Blends of nylon-6 and epoxidised ethylene propylene diene (eEPDM) rubber were prepared through reactive mixing. It is found that the toughness of nylon-6 can be much improved by this method, and that the particle size of eEPDM is much smaller than that of unexpoxidised EPDM (uEPDM) rubber in a nylon-6 matrix. This indicates that the epoxy group in eEPDM could react with a nylon-6 end group to form a graft copolymer which could act as an interfacial compatibiliser between the nylon-6 and the eEPDM rubber dispersed phase. Compatibilization of blends of polybutadiene and poly(methyl methacrylate) with butadiene-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. When the diblock copolymers are added to the blends, the size of PB particles decreases and their size distribution gets narrower. In PB/PMMA7.6K blends with P(B-b-MMA)25.2K as a compatibilizer, most of micelles exist in the PMMA phase. However, using P(B-b-MMA)38K as a compatibilizer, the micellar aggregation exists in PB particles besides that existing in the PMMA phase. The core of a micelle in the PMMA phase is about 10 nm. In this article the influences of temperature and homo-PMMA molecular weight on compatibilization were also examined. At a high temperature PB particles in blends tend to agglomerate into bigger particles. When the molecular weight of PMMA is close to that of the corresponding block of the copolymer, the best compatibilization result would be achieved. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Effects of the compatibilizer polypropylene grafted with glycidyl methacrylate(PP-g-GMA) on the morphology, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene and polycarbonate blends (PP/PC) were studied. It was found that the addition of PP-g-GMA significantly changed their morphology. The mean size of domains reduced from 20 mu m to less than 5 mu m. The dispersed domain size is also strongly dependent upon the content of PP-g-GMA. The interfacial tension of PP/PC/PP-g-GMA (50/30/20) is only about one-tenth of PP/PC (70/30). The crystallization temperature of PP in PP/PC/PP-g-GMA is 5-8 degrees C higher than that of PP in PP/PC blends. Characterization studies based on mechanical properties, differential scanning calorimetry, rheology and morphological evidence obtained by using scanning electron microscopy support the hypothesis that an in-situ copolymer PP-g-PC was formed during the blending process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the morphology of blends of PA1010 and polypropylene (PP) compatibilized with polypropylene grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (PP-g-GMA). It is found that the morphologies are dependent on the content of glycidyl methacrylate in PP-g-GMA and the mixing time. The size of the dispersed PP particles decreases as the content of GMA in the PP-g-GMA increases for binary blends of PA1010 and PP-g-GMA. Similar results are obtained for changing the mixing time. Ternary blends of PA1010, PP, and PP-g-GMA indicate that morphologies depend on the content of glycidyl metyacrylate in the PP-g-GMA and the miscibility of PP and PP-g-GMA. By changing the content of GMA in PP-g-GMA, it was possible to introduce significant changes of morphology. A matrix removal TEM method is used to investigate the interfacial structure of PA1010/PP blends containing PP-g-GMA as a compatibilizer. This technique shows the reaction product between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA to be located at interface as a surrounding layer around domain particles. SEM observation on the interface shows that the adhesion between PA1010 and pure PP is very weak and their interface boundary is sharp. For the samples of PA1010 and PP-g-GMA, it was found that the interface was not so obvious, and the reaction between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA strengthens the interface significantly. An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance was employed to monitor directly the growth of vanadium hexacyanoferrate (VHF) films on platinum substrates during electrodeposition and interfacial coagulation in the solution containing sulfuric acid electrolyte, vanadium(IV) and hexacyanoferrate(III). Mass changes of the gold/crystal working electrode were correlated with cyclic voltammetry data. Effects of cations (NH4+, Li+, Na+ and K+), anions (SO42- and NO3-) and solvent during redox reactions of the films were studied. The results show that cations were incorporated into the film during reduction and expelled from the film during oxidation. Solvent also participates in VHF electrochemistry, and its role cannot be neglected. Anions play no role in VHF electrochemistry. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Mechanical and structural properties of blends of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PBS-C) with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were investigated using tensile and bending testing, scanning electron microscopy and transition electron microscopy. The incorporation of minor amounts of UHMWPE (2 wt.-%) into PES-C has a reinforcement effect. With higher concentrations of UHMWPE, the mechanical properties decrease gradually. Structural studies demonstrated that the blends are multiphasic in the whole composition range. The minor UHMWPE, dispersed uniformly and oriented along the flow direction, as well as the strong interfacial adhesion contribute to the increase of the mechanical performance of the blends. The domain size of the UHMWPE phase was found to increase with the increase of its concentration.

A series of macrocyclic arylate dimers have been selectively synthesized by an interfacial polycondensation of o-phthaloyldichloride with bisphenols. A combination of GPC, FAB-MS, H-1 and C-13 NMR unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature. Although single-crystal X-ray analysis of two such macrocycles reveals no severe strain on the cyclic structures, these macrocycles can undergo facile melt polymerization to give high molecular weight polyarylates.

In this paper, unepoxidized ethylene propylene diene rubber (uEPDM) was first epoxidized with formic acid and H2O2, and then the epoxidized ethylene propylene diene rubber (eEPDM) was melt-mixed with PET resin in a Brabender-like apparatus. Toughening of PET matrix was achieved by this method. The dispersion of rubber particles and phase structure of the blends were also observed by SEM. It has been suggested that the epoxy groups in the eEPDM could react with PET end groups to form a graft copolymer which could act as an interfacial compatibilizer between the PBT matrix and eEPDM rubber dispersed phase. This is beneficial to the improvement of the impact performance of PBT. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

This work deals with the effect of compatibilizer on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of polypropylene/polycarbonate (PP/ PC) blends. The blends, containing between 0 to 30 vol % of polycarbonate and a compatibilizer, were prepared by means of a twin-screw extruder. The compatibilizer was produced by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene in the molten state. Blend morphologies were controlled by adding PP-g-GMA as compatibilizer during melt processing, thus changing dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the polycarbonate phase. With PP-g-GMA, volume fractions increased from 2.5 to 20, and much finer dispersions of discrete polycarbonate phase with average domain sizes decreased from 35 to 3 mu m were obtained. The WAXD spectra showed that the crystal structure of neat PP was different from that in blends. The DSC results suggested that the degree of crystallization of PP in blends decreased as PC content and compatibilizer increased. The mechanical properties significantly changed after addition of PP-g-GMA. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Blends of a poly(ether sulfone) (PES) and a polycarbonate (PC) were prepared by melt-mixing and were studied by tensile tests, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, density measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The blends were found to be two-phase systems and an interfacial layer was presumed to be formed between two phases, which was verified by TEM. A synergism of elongation at break and tensile modulus was shown in PES/PC blends. The effects of the crosshead speed on the mechanical properties were discussed for blends with different PES/PC weight ratios.

Stable bilayer thin films of indium tin oxide (ITO) on CdS and CdS on ITO were formed for the window material of solar cells by chemical bath and sputtering methods. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies have shown that both the ITO and CdS films are continuous, homogeneous, with high compactness. Measurement of the CdS film thickness across the 2 x 4 cm(2) reveals the good uniformity of these films. Four-point probe measurements show that the resistivity of a CdS film on an ITO surface is much better than that of the single CdS film The thermal stability of an ITO/CdS bilayer, interfacial reaction and optical transmittance were investigated at different annealing temperatures and environments (air, vacuum and N-2 + H-2). The results showed that the ITO/CdS bilayer film is a good window material for the CuInSe2 and CdTe cells. It is a simple method using a small amount of the cadmium compound.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to study the miscibility of blends of a graft copolymer of poly(methyl methacrylate) on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE-g-PMMA, G-3) with poly(vinylidene fluoride)(b) (PVF2) and the compatibilization of blends of LLDPE/PVF2. The specific interaction between PMMA side chains and PVF2 in G-3/PVF2 binary blends is weaker than that between the homopolymers PMMA and PVF2. There are two states of PVF2 in the melt of a G-3/PVF2 (60/40, w/w) blend, one as pure PVF2 and the other interacting with PMMA side chains. The miscibility between PMMA side chains and PVF2 affects the crystallization of PVF2. LLDPE-g-PMMA was demonstrated to be a good compatibilizer in LLDPE/PVF2 blends, improving the interfacial adhesion and dispersion in the latter. Diffusion of PMMA side chains into PVF2 in the interfacial region reduces the crystallization rate and lowers the melting point (T-m) and the crystallization temperature (T-c) of PVF2 in the blends.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an image analyser are used to study morphologies of the fractured surface, etched by hot phenol, of polypropylene/maleated polypropylene/polyamide 12 PP/PP-MA/PA12) = 65/10/25 blend and PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend. The particle dimension and its distribution of PA12 dispersed phase in these blends are much lower and narrower than that of the PP/PA12. blends. Especially, most of the particles in the PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend are smaller than 0.1 mu m. The effect of the morphology of PP/PA12 blends on their crystallization behaviour is studied using differential scanning calorimetry and SEM. PA12 dispersed phase coarsens during annealing in the PP/PP-MA/PA12 = 65/10/25 blend. The mechanism of coarsening of the PA12 dispersed phase is a coalescence process. The intense mixing between the PP component and the PA12 component through reaction of PP-MA and PA12 leads to a change of dynamic mechanical behaviour of the components. A separation method is used to separate the polyolefin parts (precipitated from hot phenol), from PA12 parts (hot phenol filtrate). Of PP/PP-MA/PA12 = 65/10/25 blend, infra-red measurements and elementary analysis show that the precipitate has a lower PA12 content than the feed, whereas the filtrate has a higher PA12 content. From PP-MA/PA12 = 75/25 blend, PA12 contents in the precipitate and the filtrate are the same as in the feed. This implies that all PA12 has reacted with all PP-MA in the latter case while not in the former case. Using the method of interface exposure, interfacial reaction of PP-MA with PA12 is studied by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (X.p.s.). Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The synthesis is described of some aromatic polyamides based on unsubstituted, and methyl-, carboxy-, and sulfo-substituted diamines by interfacial polycondensation. Some of them are crosslinked and some of them contain heterocyclic aromatic rings. Their chemical structures are characterized by IR and C-13 solid-state NMR spectra and the spectra are interpreted.
