Coastal upwelling systems account for approximately half of global ocean primary production and contribute disproportionately to biologically driven carbon sequestration. Diatoms, silica-precipitating microalgae, constitute the dominant phytoplankton in these productive regions, and their abundance and assemblage composition in the sedimentary record is considered one of the best proxies for primary production. The study of the sedimentary diatom abundance (SDA) and total organic carbon content (TOC) in the five most important coastal upwelling systems of the modern ocean (Iberia-Canary, Benguela, Peru-Humboldt, California and Somalia-Oman) reveals a global-scale positive relationship between diatom production and organic carbon burial. The analysis of SDA in conjunction with environmental variables of coastal upwelling systems such as upwelling strength, satellite-derived net primary production and surface water nutrient concentrations shows different relations between SDA and primary production on the regional scale. At the global-scale, SDA appears modulated by the capacity of diatoms to take up silicic acid, which ultimately sets an upper limit to global export production in these ocean regions.

Abstract The communication skills of humans has grown thanks to the evolution of mobile devices become smaller, manageable, powerful, more autonomy and more affordable. This trend shows that in the near future each person will carry at least one high-performance device. These high-performance devices have some forms of communication incorporated: telephony network, wireless networks, bluetooth, among others. What can also be used for configuring mobile Ad Hoc networks. Ad Hoc mobile networks, are temporary and self-configuring networks, do not need an access point for exchange information between their nodes. Each node performs the router tasks as required. The nodes can move, change location at will. The autonomy of these devices depends on the strategies of how its resources are used. So that the protocols, algorithms or models should be designed to efficiently without impacting device performance seeking a balance between overhead and usability. It is important to define appropriate management of these networks, especially when being used in critical scenarios such as emergencies, natural disasters, wars. The present research shows an efficient solution for managing mobile ad hoc networks. The solution comprises two main components: the definition of a management model for highly available mobile networks and the creation of a hierarchical routing protocol associated with the model. The proposed management model, called High Availability Management Ad Hoc Network (HAMAN) is defined in a four-level structure: access, distribution, intelligence and infrastructure. The components of each level: types of nodes, protocols, structure of a node are shown and detailed. It also explores the communication interfaces between each component and the relationship of these with the levels defined. The Ad Hoc routing protocol proposed, called Backup Cluster Head Protocol( BCHP), use of cluster and hierarchies like strategies. Each cluster has a cluster head which concentrates the routing information and management and sent to the destination when out of cluster coverage area. To improve the availability of the network protocol uses a Backup Cluster Head who assumes the functions of the node of the cluster when it has a problem. The HAMAN model is validated accross the simulation of their BCHP routing protocol. BCHP protocol has been implemented in the simulation tool Network Simulator 2 (NS2) to be simulated, compared and contrasted with a hierarchical routing protocol Cluster Based Routing Protocol (CBRP) and a routing protocol called Reactive Ad Hoc On Demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV).

Many context-aware applications rely on the knowledge of the position of the user and the surrounding objects to provide advanced, personalized and real-time services. In wide-area deployments, a routing protocol is needed to collect the location information from distant nodes. In this paper, we propose a new source-initiated (on demand) routing protocol for location-aware applications in IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor networks. This protocol uses a low power MAC layer to maximize the lifetime of the network while maintaining the communication delay to a low value. Its performance is assessed through experimental tests that show a good trade-off between power consumption and time delay in the localization of a mobile device.

The demand of video contents has rapidly increased in the past years as a result of the wide deployment of IPTV and the variety of services offered by the network operators. One of the services that has especially become attractive to the customers is real-time video on demand (VoD) because it offers an immediate streaming of a large variety of video contents. The price that the operators have to pay for this convenience is the increased traffic in the networks, which are becoming more congested due to the higher demand for VoD contents and the increased quality of the videos. As a solution, in this paper we propose a hierarchical network system for VoD content delivery in managed networks, which implements redistribution algorithm and a redirection strategy for optimal content distribution within the network core and optimal streaming to the clients. The system monitors the state of the network and the behavior of the users to estimate the demand for the content items and to take the right decision on the appropriate number of replicas and their best positions in the network. The system's objectives are to distribute replicas of the content items in the network in a way that the most demanded contents will have replicas closer to the clients so that it will optimize the network utilization and will improve the users' experience. It also balances the load between the servers concentrating the traffic to the edges of the network.

During the 1950s and 1960s the design of irrigation systems in Europe underwent change. Traditional surface irrigation was replaced by pressure irrigation, with the delivery method shifting from a scheduled type to an on-demand one. The advantages obtained with this new system led to a significant development of on-demand pressurised irrigation districts, especially in the Southern countries (France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain). On-demand pressurised irrigation has since evolved in a continuous manner in which, with the purpose of gaining productivity, on-farm equipment and automation instruments have seen improvements. Such developments, along with market fluctuations, reductions in transport costs, globalisation and the influence of agricultural subsidies, have resulted in changes in the crop pattern. The farming of new crops may require more water and the consumption may become greater. In addition to this, other phenomena, such as the frequently-debated effects of climate change, reveal scenarios in which an increase in temperatures and the accompanying reductions in rainfall are expected. One consequence of this would be an increase in irrigation requirements and subsequent impact on irrigation networks. All such circumstances should be taken into account in both the design of new irrigation districts and the upgrading of the existing ones. Irrigation networks should be of a size that allows them to meet increases in consumption. The robustness of the network, defined as its capacity to absorb increments in water requirements, becomes a key point to be taken into account in the design phase. Given that there are several parameters that influence the calculus of design flows, such robustness may be obtained in different ways and at varying costs. In the context of this, the thesis reviews the state of the art, analyses the role and influence of each parameter, establishes a procedure for checking the design and robustness of on-demand irrigation networks, and sets design criteria for selecting the most effective range and combination of parameters that provide the network with such robustness.

In recent future, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) will experience a broad high-scale deployment (millions of nodes in the national area) with multiple information sources per node, and with very specific requirements for signal processing. In parallel, the broad range deployment of WSNs facilitates the definition and execution of ambitious studies, with a large input data set and high computational complexity. These computation resources, very often heterogeneous and driven on-demand, can only be satisfied by high-performance Data Centers (DCs). The high economical and environmental impact of the energy consumption in DCs requires aggressive energy optimization policies. These policies have been already detected but not successfully proposed. In this context, this paper shows the following on-going research lines and obtained results. In the field of WSNs: energy optimization in the processing nodes from different abstraction levels, including reconfigurable application specific architectures, efficient customization of the memory hierarchy, energy-aware management of the wireless interface, and design automation for signal processing applications. In the field of DCs: energy-optimal workload assignment policies in heterogeneous DCs, resource management policies with energy consciousness, and efficient cooling mechanisms that will cooperate in the minimization of the electricity bill of the DCs that process the data provided by the WSNs.

We show a cluster based routing protocol in order to improve the convergence of the clusters and of the network it is proposed to use a backup cluster head. The use of a event discrete simulator is used for the implementation and the simulation of a hierarchical routing protocol called the Backup Cluster Head Protocol (BCHP). Finally it is shown that the BCHP protocol improves the convergence and availability of the network through a comparative analysis with the Ad Hoc On Demand Distance Vector (AODV)[1] routing protocol and Cluster Based Routing Protocol (CBRP)[2]

In this paper, a simulation tool for assisting the deployment of wireless sensor network is introduced and simulation results are verified under a specific indoor environment. The simulation tool supports two modes: deterministic mode and stochastic mode. The deterministic mode is environment dependent in which the information of environment should be provided beforehand. Ray tracing method and deterministic propagation model are employed in order to increase the accuracy of the estimated coverage, connectivity and routing; the stochastic mode is useful for large scale random deployment without previous knowledge on geographic information. Dynamic Source Routing protocol (DSR) and Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing protocol (AODV) are implemented in order to calculate the topology of WSN. Hence this tool gives direct view on the performance of WSN and assists users in finding the potential problems of wireless sensor network before real deployment. At the end, a case study is realized in Centro de Electronica Industrial (CEI), the simulation results on coverage, connectivity and routing are verified by the measurement.
