Lepturacanthus savala (Cuvier, 1829) constitutes a minor fishery contributing 23.3% to the total ribbonfish catch in Maharashtra. Based on the length data obtained from shrimp trawlers and the traditionally operated bag nets, age and growth of the species have been investigated from Mumbai waters. Growth was studied by various computer-based methods incorporated in FiSAT Programme. The growth parameters L∞ and K (on annual basis) by Gulland-Holt plot were 683.3 mm and 0.87, respectively. As the seasonal temperature variations in coastal waters of Mumbai are not pronounced, the seasonally oscillating growth patterns by ELEFAN and Appledoorn's method were not considered. Following the von Bertalanffy growth model, the fish attains 399.8, 567.2 and 637.4 mm at the end of 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively, and the lifespan of the fish is about 3.3 years.

Data on age and growth of the following species were reviewed and von Bertalanffy's growth curves were fitted: Hilsa kelee, Decapterus russellii, D. macrosoma, Rastrelliger kanagurta, Pellona ditchela, Thryssa vitrirostris and Leiognathus equulus. For the five first species, microstructures in the otoliths were used for ageing. For most species growth curves based on size-frequency distributions are also presented. The reliability of the data presented is discussed.

Model-based optical motion capture systems require knowledge of the position of the markers relative to the underlying skeleton, the lengths of the skeleton's limbs, and which limb each marker is attached to. These model parameters are typically assumed and entered into the system manually, although techniques exist for calculating some of them, such as the position of the markers relative to the skeleton's joints. We present a fully automatic procedure for determining these model parameters. It tracks the 2D positions of the markers on the cameras' image planes and determines which markers lie on each limb before calculating the position of the underlying skeleton. The only assumption is that the skeleton consists of rigid limbs connected with ball joints. The proposed system is demonstrated on a number of real data examples and is shown to calculate good estimates of the model parameters in each. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reproductive biology of Otolithes cuvieri (Trewavas, 1974) is reported in the present communication. The size at first maturity for the females was estimated to be 275 mm. The spawning activity was observed throughout the year with two peaks occurring in April and June. Two prominent peaks of gonadosomatic index (April and June) also support the view of two major spawning. Relative fecundity ranged from 71,574 to 79,680 eggs per 100g of body weight. Relationship of fecundity with fish length, fish weight and ovary weight of the species has been established as F = -132971 + 1447.441 x L, F = 124195 + 468.798 x W and F = 250517.5 + 3369.029 x OW, respectively. Study of sex ratio by random sampling of the catches indicated the dominance of females in commercial catches of Mumbai coast.

The impacts of shrimp farming on water quality and effluent loading of shrimp farms in southwest (Khulna) and southeast (Cox's Bazar) regions of Bangladesh was investigated during March-August and August-October season, respectively. Water salinity fluctuated from 3.0 to 15.0 ppt in the southwest, whereas it was between 2.5 to 20.0 ppt. in southeast region. Total ammonia nitrogen as recorded in most farms of Cox's Bazar region was higher (0. 1160.438 mg/L) than the recommended level of shrimp farming. Mean values of total ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen at the outlet of shrimp farms were higher than those of inlet in both regions. Mean values of phosphate phosphorus and total phosphorus at outlet were lower than inlet except in harvest time of Penaeus monodon. Total suspended solids were deposited on the bottom of shrimp farms in both regions, which resulted in higher concentration in inlets than outlets in both regions.

In recent years, the ecological degradation, loss of technological sustenance and other multidimensional consequences caused by shrimp farming have made the experts and authorities bound to rethink about the development of the industry. The present study describes the water and sediment quality, and culture and management techniques in five selected shrimp farms at Paikgacha, Khulna throughout a production cycle from March to September 1997. The water quality parameters were found to be more or less suitable throughout the cycle. The concentration of the limiting major nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus and minor nutrients such as calcium and magnesium were satisfactorily high, concentrations of the organic matter content were also high. Remarkable negative correlation of shrimp production with secchi depth was observed among the farms. Production per cycle ranged between 273 kg/ha and as low as 63 kg/ha.

Studies on reproductive biology and artificial propagation including larval rearing of freshwater mud eel, Monopterus cuchia and spiny eel, Mastacembelus armatus were attempted. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) of mud eel ranged from 0.41 (August) to 5.52 (June) in males and 0.53 (August) to 7.61 (June) in females. In both cases the GSI showed a peak in June. Fecundity ranged from 228 (TL - 396 mm; W - 78g) to 5510 (TL - 865 mm; W - 630 g). In case of spiny eel, the GSI varied from 0.65 (August) to 8.30 (July) in males and 0.70 (August) to 10.46 (July) in females. GSI showed single peak in July. Fecundity ranged from 570 (TL - 240 mm; W - 30 g) to 10870 (TL - 601; W - 350g). Histology of the testes and ovaries of the eels were carried out to investigate the gonadal development stages during the reproductive months (August to November 2003). In case of male M. cuchia, the secondary primordial germ cells, primary spermatogonium, some spermatogonia A and clone of spermatogonium B in testis were observed in September. In October-males different sized lobules having spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids were observed. In the ovary of M. cuchia, polygonal shaped oocytes were seen during September. The oogonia were reduced with dense and irregular shaped during October. Numerous pycnotic cells were visible during November. In male M. armatus numerous broken lobule walls were found in testes during September. In October, abundant primary germ cells, pycnotic nests of degenerating cells, spermatogonia and spermatids were observed. In females, ovaries had distinct yolk vesicles stage and yolk granules stages in August. In September, the follicular cells of the oogonia were ruptured, shrunk forming irregular shaped in October. Oogonia were also shrunk with thin, irregular shaped structure but broken parts of the ruptured follicular cells were scattered in case of M. armatus. Experimental attempts on artificial propagation indicated that both freshwater eels were difficult to breed using inducing agents like pituitary glands (PG) of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 150 mg per kg of body weight. Same doses were used for both sexes with equal sex-ratio. In both cases, brood fish died at higher doses of injection given at 100 and 150 mg PG/kg bodyweight. However, M. cuchia breed naturally in cisterns when provided with water hyacinths and tunnel in muddy bottom. M. cuchia fed with chopped cooked fish attained a mean weight of 18.75 ± 2.3 g and cent percent survival. While in case of M. armatus best growth by weight (12.0 ± 2.48 g) and cent percent survival were achieved using chopped raw fish. Car tyre was observed as best shelter for attaining the mean weight gain 22.53 ± 2.24 g and cent percent survival of M. cuchia. While PVC pipe was found to be the best shelter for M. armatus, where it attained the mean weight of 12.73 ± 1.88 g and cent percent survival.

Investigation on the seasonal distribution and abundance of various major taxa of phyto and zooplankton and the corresponding physico-chemical characteristics were carried out in four selected stations between the latitude 22°35.494N N-23°23.987 N and longitude 90°35.793 E- 90°49.061 E of the Meghna river system, Bangladesh. Drop count method was followed for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of both phyto- and zooplankton. A total of 41 phytoplankton genera belonging to 17 families and 13 zooplankton genera belonging to 11 families were recorded. Zooplankton growth cycle was noticeably less (3.0%) than the phytoplankton abundance almost throughout the study period. Quantity of plankton registered to increase chronologically from the upper to lower stretches of the river. During summer investigation the load of phytoplankton was recorded maximum (11,300-51,850 No/1). Ratio-wise quantitative difference between zoo- and phytoplankton in composition of the total standing crop fluctuated between 1.0:5.5 and 1:1037. Among the phytoplanktonic groups, Chlorophyceae was found to be dominating (95.0%) in all sampling stations. Protococcus, a single genus of Chlorophyceae played a unique role during summer, contributing the highest density of about 74.0%. The pattern of qualitative and quantitative difference of plankton standing crop in different sampling sites can be attributed to the existing physico-chemical characteristics, mainly water temperature, pH and hardness.

A study was conducted to ascertain the existing farm water, effluent and feed quality of selected giant freshwater prawn farms from major prawn farming areas (Bagerhat Sadar, Noakhali Sadar and Mymensingh) of Bangladesh during July to November 2005. Water quality parameters such as the mean values of dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, nitrite-nitrogen, phosphate-phosphorus and ammoniacal nitrogen did not show any significantly differences among the farming areas. Whereas significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the mean values of temperature, secchi disc visibility, pH and chlorophyll a. However, all the water quality parameters in the farming areas were within the suitable range for prawn culture. There was no significant variation in nutrients concentration of discharged effluent among the prawn farming areas. All of the nutrients measured in effluent water were within the acceptable range and did not seem to pose a direct threat to the recipient environment. The analysed crude protein contents of commercial CP, Quality and Saudi-Bangla prawn feeds were 31.84%, 27.21% and 28.97%, respectively, whereas all analysed farm made feeds were less than 25%. The other nutrients of prawn feeds varied largely with the source of feeds and ingredients used to prepare feed. The annual yield of prawn varied from 320.4 to 512.6 kg/ha (mean 412.3 kg/ha) depending on the management system.

Population growth and reproductive capacity of brackishwater rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were evaluated, for a period of 8 days in a temperature controlled ( =25°C) microalgallaborarory, under three different algal feeding regimens. The algal species that were tested are: (i) Chlorella sp. (T1), Tetraselmis chui (T2), Nannochloropsis oculata (T 3). The feeding density of each algal species was maintained similar as of 4.5xW6 ceHs mi. The rotifer fed on T. chui showed the highest (p<0.05) population growth (131.5 ind./ml), compared to that fed on Chlorella sp (45.67 ind./ml) and N oculata (43.44 ind./ml). The abundance of egg bearing rotifers was also higher (35.77%) with T. chuithan with Chlorella sp (27.76%) and N oculara (24.60%). The results of the present study indicate that T. chui could be the most suitable algal food for the stock culture of locally isolated rotifer B. plicatilis.

Experiments were conducted investigating the interaction between a normal shock wave and a corner boundary layer in a constant area rectangular duct. Active corner suction and passive blowing were applied to manipulate the natural corner flows developing in the working section of the Cambridge University supersonic wind tunnel. In addition robust vane micro-vortex generators were applied to the corners of the working section. Experiments were conducted at Mach numbers of M∞=1.4 and 1.5. Flow visualisation was carried out through schlieren and surface oil flow, while static pressures were recorded via floor tappings. The results indicate that an interplay occurs between the corner flow and the centre line flow. It is believed that corner flow separation acts to induce a shock bifurcation, which in turn leads to a smearing of the adverse pressure gradient elsewhere. In addition the blockage effect from the corners was seen to result in a reacceleration of the subsonic post-shock flow. As a result manipulation of the corner regions allows a separated or attached centre line flow to be observed at the same Mach number. Copyright © 2010 by Babinsky, Burton, Bruce.

This study was aimed to analyze the annual reproductive cycle of the freshwater crab Paratelphusa spinigera (Wood Mason, 1871). P. spinigera breeds only once in a year; hence, it is a monovoltine species. Gonad maturation, changes in abdomen shape, size and female maturity index (FMI) marked the onset of sexual maturity of female P. spinigera. The occurrence of berried females marked the onset of breeding season. The fecundity of P. spinigera ranged from 533 to 1306 in number, with an average of 699.11 ± 217.38. The correlation of fecundity with carapace width and body weight was also found to be positively significant (r = 0. 780 and 0.933, respectively). The eggs were carried on the pleopods and nurtured for approximately 30-35 days, until the eggs hatch, showing perfect maternal care. The FMI values ranging between 0.70 and 0.80 represented immature stage of gonadal development. When the FMI ranged from 0.91 to 1.00, all stages of gonadal development, i.e. developing, maturing and mature stages were observed. The females with fully ripe ovary had FMI values greater than 1.00.

Kalyani lake (P sub(1)), a weed infested recreational water body and a weed chocked derelict water body (P sub(2)) in the heart of Kalyani city of West Bengal were studied for a period of one year for their primary productivity and other physicochemical parameters. Very low primary productivity (GPP=360-1237mg C m super(-2) d super(-1); NPP=157-787 mg C m super(-2) d super(-1)) was recorded in P sub(2) in spite of having a high concentration of nutrients (PO sub(4)–P=0.052-0.260mg l super(- 1); NO sub(3)-N=0.110-0.412mg l super(-1)). On the other hand, moderate primary productivity (GPP=1687-3195mg C m super(-2) d super(-1); NPP=900-2700mg C m super(-2) d super(-1)) was found in P sub(1) with comparatively low range of nutrients (P0 sub(4)-P =0.010-0.058mg l super(-1); NO sub(3)-N=0.032-0.118mg l super(-1)). After studying the other physicochemical parameters (temperature, transparency, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, pH, alkalinity and macrophytic biomass), it was found that the overall hydro-biological conditions of the weed-chocked derelict water body (P sub(2)) is not congenial for biological production as compared to Kalyani Lake (P sub(1)). Kalyani Lake may be used for fish culture with proper management practices.
