The compositional evolution in sputter deposited LiCoO(2) thin films is influenced by process parameters involved during deposition. The electrochemical performance of these films strongly depends on their microstructure, preferential orientation and stoichiometry. The transport process of sputtered Li and Co atoms from the LiCoO(2) target to the substrate, through Ar plasma in a planar magnetron configuration, was investigated based on the Monte Carlo technique. The effect of sputtering gas pressure and the substrate-target distance (d(st)) on Li/Co ratio, as well as, energy and angular distribution of sputtered atoms on the substrate were examined. Stable Li/Co ratios have been obtained at 5 Pa pressure and d(st) in the range 5 11 cm. The kinetic energy and incident angular distribution of Li and Co atoms reaching the substrate have been found to be dependent on sputtering pressure. Simulations were extended to predict compositional variations in films prepared at various process conditions. These results were compared with the composition of films determined experimentally using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Li/Co ratio calculated using XPS was in moderate agreement with that of the simulated value. The measured film thickness followed the same trend as predicted by simulation. These studies are shown to be useful in understanding the complexities in multicomponent sputtering. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3597829]

Noble metal ion substituted CeO(2) in the form of Ce(0.98)M(0.02)O(2-delta) solid solution (where M = Pt, Pd, Cu) are the new generation catalysts with applications in three-way exhaust catalysis. While adsorption of CO on noble metals ions is well-known, adsorption of CO on noble metal ions has not been studied because creating exclusive ionic sites has been difficult. Using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) we have shown that CO gets adsorbed on the noble metal Pt(2+), Pd(2+), Cu(2+) ionic sites in the respective compounds, and the net energy of the overall system decreases. Adsorption of CO on metal ions is also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

In this study, bulk and multifoil diffusion couple experiments were conducted to examine the interdiffusion process in Ni-Pt and Co-Pt binary alloy systems. Inter-, intrinsic-, and tracer-diffusion coefficients at different temperatures, and as a function of the composition, were estimated by using the experimental data. Results show that in both the alloy systems, Pt is the slower diffusing species, and hence the interdiffusion process is controlled by either Ni or Co. The thermodynamic driving force makes the intrinsic diffusion coefficients of Co and Ni higher in the range of 30-70 at.%. The low activation energy for Co and Ni impurity diffusion in Pt compared with Pt in Ni and Co indicates that the size of the atoms plays an important role. The vacancy wind effects on the diffusion process are examined in detail, and it was demonstrated that its contribution falls within the experimental scatter and hence can be neglected.

The tie-lines delineating equilibria between CoO-NiO and Co-Ni solid solutions in the ternary Co-Ni-O system at 1373 K have been determined by electron microprobe andedax point count analysis of the oxide phase equilibrated with the alloy. The oxygen potentials corresponding to the tie-line compositions have been measured using a solid oxide galvanic cell with calcia-stabilized zirconia electrolyte and Ni + NiO reference electrode. Activities in the metallic and oxide solid solution have been derived using a new Gibbs-Duhem integration technique. Both phases exhibit small positive deviations from ideality; the values ofG E/X 1 X 2 are 2640 J mol−1 for the metallic phase and 2870 J mol−1 for the oxide solid solution.

The tie-lines delineating equilibria between CoF2-NiF2 and Co-Ni solid solutions in the ternary Co-Ni-F system at 1373 K have been determined by electron microprobe and EDAX point count analysis of the equilibrated phases. Activities in the fluoride solid solution have been derived from the knowledge of activitycomposition relation in the metallic solid solution and tie-line data, using a modified form of the Gibbs-Duhem integration. The fluorine potentials corresponding to the tie-line compositions have been calculated. The excess Gibbs' energy of mixing for the fluoride solid solution derived from the present data can be represented by the expression

We present numerical studies of a model for CO oxidation on the surface of Pt(110) proposed in Ref. 1. The model shows several interesting regimes, some of which exhibit spatiotemporal chaos. The time series of the CO concentration at a given point consists of a sequence of pulses. We concentrate on interpulse intervals theta and show that their distribution P(theta) approaches a delta function continuously as the system goes from a state M, with meandering spirals, to a state S, with spatially frozen spiral cores. This should be verifiable experimentally.

The idea of a structural landscape is based on the fact that a large number of crystal structures can be associated with a particular organic molecule. Taken together, all these structures constitute the landscape. The landscape includes polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs and solvates. Under certain circumstances, it may also include multicomponent crystals (or co-crystals) that contain the reference molecule as one of the components. Under still other circumstances, the landscape may include the crystal structures of molecules that are closely related to the reference molecule. The idea of a landscape is to facilitate the understanding of the process of crystallization. It includes all minima that can, in principle, be accessed by the molecule in question as it traverses the path from solution to the crystal. Isonicotinamide is a molecule that is known to form many co-crystals. We report here a 2 : 1 co-crystal of this amide with 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid, wherein an unusual N-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen-bonded pattern is observed. This crystal structure offers some hints about the recognition processes between molecules that might be implicated during crystallization. Also included is a review of other recent results that illustrate the concept of the structural landscape.

Droplet collision occurs frequently in regions where the droplet number density is high. Even for Lean Premixed and Pre-vaporized (LPP) liquid sprays, the collision effects can be very high on the droplet size distributions, which will in turn affect the droplet vaporization process. Hence, in conjunction with vaporization modeling, collision modeling for such spray systems is also essential. The standard O'Rourke's collision model, usually implemented in CFD codes, tends to generate unphysical numerical artifact when simulations are performed on Cartesian grid and the results are not grid independent. Thus, a new collision modeling approach based on no-time-counter method (NTC) proposed by Schmidt and Rutland is implemented to replace O'Rourke's collision algorithm to solve a spray injection problem in a cylindrical coflow premixer. The so called ``four-leaf clover'' numerical artifacts are eliminated by the new collision algorithm and results from a diesel spray show very good grid independence. Next, the dispersion and vaporization processes for liquid fuel sprays are simulated in a coflow premixer. Two liquid fuels under investigation are jet-A and Rapeseed Methyl Esters (RME). Results show very good grid independence in terms of SMD distribution, droplet number distribution and fuel vapor mass flow rate. A baseline test is first established with a spray cone angle of 90 degrees and injection velocity of 3 m/s and jet-A achieves much better vaporization performance than RME due to its higher vapor pressure. To improve the vaporization performance for both fuels, a series of simulations have been done at several different combinations of spray cone angle and injection velocity. At relatively low spray cone angle and injection velocity, the collision effect on the average droplet size and the vaporization performance are very high due to relatively high coalescence rate induced by droplet collisions. Thus, at higher spray cone angle and injection velocity, the results expectedly show improvement in fuel vaporization performance since smaller droplet has a higher vaporization rate. The vaporization performance and the level of homogeneity of fuel-air mixture can be significantly improved when the dispersion level is high, which can be achieved by increasing the spray cone angle and injection velocity. Nb is one of the common refractory elements added in Ni, Co and Fe based superalloys. This lead to the formation of brittle topological close packed (tcp) mu phase, which is deleterious to the structure. It mainly grows by interdiffusion and in the present article, the interdiffusion process in different Nb-X (X=Ni, Co, Fe) systems is discussed. The activation energy for interdiffusion is lower in the Co-Nb system (173 kJ/mol) than Fe-Nb system (233 kJ/mol), which is again lower than the value found in the Ni-Nb system (319.7 kJ/mol). The mole fraction of Nb in this phase is less than Fe or Co at stoichiometric compositions in the Nb-Fe (that is Fe7Nb6) and Nb-Co (that is Co7Nb6) systems. On the other hand, the mole fraction of Nb is higher than Ni in the same phase (Ni6Nb2) in Ni-Nb system. However, in all the phases, Nb has lower diffusion rate. Possible diffusion mechanism in this phase is discussed with respect to the crystal structure.

Mobile P2P technology provides a scalable approach for content delivery to a large number of users on their mobile devices. In this work, we study the dissemination of a single item of content (e. g., an item of news, a song or a video clip) among a population of mobile nodes. Each node in the population is either a destination (interested in the content) or a potential relay (not yet interested in the content). There is an interest evolution process by which nodes not yet interested in the content (i.e., relays) can become interested (i.e., become destinations) on learning about the popularity of the content (i.e., the number of already interested nodes). In our work, the interest in the content evolves under the linear threshold model. The content is copied between nodes when they make random contact. For this we employ a controlled epidemic spread model. We model the joint evolution of the copying process and the interest evolution process, and derive joint fluid limit ordinary differential equations. We then study the selection of parameters under the content provider's control, for the optimization of various objective functions that aim at maximizing content popularity and efficient content delivery.
