The extended visual network, which includes occipital, temporal and parietal posterior cortices, is a system characterized by an intrinsic connectivity consisting of bidirectional projections. This network is composed of feedforward and feedback projections, some hierarchically arranged and others bypassing intermediate areas, allowing direct communication across early and late stages of processing. Notably, the early visual cortex (EVC) receives considerably more feedback and lateral inputs than feedforward thalamic afferents, placing it at the receiving end of a complex cortical processing cascade, rather than just being the entrance stage of cortical processing of retinal input. The critical role of back-projections to visual cortices has been related to perceptual awareness, amplification of neural activity in lower order areas and improvement of stimulus processing. Recently, significant results have shown behavioural evidence suggesting the importance of reentrant projections in the human visual system, and demonstrated the feasibility of inducing their reversible modulation through a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) paradigm named cortico-cortical paired associative stimulation (ccPAS). Here, a novel research line for the study of recurrent connectivity and its plasticity in the perceptual domain was put forward. In the present thesis, we used ccPAS with the aim of empowering the synaptic efficacy, and thus the connectivity, between the nodes of the visuocognitive system to evaluate the impact on behaviour. We focused on driving plasticity in specific networks entailing the elaboration of relevant social features of human faces (Chapters I & II), alongside the investigation of targeted pathways of sensory decisions (Chapter III). This allowed us to characterize perceptual outcomes which endorse the prominent role of the EVC in visual awareness, fulfilled by the activity of back-projections originating from distributed functional nodes.

This study aims at defining the tectonic evolution of a portion of the Caucasian region, in Georgia, which experienced a complex pattern of deformation events throughout Mesozoic and Cenozoic times. An integrated approach was applied to unravel the thermo-tectonic history of three inverted sedimentary basins from burial to exhumation. Additionally, this dissertation provides examples of structural inversion of sedimentary basins in response to far-field transmission of compressional stresses away from collision zones, contributing to elucidate the dynamics of stress partitioning during continental collisions. The Adjara-Trialeti fold-and-thrust belt in south-western Georgia results from the structural inversion of a Middle Eocene continental back-arc rift basin opened as a consequence of the Northern Neotethys slab rollback. This study quantitatively defines the subsidence and exhumation history of the Adjara-Trialeti basin, constraining its Middle Miocene inception of structural inversion. The western Kura Basin is a flexural foreland basin trapped between the Lesser Caucasus to the south and the Greater Caucasus to the north. This study constrains successive and competing episodes of flexural subsidence during Oligocene-Miocene times, followed by partial inversion through thick- and thin-skinned tectonics in response to continued convergence between the adjacent, oppositely verging orogenic belts. The Greater Caucasus results from the structural inversion of a Jurassic continental back-arc basin, but the timing of its growth is still debated. An across-strike transect in its southern central domain was studied, indicating that this sector of the Greater Caucasus experienced two phases of structural inversion during Late Cretaceous-Paleocene and Late Miocene times. Overall, the dataset presented in this dissertation points to a complex and episodic history of incremental deformation, characterised by successive phases of extensional and compressional tectonics which developed in response to sequential terrane accretion at the southwestern margin of Eurasia since Late Cretaceous times, eventually determining the current configuration of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor diagnosed at extended disease SCLC (ES-SCLC) stage in about 70% of cases. The new standard of treatment for patients with ES-SCLC is a combination of platinum-etoposide chemotherapy and atezolizumab or durvalumab, two programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitory monoclonal antibodies (mAb). However, the benefit derived from the addition of PD-L1 inhibitors to chemotherapy in ES-SCLC was limited and restricted to a subset of patients. The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the most important pro-angiogenic factor implicated in cancer angiogenesis, which is abundant in SCLC and associated with poor prognosis. Antiangiogenic agents, such as bevacizumab, a humanized mAb against VEGF, added to platinum-etoposide chemotherapy improved progression-free survival in SCLC in two trials, but it did not translate into a benefit in overall survival. Nevertheless, VEGF has also acts as a mediator of an immunosuppressive microenvironment and its inhibition can revert the immune-suppressive tumor microenvironment and potentially enhance the efficacy of immunotherapies. Based on available preclinical data, we hypothesized that VEGF inhibition by bevacizumab could improve atezolizumab efficacy in a synergistic way and designed a phase II single-arm trial of bevacizumab in combination with carboplatin, etoposide, and atezolizumab as first-line treatment in ES-SCLC. The trial, which is still ongoing, enrolled 53 patients, including those with treated or untreated asymptomatic brain metastases (provided criteria are met), who received atezolizumab, bevacizumab, carboplatin and etoposide for 4-6 cycles (induction phase), followed by maintenance with atezolizumab and bevacizumab for a maximum of 18 total cycles or until disease progression, patient refusal, unacceptable toxicity. The evaluation of efficacy of the experimental combination in terms of 1-year overall survival rate is not yet mature (primary objective of the trial). The combination was feasible and the toxicity profile manageable (secondary objective of the trial).

Amid the remarkable growth of innovative technologies, particularly immersive technologies like Extended Reality (XR) (comprising of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) & Mixed Reality (MR)), a transformation is unfolding in the way we collaborate and interact. The current research takes the initiative to explore XR’s potential for co-creation activities and proposes XR as a future co-creation platform. It strives to develop a XR-based co-creation system, actively engage stakeholders in the co-creation process, with the goal of enhancing their creative businesses. The research leverages XR tools to investigate how they can enhance digital co-creation methods and determine if the system facilitates efficient and effective value creation during XR-based co-creation sessions. In specific terms, the research probes into whether the XR-based co-creation method and environment enhances the quality and novelty of ideas, reduce communication challenges by providing better understanding of the product, problem or process and optimize the process in terms of reduction in time and costs. The research introduces a multi-user, multi-sensory collaborative and interactive XR platform that adapts to various use-case scenarios. This thesis also presents the user testing performed to collect both qualitative and quantitative data, which serves to substantiate the hypothesis. What sets this XR system apart is its incorporation of fully functional prototypes into a mixed reality environment, providing users with a unique dimension within an immersive digital landscape. The outcomes derived from the experimental studies demonstrate that XR-based co-creation surpasses conventional desktop co-creation methods and remarkably, the results are even comparable to a full mock-up test. In conclusion, the research underscores that the utilization of XR as a tool for co-creation generates substantial value. It serves as a method that enhances the process, an environment that fosters interaction and collaboration, and a platform that equips stakeholders with the means to engage effectively.

The 1d extended Hubbard model with soft-shoulder potential has proved itself to be very difficult to study due its non solvability and to competition between terms of the Hamiltonian. Given this, we tried to investigate its phase diagram for filling n=2/5 and range of soft-shoulder potential r=2 by using Machine Learning techniques. That led to a rich phase diagram; calling U, V the parameters associated to the Hubbard potential and the soft-shoulder potential respectively, we found that for V<5 and U>3 the system is always in Tomonaga Luttinger Liquid phase, then becomes a Cluster Luttinger Liquid for 57, with a quasi-perfect crystal in the U<3V/2 and U>5 region. Finally we found that for U<5 and V>2-3 the system shall maintain the Cluster Luttinger Liquid structure, with a residual in-block single particle mobility.

The increasing interest in the decarbonization process led to a rapidly growing trend of electrification strategies in the automotive industry. In particular, OEMs are pushing towards the development and production of efficient electric vehicles. Moreover, research on electric motors and their control are exploding in popularity. The increase of computational power in embedded control hardware is allowing the development of new control algorithm, such as sensorless control strategy. Such control strategy allows the reduction of the number of sensors, which implies reduced costs and increased system reliability. The thesis objective is to realize a sensorless control for high-performance automotive motors. Several algorithms for rotor angle observers are implemented in the MATLAB and Simulink environment, with emphasis on the Kalman observer. One of the Kalman algorithms already available in the literature has been selected, implemented and benchmarked, with emphasis on its comparison with the Sliding Mode observer. Different models characterized by increasing levels of complexity are simulated. A simplified synchronous motor with ”constant parameters”, controlled by an ideal inverter is first analyzed; followed by a complete model defined by real motor maps, and controlled by a switching inverter. Finally, it was possible to test the developed algorithm on a real electric motor mounted on a test bench. A wide range of different electric motors have been simulated, which led to an exhaustive review of the sensorless control algorithm. The final results underline the capability of the Kalman observer to effectively control the motor on a real test bench.

To compare time and risk to biochemical recurrence (BR) after radical prostatectomy of two chronologically different groups of patients using the standard and the modified Gleason system (MGS). Cohort 1 comprised biopsies of 197 patients graded according to the standard Gleason system (SGS) in the period 1997/2004, and cohort 2, 176 biopsies graded according to the modified system in the period 2005/2011. Time to BR was analyzed with the Kaplan-Meier product-limit analysis and prediction of shorter time to recurrence using univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. Patients in cohort 2 reflected time-related changes: striking increase in clinical stage T1c, systematic use of extended biopsies, and lower percentage of total length of cancer in millimeter in all cores. The MGS used in cohort 2 showed fewer biopsies with Gleason score ≤ 6 and more biopsies of the intermediate Gleason score 7. Time to BR using the Kaplan-Meier curves showed statistical significance using the MGS in cohort 2, but not the SGS in cohort 1. Only the MGS predicted shorter time to BR on univariate analysis and on multivariate analysis was an independent predictor. The results favor that the 2005 International Society of Urological Pathology modified system is a refinement of the Gleason grading and valuable for contemporary clinical practice.

In Brazil, the consumption of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) is increasing annually, but there are no experimental studies concerning the phenolic compound contents of commercial EVOO. The aim of this work was to optimise the separation of 17 phenolic compounds already detected in EVOO. A Doehlert matrix experimental design was used, evaluating the effects of pH and electrolyte concentration. Resolution, runtime and migration time relative standard deviation values were evaluated. Derringer's desirability function was used to simultaneously optimise all 37 responses. The 17 peaks were separated in 19min using a fused-silica capillary (50μm internal diameter, 72cm of effective length) with an extended light path and 101.3mmolL(-1) of boric acid electrolyte (pH 9.15, 30kV). The method was validated and applied to 15 EVOO samples found in Brazilian supermarkets.

The poison frog genus Ameerega (Dendrobatidae) currently contains 32 species. They are distributed from central Brazil into western Amazonia to the lower Andean versant. In addition, three trans-Andean species have been allocated to Ameerega (Andrade et al. 2013; Frost 2014). Ameerega berohoka (Vaz-Silva & Maciel 2011) was described based on specimens from central Brazil (type-locality: Arenópolis, GO) and it is assumed to occur in parts of western and southwestern state of Goiás (Frost 2014). More recently, Andrade et al. (2013) extended its distribution to the state of Mato Grosso. Here we re-describe the advertisement call of A. berohoka, providing additional information regarding its temporal structure and spectral traits. Our observations also consist of a new distribution record for this species to the state of Mato Grosso.

Garlic is a spice and a medicinal plant; hence, there is an increasing interest in 'developing' new varieties with different culinary properties or with high content of nutraceutical compounds. Phenotypic traits and dominant molecular markers are predominantly used to evaluate the genetic diversity of garlic clones. However, 24 SSR markers (codominant) specific for garlic are available in the literature, fostering germplasm researches. In this study, we genotyped 130 garlic accessions from Brazil and abroad using 17 polymorphic SSR markers to assess the genetic diversity and structure. This is the first attempt to evaluate a large set of accessions maintained by Brazilian institutions. A high level of redundancy was detected in the collection (50 % of the accessions represented eight haplotypes). However, non-redundant accessions presented high genetic diversity. We detected on average five alleles per locus, Shannon index of 1.2, HO of 0.5, and HE of 0.6. A core collection was set with 17 accessions, covering 100 % of the alleles with minimum redundancy. Overall FST and D values indicate a strong genetic structure within accessions. Two major groups identified by both model-based (Bayesian approach) and hierarchical clustering (UPGMA dendrogram) techniques were coherent with the classification of accessions according to maturity time (growth cycle): early-late and midseason accessions. Assessing genetic diversity and structure of garlic collections is the first step towards an efficient management and conservation of accessions in genebanks, as well as to advance future genetic studies and improvement of garlic worldwide.

Hevea brasiliensis is a native species of the Amazon Basin of South America and the primary source of natural rubber worldwide. Due to the occurrence of South American Leaf Blight disease in this area, rubber plantations have been extended to suboptimal regions. Rubber tree breeding is time-consuming and expensive, but molecular markers can serve as a tool for early evaluation, thus reducing time and costs. In this work, we constructed six different cDNA libraries with the aim of developing gene-targeted molecular markers for the rubber tree. A total of 8,263 reads were assembled, generating 5,025 unigenes that were analyzed; 912 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) represented new transcripts, and two sequences were highly up-regulated by cold stress. These unigenes were scanned for microsatellite (SSR) regions and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In total, 169 novel EST-SSR markers were developed; 138 loci were polymorphic in the rubber tree, and 98 % presented transferability to six other Hevea species. Locus duplication was observed in H. brasiliensis and other species. Additionally, 43 SNP markers in 13 sequences that showed similarity to proteins involved in stress response, latex biosynthesis and developmental processes were characterized. cDNA libraries are a rich source of SSR and SNP markers and enable the identification of new transcripts. The new markers developed here will be a valuable resource for linkage mapping, QTL identification and other studies in the rubber tree and can also be used to evaluate the genetic variability of other Hevea species, which are valuable assets in rubber tree breeding.

This study compares the impact of obesogenic environment (OE) in six different periods of development on sperm parameters and the testicular structure of adult rats and their correlations with sex steroid and metabolic scenario. Wistar rats were exposed to OE during gestation (O1), during gestation/lactation (O2), from weaning to adulthood (O3), from lactation to adulthood (O4), from gestation to sexual maturity (O5), and after sexual maturation (O6). OE was induced by a 20% fat diet, and control groups were fed a balanced diet (4% fat). Serum leptin levels and adiposity index indicate that all groups were obese, except for O1. Three progressive levels of impaired metabolic status were observed: O1 presented insulin resistance, O2 were insulin resistant and obese, and groups O3, O4, and O5 were insulin resistant, obese, and diabetic. These three levels of metabolic damage were proportional to the increase of leptin and decreased circulating testosterone. The impairment in the daily sperm production (DSP) paralleled these three levels of metabolic and hormonal damage being marginal in O1, increasing in O2, and being higher in groups O3, O4, O5, and O6. None of the OE periods affected the sperm transit time in the epididymis, and the lower sperm reserves were caused mainly by impaired DSP. In conclusion, OE during sexual maturation markedly reduces the DSP at adulthood in the rat. A severe reduction in the DSP also occurs in OE exposure during gestation/lactation but not in gestation, indicating that breast-feeding is a critical period for spermatogenic impairment under obesogenic conditions.

To analyze the main factors that influence bone mass in children and teenagers assessed by quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of the phalanges. A systematic literature review was performed according to the PRISMA method with searches in databases Pubmed/Medline, SciELO and Bireme for the period 2001-2012, in English and Portuguese languages, using the keywords: children, teenagers, adolescent, ultrasound finger phalanges, quantitative ultrasound of phalanges, phalangeal quantitative ultrasound. 21 articles were included. Girls had, in QUS, Amplitude Dependent Speed of Sound (AD-SoS) values higher than boys during pubertal development. The values of the parameters of QUS of the phalanges and dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) increased with the increase of the maturational stage. Anthropometric variables such as age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), lean mass showed positive correlations with the values of QUS of the phalanges. Physical activity has also been shown to be positively associated with increased bone mass. Factors such as ethnicity, genetics, caloric intake and socioeconomic profile have not yet shown a conclusive relationship and need a larger number of studies. QUS of the phalanges is a method used to evaluate the progressive acquisition of bone mass during growth and maturation of individuals in school phase, by monitoring changes that occur with increasing age and pubertal stage. There were mainly positive influences in variables of sex, maturity, height, weight and BMI, with similar data when compared to the gold standard method, the DXA.
