Ultrasonic transducers have often been used in the development of sensory systems for robotics applications. In most cases, these sensory systems are based on the determination of times of flight for signals from every transducer. In this work we have used piezoresistive and piezoelectric materials to measure the instant and position collision in metallic structures by using the difference of the times of propagation of an acoustic wave when it is produced over a ferromagnetic (iron, steel or another material) based structure. An immediate application of the proposed method is the detection and location of impacts over the metallic links of an industrial robot or the collision position in a metallic structure for an automated inspection

ABSTRACT The aim of the vibration study is to set a security band to protect the Spanish high speed train (AVE) which goes Madrid-Vitoria-San Sebastian (section Andoain- Urnieta). The data gathered has made possible the calculation of absorption laws of propagation of vibrating waves, that allow the prediction of the magnitude created at a certain distance of the detonation of a known explosive. In addition, an analysis of the energy concentrations that could appear during a blasting in different sequences is made. With this method based on the firing of a seed drill with similar load and boot conditions of a common production drill, is intended to highlight the importance of the frequency range in the process of vibrations transmission and generation in the field, and consequently the importance in the structures protection criteria against these vibrations.

It is very often the case that programs require passing, maintaining, and updating some notion of state. Prolog programs often implement such stateful computations by carrying this state in predicate arguments (or, alternatively, in the internal datábase). This often causes code obfuscation, complicates code reuse, introduces dependencies on the data model, and is prone to incorrect propagation of the state information among predicate calis. To partly solve these problems, we introduce contexts as a consistent mechanism for specifying implicit arguments and its threading in clause goals. We propose a notation and an interpretation for contexts, ranging from single goals to complete programs, give an intuitive semantics, and describe a translation into standard Prolog. We also discuss a particular light-weight implementation in Ciao Prolog, and we show the usefulness of our proposals on a series of examples and applications, including code directiy using contexts, DCGs, extended DCGs, logical loops and other custom control structures.

ABSTRACT The studies carried out so far for the determination of the quality of measurement of geodetic instruments have been aimed, primarily, to measure angles and distances. However, in recent years it has been accepted to use GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) equipment in the field of Geomatic applications, for data capture, without establishing a methodology that allows obtaining the calibration correction and its uncertainty. The purpose of this Thesis is to establish the requirements that a network must meet to be considered a StandardNetwork with metrological traceability, as well as the methodology for the verification and calibration of GNSS instrumental in those standard networks. To do this, a technical calibration procedure has been designed, developed and defined for GNSS equipment determining the contributions to the uncertainty of measurement. The procedure, which has been applied in different networks for different equipment, has alloweddetermining the expanded uncertainty of such equipment following the recommendations of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement of the Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology. In addition, the three-dimensional coordinates of the bases which constitute the networks considered in the investigationhave been determined by satellite-based techniques. There have been several developed simulations based on different values of experimental standard deviations of the fixed points that have been used in the least squares vectors or base lines calculations. The results have shown the importance that the knowledge of experimental standard deviations has in the calculation of uncertainties of the three-dimensional coordinates of the bases. Based on high technical quality studies and observations carried out in these networks previously, it has been possible to make an exhaustive analysis that has allowed determining the requirements that a standard network must meet. In addition, technical calibration procedures have been developed to allow the uncertainty estimation of measurement carried outby geodetic instruments that provide angles and distances obtained by electromagnetic methods. These instruments provide the metrological traceability to standard networks used for verification and calibration of GNSS equipment. As a result, it has been possible the estimation of local calibration corrections for high accuracy GNSS equipment in standardnetworks. In this Thesis, the uncertainty of calibration correction has been calculated using two different methodologies: the first one by applying the law of propagation of uncertainty, while the second has applied the propagation of distributions using the Monte Carlo method. The analysis of the obtained results confirms the validity of both methodologies for estimating the calibration uncertainty of GNSS equipment.

Abstract This Doctoral Thesis approach the study of some non-destructive techniques as a classification method for structural use of Scots pine wood of Spanish origin with large cross section. To estimate the modulus of elasticity and strength have been used techniques based on the propagation of a wave through the timber: ultrasonic wave (Sylvatest) or stress wave (Microsecond Timer) in longitudinal direction, or vibration in longitudinal and transversal direction (PLG). Local probing methods have been applied to estimate the density, based on penetrometer (Pilodyn) and the screw withdrawal resistance meter. The different variables obtained were compared with the results of the visual grading and the values of the properties of the wood determined by the standardized test of the pieces. Furthermore, the influence of the moisture content of the wood on the velocity of propagation of the waves through the timber has been analyzed in order to establish a correction factor for the commercial devices used in this Doctoral Thesis. The sample tested consists of 244 pieces from El Espinar, Segovia, with nominal dimensions 150 x 200 x 4000 mm (218 pieces) and 100 x 150 x 3000 mm (26 pieces). Data collection about dimensions, moisture content and visual grading according to the UNE 56544 standard were carried out on all the pieces. The first 218 pieces were tested by non destructive techniques based on ultrasonic wave, stress wave and vibration, the density was measured on each piece and bending test according to the UNE-EN 408 standard was carried out for calculating the global modulus of elasticity (all the pieces) and the local one (only a representative group), as well as the bending strength. Three slices were removed for implementing the local probing and to calculate the density. In the other 26 pieces the tests (wave transmission, vibration and visual grading) were repeated during the natural drying process, from wet timber (around 40 % moisture content) up to the equilibrium moisture content (around 9%). Regarding the visual grading no significant differences were observed between MEG or rejected pieces. The effects of drying (deformations) have been studied, and justification for the specification hasn't been found. To estimate the density, the greater R2 obtained was 47% by using both penetrometer and screw withdrawal. For the modulus of elasticity and bending strength, the best relationship has been found with the longitudinal vibration, with coefficients of 79% and 52% respectively. It has been estimated that an increase of a point of the moisture content of the wood produces a decrease on the velocity obtained from ultrasonic or stress wave of 0,58%, and 0,71 % for the one obtained from vibration. Those values can be generalized for a range of moisture content from 9 to 25 %.

The study of the cross-talk and its effects in the performance of a matrix array of piezoelectric elements is an important issue. This corresponds to the study of the cross mode of vibration of each one of the piezoelectric elements that form the ultrasonic array. The aim is to detect and measure the cross-talk that is generated for the cross mode of vibration. In order to accomplish this task, an array of 2x3 elements was designed and developed. This was constructed using 8 MHz piezoelectric ceramics. A number of configurations have been experimented, considering the excitation of an increasing number of elements, in order to detect and measure the propagation of wave interference. Initial results show the way cross-talk interferes the beam generated by the array, this causing attenuation of the main beam and other negative effects.

The Linearized Auto-Localization (LAL) algorithm estimates the position of beacon nodes in Local Positioning Systems (LPSs), using only the distance measurements to a mobile node whose position is also unknown. The LAL algorithm calculates the inter-beacon distances, used for the estimation of the beacons’ positions, from the linearized trilateration equations. In this paper we propose a method to estimate the propagation of the errors of the inter-beacon distances obtained with the LAL algorithm, based on a first order Taylor approximation of the equations. Since the method depends on such approximation, a confidence parameter τ is defined to measure the reliability of the estimated error. Field evaluations showed that by applying this information to an improved weighted-based auto-localization algorithm (WLAL), the standard deviation of the inter-beacon distances can be improved by more than 30% on average with respect to the original LAL method.

The derivative nonlinear Schrodinger DNLS equation, describing propagation of circularly polarized Alfven waves of finite amplitude in a cold plasma, is truncated to explore the coherent, weakly nonlinear, cubic coupling of three waves near resonance, one wave being linearly unstable and the other waves damped. In a reduced three-wave model equal dampings of daughter waves, three-dimensional flow for two wave amplitudes and one relative phase, no matter how small the growth rate of the unstable wave there exists a parametric domain with the flow exhibiting chaotic relaxation oscillations that are absent for zero growth rate. This hard transition in phase-space behavior occurs for left-hand LH polarized waves, paralleling the known fact that only LH time-harmonic solutions of the DNLS equation are modulationally unstable, with damping less than about unstable wave frequency 2/4 x ion cyclotron frequency. The structural stability of the transition was explored by going into a fully 3-wave model different dampings of daughter waves,four-dimensional flow; both models differ in significant phase-space features but keep common features essential for the transition.

The constant development of digital systems in radio communications demands the adaptation of the current receiving equipment to the new technologies. In this context, a new Software Defined Radio based receiver is being implemented with the aim of carrying out different experiments to analyze the propagation of signals through the atmosphere from a satellite beacon. The receiver selected for this task is the PERSEUS SDR from the Italian company Microtelecom s.r.l. It is a software defined VLF-LF-MF-HF receiver based on an outstanding direct sampling digital architecture which features a 14 bit 80 MSamples/s analog-to-digital converter, a high-performance FPGA-based digital down-converter and a high-speed 480 Mbit/s USB2.0 PC interface. The main goal is to implement the related software and adapt the new receiver to the current working environment. In this paper, SDR technology guidelines are given and PERSEUS receiver digital signal processing is presented with the most remarkable results.

Los resultados obtenidos mejoran los de soluciones anteriores simplificando también el tiempo de cálculo = The subject of this paper is the modelling of singularities in potential problems, using the Boundary Integral Equation Method. As a logical alternative to classical methods (discretization refinement, asymptotic analysis, high order interpolatory functions) a new hypothesis is presented: the singularity responsible term is included in the interpolatory shape function. As shown by several exemples results are splendid and computer time radically shortened.

On the basis of the BBGKY hierarchy of equations an expression is derived for the response of a fully ionized plasma to a strong, high-frequency electric field in the limit of infinite ion mass. It is found that even in this limit the ionion correlation function is substantially affected by the field. The corrections to earlier nonlinear results for the current density appear to be quite ssential. The validity of the model introduced by Dawson and Oberman to study the response to a vanishingly small field is confirmed for larger values of the field when the eorrect expression for the ion-ion correlations i s introduced; the model by itself does not yield such an expression. The results have interest for the heating of the plasma and for the propagation of a strong electromagnetic wave through the plasma. The theory seems to be valid for any field intensity for which the plasma is stable.
