The Research Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery in Ireland (Department of Health and Children, 2003) was a response to the Commission on Nursing’s (Government of Ireland, 1998: p114) suggestion that a national strategy be developed to guide and support the emerging need for the professions of nursing and midwifery to develop a research base as a fundamental to practice. The Commission itself had found a dearth of published Irish nursing and midwifery research (Government of Ireland, 1998; Condell, 1998) due to a lack of policy direction and funding availability. The terms of reference given to the Committee by the Minister for Health in 1992 â?" to develop a national policy to promote breastfeeding â?" were broad, allowing the Committee itself on an examination of the issue, to decide what were the most important aspects on which to focus. At its first meeting the Committee agreed on the objectives of the policy. These objectives were to be pursued having due regard to the right of the mother to make an informed choice about how she wished to feed her infant and with care that no woman should be made to feel inadequate if she chosenot to breastfeed Download document here

The National Council for the Elderly was established in 1981 as the National Council for the Aged. The terms of reference of the Council are: To advise the Minister for Health on all aspects of ageing and the welfare of the elderly either on its own initiative or at the request of the Minister It is long established national policy to maintain the elderly in their own homes for as long as possible. The Years Ahead report of 1988 made specific recommendations as to how care in the community for the frail elderly could be organised. The recent strategy document from the Department of Health, Shaping a Healthier Future, has presented a target, that not less than 90 per cent of those over 75 years of age should live at home Download the Report here

This report has two main objectives. The first is to set out national and health board area population projections for Ireland in the period 1991-2011, with special reference to the elderly population. The second is to consider the implications of the predicted trends in the elderly population for health and social care services over the same period, taking account of official policy objectives and service norms for the health services. This Health Strategy points to the need for promoting healthy ageing in conjunction with the then National Council for Elderly – a goal which was re-iterated in the 1995 Health Promotion Strategy, in which older people were identified as a priority  population group with particular health promotion needs

Methicillin-resistant staphlococcus aureus – MRSA is the most significant antibiotic resistant bacteria found in our hospitals The first MRSA survey on the prevalence of MRSA in the South of Ireland was conducted in 1995 under the direction of the late Dr. Zachary Johnson. In 1998 the Eastern Health Board was financed to carry out a repeat study again under Dr. Johnsonâ?Ts direction. This repeat study was done on an all island basis and the findings from both parts of the island are presented jointly in this reportDownload the Report here
