An important constituent group and a key resource of higher education institutions (HEIs) is the faculty or academic staff. The centrality of the faculty role makes it a primary sculptor of institutional culture and has implications for the quality of the institution and therefore has a major role in achieving the objectives of the institution. Demand for academic staff in higher education has been increasing and may be expected to continue to increase. Moreover the performance of academic staff as teachers and researchers determines much of the student satisfaction and has an impact on student learning. There are many factors that serve to undermine the commitment of academics to their institutions and careers. Job satisfaction is important in revitalizing staff motivation and in keeping their enthusiasm alive. Well motivated academic staff can, with appropriate support, build a national and international reputation for themselves and the institution in the professional areas, in research and in publishing. This paper aims to identify the issues and their impacts on academic staff job satisfaction and motivation within Portuguese higher education institutions reporting an ongoing study financed by the European Union through the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

ABSTRACT:The aim of this dissertation is to understand the influence of the ideology of the "Estado Novo" in the contents inserted in the children's supplement Pim-Pam-Pum. It also aims to relate, in a certain historical period, the children’s supplement of one of the most important newspapers of the time, "O Século", with the ideology of the "Estado Novo". In addition, it intends to identify the values ingrained in the numbers to be analysed in Pim-Pam-Pum in a period of two years. The period under analysis of the children's supplement Pim-Pam-Pum includes the numbers from 1953 to 1955. One of the main conclusions of this study is that the children's aforementioned supplement aimed to educate its audience in a joyful manner. On the other hand, it transmitted as well as inculcated with the families’ collaboration the main Salazarist values. The press becomes a weapon of ideological propaganda of the "Estado Novo" in an attempt to keep harmful information to the regime from the internal and external pressures. With the institucionalization of censorship after the Second World War, the careful surveillance of publications by the competent and relevant organisms in collaboration with the censorship made by the journalists themselves, was simplified. However, the press tried to accomplish its mission of cultural and playful diffusion by means of newspapers, magazines and children's supplements.

ABSTRACT:The appropriate use of ICTs in teaching mathematics, today is considered by somo to be justified and inevitable, hoping that their use will improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. In this investigation, we intend to test the Software Winplot, teaching and learning of the graph of quadratic functions with students of grade 10, attending the second cycle of secondary School nº9099 in order to verify that improves teaching and learning of this subject. For our research selected two groups of students in 10th grade who acted as the controlo group and experimental group, after both group had undergone two pre-test, the experimental group performed the learning in the computer lab with the aid of Software Winplot, over 8 weeks during the second quarter of the academic year 2009/2010. Thr control gropu performed the learning, while the experimental group, in rregular class room without help of the Software Winplot.Comparing the two groups, the t test for independent samples pairs, shows us that there is no statistically significant differences between the two groups, because the significance levels are greater than p=0,05, this time we can say that experimental group, not yielded better results than the control group, so the Software did not result the desired effect on the learning with students from 10th grade of the School of the second cycle of Secondary nº9099, located in Viana (Luanda/Angola).

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to investigate the main issues that prevent the physical education programs to be applied on the Portuguese schools. Considering the disciplinary group particularities, the school facilities or the environment, we intend to understand the reasons that may explain why the majority of the Portuguese schools resist to this change process, not creating conditions for the development of equal opportunities on the physical education of every student. This study intend to be a contribute for the physical education development on the educational reality, highlighting the common factors of the reference schools that apply the physical education programs. The method integrates two phases of development: the first one extracts the common and custom factors between the Group A professors, consisting of physical education programs authors and one expert in the field of curriculum development. The second phase follows the previous logic for the Group B, a group that meets professors with direct contact of schools day-to-day. The consciousness and knowledge about the existing problems in schools that don‟t apply physical education programs it‟s important, because it enables the search for solutions. This will allow innovations development, giving students the opportunity to grow within the many qualities that the discipline of physical education can provide and develop. Growth based on autonomy, cooperation and development of healthy lifestyle habits as future citizens.

Education for health is a process in which all public health and medical care personnel are involved. People learn both formally (planned learning experiences) and informally (unplanned learning experiences). Since the patient, the client, the consummer and the community expect public health and medical care personnel to assist them with health and disease issues and problems, the response of the professional "educates" the customer whether the professional intends to educate or not. Therefore, it is incumbent on all public health and medical care professionals to understand their educational functions and their role in health education. It is also important that the role of the specialist in education be clear. The specialist, as to all other specialists, has an in-depth knowledge of his area of expertise, i.e., the teaching/learning process; s/he may function as a consultant to others to enhance the educational potential of their role or s/he may work with a team or with communities or groups of patients. Specific competencies and knowledge are required of the health education specialist; and there is a body of learning and social change theory which provides a frame of reference for planning, implementing and evaluating educational programs. Working with others to enhance their potential to learn and to make informed decisions about health/disease issues is the hallmark of the health education specialist.

Joining efforts of academic and corporate teams, we developed an integration architecture - MULTIS - that enables corporate e-learning managers to use a Learning Management System (LMS) for management of educational activities in virtual worlds. This architecture was then implemented for the Formare LMS. In this paper we present this architecture and concretizations of its implementation for the Second Life Grid/OpenSimulator virtual world platforms. Current systems are focused on activities managed by individual trainers, rather than groups of trainers and large numbers of trainees: they focus on providing the LMS with information about educational activities taking place in a virtual world and/or being able to access within the virtual world some of the information stored in the LMS, and disregard the streamlining of activity setup and data collection in multi-trainer contexts, among other administrative issues. This architecture aims to overcome the limitations of existing systems for organizational management of corporate e-learning activities.
