In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the 1- and 5-site models of methane on the description of adsorption on graphite surfaces and in graphitic slit pores. These models have been known to perform well in the description of the fluid-phase behavior and vapor-liquid equilibria. Their performance in adsorption is evaluated in this work for nonporous graphitized thermal carbon black, and simulation results are compared with the experimental data of Avgul and Kiselev (Chemistry and Physics of Carbon; Dekker: New York, 1970; Vol. 6, p 1). On this nonporous surface, it is found that these models perform as well on isotherms at various temperatures as they do on the experimental isosteric heat for adsorption on a graphite surface. They are then tested for their performance in predicting the adsorption isotherms in graphitic slit pores, in which we would like to explore the effect of confinement on the molecule packing. Pore widths of 10 and 20 angstrom are chosen in this investigation, and we also study the effects of temperature by choosing 90.7, 113, and 273 K. The first two are for subcritical conditions, with 90.7 K being the triple point of methane and 113 K being its boiling point. The last temperature is chosen to represent the supercritical condition so that we can investigate the performance of these models at extremely high pressures. We have found that for the case of slit pores investigated in this paper, although the two models yield comparable pore densities (provided the accessible pore width is used in the calculation of pore density), the number of particles predicted by the I-site model is always greater than that predicted by the 5-site model, regardless of whether temperature is subcritical or supercritical. This is due to the packing effect in the confined space such that a methane molecule modeled as a spherical particle in the I-site model would pack better than the fused five-sphere model in the case of the 5-site model. Because the 5-site model better describes the liquid- and solid-phase behavior, we would argue that the packing density in small pores is better described with a more detailed 5-site model, and care should be exercised when using the 1-site model to study adsorption in small pores.

The free-ion model (FIM) describes iron ( Fe) uptake by barley [ Hordeum vulgare ( L.) 'Grammett'] as being controlled by the activity of the buffered, free, uncomplexed Fe3+ in solution. Chelators' effect on Fe uptake by barley was evaluated and the rate of exchange of Fe between chelators was examined. Barley was grown for two weeks in a low-Fe nutrient solution and transferred to solutions varying in Fe and chelators for 6 h assays. Shoot Fe-59 was higher in barley grown in citrate (7743 and 1928 Fe-59 Bq g(-1)) than in NTA(3220 and 1113 Fe-59 Bq g(-1); P = 0.045) despite similar free-Fe3+ activities. A comparison of Fe uptake by barley from solutions with pFe(3+) activities of 17.1 and 24.6 showed < 5% was from indiscriminate apoplastic-flow uptake (3250 Fe-59 Bq g(-1) vs. 160 Fe-59 Bq g(-1)). Using nutrient solutions from the barley studies but without plants, Fe exchange between chelators and a simulant for the barley phytosiderophore occurred within hours ( for NTA and citrate), or days ( EDTA and HEDTA). Results were similar between the barley and Fe-exchange experiments for the two nutrient-solution treatments where the same Fe3+ activities but different total-Fe concentrations were used: the higher total-Fe treatment resulted in six-fold higher shoot Fe-59, while in the Fe-exchange study that treatment had six-fold more Fe bound to the phytosiderophore simulant after 2 d. Results indicated deviations from the FIM were not explained by indiscriminate-flow uptake, and that sluggish Fe-exchange reactions between chelate and phytosiderophoresimulant, not FIM guidelines, may be more important in explaining Fe uptake from synthetic chelates by Fe-deficient barley.

The effects of free ammonia (FA; NH3) and free nitrous acid (FNA; HNO2) concentrations on the metabolisms of an enriched ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) culture were investigated using a method allowing the decoupling of growth and energy generation processes. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated for the enrichment of an AOB culture. Fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) analysis showed that 82% of the bacterial population in the SBR bound to the NEU probe specifically designed for Nitrosomonas europaea. Batch tests were carried out to measure the oxygen and ammonium consumption rates by the culture at various FA and FNA levels, in the presence or absence of inorganic carbon (CO2, HCO3, and CO32-). It was revealed that FA of up to 16.0 mgNH(3)-N (.) L-1, which was the highest concentration used in this study, did not have any inhibitory effect on either the catabolic or anabolic processes of the Nitrosomonas culture. In contrast, FNA inhibited both the growth and energy production capabilities of the Nitrosomonas culture. The inhibition on growth initiated at approximately 0.10 mgHNO(2)-(NL-1)-L-., and the data suggested that the biosynthesis was completely stopped at an FNA concentration of 0.40 mgHNO(2)-N (.) L-1. The inhibition on energy generation initiated at a slightly lower level but the Nitrosomonas culture was still oxidizing ammonia at half of the maximum rate at an FNA concentration of 0.50-0.63 mgHNO(2)-N (.) L-1. The affinity constant of the Nitrosomonas culture with respect to ammonia was determined to be 0.36 mgNH3-N (.) L-1, independent of the presence or absence of inorganic carbon. This paper reports a study on nanostructured magnesium composites with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and catalytic transition metals with high H-2 adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetics at reduced hydrogenation temperatures. Nanostructures in such a composite are shown to be responsible for improvements in both adsorption capacity and kinetics. It is found that the carbon nanotubes significantly increase the hydrogen storage capacity, and the catalytic transition metals (Fe and Ti) greatly improve the kinetics. This could be understood from the enhancement of diffusion by CNTs and decrease in energy barrier of hydrogen dissociation at the magnesium surface.

The modern rhetoric of reform in education has been in the forefront since the 1980s, but it has now taken on a new meaning, a greater importance to both students and teachers, a new urgency for change, and a sense of hope that this time reform will truly make a difference. The major purpose of this study was to compare historical reform initiatives to the current Florida state initiative, Blueprint 2000: A System of School Improvement and Accountability.^ Five questions were considered: (1) how similar were historical and current reform initiatives; (2) what aspects of reform were actually accomplished; (3) what are the elements of a profession; (4) what implications might this research have for university programs and inservice training programs regarding their role in the preparation of teachers; and, (5) what implications might research have on the promotion of professional practice. ^

This paper discusses the urban consumer culture in Moscow and Petersburg during the 1880s and 1890s and uses the consumption of bicycles and watches as a lens through which to explore changing perceptions of time and space within the experience of modernity at the end of the nineteenth century. Specifically, I argue that the way in which consumers and merchants constructed a dialogue of meaning around particular objects; the way in which objects are consumed by a culture gives insight into the values, morals, and tenure of that culture. The paper preferences newspaper ads and photographs as the mouthpieces of merchants and consumers respectively as they constructed a dialogue in the language of consumerism, and explores the ways in which both parties sought to assign meaning to objects during the experience of modernity. I am particularly interested in the way consumers perform elements of cultural modernity in photographs and how these instances of performance relate to their negotiation of modernity. The paper takes as its focus large section of the urban Russian population, much of whom can traditionally be called “middle class” but whose diversity has led me to the adoption of the term “consumer community,” and whose makeup is described in detail. The paper contributes to the continuing scholarly discourse on the makeup of the middle class in Russia and the social boundaries of late tsarist society. It speaks to the the developing sensibilities and values of a generation struggling to define itself in a rapidly changing world, to the ways in which conceptualizations of public and private space, as well as feminine and masculine space were redefined, and to the developing visual culture of the Russian consumer society, largely predicated on the display of objects to signify socially desirable traits. Whereas other explorations of consumer culture and advertisements have portrayed the relationship between merchants and consumers as a one-sided monologue in which merchants convince consumers that certain objects have cultural value, I emphasis the dialogue between merchants and consumers, and their mutual negotiation of cultural meaning through objects.

ABSTRACT The aim of improvement and the achievement of new goals is a constant process throughout the history of the architecture and engineering. The construction of increasingly daring, light and slender structures is a great example of this surmounting, but this track is not only related to the attainment of new structural and architectural shapes, but also to the pursuit of a higher economy of means and materials in its building process, and the particular case of steel grid shells makes no exception. The present doctoral dissertation addresses the field of lattice shells from a new viewpoint: the existing relationship between the insertion of a number of technological innovations in the industry and the formal evolution of this structural type, either referring to the complexity of the built surfaces as related to the elegance of the achieved load bearing grids. Within this aim this investigation outlines the characterization and classification of the prefabricated building systems used in the construction of steel trussed shells according to the influence of technology and industrial production processes used in its component fabrication, also considering the formal and aesthetic possibilities that the mentioned systems provide and the performance degree of raw material which its design and fabrication makes possible. In order to reach the proposed objective, this work develops an specific methodology which addresses the characterization of the different cases not only from an abstract and qualitative focus, based on the system properties, but also regarding the analysis of their real use in existing structures, being thus capable to quantify most of the parameters which are considered in this classification. By means of this methodology it has been possible to lay down the unambiguous relationship between the advances provided by the industry and the formal evolution of lattice shells, given the combination of technological innovation and the creative talent of designers – architects and engineers – in the pursuit of beauty. Furthermore, it has been determined how, in spite the astonishing advances that have been made, some issues in the design and fabrication of systems are still suitable to be optimized, addressing new research paths which may lead to the achievement of new designs suitable to drive the development of this structural type even further.
