In a world filled with poverty, environmental degradation, and moral injustice, social enterprises offer a ray of hope. These organizations seek to achieve social missions through business ventures. Yet social missions and business ventures are associated with divergent goals, values, norms, and identities. Attending to them simultaneously creates tensions, competing demands, and ethical dilemmas. Effectively understanding social enterprises therefore depends on insight into the nature and management of these tensions. While existing research recognizes tensions between social missions and business ventures, we lack any systematic analysis. Our paper addresses this issue. We first categorize the types of tensions that arise between social missions and business ventures, emphasizing their prevalence and variety. We then explore how four different organizational theories offer insight into these tensions, and we develop an agenda for future research. We end by arguing that a focus on social-business tensions not only expands insight into social enterprises, but also provides an opportunity for research on social enterprises to inform traditional organizational theories. Taken together, our analysis of tensions in social enterprises integrates and seeks to energize research on this expanding phenomenon.

I present an optimisation model that links paternal investment, male display and female choice. Although deviced for sticklebacks, it readily applies to other fish with male guarding behaviour. It relies on a few basic assumptions on the ways hatching success depends on paternal investment and clutch size, and male survival on paternal investment and signaling. Paternal investment is here a state-dependent decision, and signal a condition-dependent handicap by which males inform females of how much they are willing to invest. Series of predictions are derived on female and male breeding strategies, including optimal levels of signaling and paternal investment as functions of clutch size, own condition, and residual reproductive value, as well as alternative strategies such as egg kleptoparasitism. Some predictions already have empirical support, for which the present model provides new interpretations. Other might readily be tested, e.g. by simple clutch-size manipulations.

Purpose: Pulmonary hypoplasia is a determinant parameter for extra-uterine life. In the last years, MRI appears as a complement to US in order to evaluate the degree of pulmonary hypoplasia in foetuses with congenital anomalies, by using different methods - fetal lung volumetry (FLV), lung-to-liver signal intensity ratio (LLSIR)-. But until now, information about the correlation between the MRI prediction and the real postnatal outcome is limited. Methods and materials: We retrospectively reviewed the fetal MRI performed at our Institution in the last 8 years and selected the cases with suspicion of fetal pulmonary hypoplasia (n = 30). The pulmonary volumetry data of these foetuses were collected and the lung-to-liver signal intensity ratio (LLSIR) measures performed. These data were compared with those obtained from a control group of 25 foetuses considered as normal at MRI. The data of the study group were also correlated with the autopsy records or the post-natal clinical information of the patients. Results: As expected, the control group showed higher FLV and LLSIR values than the problem group at all gestational ages. Higher values of FLV and LLSIR were associated with a better post-natal outcome. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values and accuracy for the relative LLSIR and the relative FLV showed no significant differences. Conclusion: Our data show that not only the FLV but also the relative LLSIR inform about the degree of fetal lung development. This information may help to predict the fetal outcome and to evaluate the need for neonatal intensive care.

The primary purpose of this brief is to provide various statistical and institutional details on the development and current status of the public agricultural research system in Cape Verde. This information has been collected and presented in a systematic way in order to inform and thereby improve research policy formulation with regard to the Cape Verdean NARS. Most importantly, these data are assembled and reported in a way that makes them directly comparable with the data presented in the other country briefs in this series. And because institutions take time to develop and there are often considerable lags in the agricultural research process, it is necessary for many analytical and policy purposes to have access to longer-run series of data. NARSs vary markedly in their institutional structure and these institutional aspects can have a substantial and direct effect on their research performance. To provide a basis for analysis and cross-country, over-time comparisons, the various research agencies in a country have been grouped into five general categories; government, semi-public, private, academic, and supranational. A description of these categories is provided in table 1.

The Iowa Transportation Improvement Program (Program) is published to inform Iowans of planned investments in our state's transportation system. The Iowa Transportation Commission (Commission) and Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) are committed to programming those investments in a fiscally responsible manner. Iowa's transportation system is multi-modal; therefore, the Program encompasses investments in aviation, transit, railroads, trails, and highways. A major component of the Program is the highway section. The FY2009-2013 highway section is financially balanced and was developed to achieve several objectives. The Commission's primary highway investment objective is the safety, maintenance and preservation of Iowa's existing highway system. The Commission has allocated an annual average of $321 million to achieve this objective. This includes $185 million in 2009 and $170 million annually in years 2010-2013 for preserving the interstate system. It includes $114 million in 2009, $100 million in 2010 and $90 million annually in years 2011-2013 for non-interstate pavement preservation. It includes $38 million annually in 2009 and 2010, and $35 million annually in years 2011-2013 for non-interstate bridges. In addition, $15 million annually is allocated for safety projects. However, due to increasing construction costs, flattened revenues and overall highway systems needs, the Commission acknowledges that insufficient funds are being invested in the maintenance and preservation of the existing highway system. Another objective involves investing in projects that have received funding from the federal transportation act and/or subsequent federal transportation appropriation acts. In particular, funding is being used where it will complete a project, corridor or useable segment of a larger project. As an investment goal, the Commission also wishes to advance highway projects that address the state's highway capacity and economic development needs. Projects that address these needs and were included for completion in the previous program have been advanced into this year's Program to maintain their scheduled completion. This program also includes a small number of other projects that generally either represent a final phase of a partially programmed project or an additional segment of a partially completed corridor. The TIME-21 bill, Senate File 2420, signed by Governor Chet Culver on April 22, provides additional funding to cities, counties and the Iowa DOT for road improvements. This will result in additional revenue to the Primary Road Fund beginning in the second half of FY2009 and gradually increase over time. The additional funding will be included in future highway programming objectives and proposals and is not reflected in this highway program. The Iowa DOT and Commission appreciate the public's involvement in the state's transportation planning process. Comments received personally, by letter, or through participation in the Commission's regular meetings or public input meetings held around the state each year are invaluable in providing guidance for the future of Iowa's transportation system. Treball de recerca realitzat per alumnes d’ensenyament secundari i guardonat amb un Premi CIRIT per fomentar l'esperit científic del Jovent l’any 2010. La hipòtesi amb la que s’ha treballat és que els documents antics són una font de coneixement bàsic i fiable per revelar les relacions familiars i patrimonials. S’ha realitzat un estudi paleogràfic molt acurat i rigorós de sis documents notarials (des del 1905 al 1958) relacionats amb els avantpassats de l’autora. En ells es tracten de temes diversos com capítols matrimonials, compres-vendes, inventaris, herències o repudiacions. Un cop analitzats els seus continguts, s’han desenvolupat dos arbres genealògics on s'han inclòs les informacions bàsiques extretes dels documents analitzats prèviament. S'ha completat l'estudi amb unes visites als arxius de Cervera i Igualada on ha realitzat unes entrevistes relacionades amb el seu treball. També ha visitat els llocs que s'esmenten en els documents. Amb tot el seu estudi, s'ha pogut concloure amb seguretat que la seva hipòtesi era certa: els documents antics són una font real de coneixement ja que, com ella mateixa diu, les fonts escrites revelen molt més que paraules. En aquest cas l'han servit a l'autora per conèixer aspectes diferents relacionats amb la numismàtica, les mides, la toponímia, els drets i deures de les persones i, com no, també d'antigues relacions familiars i patrimonials de la seva família.

L’any 2010, la Policia de la Generalitat-Mossos d’Esquadra regula per primera vegada, mitjançant una ordre de servei 1/2010 i un procediment intern, quines són les principals actuacions policials en matèria d’atenció, denúncia i seguiment a víctimes d’il·lícits penals motivats per l’odi i la discriminació. S’incorporen nous àmbits a l’aplicació d’Atestats i denúncies, amb la finalitat de visibilitzar les següents problemàtiques relacionades amb l’odi i la discriminació: · Aporofòbia · Antisemita · Disminuït físic/sensorial · Disminuït psíquic/mental · Ètnic/origen nacional/origen racial · Homofòbia · Orientació política · Religiós · Sexisme L’any 2012, amb motiu de la implantació d’un nou Pla d’atenció i seguiment a víctimes del Departament d’Interior, la Direcció General de la Policia impulsa un procés de millora de tota la documentació que regula l’atenció de les víctimes no només de violència masclista o domèstica sinó també d’altres col·lectius especialment vulnerables com són les víctimes d’il·lícits penals motivats per l’odi i la discriminació. Es realitza una instrucció operativa, AV-IN-22 L’atenció a les víctimes d’il·lícits penals motivats per l’odi i la discriminació, amb l’objectiu de dotar a la PG-ME d’uns criteris i normes bàsiques d’actuació en relació a la prevenció, la detecció, particularitats de la instrucció / denúncia, i el seguiment i protecció d’aquestes víctimes.

A nivell municipal: creació de diferents consells LGTB.Creació el 2007 de la figura del Fiscal interlocutor en delictes amb component de discriminació per orientació sexual. Coincidència durant 2008 de diferents esdevenimentsLGTB: Conferencia internacional de policies gais-les en Barcelona, Eurogames, Creuers internacionals, mostra internacional de cinema, Gaycircus, Loveball, Circuit-festival, etc.

En el nou marc universitari que dibuixa l’adaptació de les titulacions a l’Espai Europeud’Educació Superior, es proposa que el titulat de grau en Psicologia acabi la carrera amb lescompetències bàsiques mínimes d’ajut psicològic que li permetin fer front a situacionsd’emergència inesperades i reaccionar de manera professional sense empitjorar la situació operjudicar l’estat de les víctimes, i amb un mínim de seguretat en allò què ha de fer o, al menys,en allò que no ha de fer. Es considera que hauria de tenir, com a mínim, el mateix nivell deformació que tenen altres col·lectius que habitualment es troben implicats en una emergència(personal sanitari, bombers, voluntaris, etc.) per tal que no es trobi en inferioritat de condicionspel que es refereix a la manera de proporcionar primers auxilis psicològics a víctimes. Esproposa un programa formatiu en el títol de grau en Psicologia

Generating a diverse T cell memory population through vaccination is a promising strategy to overcome pathogen epitope variability and tolerance to tumor Ags. The effector and memory pool becomes broad in TCR diversity by recruiting high- and low-affinity T cells. We wanted to determine which factors dictate whether a memory T cell pool has a broad versus focused repertoire. We find that inflammation increases the magnitude of low- and high-affinity T cell responses equally well, arguing against a synergistic effect of TCR and inflammatory signals on T cell expansion. We dissect the differential effects of TCR signal strength and inflammation and demonstrate that they control effector T cell survival in a bim-dependent manner. Importantly, bim-dependent cell death is overcome with a high Ag dose in the context of an inflammatory environment. Our data define the framework for the generation of a broad T cell memory pool to inform future vaccine design.

Los trastornos musculoesqueléticos son el resultado de diferentes factores de riesgo laborales, incluyendo los ergonómicos. Las condiciones de empleo y trabajo en algunos sectores de la economía centroamericana son deficientes y contribuyen al aumento de este problema.Objetivos: Nos planteamos como objetivo valorar la prevalencia de los problemas musculoesqueléticos en una muestra de trabajadores centroamericanos asalariados, así como su relación con los riesgos ergonómicos, específicamente en trabajadores del sector servicios y en el sector construcción.
