The existence of organic and inorganic contaminants present in both fossil and biomass fuels and the fact that they can provide undesirable effects (environmental problems, corrosion processes, lead to storage instability, and others) implies a rigorous quality control of these fuels, although these contaminants make up a small part of the final fuel composition. Considering the rising importance of fuel ethanol in the worldwide panorama, this review aims at reporting the use of successful alternative analytical methods in the monitoring of organic and inorganic contaminants at trace levels, used to determine and to quantify these substances in fuel ethanol and also presenting all official norms for quality control of fuel ethanol employed by ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Norms), ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), and ECS (European Committee for Standardization).

This article reports systematic results of corona poling measurements obtained on biaxially stretched polyvinylidene fluoride films charged in dry air. Charging was performed using the constant current corona triode. The dependence of the poling process on the sample thickness, charging current, and successive charging processes was investigated. Phase transitions from alpha to delta and to beta phases were observed when virgin samples were corona charged. The thermal pulse technique showed that the polarization profiles during charging can be made consistently almost uniform and that the ferroelectric reorientation can be associated with the rising plateau region displayed on potential buildup curves. The alternating conductivity, sigma*(f) = sigma'(f) + i sigma ''(f), of in situ polymerized polyaniline thin films doped with hydrochloric acid, deposited on top of an interdigitated gold line array previously deposited on glass substrates, were measured in the frequency (f) range between 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz and in the temperature range from 100 to 430 K. The results for sigma'(f) are typical of a disordered solid material: for frequencies lower than a certain hopping frequency gamma(hop), log[sigma'(f)] is frequency-independent rising almost linearly for in logf > gamma(hop). A master curve was thus obtained by plotting the real component of the conductivity using normalized scales sigma'(f)/sigma(dc) and f/gamma(hop) which is indicative of a single process operating in the whole frequency range. An expression encompassing the conduction through a disordered structure taken from previous random free energy barrier model for hopping carriers, as well a dielectric function to represent the capacitive behavior of the PAni was employed to fit the experimental results. The dielectric constant and activation energy for hopping carriers were obtained as function of the polymer doping level. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective: the purpose of this study is to make use of scanning electron microscopy in order to comparatively analyze the morphological alterations to human and bovine enamel and dentin. Earlier data: Many a morphological study involving Er:YAG laser can be found in the literature. Still, not a single study comparing the effects of this infrared laser in human and bovine teeth has been reported. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two slices of human and bovine enamel and dentin were evenly divided into four groups. With the exception of the control group, the samples were irradiated with Er:YAG laser, focused at a distance of 12 mm and a 10-Hz frequency, with 150, 250, and 350 mJ of output energy per pulse for 10 seconds. After irradiation all specimens were observed under a scanning electron microscope. Results: There was practically no morphological difference for those samples that underwent 150 mJ/pulse irradiation. The dentin exposed to 250 mJ had a few open dentinal tubules. These were seen in enamel after a 350 mJ irradiation, in which the energy was able to reach the dentin. Conclusions: the breadth of this study allows us to state that the pattern between the species grew more heterogenous as the energy density was increased and that irradiation with 150 mJ/pulse resulted in greater likeness in human and bovine enamel and dentin.

The radial magnetic field profile during implosion of a reversed field current sheath in a theta-pinch was investigated through local measurements and simulation of hybrid code. The actual profile was defined by Hermite interpolation polynomial through mean value of the field at discrete radial position of measurements. Simulation profile was provided by the numerical code with appropriate initial conditions. Classical and anomalous collision process were taken in account in the theoretical model. The results indicated that anomalous effects play major role during the implosion phase of current sheath in a slow rising theta pinch device.

Blast furnace gas yield is essentially controlled by a gas-solid reaction phenomenon, which strongly influences hot metal manufacturing costs. As a result of rising prices for reducing agents on the international market, Companhia Siderurgica Nacional decided to inject natural gas into its blast furnaces. With more gas inside the furnace, the burden permeability became even more critical. To improve blast furnace gas yield, a new technological approach was adopted; raising the metallic burden reaction surface. To that end, a special sinter was developed with permeability being controlled by adding micropore nucleus forming agents, cellulignin coal, without, however, degrading its mechanical properties. This paper shows the main process parameters and the results from physicochemical characterisation of a sinter with controlled permeability, on a pilot scale, compared to those of conventional sinter. Gas flow laboratory simulations have conclusively corroborated the positive effects of micropore nucleus forming agents on enhancing sinter permeability.

With the advance of agriculture, there was consequent rising in environment degradation. Therefore, It is interesting the use of plants which have in their chemical composition substances capable of helping in the control of weeds to minimize the use of pesticides. Hence, the objective of this paper was to evaluate solutions of leucena extract on weeds that are frequent on soybean crop. The treatments were leucena extracts at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% at room temperature water and water heated to 80 degrees C. The extracts were obtained by crushing 200g of leucena leaves and mixing them with one liter of distilled water with the help of a blender. Seeds were kept in B.O.D. at a temperature of 25 degrees C, with a photoperiod of 12 hours of light. Evaluations were done oil a daily basis, from the first to the last day of the experiment, varying according to the species. Results show a negative interference of the extracts, both hot and cold, in the root length of Ipomoea grandifolia, in the percentage of germination and in the root length of Arrowleaf sida and Hair beggarticks. There was no negative interference in the analyzed parameters for soybean seeds. Thus, the results indicate allelopatic potential of Leucaena leuucocephala as an alternative for the management of weeds without interfering on the development of the soybean crop.

1. 1. The respiratory responses of Pomacea lineata to short-term (or acute) exposure to temperature and oxygen tension variations were investigated in animals acclimated to 25°C. 2. 2. The respiratory rates increased with rising temperatures; this increase was sharper between 15 and 25°C than at any other temperature interval; a tendency to a plateau in the RT curve was recorded between 25 and 35°C. 3. 3. All animals survived well to 1 hr exposure to the extreme temperatures used (5 and 40°C). 4. 4. In two different experimental approaches, the animals showed ability to regulate the respiratory rate in declining oxygen tensions, at least down to 10% (70.8 mmHg) oxygen. 5. 5. After 1 hr exposure to hypoxic conditions, P. lineata exhibited the pattern of underpayment of the oxygen debt acquired. 6. 6. Six out of ten animals survived after 40 days in anoxia (100% nitrogen). © 1987.

The Itaqui Granitoid Complex is a drop shaped WNW-ESE trending intrusion with its head' at west. Its contacts with the low-grade metamorphic rocks of the Sao Roque Group are intrusive at west, northwest, north and northeast, and tectonic at south and northeast. The complex is built up by four main intrusive phases which characterize a rising and unroofing process. Petrographically the Itaqui granite comprises five distinct magmatic associations in nine igneous units. -from English summary
