SETTING: A tertiary care research centre in Sao Paolo, Brazil. OBJECTIVE: To quantify interleukin (IL) 8, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor beta(1), (TGF-beta(1))in pleural fluid from tuberculous patients, correlating its values with the histopathological patterns in pleural biopsies. DESIGN: Cytokines were quantified in patients with transudatcs secondary to congestive heart failure (n = 8) and exudates secondary to tuberculosis (TB; n = 39). In parietal pleural biopsies from TB patients, the histological patterns of the inflammatory response were quantified by morphometric analysis (stereological point-counting method). RESULTS: IL-8, TNF-alpha, VEGF and TGF-beta(1) levels were higher in TB than in transudates. A positive correlation existed between components of the fibrinoid exudative phase with pleural fluid IL-8 (R = 0.52, P = 0.004) and VEGF (R = 0.42, P = 0.0021) levels. A negative correlation existed between pleural fluid IL-8 (R = -0.37, P = 0.048) and VEGF (R = -0.44, P = 0.0015) levels with tissue components of fibroproliferation. CONCLUSION: The high pleural levels of TNF-a, IL-8, VEGF and TGF-beta(1) suggest the involvement of these cytokines in the TB immunological response. The positive correlation between pleural fluid IL-8 and VEGF with the components of the acute exudative phase and the negative correlation between these cytokines with the fibroproliferative components suggest a temporary inflammatory response in the pleural space.

This work reports the first ultrastructural investigation into the degradation process that starch granules isolated from bananas (cv. Nanicao) undergo during ripening. Starch granules from green bananas had a smooth surface, while granules from ripe bananas were more elongated with parallel striations, as revealed by CSLM and SEM. AFM images revealed that the first layer covering the granule surface is composed of a hard material and, as degradation proceeds, hard and soft regions seem to be repeated at regular intervals. WAXD patterns of banana starches were C-type, and the crystalline index was reduced during ripening. The B-/A-type ratio was increased, indicating the preferential degradation of the A-type allomorph. The branch-chain length distribution showed predominantly short chains of amylopectin (A and B1-chain). The fa/fb ratio was reduced during degradation, while amylose content was increased. The results allowed a detailed understanding of the changes that starch granules undergo during banana ripening. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Queiroz BC, Cagliari MF, Amorim CF, Sacco IC. Muscle activation during four Pilates core stability exercises in quadruped position. Arch Phys Med Rehabil 2010;91: 86-92. Objective: To compare the activity of stabilizing trunk and hip muscles in 4 variations of Pilates stabilizing exercises in the quadruped position. Design: Repeated-measures descriptive study. Setting: A biomechanics laboratory at a university school of medicine. Participants: Healthy subjects (N=19; mean age +/- SD, 31 +/- 5y; mean weight +/- SD, 60 +/- 11 kg; mean height +/- SD, 166 +/- 9cm) experienced in Pilates routines. Interventions: Surface electromyographic signals of iliocostalis, multifidus, gluteus maximus, rectus abdominis, and external and internal oblique muscles were recorded in 4 knee stretch exercises: retroverted pelvis with flexed trunk; anteverted pelvis with extended trunk; neutral pelvis with inclined trunk; and neutral pelvis with trunk parallel to the ground. Main Outcome Measures: Root mean square values of each muscle and exercise in both phases of hip extension and flexion, normalized by the maximal voluntary isometric contraction. Results: The retroverted pelvis with flexed trunk position led to significantly increased external oblique and gluteus maximus muscle activation. The anteverted pelvis with trunk extension significantly increased multifidus muscle activity. The neutral pelvis position led to significantly lower activity of all muscles. Rectus abdominis muscle activation to maintain body posture was similar in all exercises and was not influenced by position of the pelvis and trunk. Conclusions: Variations in the pelvic and trunk positions in the knee stretch exercises change the activation pattern of the multifidus, gluteus maximus, rectus abdominis, and oblique muscles. The lower level of activation of the rectus abdominis muscle suggests that pelvic stability is maintained in the 4 exercise positions.

We investigated the analgesic effects of unilateral repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the motor cortex (M1) or dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in two models of experimental pain in healthy volunteers. Two studies were carried out in parallel in two groups of 26 paid healthy volunteers. The effects of active or sham rTMS (frequency, 10 Hz; intensity, 80% resting motor threshold) applied to the right M1 or DLPFC were compared in a double-blind randomized cross-over design. In the first series of experiments, we analyzed the effects of rTMS on thermal (heat and cold) detection and pain thresholds measured on both hands and the left foot, by standardized quantitative sensory testing methods. In the second series of experiments, we measured the effects of M1 or DLPFC rTMS on the threshold and recruitment curves of the RIII nociceptive reflex evoked by ipsilateral electrical stimulation of the sural nerve and recorded on the biceps femoris of both lower limbs. In both studies, measurements were taken before and up to 60 min after the end of rTMS. Active rTMS of both M1 and DLPFC significantly increased the thermal pain thresholds, measured for both hands and the left foot, this effect being most marked for cold pain. These effects, which lasted at least 1 h after rTMS, were selective because they were not associated with changes in non-painful thermal sensations. By contrast, the second study showed that rTMS of M1 or DLPFC had no significant effect on the threshold or recruitment curve of the nociceptive flexion RIII reflex. Our findings demonstrate that unilateral rTMS of M1 or DLPFC induces diffuse and selective analgesic effects in healthy volunteers. The lack of effect on the RIII reflex suggests that such analgesic effects may not depend on the activation of descending inhibitory systems. (C) 2009 International Association for the Study of Pain. Different banana cultivars were used to investigate the influences of starch granule structure and hydrolases on degradation. The highest degrees of starch degradation were observed in dessert bananas during ripening. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed smooth granule surface in the green stage in all cultivars, except for Mysore. The small and round granules were preferentially degraded in all of the cultivars. Terra demonstrated a higher degree of crystallinity and a short amylopectin chain length distribution, resulting in high starch content in the ripe stage. Amylose content and the crystallinity index were more strongly correlated than the distribution of amylopectin branch chain lengths in banana starches. alpha- and beta-amylase activities were found in both forms, soluble in the pulp and associated with the starch granule. Starch-phosphorylase was not found in Mysore. On the basis of the profile of alpha-amylase in vitro digestion and the structural characteristics, it could be concluded that the starch of plantains has an arrangement of granules more resistant to enzymes than the starch of dessert bananas.

This study investigated the effects of bromazepam on qEEG when 14 healthy subjects were asked to perform a visuomotor task (i.e., motor vehicle driving task). The subjects were exposed to two experimental conditions: the placebo (PL) and 6 mg of bromazepam (Br 6 mg), following a randomized, double-blind design on different days. Specifically, we observe absolute power extracted from qEEG data for theta band. We expected to see a decrease in absolute theta power in the temporal and parietal areas due to the influence of bromazepam for the experimental group when compared with the placebo group. We found a main effect for the condition factor for electrodes T3, T4, P3 and P4. We also observed a main effect for the period factor for electrodes P3 and P4. We observed that the ingestion of 6 mg of bromazepam induces different patterns in theta power at the temporal and parietal sites. We concluded that 6 mg of bromazepam was an important factor in the fluctuation of the activities in the temporal and parietal areas. We then hypothesize about the specific role of this drug during the execution of a visuomotor task and within the sensorimotor integration process. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
