Towards an intelligent graphical interface for linear programming modelling

The increase of computing power of the microcomputers has stimulated the building of direct manipulation interfaces that allow graphical representation of Linear Programming (LP) models. This work discusses the components of such a graphical interface as the basis for a system to assist users in the process of formulating LP problems. In essence, this work proposes a methodology which considers the modelling task as divided into three stages which are specification of the Data Model, the Conceptual Model and the LP Model. The necessity for using Artificial Intelligence techniques in the problem conceptualisation and to help the model formulation task is illustrated.

AI automates substation control

An overview is given on the possibility of controlling the status of circuit breakers (CB) in a substations with the use of a knowledge base that relates some of the operation magnitudes, mixing status variables with time variables and fuzzy sets. It is shown that even when all the magnitudes to be controlled cannot be included in the analysis, it is possible to control the desired status while supervising some important magnitudes as the voltage, power factor, and harmonic distortion, as well as the present status.

Sistema inteligente para la selección de brocas de perforación de pozos

The present work begins with a review of the literature on bit selection methods for oil well drilling. A proposal for the structure and organization of a drilling database and a knowledge base, is described. Previous studies formed the principal elements in the process of selection of drills for proposed drilling. The procedure was implemented as a computer system for the selection of tricone bits. A drilling bit database for three different Brazilian sedimentary basins was obtained for several wells drilled, and knowledge was collected from drilling engineers from different fields both electronically and also by means of interviews. It can be concluded that the selection process showed good results based on tests, which were carried out.

Interactive system for placement and coordination of overcurrent protective devices

In this paper, an expert and interactive system for developing protection system for overhead and radial distribution feeders is proposed. In this system the protective devices can be allocated through heuristic and an optimized way. In the latter one, the placement problem is modeled as a mixed integer non-linear programming, which is solved by genetic algorithm (GA). Using information stored in a database as well as a knowledge base, the computational system is able to obtain excellent conditions of selectivity and coordination for improving the feeder reliability indices. Tests for assessment of the algorithm efficiency were carried out using a real-life 660-nodes feeder. © 2006 IEEE.

Il dresse un bilan de la situation des femmes sur le marché de l’emploi et passe en revue, sur la base des données des enquêtes disponibles, les indicateurs d’accès à et d’utilisation de l’Internet de façon à mesurer les écarts existants entre hommes et femmes dans différentes sphères sociales et géographiques.

Preliminary report on the implementation of the ECLAC work programme subregional activities for the Caribbean. 2008-2009 biennium (Covering the period 1 Janurary 2008- 31 August 2009)

Eighteen months into the implementation of the 2008-2009 biennial strategic work programme, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) Subregional Headquarters for the Caribbean continues to focus on strengthening the delivery of activities through regular internal meetings with programme and research staff and consultations with member countries and other partner institutions. The scaling up of efforts advocating for more evidence-based development policy-making is being advanced utilizing the resources provided through the implementation of an additional seven extrabudgetary-funded projects. This effort is being undertaken in collaboration and in consultation with our major international and regional development partners – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Association of Caribbean States (ACS), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), World Bank, Department for International Development (DFID), Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC). and others. Cultura de paz e UNESCO: uma analítica documental da gestão de corpos no Brasil

Este estudo objetivou realizar uma analítica do poder no documento “Declaração e Programa de Ação sobre uma Cultura de Paz”, documento este legitimado, em 1999, por uma Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas, fixando-se assim como norte prioritário das práticas da agência intitulada Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (UNESCO). Foram utilizados como instrumentos de análise norteadores metodológicos vinculados a muitos operadores retirados do aporte teórico-metodológico produzido por Michel Foucault. Caminhou-se na direção de pensar, problematizar e produzir saber a partir deste movimento de desmontagem de documentos monumentos, tendo como eixo principal o conceito de “Cultura de Paz”. Este mote de cultura de paz possui sua existência atrelada à história das Nações Unidas e às suas agências, sendo produzido e sistematizado a partir de um conjunto de crenças, práticas e associações, que lhe possibilitaram ganhar visibilidade e poder, popularizando-o e tornando-o uma das produções discursivas mais significativas da contemporaneidade. Percorrendo necessariamente por diagonais entre as temáticas UNESCO, governamentalidade e produção de subjetividade, finalizamos esta dissertação com a apresentação do debate a respeito das práticas denominadas cultura de paz e seus efeitos no cotidiano em termos de saber e poder.
