Elevated jasmonic acid (JA) concentrations in response to herbivory can induce wounded plants to produce defences against herbivores. In laboratory and field experiments we compared the effects of exogenous JA treatment to two closely related cabbage species on the host-searching and oviposition preference of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella. JA-treated Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris) was less attractive than untreated Chinese cabbage to ovipositing DBM, while JA-treatment of common cabbage (B. oleracea) made plants more attractive than untreated controls for oviposition by this insect. Similar effects were observed when plants of the two species were damaged by DBM larvae. In the absence of insect-feeding, or JA application, Chinese cabbage is much more attractive to DBM than common cabbage. Inducible resistance therefore appears to occur in a more susceptible plant and induced susceptibility appears to occur in a more resistant plant, suggesting a possible balance mechanism between constitutive and inducible defences to a specialist herbivore.

Biological wastewater treatment is a complex, multivariate process, in which a number of physical and biological processes occur simultaneously. In this study, principal component analysis (PCA) and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) were used to profile and characterise Lagoon 115E, a multistage biological lagoon treatment system at Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant (WTP) in Melbourne, Australia. In this study, the objective was to increase our understanding of the multivariate processes taking place in the lagoon. The data used in the study span a 7-year period during which samples were collected as often as weekly from the ponds of Lagoon 115E and subjected to analysis. The resulting database, involving 19 chemical and physical variables, was studied using the multivariate data analysis methods PCA and PARAFAC. With these methods, alterations in the state of the wastewater due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors could be discerned. The methods were effective in illustrating and visually representing the complex purification stages and cyclic changes occurring along the lagoon system. The two methods proved complementary, with each having its own beneficial features. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1 The herbivorous bug Heteropsylla cubana Crawford (Homoptera: Psyllidae) is a pest of the cattle fodder crop Leucaena (Leguminosae: Mimosoideae). The interaction between the psyllid and three varieties of its Leucaena host plant was investigated in relation to the apparent resistance of some Leucaena varieties (Leucaena leucocephala, Leucaena pallida and their hybrids) to attack. 2 Field trials demonstrated that adult psyllids distinguished among the different varieties of Leucaena over a distance, and were attracted to L. leucocephala in significantly higher numbers than to L. pallida or to the hybrid. Pesticide treatment increased the attractiveness of Leucaena plants, even of those deemed to be psyllid resistant. Numbers of psyllid eggs and nymphs, sampled in the field, reflect the arrival rates of adults at the three plant varieties. 3 Wavelength reflectance data of the three Leucaena varieties were not significantly different from one another, suggesting that psyllids cannot discriminate among the three plants using brightness or wavelength cues. There was a differential release of caryophyllene among the three varieties. Release of caryophyllene in L. leucocephala and the hybrid appeared to be influenced by environmental conditions. 4 Experiments demonstrated that caryophyllene (at least on its own) did not influence the behaviour of leucaena psyllids in relation to leucaena plants. 5 The results suggest that host plant volatiles cannot be dismissed as significant in the interaction between the leucaena psyllid and its Leucaena host plants. Further avenues for investigation are recommended and these are related to novel ways of understanding resistance in insect plant inter-relationships.

Treatment of cut freesia var. Cote d'Azur flowers with methyl jasmonate (MeJA, 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1)) vapour suppressed petal specking caused by Botrytis cinerea infection. MeJA efficacy was concentration and incubation temperature dependent. Disease severity, lesion numbers and lesion diameters decreased with increasing MeJA concentration from 0.025 to 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1). However, there were no significant (P > 0.05) differences among MeJA concentrations examined. MeJA was more effective in reducing B. cinerea flower specking at 20 degrees C than at 12 degrees C. MeJA treatment was ineffective at 5 degrees C. At 20 degrees C, MeJA treatment at 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1) reduced disease severity, lesion numbers and lesion diameters by 58, 50 and 48%, respectively, as compared to untreated controls. In a repeat experiment, disease severity, lesion numbers and lesion diameters on MeJA vapour treated flowers after 12 h of incubation were reduced by 68, 56 and 50%, respectively. MeJA did not exert direct antifungal activity in-vitro, suggesting that treatment in-vivo reduced B. cinerea-induced flower specking by induction of host defence responses. MeJA at 0.1 mu l MeJA l(-1) significantly (P < 0.05) increased vase life of cut freesia flowers and delayed senescence judged by lower wilt scores and higher fresh weights as compared to untreated controls. An integrated anaerobic-aerobic treatment system of sulphate-laden wastewater was proposed here to achieve low sludge production, low energy consumption and effective sulphide control. Before integrating the whole system, the feasibility of autotrophic denitrification utilising dissolved sulphide produced during anaerobic treatment of sulphate rich wastewater was studied here. An upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was operated to treat sulphate-rich synthetic wastewater (TOC = 100 mg/L and sulphate = 500 mg/L) and its effluent with dissolved sulphide and external nitrate solution were fed into an anoxic biofilter. The anaerobic reactor was able to remove 77-85% of TOC at HRT of 3 h and produce 70-90 mg S/L sulphide in dissolved form for the subsequent denitrification. The performance of anoxic reactor was stable, and the anoxic reactor could remove 30 mg N/L nitrate at HRT of 2 h through autotrophic denitrification. Furthermore, sulphur balance for the anoxic filter showed that more than 90% of the removed sulphide was actually oxidised into sulphate, thereby there was no accumulation of sulphur particles in the filter bed. The net sludge productions were approximately 0.15 to 0.18 g VSS/g COD in the anaerobic reactor and 0.22 to 0.31 g VSS/g NO3--N in the anoxic reactor. The findings in this study will be helpful in developing the integrated treatment system to achieve low-cost excess sludge minimisation.
