In recent years the Internet has grown by incorporating billions of small devices, collecting real-world information and distributing it though various systems. As the number of such devices grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage all these new information sources. Several context representation schemes have tried to standardize this information, however none of them have been widely adopted. Instead of proposing yet another context representation scheme, we discuss an efficient way to deal with this diversity of representation schemes. We define the basic requirements for context storage systems, analyse context organizations models and propose a new context storage solution. Our solution implements an organizational model that improves scalability, semantic extraction and minimizes semantic ambiguity.

Epithelial tissues are essential during morphogenesis and organogenesis. During development, epithelial tissues undergo several different remodeling processes, from cell intercalation to cell change shape. An epithelial cell has a highly polarized structure, which is important to maintain tissue integrity. The mechanisms that regulate and maintain apicobasal polarity and epithelial integrity are mostly conserved among all species and in different tissues within the same organism. aPKC-PAR complex localizes in the apical domain of polarized cells, and its function is essential for apicobasal polarization and epithelial integrity. In this work we characterized two novel alleles of aPKC: a temperature sensitive allele (aPKCTS), which has a point mutation on a kinase domain, and another allele with a point mutation on a highly conserved amino acid within the PB1 domain of aPKC (aPKCPB1). Analysis of the aPKCTS mutant phenotypes, lead us to propose that during development different epithelial tissues have differential requirements of aPKC activity. More specifically, our work suggests de novo formation of adherens junctions (AJs) is particularly sensitive to sub-optimal levels of apkc activity. Analysis of the aPKCPB1 allele, suggests that aPKC is likely to have an apical structural function mostly independent of its kinase activity. Altogether our work suggests that although loss of aPKC function is associated to similar epithelial phenotypes (e.g., loss of apicobasal polarization and epithelial integrity), the requirements of aPKC activity within these tissues are nevertheless likely to vary.

The fact that the adult brain is able to produce new neurons or glial cells from neural stem cells (NSC) became one of the most interesting and challenging fields of research in neuroscience. Endogenous adult neurogenesis occurs in two main regions of the brain: the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles and the subgranular zone (SGZ) in the dentate gyrus. Brain injury may be accompanied by increased neurogenesis, although neuroinflammation promotes the activation of microglial cells that can be detrimental to the neurogenic process. Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the factors released by microglia that can be proneurogenic. The mechanism by which NO promotes the proliferation of NSCs has been intensively studied. However, little is known about the role of NO in migration, survival and differentiation of the newborn cells. The aim of this work was to investigate the role of NO from inflammatory origin in proliferation, migration, differentiation and survival of NSCs from the dentate gyrus in a mouse model of status epilepticus. We also assessed neuroinflammation in the same injury model. Our work showed that NO increased proliferation of the early-born cells after seizures, but is detrimental for their survival. NO also increased migration of neuroblasts. Moreover, NO was important to maintain long-term neuroinflammation. Taken together, these results show that NO may be a good target to promote proliferation and migration of NSCs following seizures, but compromises survival of early-born cells.

Die Modellierung orientiert sich an bestehenden Standards wie Dublin Core, Friend Of A Friend (FOAF), Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD) und Resource Description and Access (RDA).

Cost-effective semantic description and annotation of shared knowledge resources has always been of great importance for digital libraries and large scale information systems in general. With the emergence of the Social Web and Web 2.0 technologies, a more effective semantic description and annotation, e.g., folksonomies, of digital library contents is envisioned to take place in collaborative and personalised environments. However, there is a lack of foundation and mathematical rigour for coping with contextualised management and retrieval of semantic annotations throughout their evolution as well as diversity in users and user communities. In this paper, we propose an ontological foundation for semantic annotations of digital libraries in terms of flexonomies. The proposed theoretical model relies on a high dimensional space with algebraic operators for contextualised access of semantic tags and annotations. The set of the proposed algebraic operators, however, is an adaptation of the set theoretic operators selection, projection, difference, intersection, union in database theory. To this extent, the proposed model is meant to lay the ontological foundation for a Digital Library 2.0 project in terms of geometric spaces rather than logic (description) based formalisms as a more efficient and scalable solution to the semantic annotation problem in large scale.

This paper seeks to discover in what sense we can classify vocabulary items as technical terms in the later medieval period. In order to arrive at a principled categorization of technicality, distribution is taken as a diagnostic factor: vocabulary shared across the widest range of text types may be assumed to be both prototypical for the semantic field, but also the most general and therefore least technical terms since lexical items derive at least part of their meaning from context, a wider range of contexts implying a wider range of senses. A further way of addressing the question of technicality is tested through the classification of the lexis into semantic hierarchies: in the terms of componential analysis, having more components of meaning puts a term lower in the semantic hierarchy and flags it as having a greater specificity of sense, and thus as more technical. The various text types are interrogated through comparison of the number of levels in their hierarchies and number of lexical items at each level within the hierarchies. Focusing on the vocabulary of a single semantic field, DRESS AND TEXTILES, this paper investigates how four medieval text types (wills, sumptuary laws, petitions, and romances) employ technical terminology in the establishment of the conventions of their genres.

A genetic algorithm used to design radio-frequency binary-weighted differential switched capacitor arrays (RFDSCAs) is presented in this article. The algorithm provides a set of circuits all having the same maximum performance. This article also describes the design, implementation, and measurements results of a 0.25 lm BiCMOS 3-bit RFDSCA. The experimental results show that the circuit presents the expected performance up to 40 GHz. The similarity between the evolutionary solutions, circuit simulations, and measured results indicates that the genetic synthesis method is a very useful tool for designing optimum performance RFDSCAs.

The paper presents a RFDSCA automated synthesis procedure. This algorithm determines several RFDSCA circuits from the top-level system specifications all with the same maximum performance. The genetic synthesis tool optimizes a fitness function proportional to the RFDSCA quality factor and uses the epsiv-concept and maximin sorting scheme to achieve a set of solutions well distributed along a non-dominated front. To confirm the results of the algorithm, three RFDSCAs were simulated in SpectreRF and one of them was implemented and tested. The design used a 0.25 mum BiCMOS process. All the results (synthesized, simulated and measured) are very close, which indicate that the genetic synthesis method is a very useful tool to design optimum performance RFDSCAs.

The increasing use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in diverse professional and personal contexts calls for new knowledge, and a set of abilities, competences and attitudes, for an active and participative citizenship. In this context it is acknowledged that universities have an important role innovating in the educational use of digital media to promote an inclusive digital literacy. The educational potential of digital technologies and resources has been recognized by both researchers and practitioners. Multiple pedagogical models and research approaches have already contributed to put in evidence the importance of adapting instructional and learning practices and processes to concrete contexts and educational goals. Still, academic and scientific communities believe further investments in ICT research is needed in higher education. This study focuses on educational models that may contribute to support digital technology uses, where these can have cognitive and educational relevance when compared to analogical technologies. A teaching and learning model, centered in the active role of the students in the exploration, production, presentation and discussion of interactive multimedia materials, was developed and applied using the internet and exploring emergent semantic hypermedia formats. The research approach focused on the definition of design principles for developing class activities that were applied in three different iterations in undergraduate courses from two institutions, namely the University of Texas at Austin, USA and the University of Lisbon, Portugal. The analysis of this study made possible to evaluate the potential and efficacy of the model proposed and the authoring tool chosen in the support of metacognitive skills and attitudes related to information structuring and management, storytelling and communication, using computers and the internet.
