Uniform platinum nanodendrites have been prepared at a water/oil interface by a facile catalyst-free method at room temperature. This is carried out by introducing NaBH4 into the platinum precursor solution in the presence of the second generation of carboxyl-cored dendrimer ([G-2]-CO2H dendrimer) and toluene to act as a protective agent and a linker, respectively. The average fractal dimension of 1.61 of the obtained platinum nanodendrites is calculated by analysing the transmission electron micrographs using the programs Fractal Dimension Version 1.1 and Fractal Dimension Calculator. Control experiments show that the fabrication of platinum nanodendrites can be operated with a wide parameter window, which undoubtedly raises the degree of control of the synthesis process. The potential application of such a nanostructure as a catalyst is investigated, and the results reveal that they show highly efficient catalytic properties for the typical redox reaction between hexacyanoferrate (III) and thiosulfate ions at 301 K.

A new carbon composite electrode material, based on dispersing glassy carbon (GC) microparticles into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived sol, is described in the present paper. The resulting glassy carbon ceramic composite electrodes (GCCEs) combine the electrochemical properties of GC with the advantages of composite electrodes, and thus offer high electrochemical reactivity, low background current and are easy to prepare, modify and renew. The new material has a low double-layer capacitance and a wide potential window. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicate significant difference in the structure of GCCE and carbon ceramic composite electrode (CCE). The electrochemical properties and advantages of GCCE should find broad utility in electroanalysis.

Investigation of a heterogeneous electron-transfer (ET) reaction at the water/1,2-dichloroethane interface employing a double-barrel micropipet technique is reported. The chosen system was the reaction between Fe(CN)(6)(3-) in the aqueous phase (W) and ferrocene in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE). According to the generation and the collection currents as well as collection efficiency, the ET-ion-transfer (IT) coupling process at such an interface and competing reactions with the organic supporting electrolyte in the organic phase can be studied. In addition, this technique has been found to be an efficient method to distinguish and measure the charge-transfer coupling reaction between two ions (IT-IT) processes occurring simultaneously at a liquid/liquid interface. On this basis, the formal Gibbs energies of transfer of some ions across the W/DCE interface, such as NO3-, NO2-, Cl-, COO-, TBA(+), IPAs+, Cs+, Rb+, K+, Na+, and Li+, for which their direct transfers are usually difficult to obtain because of the IT-IT coupling processes, were quantitatively evaluated.

Facilitated ion transfer reactions of 20 amino acids with di.benzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) at the water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/DCE) interfaces supported at the tips of micro- and nano-pipets were investigated systematically using cyclic voltammetry. It was found that there were only 10 amino acids, that is, Leu, Val, Ile, Phe, Trp, Met, Ala, Gly, Cys, Gln (in brief), whose protonated forms as cations can give well-defined facilitated ion transfer voltammograms within the potential window, and the reaction pathway was proven to be consistent with the transfer by interfacial complexation/dissociation (TIC/TID) mechanisms. The association constants of DB 18C6 with different amino acids in the DCE (beta(0)), and the kinetic parameters of reaction were evaluated based on the steady-state voltammetry of micro- or nano-pipets, respectively The experimental results demonstrated that the selectivity of complexation of protonated amino acid by DB18C6 compared with that of alkali metal cations was low, which can be attributed to the vicinal effect arising from steric hindrance introduced by their side group and the steric bulk effect by lipophilic stabilization.

The electrochemical behavior of pyridine distribution at the water/1,2-dichloroethane interface with variable phase volume ratios (r=V-0/V-W) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The system was composed of an aqueous droplet supported on a Ag/AgCl disk electrode covered with an organic solution or an organic droplet supported on a Ag/AgTPBCl disk electrode covered with an aqueous solution. In this way, a conventional three-electrode potentiostat can be used to study an ionizable compound transfer process at a liquid/liquid interface with a wide range of phase volume ratios (from 0.0004 to 1 and from 1 to 2500). Using this special cell we designed, only very small volumes of both phase were needed for r equal to unity, which is very useful for the investigation of the distribution of ionizable species at a biphasic system when the available amount of species is limited. The ionic partition diagrams were obtained for different phase volume ratios.

Two novel organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, (H(2)enMe)(4)(H3O)[Ni(enMe)(2)].[Na3Mo12O52P8(OH)(10)].5H(2)O (1) and (H(2)enMe)(4)(H3O)[Cu(enMe)(2)].[Na3Mo12O52P8(OH)(10)].5H(2)O (2) (enMe = 1,2-diaminopropane), have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, EPR, XPS, UV-Vis spectra and TG analyses. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that 1 and 2 are isostructural compounds. Both the compounds exhibit an unusual two-dimensional (2-D) window-like network consisting of one-dimensional (1-D) chains of sodium molybdenum phosphate anions connected by transition metal coordination complexes cations. Compound 1 and 2 represent the first 2-D molybdenum phosphate skeleton pillared by transition metal complex fragments.

A series of polyimides (PIs) based on 2,3,3',4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (2,3,3',4'-BTDA) and 3,3',4,4'-BTDA were prepared by the conventional two-step process. The properties of the 2,3,3',4'-BTDA based polyimides were compared with those of polyimides prepared from 3,3',4,4'-BTDA. It was found that PIs from 2,3,3,4'-BTDA have higher glass transition temperature and better solubility without sacrificing their thermal properties. Furthermore the theological properties of PMR-15 type polyimide resins based on 2,3,3',4'-BTDA showed lower melt viscosity and wider melt flow region (flow window) compared with those from 3,3',4,4'-BTDA. The structure-property relations resulted from isomerism were discussed.

An optical fiber bienzyme sensor based on the luminol chemiluminescent reaction was developed and demonstrated to be sensitive to glucose. Glucose oxidase (GOD) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were co-immobilized by microencapsulation in a sol-gel film derived from tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS). The calibration plots for glucose were established by the optical fiber glucose sensor fabricated by attaching the bienzyme silica gel onto the glass window of the fiber bundle. The linear range was 0.2-2 mmol/L and the detection limit was approximately 0.12 mmol/L. The relative standard deviation was 5.3% (n = 6). The proposed biosensor was applied to glucose assay in ofloxacin injection successfully.

In this paper, we describe a simple procedure to make agar-gel microelectrodes by filling micropipettes. These microelectrodes were used to study K+ transfer across the agar-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6), and the transfer of tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)). The results observed were similar to those obtained at micro-liquid \ liquid interfaces. The effect of various amounts of agar in the aqueous phase was optimized and 3% agar was chosen based on the potential window and solidification time. The different shapes of micro-agar-gel electrodes were prepared in a similar way. The fabricated agar-gel microelectrodes obey the classical micro-disk steady-state current equation, which is different from the behavior of a normal micropipette filled with aqueous solution without silanization. A numerical method to estimate temperature distribution during the cure of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK)-based composite is suggested. The effect of the temperature distribution on the selection of cure cycle is evaluated using a suggested alternation criterion. The effect of varying heating rate and thickness on the temperature distribution, viscosity distribution and distribution of the extent of cure reaction are discussed based on the combination of the here-established temperature distribution model and the previously established curing kinetics model and chemorheological model. It is found that, for a thin composite (<=10mm) and low heating rate (<=2.5K/min), the effect of temperature distribution on cure cycle and on the processing window for pressure application can be neglected. Low heating rate is of benefit to reduce the temperature gradient. The processing window for pressure application becomes narrower with increasing thicknesses of composite sheets. The validity of the temperature distribution model and the modified processing window is evaluated through the characterization of mechanical and physical properties of E-PEK-based composite fabricated according to different temperature distribution conditions.

The curing temperature, pressure, and curing time have significant influence on finished thermosetting composite products. The time of pressure application is one of the most important processing parameters in the manufacture of a thermosetting composite. The determination of the time of pressure application relies on analysis of the viscosity variation of the polymer, associated with curing temperature and curing time. To determine it, the influence of the time of pressure application on the physical properties of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK)-based continuous carbon fiber composite was studied. It was found that a stepwise temperature cure cycle is more suitable for manufacture of this composite. There are two viscosity valleys, in the case of the E-PEK system, associated with temperature during a stepwise cure cycle. The analysis on the effects of reinforcement fraction and defect content on the composite sheet quality indicates that the width-adjustable second viscosity valley provides a suitable pressing window. The viscosity, ranging from 400 to 1200 Pa . s at the second viscosity valley, is the optimal viscosity range for applying pressure to ensure appropriate resin flow during curing process, which enables one to get a finished composite with optimal fiber volume fraction and low void content. Epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) developed in this Institute is a candidate matrix resin for polymer composites as structural materials. Cure cycles for this reaction system were simulated according to the previously established processing model. It is found that for the E-PEK system, the curing process is best completed by a stepwise cure cycle comprising two isothermal processes at different temperatures, T-1 and T-2. The cure cycles over a wide range of processing parameters simulated, based on the established processing model, indicate that the processing window is width-adjustable. Analysis of the mechanical properties of the composite sheets showed that the simulated cure cycles are acceptable and reliable. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Blends of a liquid crystalline thermotropic copolyester (LCP70) and an amorphous phenolphthalein based poly(ether-ketone)(PEK-C) with two viscosities were prepared by melt blending. The blends' morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated by DSC, SEM, mechanical and rheological tests. It was observed that the optimum composition of the PEK-C/LCP70 blend was 10 wt% LCP for both mechanical and rheological properties. When the LCP content was less than 10%, the LCP phase existed as finely dispersed fibrous domains with a diameter of about 1 mu m in the matrix, and both tensile and flexural properties were improved. In contrast, when the LCP content reached 20% or more, the LCP domains coalesced to ellipsoidal particles with a diameter of about 5 mu m, and the mechanical properties decreased as a result. It is demonstrated that pure PEK-C with a high viscosity which was difficult to process by melt extrusion, could be extruded conveniently when 10% LCP70 was incorporated. It is emphasized that LCP not only can be used as a reinforcing phase but also an effective processing agent for engineering thermoplastics, especially for those with high viscosity and narrow processing window. Stable bilayer thin films of indium tin oxide (ITO) on CdS and CdS on ITO were formed for the window material of solar cells by chemical bath and sputtering methods. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies have shown that both the ITO and CdS films are continuous, homogeneous, with high compactness. Measurement of the CdS film thickness across the 2 x 4 cm(2) reveals the good uniformity of these films. Four-point probe measurements show that the resistivity of a CdS film on an ITO surface is much better than that of the single CdS film The thermal stability of an ITO/CdS bilayer, interfacial reaction and optical transmittance were investigated at different annealing temperatures and environments (air, vacuum and N-2 + H-2). The results showed that the ITO/CdS bilayer film is a good window material for the CuInSe2 and CdTe cells. It is a simple method using a small amount of the cadmium compound.

The electrochemical transfer behaviour of vanadium-containing heteropolytungstate anions [PW12-xVxO40]((3+r)-) (x = 1-4) across the water \nitrobenzene interface has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry with cyclic linear current scanning. The transfer of PW11V1O404-, HPW10V2O404-, H2PW10V2O403-, H3PW9V3O403- and H4PW8V4O(40)(3-) across the water \nitrobenzene interface can be observed within the potential window. The effects were observed of pH in the water phase on the transfer behaviour and the formation of vanadium-containing heteropolytungstate anions in solution. Heteropolytungstate anions become more stable due to their involving the vanadium atom. The degree of protonation and the dissociation constant of the trivalent vanadium-containing heteropolytungstate anion of protonation increase with increasing vanadium content. The transfer processes are diffusion-controlled The standard transfer potential, the standard Gibbs energy and the dissociation constant for vanadium-containing heteropolytungstate anions have been obtained and the transfer mechanisms are discussed.
