A series of segmented poly(urethane-urea)s containing 1,3,5 triazine in the hard block and hexamethylene spacers in the soft block was prepared. The hard to soft segment ratio was varied systematically, to afford a series of polymers in which the chromophore concentration varied from 4.2% to 18.1%. Although triazine emission is located in the UV region, the films with higher content of the chromophore emitted a visible blue light (425 nm) when excited at the very red-edge of the absorption band. The photophysical properties of the materials were strongly dependent on the relative amount of triazine moieties along the main chain. Isolated moieties emit in copolymers with small amount of triazine groups, indicating that even though in solid state, these moieties tend to be apart. Two photophysical consequences were observed when the amount of triazine increases: there is some energy transfer process involving isolated moieties with consequent decrease of the lifetime and an additional red-edge emission attributed to aggregated lumophores. The mono-exponential decay observed for the isolated form is substituted by a bi-exponential decay of the aggregated species. The materials were not strong emitters, but since the N-containing triazine moieties are good electron transport groups, the polymers have potential application as electron transport enhancers in various applications. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Samples of paint (P), reused PET (PET-R) and paint/PET-R mixtures (PPET-R) were evaluated using DSC to verify their physical-chemical properties and thermal behavior. Films from paints and PPET-R are visually similar. It was possible to establish that the maximum amount of PET-R that can be added to paint without significantly altering its filming properties is 2%. The cure process (80-203°C) was identified through DSC curves. The kinetic parameters, activation energy (E a) and Arrhenius parameters (A) for the samples containing 0.5 to 1% of PET-R, were calculated using the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa isoconversional method. It was observed that for greater amounts of PET-R added, there is a decrease in the E a values for the cure process. A Kinetic compensation effect (KCE), represented by the equation InA=-2.70+0.31E a was observed for all the samples. The most suitable kinetic model to describe this cure process is the autocatalytic Šesták-Berggreen, model applied to heterogeneous systems. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Pyrazinamide (Pyrazinecarboxamide-PZA) is a drug that is used to treatment tuberculosis. In the present work, the voltammetric behavior of PZA was studied using a screen-printed modified electrode (SPCE). The modified electrode was constructed using poly-histidine films, and it showed an electrocatalytic effect, thus promoting a decrease in PZA reduction potential and improving the voltammetric response. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques have been employed in order to elucidate of the electrodic reaction. The results allowed the proposal that in the PZA reduction, a further chemical reaction occurs that corresponds to a second-order process which is subsequent to the electrode reaction. In addition, a sensitive voltammetric method was developed, and it was successfully applied for PZA determination in human urine samples. The best response was found using SPCE modified with poly-histidine prepared by histidine monomer electropolymerization (SPCE/EPH). The electroanalytical performance of the SPCE/EPH was investigated by linear sweep (LSV), differential pulse (DPV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). A linear relationship between peak current and PZA concentrations was obtained from 9.0 × 10-7 to 1.0 × 10-4 mol L-1 by using DPV. The limit of detection at 5.7 × 10 -7 mol L-1 was estimated, and a relative standard deviation of the 5.0 × 10-6 mol L-1 of PZA of 10 measurement was 3.7%. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we demonstrate that the intrinsic electric field created by a poly(o-methoxyaniline) (POMA) cushion layer hinders the changes in molecular conformation of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) in layer-by-layer with dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBS). This was modeled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations where an energy barrier hampered molecular movements of PPV segments when they were subjected to an electric field comparable to that caused by a charged POMA layer. With restricted changes in molecular conformation, the PPV film exhibited Franck-Condon transitions and the photoexcitation spectra resembled the absorption spectra, in contrast to PPV/DBS films deposited directly on glass, with no POMA cushion. Other effects from the POMA cushion were the reduced number of structural defects, confirmed with Raman spectroscopy, and an enhanced PPV emission at high temperatures (300 K) in comparison with the films on bare glass. The positive effects from the POMA cushion may be exploited for enhanced opto-electronic devices, especially as the intrinsic electric field may assist in separating photoexcited electron-hole pairs in photovoltaic devices. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

The development of new electroluminescence polymers for specific colour tuning in Polymer Light Emitting Devices (PLEDs) is currently one of the most important fields for organic electronics. This work reports a synthesis of a new electroluminescent polymer and the concomitant test as PLED emissive layer. The polymer, synthesised from fluorene, is poly(9,9`-n-dihexil-2,7-fluorenodiilvinylene-alt-2,5thiophene) or PFT The luminescence shows large bands with maxima around 480 nm in absorption and 560 nm in emission. The device was made in a three layer structure, with PEDOT:PSS as hole transport layer, PFT as emissive layer and butyl-PBD as electron transport layer. The electroluminescence spectrum shows a strong band peaked at 540 nm. For an applied voltage of 12 Volt, the brightness at normal angle of viewing is near 10 cd/m(2) and the luminous efficiency is of 0.01 lm/W. A discussion about carrier transport and the electroluminescence properties is made.

Although the biopolymer poly-(3-hydroxybutyrate), P[3HB], presents physicochemical properties that make it an alternative material to conventional plastics, its biotechnological production is quite expensive. As carbon substrates contribute greatly to P[3HB] production cost, the utilization of a cheaper carbon substrate and less demanding micro-organisms should decrease its cost. In the present study a 23 factorial experimental design was applied, aiming to evaluate the effects of using hydrolysed corn starch (HCS) and soybean oil (SBO) as carbon substrates, and cheese whey (CW) supplementation in the mineral medium (MM) on the responses, cell dried weigh (DCW), percentage P[3HB] and mass P[3HB] by recombinant Escherichia coli strains JM101 and DH10B, containing the P[3HB] synthase genes from Cupriavidus necator (ex-Ralstonia eutropha). The analysis of effects indicated that the substrates and the supplement and their interactions had positive effect on CDW. Statistically generated equations showed that, at the highest concentrations of HCS, SO and CW, theoretically it should be possible to produce about 2 g L(1) DCW, accumulating 50% P[3HB], in both strains. To complement this study, the strain that presented the best results was cultivated in MM added to HCS, SBO and CW ( in best composition observed) and complex medium (CM) to compare the obtained P[3HB] in terms of physicochemical parameters. The obtained results showed that the P[3HB] production in MM (1.29 g L(-1)) was approximately 20% lower than in CM (1.63 g L(-1)); however, this difference can be compensated by the lower cost of the MM achieved by the use of cheap renewable carbon sources. Moreover, using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry analyses, it was observed that the polymer produced in MM was the one which presented physicochemical properties (Tg and Tf) that were more similar to those found in the literature for P[3HB].

This study assess the effects of bioceramic and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) composite (BCP/PLGA) on the viability of cultured macrophages and human dental pulp fibroblasts, and we sought to elucidate the temporal profile of the reaction of pulp capping with a composite of bioceramic of calcium phosphate and biodegradable polymer in the progression of delayed dentine bridge after (30 and 60 days) in vivo. Histological evaluation of inflammatory infiltrate and dentin bridge formation were performed after 30 and 60 days. There was similar progressive fibroblast growth in all groups and the macrophages showed viability. The in vivo study showed that of the three experimental groups: BCP/PLGA composite, BCP and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) dentin bridging was the most prevalent (90 %) in the BCP/PLGA composite after 30 days, mild to moderate inflammatory response was present throughout the pulp after 30 days. After 60 days was observed dentine bridging in 60 % and necrosis in 40 %, in both groups. The results indicate that understanding BCP/PLGA composite is biocompatible and by the best tissue response as compared to calcium hydroxide in direct pulp capping may be important in the mechanism of delayed dentine bridge after 30 and 60 days.
