Ab initio calculations at the HF/6-31+G* level on [Ph2B-OH2](+) show that in the gas phase the structure with the proton attached to an ipso C is lower in energy than the one with the proton on the oxygen atom by 8.40 kcal mol(-1). The transition states and reaction paths for intramolecular proton transfer in [Ph2B-OH2](+) have also been studied.
Synergetic effects of the Cu/Pt{110} surface alloy: enhanced reactivity of water and carbon monoxide
Resumo:
We have used synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with ab initio density functional theory calculations to investigate the characteristics of water and CO adsorption on the bimetallic Cu/Pt{110}-(2 x 1) surface at a Cu coverage near 0.5 ML. Cu fills the troughs of the reconstructed clean surface forming nanowires, which are stable up to 830 K. Their presence dramatically influences the adsorption of water and CO. Water adsorption changes from intact to partially dissociated while the desorption temperature of CO on this surface increases by up to 27 K with respect to the clean Pt{110} surface. Ab initio calculations and experimental valence band spectra reveal that the Cu 3d-band is narrowed and shifted upward with respect to bulk Cu surfaces. This and electron donation to surface Pt atoms cause the increase in the bond strength between CO and the Pt surface atoms. The pathway for water dissociation occurs via Cu surface atoms. The heat of adsorption of water bonding to Cu surface atoms was calculated to be 0.82 eV, which is significantly higher than on the clean Pt{110} surface; the activation energy for partial dissociation is 0.53 eV (not corrected for zero point energy).

The gas phase reactions Of SiCl4 and Si2Cl6 With CH3OH and C2H5OH have been investigated using both mass spectrometry and matrix isolation techniques. SiCl4 reacts with both CH3OH and C2H5OH upon mixing of the vapours for times in excess of 3 h to generate the HCl-elimination products SiCl3OR (R = CH3 or C2H5). The identity of these products is confirmed by deuteration experiments and by ab initio calculations at the HF/6-31G(d) level. Further products are generated when the mixture is passed through a tube heated to 750degreesC. Si2Cl6 reacts with CH3OH and C2H5OH via a different mechanism in which the Si-Si bond is cleaved to yield SiCl3OR and HCl. Other products of the type SiCl4-n(OCH3)(n) are tentatively identified by a combination of mass spectrometric and matrix isolation measurements. These latter products indicate further replacement of Cl atoms by OR groups as a result of reaction of CH3OH or C2H5OH with the initial product.

The thermal route to dichlorosilylene by pyrolysis Of Si2Cl6 has been investigated using both mass spectrometry and matrix isolation techniques. The formation Of SiCl2 in the gas phase was confirmed by employing a known "trapping" agent, namely buta-1,3-diene, which gave the product 1, 2-dichloro-1-silacyclopent-3 -ene. Dichlorosilylene was then reacted with N2O and NO. The observed products in the mass spectrum from the N2O reaction were SiCl2O and its polymers and N-2. On reacting SiCl2 with NO, SiCl2O and its polymers, Cl-2 and N2O were all observed. Infrared spectra of argon matrices supported these findings from mass spectrometry. A mechanism is proposed for this reaction based on these observations involving the intermediacy of cyclo-Cl2SiO2 and is supported by ab initio calculations at the MP2 and G3 levels. The reaction between SiCl2 and O-2 has also been investigated. The products seen in this case were SiCl2O and Cl-2. Ab initio calculations again suggest that cyclo-Cl2SiO2 is involved, and a chain mechanism seems the most likely route to Cl-2 formation. The calculations lead to DeltaH(f)degrees (SiO2,g) = -276 +/- 4- 6 kJ mol(-1).

We have favoured the variational (secular equation) method for the determination of the (ro-) vibrational energy levels of polyatomic molecules. We use predominantly the Watson Hamiltonian in normal coordinates and an associated given potential in the variational code 'Multimode'. The dominant cost is the construction and diagonalization of matrices of ever-increasing size. Here we address this problem, using pertubation theory to select dominant expansion terms within the Davidson-Liu iterative diagonalization method. Our chosen example is the twelve-mode molecule methanol, for which we have an ab initio representation of the potential which includes the internal rotational motion of the OH group relative to CH3. Our new algorithm allows us to obtain converged energy levels for matrices of dimensions in excess of 100 000.

The vibrational-rotational energy levels of aluminum monohydroxide in its electronic ground state, (A) over tilde (1)A' AlOH, have been predicted using the variational method. The potential energy surface of the (X) over tilde (1)A' ground state of AlOH was determined employing the ab initio coupled cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)] and the correlation-consistent polarized valence quadruple zeta (cc-pVQZ) basis set. Low-lying J= 0 and J= 1 vibrational levels are reported. These are analyzed in terms of the quasilinearity of the molecule. Coriolis effects are shown to be significant. We hope that our predictions will be of value in the future when assigning rovibrational transitions in spectroscopic studies. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Intrinsically chiral metal and mineral surfaces show enantioselective behaviour without modifiers. Examples are artificial high-Miller-index surfaces of metal single crystals with cubic bulk lattice symmetry, which have no mirror planes and are therefore chiral, or surfaces of naturally occurring crystallites of some common minerals, such as alpha-quartz or calcite. Recent findings with regards to the surface geometry, reactivity and thermal stability of intrinsically chiral surfaces are discussed. A number of enantioselective effects have been reported in connection with the adsorption of small chiral molecules (e.g. alanine, cysteine) on intrinsically chiral surfaces under well-defined conditions. From a combination of experimental surface science techniques and theoretical ab initio model calculations it emerges that these effects are due to a combination of attractive and repulsive adsorbate-substrate and inter-adsorbate interactions.

A double minimum six-dimensional Potential energy surface (PES) is determined in symmetry coordinates for the most stable rhombic (D-2h) B-4 isomer in its (1)A(g) electronic ground state by fitting to energies calculated ab initio. The PES exhibits a barrier to the D-4h square structure of 255 cm(-1). The vibrational levels (J=0) are calculated variationally using an approach which involves the Watson kinetic energy operator expressed in normal coordinates. The pattern of about 65 vibrational levels up to 1600 cm-1 for all stable isotopomers is analyzed. Analogous to the inversion in ammonia-like molecules, the rhombus rearrangements lead to splittings of the vibrational levels. In B-4 it is the B-1g (D-4h mode which distorts the square molecule to its planar rhombic form. The anharmonic fundamental vibrational transitions of B-11(4) are calculated to be (splittings in parentheses): G(O) = 2352(22) cm(-1), v(1)(A(1g)) - 1136(24) cm(-1,) v(2)(B-1g)=209(144) cm(-1) v(3)(B-2g)=1198(19)cm(-1), v(4)(B-2u) = 271(24) cm(-1), and v(5) (E-u) = 1030( 166) cm(-1) (D-4h notation). Their variations in all stable isotoporners were investigated. Due to the presence of strong anharmonic resonances between the B-1g in-plane distortion and the B-2u, out-of-plane bending modes. the hiaher overtones and combination levels are difficult to assign unequivocally. Inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy has been used to observe and characterise hydrogen on the carbon component of a Pt/C catalyst. INS provides the complete vibration spectrum of coronene, regarded as a molecular model of a graphite layer. The vibrational modes are assigned with the aid of ab initio density functional theory calculations and the INS spectra by the a-CLIMAX program. A spectrum for which the H modes of coronene have been computationally suppressed, a carbon-only coronene spectrum, is a better representation of the spectrum of a graphite layer than is coronene itself. Dihydrogen dosing of a Pt/C catalyst caused amplification of the surface modes of carbon, an effect described as H riding on carbon. From the enhancement of the low energy carbon modes (100-600 cm(-1)) it is concluded that spillover hydrogen becomes attached to dangling bonds at the edges of graphitic regions of the carbon support. A full dimensional, ab initio-based semiglobal potential energy surface for C2H3+ is reported. The ab initio electronic energies for this molecule are calculated using the spin-restricted, coupled cluster method restricted to single and double excitations with triples corrections [RCCSD(T)]. The RCCSD(T) method is used with the correlation-consistent polarized valence triple-zeta basis augmented with diffuse functions (aug-cc-pVTZ). The ab initio potential energy surface is represented by a many-body (cluster) expansion, each term of which uses functions that are fully invariant under permutations of like nuclei. The fitted potential energy surface is validated by comparing normal mode frequencies at the global minimum and secondary minimum with previous and new direct ab initio frequencies. The potential surface is used in vibrational analysis using the "single-reference" and "reaction-path" versions of the code MULTIMODE. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

The theory of dipole-allowed absorption intensities in triatomic molecules is presented for systems with three close-lying electronic states of doublet multiplicity. Its derivation is within the framework of a recently developed variational method [CARTER, S., HANDY, N. C., PUZZARINI, C., TARRONI, R., and PALMIERI, P., 2000, Molec. Phys., 98,1967]. The method has been applied to the calculation of the infrared absorption spectrum of the C2H radical and its deuterated isotopomer for energies up to 10000 cm(-1) above the ground state, using highly accurate ab initio diabatic potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. The calculated spectra agree very well with those recorded experimentally in a neon matrix [FORNEY, D., JACOX, M. E., and THOMPSON, W. E., 1995, J. molee. Spectrosc., 170, 178] and assignments in the high energy region of the IR spectra are proposed for the first time.

We report variational calculations of rovibrational energies of CH4 using the code MULTIMODE and an ab initio force field of Schwenke and Partridge. The systematic convergence of the energies with respect to the level of mode coupling is presented. Converged vibrational energies calculated using the five-mode representation of the potential for zero total angular momentum are compared with previous, benchmark calculations based on Radau coordinates using this force field for zero total angular momentum and for J = 1. Very good agreement with the previous benchmark calculations is found. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Core-level photoelectron spectra, in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations, confirm that the stable wetting layer of water on Ru{0001} contains O-H and H2O in roughly 3:5 proportion, for OHx coverages between 0.25 and 0.7 ML, and T<170 K. Proton disorder explains why the wetting structure looks to low energy electron diffraction (LEED) to be an ordered p(root3xroot3)R30degrees adlayer, even though approximate to3/8 of its molecules are dissociated. Complete dissociation to atomic oxygen starts near 190 K. Low photon flux in the synchrotron experiments ensured that the diagnosis of the nature of the wetting structure quantified by LEED is free of beam-induced damage.

A new surface-crossing algorithm suitable for describing bond-breaking and bond-forming processes in molecular dynamics simulations is presented. The method is formulated for two intersecting potential energy manifolds which dissociate to different adiabatic states. During simulations, crossings are detected by monitoring an energy criterion. If fulfilled, the two manifolds are mixed over a finite number of time steps, after which the system is propagated on the second adiabat and the crossing is carried out with probability one. The algorithm is extensively tested (almost 0.5 mu s of total simulation time) for the rebinding of NO to myoglobin. The unbound surface ((FeNO)-N-...) is represented using a standard force field, whereas the bound surface (Fe-NO) is described by an ab initio potential energy surface. The rebinding is found to be nonexponential in time, in agreement with experimental studies, and can be described using two time constants. Depending on the asymptotic energy separation between the manifolds, the short rebinding timescale is between 1 and 9 ps, whereas the longer timescale is about an order of magnitude larger. NO molecules which do not rebind within 1 ns are typically found in the Xenon-4 pocket, indicating the high affinity of NO to this region in the protein.

Ligands such as CO, O2, or NO are involved in the biological function of myoglobin. Here we investigate the energetics and dynamics of NO interacting with the Fe(II) heme group in native myoglobin using ab initio and molecular dynamics simulations. At the global minimum of the ab initio potential energy surface (PES), the binding energy of 23.4 kcal/mol and the Fe-NO structure compare well with the experimental results. Interestingly, the PES is found to exhibit two minima: There exists a metastable, linear Fe-O-N minimum in addition to the known, bent Fe-N-O global minimum conformation. Moreover, the T-shaped configuration is found to be a saddle point, in contrast to the corresponding minimum for NO interacting with Fe(III). To use the ab initio results for finite temperature molecular dynamics simulations, an analytical function was fitted to represent the Fe-NO interaction. The simulations show that the secondary minimum is dynamically stable up to 250 K and has a lifetime of several hundred picoseconds at 300 K. The difference in the topology of the heme-NO PES from that assumed previously (one deep, single Fe-NO minimum) suggests that it is important to use the full PES for a quantitative understanding of this system. Why the metastable state has not been observed in the many spectroscopic studies of myoglobin interacting with NO is discussed, and possible approaches to finding it are outlined.
