This study investigates a model system for potential pharmaceutical materials in fluidised bed processes. In particular, this study proposes a novel use of Raman spectroscopy, which allows in situ measurement of the composition of the material within the fluidised bed in three spatial dimensions and as a function of time. This is achieved by recording Raman spectra from specific volumes of space. The work shows that Raman spectroscopy can be used to provide 3D maps of the concentration and chemical structure of the particles in a fluidised bed within a relatively short (120 s) time window. At the most basic level the technique measures particle density via the intensity of the Raman spectra, however this could be used. More importantly the data are also rich in spectroscopic information on the chemical structure of the fluidised particles which is useful either for monitoring a given granulation process or more generally for the analysis of the dynamics of the airflow if the data were incorporated into an appropriate model. The technique has the potential to give detailed in situ information on how the structure and composition of the granules/powders within the fluidised bed (dryer or granulator) vary with the position and evolve with time. There has been an increasing highlight of supply chain collaboration in UK construction. However, few studies have provided evidence for the current status. Based on the analysis of over 100 questionnaire responses in this research, it is found that the UK construction industry as a whole is experiencing an important change and moving towards supply chain collaboration. On the other hand, an unbalance is found for the change movement. In addition to the questionnaire survey, a series of expert interviews help to explore the specific characteristics of supply chain collaboration in construction and provide practical implications for collaboration strategy implementation.

In 1985 Jacques Attali proposed a new modality for music. He suggests that there be “not a new music, but a new way of making music... a radically new form of the insertion of music into communication” (Attali 134). What Attali foretold has become a firm reality in contemporary musical practice. One has only to look at any current musical activity to encounter work that relies heavily on real-time interaction and dynamic generation and/or modification of materials. But why is this ontologically different ‘mode of essentially interactive and transformative existence’ (Ziarek 195), this ‘new way of making music’, so attractive to contemporary artists? What is motivating artists to abandon a production model in favor of a model of real-time interactive exploration? I will argue that at the foundation of this new artistic ontology lies Deleuze’s concept of the virtual. It is a recognition of the virtual power of music, that music making can be an act of invention, a process where one can discover something never before experienced.

The advantage of using an available and abundant residual biomass, such as lignin, as a raw material for activated carbons is that it provides additional economical interest to the technical studies. In the current investigation, a more complete understanding of adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous systems onto H PO -acid activated lignin has been achieved via microcolumns, which were operated under various process conditions. The practice of using microcolumn is appropriate for defining the adsorption parameters and for screening a large number of potential adsorbents. The effects of solution pH (2-8), initial metal ion concentration (0.483-1.981 mmol·L ), flow rate (1.0-3.1 cm ·min ), ionic strength (0.01-0.30 mmol·L ) and adsorbent mass (0.11-0.465 g) on Cr(VI) adsorption were studied by assessing the microcolumn breakthrough curve. The microcolumn data were fitted by the Thomas model, the modified Dose model and the BDST model. As expected, the adsorption capacity increased with initial Cr(VI) concentration. High linear flow rates, pH values and ionic strength led to early breakthrough of Cr(VI). The model constants obtained in this study can be used for the design of pilot scale adsorption process. © 2012 Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China (CIESC) and Chemical Industry Press (CIP).
