We investigated the effects of ramipril, an angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, on water intake by male Holtzman rats (250-300 g) with cannulae implanted into the lateral ventricle. Intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of ramipril (1 mu g/mu l) significantly reduced drinking in response to subcutaneous (sc) injection of isoprenaline (100 mu g/kg) from 8.49 +/- 0.69 to 2.96 +/- 0.36 ml/2 h, polyethyleneglycol (PEG) (30% w/v, 10 ml/kg) from 9.51 +/- 2.20 to 1.6 +/- 0.34 ml/2 h or water deprivation for 24 h from 12.61 +/- 0.83 to 5.10 +/- 1.37 ml/2 h. Ramipril had no effect on water intake induced by cellular dehydration produced by sc injection of hypertonic saline (2 M NaCl). These results are consistent with the hypothesis that ramipril acts as an ACE-blocking agent in the brain. The possibility that ramipril is transformed to ramiprilat, the active drug, by the brain is suggested.

Minidosimeters of L-alanine and 2-methylalanine (2MA) were prepared and tested as potential candidates for small radiation field dosimetry. To quantify the free radicals created by radiation a K-Band (24 GHz) EPR spectrometer was used. X-rays provided by a 6 MV clinical linear accelerator were used to irradiate the minidosimeters in the dose range of 0.5-30 Gy. The dose-response curves for both radiation sensitive materials displayed a good linear behavior in the dose range indicated with 2MA being more radiation sensitive than L-alanine. Moreover, 2MA showed a smaller LLD (lower limit detection) value. The proposed system minidosimeter/K-Band spectrometer was able to detect 10 Gy EPR spectra with good signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). The overall uncertainty indicates that this system shows a good performance for the detection of dose values of 20 Gy and above, which are dose values typically used in radiosurgery treatments. Bilateral common carotid occlusion (BCO) over a period of 60 s in conscious rats produces a biphasic presser response, consisting of an early (peak) and late (plateau) phase. In this study we investigated 1) the effects of lesions of the commissural nucleus of the solitary tract (commNTS) on the cardiovascular responses produced by BCO in conscious rats and 2) the autonomic and humoral mechanisms activated to produce the presser response to BCO in sham- and commNTS-lesioned rats. Both the peak and plateau of the presser response produced by BCO increased in commNTS-lesioned rats despite the impairment of chemoreflex responses induced by intravenous potassium cyanide. In sham rats sympathetic blockade with intravenous prazosin and metoprolol, but not vasopressin receptor blockade with the Manning compound, reduced both components of BCO. In commNTS-lesioned rats the sympathetic blockade or vasopressin receptor blockade reduced both components of BCO. The results showed 1) the sympathetic nervous system, but not vasopressin, is important for the presser response to BCO during 60 s in conscious sham rats; 2) in commNTS-lesioned rats, despite chemoreflex impairment, BCO produces an increased presser response dependent on sympathetic activity associated with vasopressin release; and 3) the increment in the presser response to BCO in commNTS-lesioned rats seems to depend only on vasopressin secretion.

An investigation was made to discover how the addition of Cr2O3 affects the microstructural heterogeneity and nonohmic features of the SnO2(Co-x, Mn1-x)O-based varistor system, with x varying from 0 to 1. The presence of Cr2O3 was found to strongly increase the nonohmic features when x = 1. However, the nonohmic features of the system decrease when x drops from 1 to 0, a behavior explained by the increase of the junction heterogeneity within the system's microstructure. accompanied by ail excess of precipitates at the triple point in the grain boundary region due to modified MnO sintering. The presence of these precipitates causes the leakage current to increase in response to the creation of ail ineffective barrier. The effect produced by heat-treating these systems in oxygen- and nitrogen-rich atmospheres suggests that, according to mechanisms previously discussed in the literature, Cr2O3 is more susceptible to oxygen, so that increasing the amount of oxygen in the grain boundary region may improve the system's nonohmic properties. There have been some responses of peanut roots to phosphorus. An experiment was carried out to study peanut root growth and distribution as related to P in the soil. The cultivars Tatu, Oira and Tup4 and the lines FCA 170 and FCA 265 were grown with or without P fertilization with 80 kg P2O5/ha, as triple superphosphate. The fertilizer was applied in the seed furrows. There was higher P contents in the 0-10 cm layer of the soil 36 days after P application. At 66 and 98 days after application, P contents of the soil were increased by fertilization down to 15 cm. There was no response of peanut roots to P fertilization. Oira showed the highest root lenght density and Tatu the lowert. There was a root concentration the first 15 cm of the soil. Oira with the largest root system showed the lowest P absorption, and Tatu, with the smallest root system absorbed as much P as the others.

Making diagnoses in oral pathology are often difficult and confusing in dental practice, especially for the lessexperienced dental student. One of the most promising areas in bioinformatics is computer-aided diagnosis, where a computer system is capable of imitating human reasoning ability and provides diagnoses with an accuracy approaching that of expert professionals. This type of system could be an alternative tool for assisting dental students to overcome the difficulties of the oral pathology learning process. This could allow students to define variables and information, important to improving the decision-making performance. However, no current open data management system has been integrated with an artificial intelligence system in a user-friendly environment. Such a system could also be used as an education tool to help students perform diagnoses. The aim of the present study was to develop and test an open case-based decisionsupport system. Methods: An open decision-support system based on Bayes' theorem connected to a relational database was developed using the C++ programming language. The software was tested in the computerisation of a surgical pathology service and in simulating the diagnosis of 43 known cases of oral bone disease. The simulation was performed after the system was initially filled with data from 401 cases of oral bone disease. Results: the system allowed the authors to construct and to manage a pathology database, and to simulate diagnoses using the variables from the database. Conclusion: Combining a relational database and an open decision-support system in the same user-friendly environment proved effective in simulating diagnoses based on information from an updated database.

Stress-induced vascular adaptive response in SHR was investigated, focusing on the endothelium. Noradrenaline responses were studied in intact and denuded aortas from 6-week-old (prehypertensive) and 14-week-old (hypertensive) SHR and age-matched Wistar rats submitted or not to acute stress (20-min swimming and I-h immobilization 25 min apart), preceded or not by chronic stress (2 sessions 2 days apart of 1-h day immobilization for 5-consecutive days). Stress did not alter the reactivity of denuded aorta. Moreover, no alteration in the EC50 values was observed after stress exposure. In intact aortas, acute stress-induced hyporeactivity to noradrenaline similar between strains at both age. Chronic stress potentiated this adaptive response in 6- and 14-week-old Wistar but not in 6-week-old SHR, and did not alter the reactivity of 14-week-old SHR. Maximum response (g) in intact aortas [6-week-old: Wistar 3.25 +/- 0.12, Wistar/acute 1.95 +/- 0.12*, Wistar/chronic 1.36 +/- 0.21*(+), SHR 1.75 +/- 0.11, SHR/acute 0.88 +/- 0.08*, SHR/chronic 0.85 +/- 0.05*; 14-week-old: Wistar 3.83 +/- 0.13, Wistar/acute 2.72 +/- 0.13*, Wistar/chronic 1.91 +/- 0.19*', SHR 4.03 +/- 0.17, SHR/acute 2.26 +/- 0.12*, SHR/chronic 4.10 +/- 0.23; inside the same strain: *P < 0.05 relate to non-stressed rat, (+)P < 0.05 related to acute stressed rat; n = 6-18]. Independent of age and strain, L-NAME and endothelium removal abolished the stress-induced aorta hyporeactivity. Conclusion: the vascular adaptive response to stress is impaired in SHR, independently of the hypertensive state. Moreover, this vascular adaptive response is characterized by endothelial nitric oxide-system hyperactivity in both strains. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This article addresses the establishment of integrated diagnostics and recommendation system (DRIS) standards for irrigated bean crops (Phaseolus vulgaris) and compares leaf concentrations and productivity in low- and high-productivity populations. The work was carried out in Santa Fe de Goias, Goias State, Brazil, in the agricultural years 1999/2000 and 2000/2001. For the nutritional diagnosis, leaf samples were collected, and leaf concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) were established in 100 commercial bean crops. A database was set up listing the leaf nutrient content and the respective productivities, subdivided into two subpopulations, high and low productivity, using a bean yield value of 3000 kg ha-1 to separate these subpopulations. Sufficiency values found in the high-productivity population matched only for the micronutrients B and Zn. The nutritional balance among the populations studied was coherent and was lower in the high-productivity population. The DRIS standards proposed for irrigated bean farming were efficient in evaluating the nutritional status of the crop areas studied. Calcium, Cu, and S were found to be the least available nutrients, indicating high response potential for the fertilizing using these nutrients.

This study describes a technical analysis of a four-phase line as a transmission system alternative. An analysis in the frequency and the time domains is performed to evaluate the electrical characteristics and the transient response of a generic four-phase system compared with those of a conventional three-phase transmission system. The technical features of this non-conventional system are discussed and reviewed based on the current literature. Thus, a new analysis of the four-phase system is presented that emphasises several technical characteristics that have not been discussed in previous studies.

This note deals whith the problem of extrema which may occur in the step-response of a stable linear system with real zeros and poles. Some simple sufficients conditions and necessary conditions are presented for analyses when zeros located between the dominant and fastest pole does not cause extrema in the step-response. These conditions require knowledge of the pole-zero configuration of the corresponding transfer-function.
