Self-study of variations to task design offers a way of analysing how learning takes place. Over several years, variations were made to improve an assessment task completed by final-year teacher candidates in a primary mathematics teacher education subject. This article describes how alterations to a task informed on-going developments in self-study of one assessment task employed in an online subject. Analysis of my journal, notes from conversations with colleagues, teacher candidates’ work on the task and responses to online forums, and survey data inspired variations focused on better exploration of key concepts involved in the task, raising of focal awareness, developing a stronger professional eye in the students and the author, adaptations for multiple curriculum levels, and explorations of dual teacher–student perspectives. The overall challenge has been to support teacher candidates to learn to design effective open-ended tasks with a critical professional eye. Descriptions of the changes made to the task and the development of my own professional eye as a consequence of the application of self-study are included. Data show that variations to the task increased teacher candidates’ understanding of mathematics problem posing and generated pedagogical insights for task design.

Previous studies have focused on investigating CQ in face-to-face contexts but very few have assessed CQ in virtual, cross-cultural interactions. This study highlights the relevance of cultural intelligence (CQ) as an intercultural capability in cross-cultural communications that are virtual. This two-study research (study 1: n = 274; study 2: n = 223) conducted in call centers in the Philippines (a) assesses the generalizability of the four-factor CQ model (i.e., cognitive, metacognitive, motivational and behavioral CQ) as applied in the virtual context and (b) tests the relationship between CQ, personality dimensions (i.e., openness to experience and extraversion) and supervisor’s ratings of task performance. Study 1 results show that the structural validity of the four-factor CQ model was supported with minor issues in some ofthe items indicating the need to modify the CQ measure when utilized in the virtual context. Study 2 results show that CQ is positively and significantly related to openness to experience and extraversion. In addition, results show that CQ predicts task performance highlighting the importance of developing CQ among call center representatives and other working professionals who virtually engage and interact with clients and customers from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Performance is a crucial attribute for most software, making performance analysis an important software engineering task. The difficulty is that modern applications are challenging to analyse for performance. Many profiling techniques used in real-world software development struggle to provide useful results when applied to large-scale object-oriented applications. There is a substantial body of research into software performance generally but currently there exists no survey of this research that would help identify approaches useful for object-oriented software. To provide such a review we performed a systematic mapping study of empirical performance analysis approaches that are applicable to object-oriented software. Using keyword searches against leading software engineering research databases and manual searches of relevant venues we identified over 5,000 related articles published since January 2000. From these we systematically selected 253 applicable articles and categorised them according to ten facets that capture the intent, implementation and evaluation of the approaches. Our mapping study results allow us to highlight the main contributions of the existing literature and identify areas where there are interesting opportunities. We also find that, despite the research including approaches specifically aimed at object-oriented software, there are significant challenges in providing actionable feedback on the performance of large-scale object-oriented applications.

Prognosis, such as predicting mortality, is common in medicine. When confronted with small numbers of samples, as in rare medical conditions, the task is challenging. We propose a framework for classification with data with small numbers of samples. Conceptually, our solution is a hybrid of multi-task and transfer learning, employing data samples from source tasks as in transfer learning, but considering all tasks together as in multi-task learning. Each task is modelled jointly with other related tasks by directly augmenting the data from other tasks. The degree of augmentation depends on the task relatedness and is estimated directly from the data. We apply the model on three diverse real-world data sets (healthcare data, handwritten digit data and face data) and show that our method outperforms several state-of-the-art multi-task learning baselines. We extend the model for online multi-task learning where the model parameters are incrementally updated given new data or new tasks. The novelty of our method lies in offering a hybrid multi-task/transfer learning model to exploit sharing across tasks at the data-level and joint parameter learning.

Privacy restrictions of sensitive data repositories imply that the data analysis is performed in isolation at each data source. A prime example is the isolated nature of building prognosis models from hospital data and the associated challenge of dealing with small number of samples in risk classes (e.g. suicide) while doing so. Pooling knowledge from other hospitals, through multi-task learning, can alleviate this problem. However, if knowledge is to be shared unrestricted, privacy is breached. Addressing this, we propose a novel multi-task learning method that preserves privacy of data under the strong guarantees of differential privacy. Further, we develop a novel attribute-wise noise addition scheme that significantly lifts the utility of the proposed method. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with a synthetic and two real datasets.

Secure property rights are considered a key determinant of economic development. However, the evaluation of the causal effects of land titling is a difficult task. The Brazilian government through a program called "Papel Passado" has issued titles, since 2004, to over 85,000 families and has the goal to reach 750,000. Furthermore, another topic in Public Policy that is crucial to developing economies is income generation and child labor force participation. Particularly, in Brazil, about 5.4 million children and teenagers between 5 and 17 years old are still working. This thesis examines the direct impact of securing a property title on income and child labor force participation. In order to isolate the causal role of ownership security, this study uses a comparison between two close and very similar communities in the City of Osasco case (a town with 650,000 people in the São Paulo metropolitan area). One of them, Jardim Canaã, was fortunated to receive the titles in 2007, the other, Jardim DR, given fiscal constraints, only will be part of the program schedule in 2012, and for that reason became the control group. Also, this thesis also aims to test if there is any relationship between land title and happiness. The estimates suggest that titling results in a substantial decrease of child labor force participation, increase of income and happiness for the families that received the title compared to the others.

A temática da assimetria funcional inter-hemisférica e analisada, neste trabalho, através de uma revisão crítica da literatura concernente aos estudos clínicos e experimentais (realizados tanto com pacientes neurológicos quanto com indivíduos normais) que se mostraram mais significativos para a configuração atual deste campo do saber. Inicialmente são analisados os estudos efetuados com pacientes neurológicos lesados unilateralmente, que forneceram as primeiras evidências sobre uma organização assimétrica dos hemisférios cerebrais. Na medida em que tal assimetria refere-se principalmente aos processos cognitivos, focalizou-se esta análise nos estudos mais significativos realizados sobre os quadros de afasias, apraxias, agnosias e amnésias, diretamente relacionados à problemática da assimetria cerebral. Os estudos empregando a técnica de Wada e com pacientes comissurotomizados foram abordados a seguir procurando-se evidenciar o grande avanço que propiciaram nos conhecimentos concernentes à assimetria funcional inter-hemisférica, quer em termos da caracterização funcional de cada hemisfério cerebral (o que acabou por levar a substituição da problemática de dominância cerebral pela de assimetria funcional inter-hemisférica) quer em termos da mobilização de interesse por esta área da pesquisa neuropsicológica. No que concerne aos estudos com indivíduos normais, procurou-se enfatizar a progressão de um enfoque centrado nas caracterizações hemisféricas para um enfoque centrado na análi¬se dos requerimentos cognitivos de uma determinada tarefa, com o objetivo de avaliar a participação relativa dos hemisférios cerebrais nas tarefas complexas. As diferenças individuais quanto ao padrão de lateralização funcional foram particularmente examinadas em relação aos estudos vinculados a variáveis comportamentais facilmente observáveis tais como a preferência manipulatória e sua história familiar, a preferência ocular e o sexo, dando-se ênfase a estudos correlacionais entre aquela primeira variável e a lateralização para a linguagem, que têm tido maior suporte empírico. Os principais modelos emergentes na literatura sobre a atuação conjunta dos hemisférios cerebrais, tentando explicar sua din5mica, foram objeto de um tópico ulterior. Dentre os diversos modelos propostos considerou-se mais consistente o de Dimond e Beaumont (Beaumont, 1974) que propõe uma atuação mais integrada entre os hemisférios cerebrais, embora não se revele totalmente satisfatório. Análises de questões filogenética, ontogenética e referentes aos diferentes processamentos cognitivos requeridos em tarefas complexas foram efetuadas já que constituem grande foco de interesse na literatura atual concernente à assimetria funcional inter-hemisférica.

Although research on Implicit Leadership Theories (ILT) has put great effort on determining what attributes define a leader prototype, little attention has been given to understanding the relative importance of each of these attributes in the categorization process by followers. Knowing that recognition-based leadership perceptions are the result of the match between followers’ ILTs and the perceived attributes in their actual leaders, understanding how specific prototypical leader attributes impact this impression formation process is particularly relevant. In this study, we draw upon socio-cognitive theories to explore how followers cognitively process the information about a leader’s attributes. By using Conjoint Analysis (CA), a technique that allows us to measure an individual’s trade-offs when making choices about multi-attributed options, we conducted a series of 4 studies with a total of 879 participants. Our results demonstrate that attributes’ importance for individuals’ leadership perceptions formation is rather heterogeneous, and that some attributes can enhance or spoil the importance of other prototypical attributes. Finally, by manipulating the leadership domain, we show that the weighting pattern of attributes is context dependent, as suggested by the connectionist approach to leadership categorization. Our findings also demonstrate that Conjoint Analysis can be a valuable tool for ILT research.

The infl uence of students’ sociocultural background on academic achievement is a well established fact. Research also points out that sociocultural background is related to students’ cognitive abilities and these have an effect on their academic achievement. However, the mediator role of cognitive abilities on the relationship between sociocultural background and academic achievement is less well known. A structural equation model that represents these relationships was tested in a sample (N= 728) of Portuguese junior high school students. Multigroup analysis of the model showed the importance of the cognitive ability mediation effect between sociocultural background and academic achievement in the 7th and 9th grades, but not in the 8th grade. This difference may be the result of the academic transition experienced in the 7th and 9th grades in the Portuguese educational system, which requires parents’ higher involvement in school.

Early psychiatry investigated dreams to understand psychopathologies. Contemporary psychiatry, which neglects dreams, has been criticized for lack of objectivity. In search of quantitative insight into the structure of psychotic speech, we investigated speech graph attributes (SGA) in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder type I, and non-psychotic controls as they reported waking and dream contents. Schizophrenic subjects spoke with reduced connectivity, in tight correlation with negative and cognitive symptoms measured by standard psychometric scales. Bipolar and control subjects were undistinguishable by waking reports, but in dream reports bipolar subjects showed significantly less connectivity. Dream-related SGA outperformed psychometric scores or waking-related data for group sorting. Altogether, the results indicate that online and offline processing, the two most fundamental modes of brain operation, produce nearly opposite effects on recollections: While dreaming exposes differences in the mnemonic records across individuals, waking dampens distinctions. The results also demonstrate the feasibility of the differential diagnosis of psychosis based on the analysis of dream graphs, pointing to a fast, low-cost and language-invariant tool for psychiatric diagnosis and the objective search for biomarkers. The Freudian notion that ‘‘dreams are the royal road to the unconscious’’ is clinically useful, after all.
