Most adaptive linearization circuits for the nonlinear amplifier have a feedback loop that returns the output signal oj'tne eunplifier to the lineurizer. The loop delay of the linearizer most be controlled precisely so that the convergence of the linearizer should be assured lot this Letter a delay control circuit is presented. It is a delay lock loop (ULL) with it modified early-lute gate and can he easily applied to a DSP implementation. The proposed DLL circuit is applied to an adaptive linearizer with the use of a polynomial predistorter, and the simulalion for a 16-QAM signal is performed. The simulation results show that the proposed DLL eliminates the delay between the reference input signal and the delayed feedback signal of the linearizing circuit perfectly, so that the predistorter polynomial coefficients converge into the optimum value and a high degree of linearization is achieved

In this thesis, the applications of the recurrence quantification analysis in metal cutting operation in a lathe, with specific objective to detect tool wear and chatter, are presented.This study is based on the discovery that process dynamics in a lathe is low dimensional chaotic. It implies that the machine dynamics is controllable using principles of chaos theory. This understanding is to revolutionize the feature extraction methodologies used in condition monitoring systems as conventional linear methods or models are incapable of capturing the critical and strange behaviors associated with the metal cutting process.As sensor based approaches provide an automated and cost effective way to monitor and control, an efficient feature extraction methodology based on nonlinear time series analysis is much more demanding. The task here is more complex when the information has to be deduced solely from sensor signals since traditional methods do not address the issue of how to treat noise present in real-world processes and its non-stationarity. In an effort to get over these two issues to the maximum possible, this thesis adopts the recurrence quantification analysis methodology in the study since this feature extraction technique is found to be robust against noise and stationarity in the signals.The work consists of two different sets of experiments in a lathe; set-I and set-2. The experiment, set-I, study the influence of tool wear on the RQA variables whereas the set-2 is carried out to identify the sensitive RQA variables to machine tool chatter followed by its validation in actual cutting. To obtain the bounds of the spectrum of the significant RQA variable values, in set-i, a fresh tool and a worn tool are used for cutting. The first part of the set-2 experiments uses a stepped shaft in order to create chatter at a known location. And the second part uses a conical section having a uniform taper along the axis for creating chatter to onset at some distance from the smaller end by gradually increasing the depth of cut while keeping the spindle speed and feed rate constant.The study concludes by revealing the dependence of certain RQA variables; percent determinism, percent recurrence and entropy, to tool wear and chatter unambiguously. The performances of the results establish this methodology to be viable for detection of tool wear and chatter in metal cutting operation in a lathe. The key reason is that the dynamics of the system under study have been nonlinear and the recurrence quantification analysis can characterize them adequately.This work establishes that principles and practice of machining can be considerably benefited and advanced from using nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory.

Occupational stress is becoming a major issue in both corporate and social agenda .In industrialized countries, there have been quite dramatic changes in the conditions at work, during the last decade ,caused by economic, social and technical development. As a consequence, the people today at work are exposed to high quantitative and qualitative demands as well as hard competition caused by global economy. A recent report says that ailments due to work related stress is likely to cost India’s exchequer around 72000 crores between 2009 and 2015. Though India is a fast developing country, it is yet to create facilities to mitigate the adverse effects of work stress, more over only little efforts have been made to assess the work related stress.In the absence of well defined standards to assess the work related stress in India, an attempt is made in this direction to develop the factors for the evaluation of work stress. Accordingly, with the help of existing literature and in consultation with the safety experts, seven factors for the evaluation of work stress is developed. An instrument ( Questionnaire) was developed using these seven factors for the evaluation of work stress .The validity , and unidimensionality of the questionnaire was ensured by confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability of the questionnaire was ensured before administration. While analyzing the relation ship between the variables, it is noted that no relationship exists between them, and hence the above factors are treated as independent factors/ variables for the purpose of research .Initially five profit making manufacturing industries, under public sector in the state of Kerala, were selected for the study. The influence of factors responsible for work stress is analyzed in these industries. These industries were classified in to two types, namely chemical and heavy engineering ,based on the product manufactured and work environment and the analysis is further carried out for these two categories.The variation of work stress with different age , designation and experience of the employees are analyzed by means of one-way ANOVA. Further three different type of modelling of work stress, namely factor modelling, structural equation modelling and multinomial logistic regression modelling was done to analyze the association of factors responsible for work stress. All these models are found equally good in predicting the work stress.The present study indicates that work stress exists among the employees in public sector industries in Kerala. Employees belonging to age group 40-45yrs and experience groups 15-20yrs had relatively higher work demand ,low job control, and low support at work. Low job control was noted among lower designation levels, particularly at the worker level in these industries. Hence the instrument developed using the seven factors namely demand, control, manager support, peer support, relationship, role and change can be effectively used for the evaluation of work stress in industries.

The present study consists of nine chapters including the introductory chapter. Chapter II makes a brief review of environmental literature and examines various measures adopted at the global level to protect the environment. The environmental problems often transgress national sovereignity and geographical boundaries. Therefore, attempts must be made at the national and international levels to protect the environment, the resources of which are the common property of mankind. The protection of the national environment from the ancient till the present forms the content of Chapter III. These chapters together provide a background to understand the issues analysed in the subsequent chapters. Carefully worked out theoretical framework is a pre-requisite for the successful study of a complex subject. Some of the theoretical issues of ‘environomics’ are examined in Chapter IV. The theoretical issues involved in estimating the costs and benefits of environmental protection constitute the theme of Chapter V. The state of environment in Eloor-Edayar Industrial belt andthe impact analysis of pollution of the area are discussed in Chapter VI and VII respectively. Chapter VIII makes the financial estimate of environmental protection of the project And finally, Chapter IX presents the findings of the study

Atmospheric surface boundary layer parameters vary anomalously in response to the occurrence of annular solar eclipse on 15th January 2010 over Cochin. It was the longest annular solar eclipse occurred over South India with high intensity. As it occurred during the noon hours, it is considered to be much more significant because of its effects in all the regions of atmosphere including ionosphere. Since the insolation is the main driving factor responsible for the anomalous changes occurred in the surface layer due to annular solar eclipse, occurred on 15th January 2010, that played very important role in understanding dynamics of the atmosphere during the eclipse period because of its coincidence with the noon time. The Sonic anemometer is able to give data of zonal, meridional and vertical wind as well as the air temperature at a temporal resolution of 1 s. Different surface boundary layer parameters and turbulent fluxes were computed by the application of eddy correlation technique using the high resolution station data. The surface boundary layer parameters that are computed using the sonic anemometer data during the period are momentum flux, sensible heat flux, turbulent kinetic energy, frictional velocity (u*), variance of temperature, variances of u, v and w wind. In order to compare the results, a control run has been done using the data of previous day as well as next day. It is noted that over the specified time period of annular solar eclipse, all the above stated surface boundary layer parameters vary anomalously when compared with the control run. From the observations we could note that momentum flux was 0.1 Nm 2 instead of the mean value 0.2 Nm-2 when there was eclipse. Sensible heat flux anomalously decreases to 50 Nm 2 instead of the mean value 200 Nm 2 at the time of solar eclipse. The turbulent kinetic energy decreases to 0.2 m2s 2 from the mean value 1 m2s 2. The frictional velocity value decreases to 0.05 ms 1 instead of the mean value 0.2 ms 1. The present study aimed at understanding the dynamics of surface layer in response to the annular solar eclipse over a tropical coastal station, occurred during the noon hours. The organic agricultural sector of Uganda is among the most developed in Africa in terms of its professional institutional network and high growth rates of number of certified farmers and land area. Smallholder farmers are certified organic through contract production for export companies using a group certification scheme (internal control system - ICS). The ICS is a viable and well-accepted tool to certify small-scale producers in developing countries all over the world. Difficulties in certification are still stated to be among the main constraints for Uganda’s organic sector development. Therefore, this paper reports a qualitative case study comprising 34 expert interviews in two organic fresh-produce export companies in central Uganda, aiming to explore the challenges which underlie organic certification with ICS. The study shows that farmers cannot be labelled as ‘organic by default’ but deliberately engage in organic production as a marketing strategy. The small quantities purchased by the organic companies lead to a difficult marketing situation for the farmers, causing production and infiltration risks on the farm level. These risks require increased control that challenges the companies organizationally. The risks and control needs are a reason to involve farmers in ICS procedures and innovatively adapt the ICS by means of a bypass around formal perspective restrictions. The paper discusses different perspectives on risks, risk control and certification.

In the tropics, a large number of smallholder farms contribute significantly to food security by raising pigs and poultry for domestic consumption and for sale on local markets. The high cost and, sometimes, the lack of availability of commercial protein supplements is one of the main limitations to efficient animal production by smallholders. Locally-grown forages and grain legumes offer ecological benefits such as nitrogen fixation, soil improvement, and erosion control which contribute to improve cropping efficiency. Besides these agronomical assets, they can be used as animal feeds in mixed farming systems. In this paper we review options to include locally-grown forages and grain legumes as alternative protein sources in the diets of pigs and poultry in order to reduce farmers’ dependence on externally-purchased protein concentrates. The potential nutritive value of a wide range of forages and grain legumes is presented and discussed. The influence of dietary fibre and plant secondary metabolites contents and their antinutritive consequences on feed intake, digestive processes and animal performances are considered according to the varying composition in those compounds of the different plant species and cultivars covered in this review. Finally, methods to overcome the antinutritive attributes of the plant secondary metabolites using heat, chemical or biological treatment are reviewed regarding their efficiency and their suitability in low input farming systems.

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird eine gemeinsame Optimierung der Hybrid-Betriebsstrategie und des Verhaltens des Verbrennungsmotors vorgestellt. Die Übernahme von den im Steuergerät verwendeten Funktionsmodulen in die Simulationsumgebung für Fahrzeuglängsdynamik stellt eine effiziente Applikationsmöglichkeit der Originalparametrierung dar. Gleichzeitig ist es notwendig, das Verhalten des Verbrennungsmotors derart nachzubilden, dass das stationäre und das dynamische Verhalten, inklusive aller relevanten Einflussmöglichkeiten, wiedergegeben werden kann. Das entwickelte Werkzeug zur Übertragung der in Ascet definierten Steurgerätefunktionen in die Simulink-Simulationsumgebung ermöglicht nicht nur die Simulation der relevanten Funktionsmodule, sondern es erfüllt auch weitere wichtige Eigenschaften. Eine erhöhte Flexibilität bezüglich der Daten- und Funktionsstandänderungen, sowie die Parametrierbarkeit der Funktionsmodule sind Verbesserungen die an dieser Stelle zu nennen sind. Bei der Modellierung des stationären Systemverhaltens des Verbrennungsmotors erfolgt der Einsatz von künstlichen neuronalen Netzen. Die Auswahl der optimalen Neuronenanzahl erfolgt durch die Betrachtung des SSE für die Trainings- und die Verifikationsdaten. Falls notwendig, wird zur Sicherstellung der angestrebten Modellqualität, das Interpolationsverhalten durch Hinzunahme von Gauß-Prozess-Modellen verbessert. Mit den Gauß-Prozess-Modellen werden hierbei zusätzliche Stützpunkte erzeugt und mit einer verminderten Priorität in die Modellierung eingebunden. Für die Modellierung des dynamischen Systemverhaltens werden lineare Übertragungsfunktionen verwendet. Bei der Minimierung der Abweichung zwischen dem Modellausgang und den Messergebnissen wird zusätzlich zum SSE das 2σ-Intervall der relativen Fehlerverteilung betrachtet. Die Implementierung der Steuergerätefunktionsmodule und der erstellten Steller-Sensor-Streckenmodelle in der Simulationsumgebung für Fahrzeuglängsdynamik führt zum Anstieg der Simulationszeit und einer Vergrößerung des Parameterraums. Das aus Regelungstechnik bekannte Verfahren der Gütevektoroptimierung trägt entscheidend zu einer systematischen Betrachtung und Optimierung der Zielgrößen bei. Das Ergebnis des Verfahrens ist durch das Optimum der Paretofront der einzelnen Entwurfsspezifikationen gekennzeichnet. Die steigenden Simulationszeiten benachteiligen Minimumsuchverfahren, die eine Vielzahl an Iterationen benötigen. Um die Verwendung einer Zufallsvariablen, die maßgeblich zur Steigerung der Iterationanzahl beiträgt, zu vermeiden und gleichzeitig eine Globalisierung der Suche im Parameterraum zu ermöglichen wird die entwickelte Methode DelaunaySearch eingesetzt. Im Gegensatz zu den bekannten Algorithmen, wie die Partikelschwarmoptimierung oder die evolutionären Algorithmen, setzt die neu entwickelte Methode bei der Suche nach dem Minimum einer Kostenfunktion auf eine systematische Analyse der durchgeführten Simulationsergebnisse. Mit Hilfe der bei der Analyse gewonnenen Informationen werden Bereiche mit den bestmöglichen Voraussetzungen für ein Minimum identifiziert. Somit verzichtet das iterative Verfahren bei der Bestimmung des nächsten Iterationsschrittes auf die Verwendung einer Zufallsvariable. Als Ergebnis der Berechnungen steht ein gut gewählter Startwert für eine lokale Optimierung zur Verfügung. Aufbauend auf der Simulation der Fahrzeuglängsdynamik, der Steuergerätefunktionen und der Steller-Sensor-Streckenmodelle in einer Simulationsumgebung wird die Hybrid-Betriebsstrategie gemeinsam mit der Steuerung des Verbrennungsmotors optimiert. Mit der Entwicklung und Implementierung einer neuen Funktion wird weiterhin die Verbindung zwischen der Betriebsstrategie und der Motorsteuerung erweitert. Die vorgestellten Werkzeuge ermöglichten hierbei nicht nur einen Test der neuen Funktionalitäten, sondern auch eine Abschätzung der Verbesserungspotentiale beim Verbrauch und Abgasemissionen. Insgesamt konnte eine effiziente Testumgebung für eine gemeinsame Optimierung der Betriebsstrategie und des Verbrennungsmotorverhaltens eines Hybridfahrzeugs realisiert werden.

Creation of lifecycle value - a balance of performance with cost and other attributes - represents a challenge for the development of aerospace products in the twenty-first century. This paper examines the concept of lifecycle value that stems from existing approaches of value management and analysis, lifecycle costing, and systems engineering. To ascertain common characteristics of lifecycle value creation, case studies were done for four aircraft programs: F/A- 18E/F, JAS 39 Gripen, F-16C/D, and B-777. A lifecycle value creation framework is introduced, comprised of three phases: value identification, value proposition, value delivery. Based upon observed practices in the four case studies, six value creation attributes were identified. Capability maturity models for the six attributes and three value creation phases are presented. The resulting framework represents a starting point for programs seeking to create lifecycle value for aerospace products.

This paper explores the concept of Value Stream Analysis and Mapping (VSA/M) as applied to Product Development (PD) efforts. Value Stream Analysis and Mapping is a method of business process improvement. The application of VSA/M began in the manufacturing community. PD efforts provide a different setting for the use of VSA/M. Site visits were made to nine major U.S. aerospace organizations. Interviews, discussions, and participatory events were used to gather data on (1) the sophistication of the tools used in PD process improvement efforts, (2) the lean context of the use of the tools, and (3) success of the efforts. It was found that all three factors were strongly correlated, suggesting success depends on both good tools and lean context. Finally, a general VSA/M method for PD activities is proposed. The method uses modified process mapping tools to analyze and improve process.

We analyze a finite horizon, single product, periodic review model in which pricing and production/inventory decisions are made simultaneously. Demands in different periods are random variables that are independent of each other and their distributions depend on the product price. Pricing and ordering decisions are made at the beginning of each period and all shortages are backlogged. Ordering cost includes both a fixed cost and a variable cost proportional to the amount ordered. The objective is to find an inventory policy and a pricing strategy maximizing expected profit over the finite horizon. We show that when the demand model is additive, the profit-to-go functions are k-concave and hence an (s,S,p) policy is optimal. In such a policy, the period inventory is managed based on the classical (s,S) policy and price is determined based on the inventory position at the beginning of each period. For more general demand functions, i.e., multiplicative plus additive functions, we demonstrate that the profit-to-go function is not necessarily k-concave and an (s,S,p) policy is not necessarily optimal. We introduce a new concept, the symmetric k-concave functions and apply it to provide a characterization of the optimal policy.

We show that a stationary (s,S,p) policy is optimal for both the discounted and average profit models with general demand functions. In such a policy, the period inventory is managed based on the classical (s,S) policy and price is determined based on the inventory position at the beginning of each period.

“What is value in product development?” is the key question of this paper. The answer is critical to the creation of lean in product development. By knowing how much value is added by product development (PD) activities, decisions can be more rationally made about how to allocate resources, such as time and money. In order to apply the principles of Lean Thinking and remove waste from the product development system, value must be precisely defined. Unfortunately, value is a complex entity that is composed of many dimensions and has thus far eluded definition on a local level. For this reason, research has been initiated on “Measuring Value in Product Development.” This paper serves as an introduction to this research. It presents the current understanding of value in PD, the critical questions involved, and a specific research design to guide the development of a methodology for measuring value. Work in PD value currently focuses on either high-level perspectives on value, or detailed looks at the attributes that value might have locally in the PD process. Models that attempt to capture value in PD are reviewed. These methods, however, do not capture the depth necessary to allow for application. A methodology is needed to evaluate activities on a local level to determine the amount of value they add and their sensitivity with respect to performance, cost, time, and risk. Two conceptual tools are proposed. The first is a conceptual framework for value creation in PD, referred to here as the Value Creation Model. The second tool is the Value-Activity Map, which shows the relationships between specific activities and value attributes. These maps will allow a better understanding of the development of value in PD, will facilitate comparison of value development between separate projects, and will provide the information necessary to adapt process analysis tools (such as DSM) to consider value. The key questions that this research entails are: · What are the primary attributes of lifecycle value within PD? · How can one model the creation of value in a specific PD process? · Can a useful methodology be developed to quantify value in PD processes? · What are the tools necessary for application? · What PD metrics will be integrated with the necessary tools? The research milestones are: · Collection of value attributes and activities (September, 200) · Development of methodology of value-activity association (October, 2000) · Testing and refinement of the methodology (January, 2001) · Tool Development (March, 2001) · Present findings at July INCOSE conference (April, 2001) · Deliver thesis that captures a formalized methodology for defining value in PD (including LEM data sheets) (June, 2001) The research design aims for the development of two primary deliverables: a methodology to guide the incorporation of value, and a product development tool that will allow direct application.

El carcinoma Hepatocelular (HCC) representa la sexta causa más frecuente de cáncer, y la tercera causa de muerte relacionada con cáncer en el mundo con aproximadamente 600.000 muertes anuales. En el 70 % de los casos, este se desarrolla en presencia de una enfermedad crónica del hígado como la cirrosis u otras enfermedades inflamatorias, por lo que practicar métodos de tamizaje para su diagnóstico precoz, pudieran establecer un mejor pronóstico. El objetivo de este trabajo es diseñar una vía clínica capaz de homogenizar el proceso de tamizaje de HCC, soportando su realización con la realización de una evaluación económica de esta intervención. Se realiza una búsqueda sistemática de literatura y se propone una vía clínica para la vigilancia de HCC en Colombia. A esta propuesta se aplica una evaluación económica tipo costo-efectividad mediante un modelo de Markov de la intervención propuesta, comparando la aplicación de la vía clínica propuesta frente al manejo actual en 100 pacientes considerados con riesgo (cirrosis, portadores de HBV y/o portadores de HCV) con un horizonte de tiempo de 30 años analizando como desenlace los años de vida salvados (LYS) desde la perspectiva del tercero pagador para Colombia a precios de 2009. El análisis determina una disminución de la mortalidad en un 40%, y un valor ICER de US$ 1,438 por LYS, por lo cual se concluye que resulta costo efectivo la aplicación de esta propuesta de tamizaje. Es necesario realizar una prueba para la aplicación de la vía clínica.
