The People in Pain course was set up as a joint initiative of the Departments of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of Queensland. It was instigated in response to the publication of Pain Curricula for Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) in 1994 (1). The first year it was offered, the "People in Pain" course comprised 14 h of lecture content. It was then expanded to encompass 28 h of lectures and seminar involvement. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of participation in a university pain course that meets the IASP pain curricula guidelines to increase health professional students' knowledge about pain. METHODS: Students who participated in the People in Pain course over the first three years were invited to complete the Revised Pain Knowledge and Attitudes Questionnaire (R-PKAQ) pre- and postcourse. Data obtained from 22 students in the short course formed a pilot project, and data from 22 students in the longer version of the course were used in the present study. RESULTS: Examination of the correlation matrix indicated substantial correlations between all R-PKAQ subscales except physiological basis of pain and pharmacological management of pain. In both the pilot project during the first year of the course and the expanded course in the following two years, significant improvement was found in the students' knowledge on five of the six subscales of the R-PKAQ: physiological basis of pain, psychological factors of pain perception, assessment and measurement of pain, cognitive-behavioural methods of pain relief, and pharmacological management of pain. Improvements in the developmental aspects of pain perception subscale failed to reach significance. CONCLUSIONS: An integrated pain course developed according to the pain curriculum guidelines developed by the IASP resulted in increased student knowledge regardless of the length of the program attended.

This is a contribution to ongoing discussion of the international relations issues raised by the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. It acknowledges apparent failings (of analysis or prediction) in the IR literature but then suggests the shortcomings are really the product of divergent traditions of analysis (behaviouralism, structuralism and evolutionism) which isolate different aspects of phenomena for attention. The paper then discusses the contrast between hard power and soft power - to help identify the distinctiveness of the new forms of terrorism (their non-linear objectives and the lack of proportionality involved). It concludes on an encouraging note by urging international cooperation as a solution, even in cases where the protagonists' resentments have tended to militate against conventional channels of dispute resolution.

Este estudo propõe-se a analisar o discurso político de voz feminina, pela pers-pectiva da Análise do Discurso (AD) de linha francesa, a partir da escolha de quatro discursos proferidos pela presidente brasileira Dilma Rousseff, utilizan-do-se das contribuições trazidas por Dominique Maingueneau e Patrick Charaudeau. O eixo dessa pesquisa está no exame do ethos discursivo segundo as noções apresentadas pelos dois estudiosos, para a identificação das características de discurso político proferido por enunciador de voz feminina. Dos estudos de Maingueneau, além da categoria de ethos discursivo, são utilizadas as categorias de interdiscurso e de cenas de enunciação, especialmente as cenografias constituídas nos discursos políticos escolhidos. Das pesquisas semiolinguísticas de Charaudeau, privilegiamos as noções de ethos, de carisma e de pathos aplicadas ao discurso político, buscando caracterizar a maneira de ser e de dizer do sujeito enunciador, revelada pela patemização discursiva. Embora os dois pesquisadores tenham propostas teórico-metodológicas basilares diferentes, busca-se encontrar os pontos de complementação de abordagens para a caracterização do ethos discursivo de voz feminina. Os procedimentos de análises são precedidos por breve histórico do percurso, da participação e da presença da mulher na política nacional e internacional, principalmente nos séculos XX e XXI, a fim de compor o cenário histórico-social atual, uma vez que há o fato inédito e relevante de uma mulher tornar-se a primeira presidente do Brasil. As principais discussões realizadas neste estudo giram em torno aos macrotemas e microtemas dos discursos selecionados, suas cenografias ali constituídas, destacando as marcas, que influem na caracterização de ethos, incluindo aquelas propostas por Charaudeau, tais como, de autoridade, de credibilidade, de seriedade e de co-ragem. Associado a esses aspectos que ajudam a caracterizar o ethos, são analisados também os elementos constituintes da memória discursiva, articulando-os com as formações discursivas inerentes aos campos discursivos aos quais pertencem. Por fim, realiza-se uma síntese das análises empreendidas e conclui-se com o detalhamento da repercussão observada na imagem da mulher na política, discorrendo-se sobre ethos de enunciador de voz feminina em discurso político.

Este trabalho investigou percepções de saúde e de envelhecimento ativo entre homens idosos, assim como seus níveis de qualidade de vida antes e após intervenção psicoeducativa em grupo destinada à promoção de autocuidado. Treze homens de 62 a 78 anos, casados e aposentados, participaram de nove encontros temáticos. Os dados foram obtidos mediante entrevistas individuais semiestruturadas e aplicação dos questionários para aferir qualidade de vida WHOQOL-OLD e WHOQOL-BREF. Os resultados evidenciaram que os idosos, em sua maioria, mantinham estilos de vida ativos, avaliavam positivamente o estado pessoal de saúde e concebiam saúde em uma perspectiva biopsicossocial, aspectos que se mostraram fortalecidos após a intervenção. Houve estabilidade nos escores de qualidade de vida, com diferença significativa (p<0,05) para o domínio participação social do WHOQOL-OLD. O estudo forneceu um modelo de intervenção para fortalecer o envelhecimento bem-sucedido entre homens idosos. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT

The article attempt to demonstrate the evolution of international law in connected to the subject of the forced immigrants'. The author supported by several texts, cases and resolutions of the regional level, through interamerican court and European court, and the global level, through the international court. It's shown the evolution that occurred in international law in millennium turn over, which recognize the immigrants' rights. However, it's stressed the necessity of the development of those laws connected to the theme e the recognition, from the States; the importance of law's that effort to ensure the respect to human rights relative to the immigrants and their families.

The central goal of this paper is thinking about the Brazilian military power and its linking to the international ambitions of the country in the 21st century. After a comparative analysis to other BRICs and with a historical one about Brazil's strategic irrelevance, we aim to establish what the minimum military capacity Brazil would need in order to meet the country's latest international interests. Similarly, it will be discussed if the National Strategy of Defense, approved in 2008, and the recent strategic agreements signed with France represent one more step toward this minimum military capacity.

Since Cardoso and during Lula's Administration, the international order has undergone significant changes. These changes have allowed the Brazilian foreign policy to mitigate internal effects of an order established by others and, at the same time, to become an active participant in the formulation of the new order. To democratize globalization became the mainspring of Brazilian foreign policy. In the scope, President Lula has maintained the tradition of formulating and programming foreign policy as a State policy, and also has fostered the logistic strategy of incorporation of Brazil into the international scene.

In the last fifty years, Brazil began a rapid process of structural transformation, following the first stage of industrial development in the 1930s. Currently the country integrates the small group of countries which evolved from an initial peripheral and subordinate insertion dating back to the nineteenth century, part of the most dynamic segment of the semiperiphery. But this category, intermediate between the "maturity" and "backwardness", according Modernization theorists, or between the "center" and "periphery", as theorists of the Dependence defend, has undergone a process of overcoming considerable positive progress in the direction of the group of states that dominate the current world system. In the last five years, climate change has been established as a central civilizational driver of our time. As a result of this development, the most diversified social processes - as well as the fields of science which study them - have had their dynamics altered. In International Relations, this double challenge could be explained as follows: 1) in empirical terms, climate change imposes a deepening of cooperation levels on the international community, considering the global common character of the atmosphere; and 2) to International Relations as a discipline, climate change demands from the scientific community a conceptual review of the categories designed to approach the development of global climate governance. The goal of this article is to discuss in both conceptual and empirical terms the structure of global climate change governance, through an exploratory research, aiming at identifying the key elements that allow understanding its dynamics. To do so, we rely on the concept of climate powers. This discussion is grounded in the following framework: we now live in an international system under conservative hegemony that is unable to properly respond to the problems of interdependence, among which - and mainly -, the climate issue.

The European Union's (EU) decision to include aviation into the Emissions Trade Scheme was heatedly contested. Countries around the world, but mainly the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa group (BRICS) and the US, denounced the EU's initiate as illegal and unilateral. Following a decade of frustrated negotiations at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), this paper interrogates why such measure, in principle climate-friendly, inspired so much global resentment. I argue that concerns with competitiveness and risks of legal inconsistency are important, but insufficient elements to explain the core of the conflict. The paper suggests that the EU was strongly criticized because third countries perceived this action as an imposed solution, which fostered an environment of distrust. Therefore, I claim that the problem has more to do with a normative divide than with a substantive divergence on what should be done regarding aviation emissions. My analysis is informed by the present literature on the links between trade and climate change, but gives particular weight to first-hand information through interviews with key stakeholders. The paper is divided in three parts. First, it presents the scope of the EU directive in historical perspective. Second, it explores the EU's measure through three different angles: legal, economical and political. The final part explores some possible solutions to overcome these divergences.

This paper analyzes People's Republic of China (PRC) economic and political ascendance in the 21st century focusing on the evolution of the sui generis economic development model and its significances of the evolution of relationship between China and the developing countries in the peripheral "Global South." The objective of this article is to analyze the relationship between China and the Global South (Africa and South America) in the 21st century, characterized as a new Center-periphery global network power based on trade and investment that we call as "Asian Consensus."
