In this work we studied the structural and optical properties of lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) powders doped with Eu3+ ions. We have examined the different sites occupied by the rare earth ion through the correlation of the DRX data analyzed with the Rietveld method and some spectroscopic parameters derived from the Eu3+ luminescence. Adirect relation was established between the lattice parameters and the occupation fraction of Eu3+ in each LiTaO3 site. The occupation fraction was set as the relative population of Eu3+ ions for each site obtained by means of the intensity, baricenter, and the spontaneous emission coefficients of the D-5(0)-> F-7(0) transitions. We concluded that the unit cell parameter a presents the same behavior of the Eu3+ occupation fraction in Ta5+ sites as a function of the Eu3+ content in LiTaO3. The same was observed for the variation in Eu3+ occupation fraction in the Li+ site and the unit cell parameter c with the Eu3+ content. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics. The ZnO luminescent properties are strongly influenced by the preparation method and they are principally related to electronic and crystalline structures. This work reports about the correlation among luminescence properties of ZnO, obtained from zinc hydroxycarbonate, and crystalline lattice defects, microstrain, as function of thermal treatment. The crystallite size increase and the qualitative microstrain, obtained by Williamson-Hall plots, decrease as function of temperature. The evolution of electronic defects is analyzed by luminescence spectroscopy based on energy of the electronic transitions. From excitation spectrum, it is verified two bands around 377 nm and 405 nm attributed to the transitions between valence-conduction bands and valence band to interstitial zinc level, respectively. The emission spectra of sample treated at 600 degreesC shows large band at 670 nm. However, the green emission around 530 nm is observed for samples treated at 900 degreesC. The intensities of excitation and emission bands are associated with the increase of the electronic defects that depend on the strain lattice decrease. The lowest strain lattice results on the best green luminescent properties of zinc oxide. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The solvation properties of model resin and peptide-resins measured in ca. 30 solvent systems correlated better with the sum of solvent electron acceptor (AN) and electron donor (DN) numbers, in 1:1 proportion, than with other solvent polarity parameters. The high sensitivity of the (AN+DN) term to detect differentiated solvation behaviors of peptide-resins, taken as model of heterogeneous and complex solutes, seems to be in agreement with the previously proposed two-parameter model, where the sum of the Lewis acidity and Lewis basicity characters of solvent are proposed for scaling solvent effect. Besides these physicochemical aspects regarding solute-solvent interactions, important implications of this study for the solid phase peptide synthesis were also observed. Each class of peptide-resin displayed a specific salvation profile that was dependent on the amount and the nature of the resin-bound peptide sequence. Plots of resin swelling versus solvent (AN+DN) values allowed the visualization of a maximum salvation region characteristic for each class of resin. This strategy facilitates the selection of solvent systems for optimal solvation conditions of peptide chains in every step of the entire synthesis cycle. Moreover, only the AN and DN concepts allow the understanding of rules for solvation/shrinking of peptide-resins when in homogeneous or in heterogeneous mixed solvents.

A series of powdered cobalt ferrites, CoxFe3-xO4 with 0.66 <= x< 1.00 containing different amounts of Fe-II, were synthesized by a mild procedure, and their Fe and Co site occupancies and structural characteristics were explored using X-ray anomalous scattering and the Rietveld refinement method. The dissolution kinetics, measured in 0.1 M oxalic acid aqueous solution at 70 degrees C, indicate in all cases the operation of a contracting volume rate law. The specific rates increased with the Fell content following approximately a second-order polynomial expression. This result suggests that the transfer of Fe-III controls the dissolution rate, and that the leaching of a first layer of ions Co-II and Fe-II leaves exposed a surface enriched in slower dissolving octahedral Fe-III ions. Within this model, inner vicinal lattice Fe-II accelerates the rate of Fe-III transfer via internal electron hopping. A chain mechanism, involving successive electron transfers, fits the data very well. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We studied the correlation among cellular immune response, the pattern of lung granulomatous lesions and alterations in spleen lymphoid structure in Swiss mice inoculated intravenously with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis strain 18. The animals were evaluated at 24, 48 and 96 h after infection and further studied weekly for 18 weeks by: (i) the macrophage migration inhibition test with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and P. brasiliensis antigen (PbAg); and (ii) histopathology of the lung and spleen lesions. One group of animals was gamma -irradiated (8 Gy), infected under the same conditions and evaluated for the pattern of lung granulomatous lesions and spleen lymphoid structure at 24, 48 and 96 h after infection. During the first week of infection, the non-irradiated animals presented a positive response to PHA and PbAg, compact granulomas in the lungs and a typical hyperplasia of the spleen white pulp. However, from weeks 2 to 5, a depression of the cell-mediated immunity (CMI) response to PHA and PbAg was observed in association with granulomas presenting only large mononuclear cells and lacking both giant cells and a peripheral halo of small mononuclear cells. This pattern of granuloma formation was similar to that seen in gamma -irradiated animals, whose cells involved in CMI were absent. After week 7, the non-irradiated animals showed granulomas characterized by the presence of giant cells and a peripheral halo of small mononuclear cells. This type of granuloma was formed concomitantly with recovery of the CMI and of the lymphoid structure of the spleen. The results showed a correlation among granulomas composed of large mononuclear cells, hypoplasia of the splenic tissue and impaired CMI. This correlation indicated that although granuloma morphogenesis per se does not depend on the activation of CMI, this response is important at later stages during modulation of the cellular composition of the granulomas.

Resin solvation properties affect the efficiency of the coupling reactions in solid-phase peptide synthesis. Here we report a novel approach to evaluate resin solvation properties, making use of spin label electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The aggregating VVLGAAIV and ING sequences were assembled in benzhydrylamine-resin with different amino group contents (up to 2.6 mmol/g) to examine the extent of chain association within the beads. These model peptidyl-resins were first labeled at their N-terminus with the amino acid spin label 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid (Toac). Their solvation properties in different solvents were estimated, either by bead swelling measurement or by assessing the dynamics of their polymeric matrixes through the analysis of Toac EPR spectra, and were correlated with the yield of the acylation reaction. In most cases the coupling rate was found to depend on bead swelling. Comparatively, the EPR approach was more effective. Line shape analysis allowed the detection of more than one peptide chain population, which influenced the reaction. The results demonstrated the unique potential of EPR spectroscopy not only for improving the yield of peptide synthesis, even in challenging conditions, but also for other relevant polymer-supported methodologies in chemistry and biology.

Measurements of global and diffuse solar-radiation, at the Earth's surface, carried out from May 1994 to June 1999 in São Paulo City, Brazil, were used to develop correlation models to estimate hourly, daily and monthly values of diffuse solar-radiation on horizontal surfaces. The polynomials derived by linear regression fitting were able to model satisfactorily the daily and monthly values of diffuse radiation. The comparison with models derived for other places demonstrates some differences related mainly to altitude effects. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objectives: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between central incisor form and face form in 4 racial groups and to investigate if there was agreement among experts in categorizing the central incisor forms. Method and Materials: A total of 160 subjects (40 whites, 40 mulattos, 40 blacks, and 40 Asians) ranging from 18 to 33 years of age were selected. Digital photographic records were made, 1 full-face and 1 intraoral view of the maxillary right central incisor. The outline tracings of the tooth and face images were obtained using Adobe Photoshop 5.0 software. The outline tracings were printed in distinct transparencies, and 3 prosthodontists determined if there was correspondence between the tooth and the face forms by superimposition of the transparencies. If there was disagreement among the prosthodontists' evaluations, the prevalent decision was considered. The experts also classified the central incisor forms into square, ovoid, tapering, or combination at 2 different sessions. At the first session, no instructions were given. At the second session, the prosthodontists were instructed to follow Williams' method of classification. Results: A correspondence between tooth and face forms was found in 23.75% of all cases. Agreement on the tooth form classifications among the prosthodontists occurred in 30.62% of all cases at the first session and 24.37% at the second session. Conclusion: There is not a highly defined correlation between central incisor form and face form in any racial group studied. In addition, the experts were not in fair agreement in categorizing tooth forms.
