The authors describe a detailed investigation on tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) structures with tilted angles exceeding 45°. In contrast to the backward mode coupling mechanism of Bragg gratings with normal and small tilting structures, the ex-45° TFBGs facilitate the light coupling to the forward-propagating cladding modes. The authors have also theoretically and experimentally examined the mode coupling transition of TFBGs with small, medium, and large tilt angles. In particular, experiments are conducted to investigate the spectra and far-field distribution, as well as temperature, strain, and refractive-index sensitivities of ex-45° devices. It has been revealed that these ex-45° gratings exhibit ultralow thermal sensitivity. As in-fiber devices, they may be superior to conventional Bragg and long-period gratings when the low thermal cross sensitivity is required.

We propose the design of a novel ?-shaped fiber laser resonator and apply it to build a long-cavity normaldispersion mode-locked Er-fiber laser which features enhanced functionalities for management and optimization of pulsed lasing regimes. We report the generation of sub-nanosecond pulses with the energy of ~0.5 µJ at a kilohertz-scale repetition rate in an all-fiber system based on the new laser design. A combination of special design solutions in the laser, such as polarization instability compensation in the ultra-long arm of the resonator, intra-cavity spectral selection of radiation with a broadband fiber Bragg grating, and polarization selection by means of a tilted refractive index grating, ensures low amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and high stability of the laser system output parameters.

Direct quantile regression involves estimating a given quantile of a response variable as a function of input variables. We present a new framework for direct quantile regression where a Gaussian process model is learned, minimising the expected tilted loss function. The integration required in learning is not analytically tractable so to speed up the learning we employ the Expectation Propagation algorithm. We describe how this work relates to other quantile regression methods and apply the method on both synthetic and real data sets. The method is shown to be competitive with state of the art methods whilst allowing for the leverage of the full Gaussian process probabilistic framework.

Over the last twenty years, we have been continuously seeing R&D efforts and activities in developing optical fibre grating devices and technologies and exploring their applications for telecommunications, optical signal processing and smart sensing, and recently for medical care and biophotonics. In addition, we have also witnessed successful commercialisation of these R&Ds, especially in the area of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) based distributed sensor network systems and technologies for engineering structure monitoring in industrial sectors such as oil, energy and civil engineering. Despite countless published reports and papers and commercial realisation, we are still seeing significant and novel research activities in this area. This invited paper will give an overview on recent advances in fibre grating devices and their sensing applications with a focus on novel fibre gratings and their functions and grating structures in speciality fibres. The most recent developments in (i) femtosecond inscription for microfluidic/grating devices, (2) tilted grating based novel polarisation devices and (3) dual-peak long-period grating based DNA hybridisation sensors will be discussed.

We report an in-fiber polarizer implemented using a 45° tilted FBG. Polarization extinction ratio of 28dB at 1550nm and HMFW over 80nm has been demonstrated. When the un-polarized light passes this device, 99.5% of degree of polarization can be achieved.

We report an implementation of optical fibre sensors based on fibre Bragg gratings with excessively tilted (>45°) structures, showing distinctive polarisation characteristics, desirable low thermal-cross-sensitivity and enhanced responsivity to surrounding-medium-refractive-index.

Room temperature, tunable, external-cavity short-wavelength InAs/AlSb quantum cascade laser (QCL) is reported. Wavelength tuning of 85 nm for the spectral range between 3190 nm and 3275 nm has been achieved by rotating the diffraction grating forming the external cavity. To suppress lasing inside the QCL cavity, its ridge was tilted by 7° at the external cavity end. The optimal tilting angle of the laser ridge was chosen by careful consideration of the return losses of the TM-polarized waveguide mode from the diffraction grating in a quasi-Littrow configuration and the Fabry-Pérot feedback from the tilted laser facet. No antireflection coating was used. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

The surface chemistry of benzene and bromobenzene over Pt(111) has been studied by temperature-programmed XPS/MS and NEXAFS. Time-resolved XPS shows that benzene adopts a single chemically distinguishable environment during low-temperature adsorption within the monolayer, with a saturation coverage at θC6H6 = 0.2 ML. Around 20% of a benzene monolayer desorbs molecularly, while the remainder dehydrogenates to surface carbon. Bromobenzene likewise adsorbs molecularly at 90 K, giving rise to two C 1s environments at 284.4 and 285.3 eV corresponding to the C−H and C−Br functions, respectively. The saturation C6H5Br monolayer coverage is 0.11 ML. NEXAFS reveals that bromobenzene adopts a tilted geometry, with the ring plane at 60 ± 5° to the surface. Bromobenzene multilayers desorb at ∼180 K, with higher temperatures promoting competitive molecular desorption versus C−Br scission within the monolayer. Approximately 30% of a saturated bromobenzene monolayer either desorbs reversibly or as reactively formed hydrocarbons. Debromination yields a stable (phenyl) surface intermediate and atomic bromine at 300 K. Further heating results in desorption of reactively formed H2, C6H6, and HBr; however, there was no evidence for either biphenyl or Br2 formation. The strong promotion by NO of acetylene cyclotrimerisation to benzene on Pd{1 1 1} has been investigated by fast XPS, supported by LEED and Δφ data. Islands of NO act to compress co-existing islands of acetylene. The resulting increase in acetylene density dramatically lowers the nominal threshold acetylene coverage required for reaction. In addition, the threshold reaction temperature is reduced from 150 to <100 K, and increased lateral interactions within the organic domains promote formation of tilted benzene. Co-adsorption of NO with benzene itself accelerates the desorption of both tilted and flat-lying benzene at low temperatures. These factors act to increase the yield of reactively formed benzene to 100%, completely suppressing carbon deposition that would otherwise result from decomposition of reactant and product.

We have demonstrated a switchable dual wavelength fiber ring laser with a high degree of polarization output by using an intracavity 3-stage all fiber Lyot filter. The filter is formed by concatenating four 45° tilted fiber gratings separated by polarization maintaining fibers with a length ratio of 1:2:4 (20, 40, and 80 cm), giving a compact integrated configuration with reduced bandwidth. Switchable dual wavelength or single wavelength output at 1533.5 and 1563.3 nm has been achieved. The output lasing is considerably stable owing to the in-phase mode-selecting function of the multistage Lyot filter, and has a very high degree of polarization higher than 99.9%. © 1989-2012 IEEE.
