ABSTRACT: The school violence, understood as any act performed in isolation or in groups in educational institutions or in its surroundings, involving the student body and / or teaching of these establishments, is a reality faced by them and recognized throughout society. From this perspective, this research investigated the issue in public education institutions in the city of Aracaju, capital of Sergipe, Brazil. The research allow us to demonstrate some of the causes and consequences of violence, and understand the reasons that allow its development in public schools, field of research, with subsidies not only in science education as well as in legal science, since it bases its ideas on Laws and Regulations that guide and typify the behavior of the individual in society. In this research, exploratory and descriptive character, of an analytical view, consistent with the proposed objectives and issues to the object of this study - resorted to a field research with quantitative and qualitative analysis with results presented in graphs, charts and records of occurrence, using as group studied public schools in Aracaju, through a questionnaire applied to directors and employees to visit in the place. The research is based on theories that motivate the results found that “the man is the product of the environment”, this means, the society in which they live and the family have an influence and a key role in shaping the character of the individual, be it good or bad. ABSTRACT: This study investigates the role of school principal as a formation agent of the school culture. Investigated the concepts of culture, school culture, school management, both focusing on the action director. As a research hypothesis, it is considered that personal beliefs, aspirations, attitudes, vision of education, management model and professional and ethical commitment made at last respects idiosyncratic director's influence decisively the culture of a school, passing by the team management (leadership, coordination), faculty, staff and finally reaching the students and their families. It is thought that this is due in large part to the leadership and authority connected to the central role that the director has in the school and how it relates to the difficulties that the democratization processes of school management to find an effective action. Among the objectives of this study are collect information on the role of the school manager, identify characteristics of school management that promotes the formation of a school culture; compare the conceptions of school administration as a promoter of a school culture based on conceptions of directors and engineers involved in the management process. This study seeks to contribute to both, and thus an emancipatory purpose in the sense that believes the school management as an engine for articulating and processes involved - faculty, staff, students and community - in search of a school environment that is translated and recognized as its culture, thus defining a way to be a school, a sort of school identity. As a result, we found that the school management plays a decisive role in shaping an environment where you create a culture of school, he shares his vision of leadership with the management team and provides a clear direction for their actions. Proposes to invest in the production of school contexts that promote the construction of democratic practices, where the school culture can be experienced by everyone and from everyone.

School management is a recent worry in the history of Brazilian education. Still today the administrative theories from the industrial business model are reference for education, despite its specificities. This situation is not a misconception. Care is necessary to attempt to the goal differences from schools to companies. The aim of this research was to analyze the influence of administrative practices in the quality of education in the Brazilian state of Pará, taking as empiric reference the educational-administrative reality of the 10th Educational Regional Unit (ERU), in the period from 2007 to 2010. The study was made by means of document analysis, questionnaires and the revision of theoretic fundaments, analyzing the results of the national exams of high schools and the practice of ERU school directors and schools of the same unit. Our conclusion is that among managers, the is a lack of knowledge and lack of practice of an adequate theory for education, what has created problems to the students evaluation, whose right to success is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution of Brazil. The academics and managers of education would need to discuss and reach the propositions of a management theory that meets the aims and goals of education

Quality management Self-evaluation of the organisation Citizens/customers satisfaction Impact on society evaluation Key performance evaluation Good practices comparison (Benchmarking) Continuous improvement In professional environments, when quality assessment of museums is discussed, one immediately thinks of the honourableness of the directors and curators, the erudition and specialisation of knowledge, the diversity of the gathered material and study of the collections, the collections conservation methods and environmental control, the regularity and notoriety of the exhibitions and artists, the building’s architecture and site, the recreation of environments, the museographic equipment design. We admit that the roles and attributes listed above can contribute to the definition of a specificity of museological good practice within a hierarchised functional perspective (the museum functions) and for the classification of museums according to a scale, validated between peers, based on “installed” appreciation criteria, enforced from above downwards, according to the “prestige” of the products and of those who conceive them, but that say nothing about the effective satisfaction of the citizen/customers and the real impact on society. There is a lack of evaluation instruments that would give us a return of all that the museum is and represents in contemporary society, focused on being and on the relation with the other, in detriment of the ostentatious possession and of the doing in order to meet one’s duties. But it is only possible to evaluate something by measurement and comparison, on the basis of well defined criteria, from a common grid, implicating all of the actors in the self-evaluation, in the definition of the aims to fulfil and in the obtaining of results.

More data will be produced in the next five years than in the entire history of human kind, a digital deluge that marks the beginning of the Century of Information. Through a year-long consultation with UK researchers, a coherent strategy has been developed, which will nurture Century-of-Information Research (CIR); it crystallises the ideas developed by the e-Science Directors' Forum Strategy Working Group. This paper is an abridged version of their latest report which can be found at: http://wikis.nesc.ac.uk/escienvoy/Century_of_Information_Research_Strategy which also records the consultation process and the affiliations of the authors. This document is derived from a paper presented at the Oxford e-Research Conference 2008 and takes into account suggestions made in the ensuing panel discussion. The goals of the CIR Strategy are to facilitate the growth of UK research and innovation that is data and computationally intensive and to develop a new culture of 'digital-systems judgement' that will equip research communities, businesses, government and society as a whole, with the skills essential to compete and prosper in the Century of Information. The CIR Strategy identifies a national requirement for a balanced programme of coordination, research, infrastructure, translational investment and education to empower UK researchers, industry, government and society. The Strategy is designed to deliver an environment which meets the needs of UK researchers so that they can respond agilely to challenges, can create knowledge and skills, and can lead new kinds of research. It is a call to action for those engaged in research, those providing data and computational facilities, those governing research and those shaping education policies. The ultimate aim is to help researchers strengthen the international competitiveness of the UK research base and increase its contribution to the economy. The objectives of the Strategy are to better enable UK researchers across all disciplines to contribute world-leading fundamental research; to accelerate the translation of research into practice; and to develop improved capabilities, facilities and context for research and innovation. It envisages a culture that is better able to grasp the opportunities provided by the growing wealth of digital information. Computing has, of course, already become a fundamental tool in all research disciplines. The UK e-Science programme (2001-06)—since emulated internationally—pioneered the invention and use of new research methods, and a new wave of innovations in digital-information technologies which have enabled them. The Strategy argues that the UK must now harness and leverage its own, plus the now global, investment in digital-information technology in order to spread the benefits as widely as possible in research, education, industry and government. Implementing the Strategy would deliver the computational infrastructure and its benefits as envisaged in the Science & Innovation Investment Framework 2004-2014 (July 2004), and in the reports developing those proposals. To achieve this, the Strategy proposes the following actions: support the continuous innovation of digital-information research methods; provide easily used, pervasive and sustained e-Infrastructure for all research; enlarge the productive research community which exploits the new methods efficiently; generate capacity, propagate knowledge and develop skills via new curricula; and develop coordination mechanisms to improve the opportunities for interdisciplinary research and to make digital-infrastructure provision more cost effective. To gain the best value for money strategic coordination is required across a broad spectrum of stakeholders. A coherent strategy is essential in order to establish and sustain the UK as an international leader of well-curated national data assets and computational infrastructure, which is expertly used to shape policy, support decisions, empower researchers and to roll out the results to the wider benefit of society. The value of data as a foundation for wellbeing and a sustainable society must be appreciated; national resources must be more wisely directed to the collection, curation, discovery, widening access, analysis and exploitation of these data. Every researcher must be able to draw on skills, tools and computational resources to develop insights, test hypotheses and translate inventions into productive use, or to extract knowledge in support of governmental decision making. This foundation plus the skills developed will launch significant advances in research, in business, in professional practice and in government with many consequent benefits for UK citizens. The Strategy presented here addresses these complex and interlocking requirements.

This research examines dynamics associated with new representational technologies in complex organizations through a study of the use of a Single Model Environment, prototyping and simulation tools in the mega-project to construct Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, London. The ambition of the client, BAA. was to change industrial practices reducing project costs and time to delivery through new contractual arrangements and new digitally-enabled collaborative ways of working. The research highlights changes over time and addresses two areas of 'turbulence' in the use of: 1) technologies, where there is a dynamic tension between desires to constantly improve, change and update digital technologies and the need to standardise practices, maintaining and defending the overall integrity of the system; and 2) representations, where dynamics result from the responsibilities and liabilities associated with sharing of digital representations and a lack of trust in the validity of data from other firms. These dynamics are tracked across three stages of this well-managed and innovative project and indicate the generic need to treat digital infrastructure as an ongoing strategic issue.

This chapter develops a comparative analysis of sequences from the films of two directors who made eloquent use of widescreen formats but who seem to be in all other respects wholly contrasting figures. The article includes a historiographical element in grounding the argument in the critical history of widescreen aesthetics and the directors’ work. It moves from a close analysis of three sequences, and an exploration of strategies in the use of the widescreen frame, to broader questions of style and its interpretation, narration, point of view and epistemology. The article connects with other work on Preminger, and on the critical history of mise-en-scène, while extending this through the comparative analysis of two figures from different Hollywood contexts and characterised by very different approaches.

The argument for the inclusion of real estate in the mixed-asset portfolio has concentrated on examining its effect in reducing the portfolio risk - the time series standard deviation (TSSD), mainly using ex-post time series data. However, the past as such is not really relevant to the long-term institutional investors, such as the insurance companies and pension funds, who are more concerned the terminal wealth (TW) of their investments and the variability of this wealth, the terminal wealth standard deviation (TWSD), since it is from the TW of their investment portfolio that policyholders and pensioners will derive their benefits. These kinds of investors with particular holding period requirements will be less concerned about the within period volatility of their portfolios and more by the possibility that their portfolio returns will fail to finance their liabilities. This variability in TW will be closely linked to the risk of shortfall in the quantity of assets needed to match the institution’s liabilities. The question remains therefore can real estate enhance the TW of the mixed-asset portfolio and/or reduce the variability of the TW. This paper uses annual data from the United Kingdom (UK) for the period 1972-2001 to test whether real estate is an asset class that not only reduces ex-post portfolio risk but also enhances portfolio TW and/or reduces the variability of TW.
WAXS studies of global molecular orientation induced in nematic liquid crystals by simple shear flow
Resumo:
Global molecular orientation function coefficients for the nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano 4'-nn -pentylbiphenyl (5CB) in shear flow are presented, being extracted from 2-dimensional Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering data. A linear increase in orientation parameter P2 is observed with a logarithmic increase in shear rate. It is proposed that this arises from an increased number of LC directors aligning to the shear axis. Upon cessation of shear flow, the anisotropy is seen to relax away completely, over a time scale which is inversely proportional to the previously applied shear rate.

The rapid expansion of the TMT sector in the late 1990s and more recent growing regulatory and corporate focus on business continuity and security have raised the profile of data centres. Data centres offer a unique blend of occupational, physical and technological characteristics compared to conventional real estate assets. Limited trading and heterogeneity of data centres also causes higher levels of appraisal uncertainty. In practice, the application of conventional discounted cash flow approaches requires information about a wide range of inputs that is difficult to derive from limited market signals or estimate analytically. This paper outlines an approach that uses pricing signals from similar traded cash flows is proposed. Based upon ‘the law of one price’, the method draws upon the premise that two identical future cash flows must have the same value now. Given the difficulties of estimating exit values, an alternative is that the expected cash flows of data centre are analysed over the life cycle of the building, with corporate bond yields used to provide a proxy for the appropriate discount rates for lease income. Since liabilities are quite diverse, a number of proxies are suggested as discount and capitalisation rates including indexed-linked, fixed interest and zero-coupon bonds. Although there are rarely assets that have identical cash flows and some approximation is necessary, the level of appraiser subjectivity is dramatically reduced.
