion. Built in 1957, it is situated in a wooded area of Tisvilde Hegn and was the architect Vilhelm Wohlert’s first building. Rooted in the Danish Tradition, it represents a renewal based on the absorption of foreign influences: American architecture and the Japanese tradition. The wooden box, perched atop a horizontal terrain, possesses the sensitive character of the living organism, ever-changing in accordance with the variations in daylight and temperature. When opened up, it creates an elongation of the interior space which extends into the surrounding nature and it expands towards the exterior space, allowing for its mobilisation. It establishes an architecture of flux. There is interest in the material, its texture and the emotional effect it inspires. The building’s proportions and dimensions are regulated by a module, which is adjusted by hand, bringing out the great unity of the building. The key to its aesthetic effect is its harmony and equilibrium, which convey serenity and beauty. The meeting with nature is the most fundamental lesson of the project, where a world of relationships softens the personality of the human being. The fourth chapter analyzes the Louisiana Museum project of 1958 in 1958. It was the first project of the Danish architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. Wohlert’s experience in California where he was visited by Bo would be essential to the development of Louisiana, where the Danish identity is fused in assimilation with other cultures, the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, that of the Bahía area and principally the Japanese tradition. The idea of the project was for an integrated work of art: architecture, art and landscape, which would coexist in the same space. A range of different resources would realize the residential character, such as the use of materials taken from a domestic environment, the attainment of human scale and the manner in which light was used. Flat roof plans that show their artificiality and appear to float over glassed galleries. They accentuate the strength of the horizontal plan and establish a zigzag route of marked and measured rhythm. It is a rhythm that has to do with the incarnation of nature’s pulse, which is accompanied with plays of light, as well as material vibrations of different scales, imagery which uncovers a parallel analogy with Japanese culture. Everything is coordinated along a structural frame, which involves a disciplined construction and proportion. Louisiana cherishes nature’s principle of growth, to which its connection is profound. Here is a dynamism expressed through the disposition of the building, which evokes in some projects the Japanese tradition. The white walls possess their own identity as forms in their own right. They advance, extending beyond the line of glass, moving freely along the structural line, accompanying a space that flows and in direct contact with nature that is itself in a constant state of flux. It creates a world of relationships, where dialogue exists between the landscape, art and architecture. The fifth chapter is dedicated to analyzing the Danish architect Halldor Gunnløgsson’s second house, built in 1959. It evokes both Japanese and American architecture but is principally the result of a strong will and personal artistic discipline. The flat roof suspended above a large paved platform – itself continuing the constructed terrain of the place – has great presence and casts a heavy shadow beneath. In the interior, a single space, which can at length be divided and which flows around a central space. The space flows freely, extending through the transparency of its windows which give out onto two contrasting locations: an intimate garden patio, inspiring calm and tranquillity, and the wild nature of the sea which projects the colour of sky, both in a constant state of change. The project is realized in a rigorously formal manner. A perfect balance exists between the abstraction of his structure and his project. The wooden structure, whose order extends beyond the limits of its perimeter, is formed of complete porticos of free elements. It remains exposed, maintaining a close relationship with Mies’ concept of modernity, analogous to classical architecture. The preoccupation with the aesthetic effect is paramount and nothing is improvised. But in addition to this - the combination of materials and the play of textures - there is a tactile quality, a certain eroticism, which lingers all about. The constructive precision and its refinement are close to Mies. The experience of the architectural space is universal. The influence of Japanese architecture, more conceptual than formal, is revealed in a respect for nature. It can be seen in the search for refinement through moderation, the elimination of the superfluous object that distract from the experience of place and the preoccupation with light and shade, where a certain parallel with the dark world of the Nordic winter is established. There is an understanding that space, rather than being an immaterial object defined by material surfaces, extends instead as dynamic interactions. The sixth chapter. This proposes a journey to discover some of the unfamiliar residences of most interest which were constructed in the period, and which form part of the system being investigated. Through the study of comparison and one which is geared towards various themes, diverse conclusions are drawn regarding the system being researched. The expertise in substance and form will be a distinctive characteristic in Denmark, demonstrating an approach to the culture of the Orient, both conceptual and formal, and some common interests in certain American architecture. Its teachings sensitize us to a strengthened sense of proportion, scale, materiality, texture and weight and density of space. It values both the tactile and the visual. There is a sensitivity to nature, to the human, to the landscape and to the integrity of the work.

The aim of this study was to determine the germination characteristics of Phillyrea angustifolia L. and P. latifolia L. seeds in order to develop an optimized propagation protocol for Phillyrea species. Seeds of P. angustifolia and P. latifolia were collected from wild plants growing in Cáceres province (CW Spain) and Andalucía (S Spain), respectively. Percentage of water uptake for P. latifolia seeds was calculated. Seeds with and without endocarp were germinated at different constant and alternating temperatures. Seeds without endocarp were soaked in distilled water or gibberellic acid, and then set to germinate. Seeds with endocarp of both species were stratified at 5 ºC for 30 or 90 days and then the endocarp was completely removed from the seeds before they were sowed. Chemical scarification with sulfuric acid and mechanical scarification were tested on P. angustifolia seeds with endocarp. Phillyrea endocarp was permeable to water, since Phillyrea seeds with endocarp imbibed water, but water uptake was faster when the endocarp was removed. Moreover, the encodarp could interfere mechanically in the emergence of the radicle, since seed germination of Phillyrea species was promoted by the complete removal of the lignified endocarp surrounding each seed. Optimal germination temperature for both species was 15 ºC, and lower temperatures produced secondary dormancy. Soaking in distilled water or gibberellic acid did not significantly enhance seed germination. Cold stratification and chemical scarification treatments were detrimental for seed germination. Keywords cold stratification, Phillyrea species, treatments before sowing, seed germination, seed scarification, lignified endocarp.
