Samples of recent to Miocene fish and marine mammal bones from the bottom of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and Miocene Maikop deposits (Transcaspian region) are studied by X-ray diffraction technique combined with chemical and energy-dispersive analyses. Changes of lattice parameters and chemical composition of bioapatite during fossilization and diagenesis suggest that development of skeletal apatite proceeds from dahllite-type hydroxyapatite to francolite-type carbonate-fluorapatite. It is assumed that jump-type transition from dahllite to francolite during initial fossilization reflects replacement of biogeochemical reactions in living organisms, which are subject to nonlinear laws of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, by physicochemical processes according to the linear equilibrium thermodynamics.

Complex geological-geochemical studies of water column and bottom sediments were carried out during Cruise 49 of R/V "Dmitry Mendeleev" in the Kara Sea shelf zone along the Obskaya Guba (Ob River estuary) from the Pur River and Taz River mouths to 76°N. Carbon-14 concentrations in organic matter from bottom sediments were determined at 5 stations. Constant initial 14C concentration model was used to determine sedimentation rates that were taken as a basis for calculating ages of sediment cores and their separate parts and for inferring location of a depocenter, i.e. a region of maximal discharge of fine-dispersed fraction of suspended matter of river run-off. Sedimentation rate in the depocenter is 170 cm/ka. Southward moves of the depocenter were recorded for periods of sea-level rises 2 and 5 thousand years ago. Bottom sediments in the depocenter contain 45% of organic matter primary produced in the Obskaya Guba. This organic matter is an energetic basis for bottom fauna life. About 55% of organic matter comes with river run-off.

New data obtained in a shipboard laboratory are used to illustrate effect exerted by lithology of enclosing rock and by early diagenesis on residu¬al organic carbon content of Holocene deposits on the northwestern Bering Sea shelf. Loss of organic carbon is found to total 8-12% in the upper 10-15 cm of sediments and about 22% in the upper 1 m that agrees with data obtained for other areas by independent methods.

During an expedition aboard R/V Pavel Gordienko (September, 2002) investigations in the Sea of Japan areas, where radioactive wastes were disposed by the former Soviet Union, were carried out in order to assess present level of radioactive contamination of marine environment. Concentration of I37Cs, radioecologically one of the most important radionuclides, in near-bottom sea water and bottom sediments were measured to be low, 2.8-17.2 Bq/m**3 and 3.2-27.2 Bq/kg dry weight, respectively, that did not differ significantly from levels elsewhere in the northwest Pacific Ocean arising from global fallout. Results of measurements were compared with results of the Joint Japanese- Korean -Russian expedition to the Sea of Japan in 1994.

Macrobenthic associations were investigated at 29 sampling stations with a semi-quantitative Agassiz trawl, ranging from the South Patagonian Icefield to the Straits of Magellan in the South Chilean fjord system. A total of 1,895 individuals belonging to 131 species were collected. 19 species belong to colonial organisms, mainly Bryozoa (17 species) and Octocorallia (2 species). The phylum Echinodermata was the most diverse in species number (47 species), with asteroids (25 species) and ophiuroids (13 species) being the best represented within this taxon. Polychaeta was the second dominant group in terms of species richness (46 species). Multidimensional scaling ordination (MDS) separated two station groups, one related to fjords and channels off the South Patagonian Icefield and the second one to stations surrounding the Straits of Magellan. 45 species account for 90% of the dissimilarity between these two groups. These differences can mainly be explained by the influence of local environmental conditions determined by processes closely related to the pres- ence/absence of glaciers. Abiotic parameters such as water depth, type of sediment and chemical features of the superficial sediment were not correlated with the numbers of individuals caught by the Agassiz trawl in each group of sampling stations.

Sedimentation rates (SR) for metalliferous and ore sediments containing ore material in 15 depressions of the Red Sea rift zone are discussed. SR for normal sediments was ca. 3.2 cm/ka in the second half of Holocene, 14.3 cm/ka yrs in the first half of Holocene, and 21.3 cm/ka in Late Würmian. Accumulation of metalliferous and ore sediments requires considerable accumulation of hydrothermal matter. Ore sediments have been found primarily in the Atlantis II and Chain Deeps; average sedimentation rate in these depressions is 90.0 cm/ka. In other depressions geothermal activity during considered time intervals was lower, and ore material occurs as admixture or in layers.

The results of studying hydrocarbons during the flood in May 2005 are discussed. The concentration of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are shown to match their concentrations in water areas with steady input of pollutants. Weathered oil and pyrogenic compounds dominated in their composition. The geochemical barrier the Northern Dvina River-Dvina Gulf is shown to become a filter during floods and prevents pollutants from penetrating into the White Sea.

The mouth area of the North (Severnaya) Dvina River is characterized by a high concentrations of methane in water (from 1.0 to 165.4 µl/l) and bottom sediments (from 14 to 65000 µl/kg), being quite comparable to productive mouth areas of rivers from the temperate zone. Maximum methane concentrations in water and sediments were registered in the delta in segments of channels and branches with low rates of tidal and runoff currents, where domestic and industrial wastewaters are supplied. In the riverine and marine water mixing zone with its upper boundary, locating far into the delta and moving depending on a phase of the tidal cycle, decrease of methane concentration with salinity increase was observed. The prevailing role in formation of the methane concentration level in water of the mouth area pertains to bottom sediments, which is indicated by close correlation between gas concentrations in these two media. Existence of periodicity in variations of methane concentration in river water downstream caused by tidal effects was found.

The Ontong Java Plateau in the western equatorial Pacific contains a deposition record of biserial planktonic foraminifers concentrated in the Paleogene, in which frequencies up to 67% of the planktonic foraminifers are reported, and in the late Neogene, in which a maximum frequency of 48% is reported. Biserial planktonic foraminifers are rare or absent in the latest Oligocene and early Miocene, an interval characterized by warm bottom water and low temperature gradients. These conditions supported a surface assemblage rather than the biserial planktonic foraminifers, whose Neogene species inhabited the oxygen minimum at intermediate depths in the upper water column. Biserial planktonic foraminifers tend to be of high frequency during high sea stands and low frequency during low sea level, presumably in response to the strengthening or weakening of the oxygen minimum. Species extinction and evolution events occur during low sea stands in the Neogene and sometimes correspond to strong reflection horizons of the plateau's seismic stratigraphy. The biserial species are useful biostratigraphic indexes in the plateau section. The last occurrence (LO) of Streptochilus martini corresponds with the Eocene/Oligocene boundary; S. subglobigerum without Neogloboquadrina acostaensis indicates Zone N15; S. latum occurs from the middle of Zone N16 to near the top of Zone N17; S. globigerum ranges from near the top of Zone N17 to the middle of Zone N19/N20; and the S. globulosum continuous range begins just before the first left-to-right coiling change of Pulleniatina, but the species becomes rare in the Pleistocene section.

Results of study of bottom sediments near Iceland and on the Jan Mayen Island are reported. It was found that in recent sediments chemical elements are mainly associated with pyro- and volcanoclastics. In some areas adjusted to deep-seated faults ancient iron-manganese crusts and sediments occur. They are rich in Ni, Co, V, Cu, Mo, Cd and other elements associated with endogenic matter.

Results of direct geological and geochemical observations of the modern Rainbow hydrothermal field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36°14'N; 33°54'W) carried out from the deep-sea manned Mir submersibles during Cruises 41 and 42 of the R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh in 1998-1999 and data of laboratory studies of collected samples are under consideration in the paper. The field lacks neovolcanic rocks and the axial part of the rift is filled in with a serpentinite protrusion. In this field there occur metalliferous sediments, as well as active and relict sulfide edifices composed of sulfide minerals; pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, isocubanite, sphalerite, marcasite, pyrite, bornite, chalcosine, digenite, magnetite, anhydrite, rare troilite, wurtzite, millerite, and pentlandite have been determined. Sulfide ores are characterized by concentric-zoned textures. During in situ measurements during 35 minutes temperature of hydrothermal fluids was varying within a range from 250 to 350°C. Calculated chemical and isotopic composition of hydrothermal fluid shows elevated concentrations of Cl, Ni, Co, CH4, and H2. Values of d34S of H2S range from +2.4 to +3.1 per mil, of d13C of CH4 from -15.2 to -11.2 per mil, and d13C of CO2 from +1.0 to -4.0 per mil. Fluid inclusions are homogenized at temperatures from 140 to 360°C, whereas salinity of the fluid varies from 4.2 to 8.5 wt %. d34S values of sulfides range from +1.3 to +12.5 per mil. 3He/4He ratio in mineral-forming fluid contained in the fluid inclusions from sulfides of the Rainbow field varies from 0.00000374 to 0.0000101. It is shown that hydrothermal activity in the area continues approximately during 100 ka. It is assumed that the fluid and sulfide edifices contain components from the upper mantle. A hypothesis of phase separation of a supercritical fluid that results in formation of brines is proposed. Hydrothermal activity is related to the tectonic, not volcanic, phase of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge evolution.
