An electrically tunable system for the control of optical pulse sequences is proposed and demonstrated. It is based on the use of an electrooptic modulator for periodic phase modulation followed by a dispersive device to obtain the temporal Talbot effect. The proposed configuration allows for repetition rate multiplication with different multiplication factors and with the simultaneous control of the pulse train envelope by simply changing the electrical signal driving the modulator. Simulated and experimental results for an input optical pulse train of 10 GHz are shown for different multiplication factors and envelope shapes.

The influence of nanosecond laser pulses applied by laser shock peening without absorbent coating (LSPwC) with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at a wavelength of λ = 1064 nm on 6082-T651 Al alloy has been investigated. The first portion of the present study assesses laser shock peening effect at two pulse densities on three-dimensional (3D) surface topography characteristics. In the second part of the study, the peening effect on surface texture orientation and micro-structure modification, i.e. the effect of surface craters due to plasma and shock waves, were investigated in both longitudinal (L) and transverse (T) directions of the laser-beam movement. In the final portion of the study, the changes of mechanical properties were evaluated with a residual stress profile and Vickers micro-hardness through depth variation in the near surface layer, whereas factorial design with a response surface methodology (RSM) was applied. The surface topographic and micro-structural effect of laser shock peening were characterised with optical microscopy, InfiniteFocus® microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Residual stress evaluation based on a hole-drilling integral method confirmed higher compression at the near surface layer (33 μm) in the transverse direction (σmin) of laser-beam movement, i.e. − 407 ± 81 MPa and − 346 ± 124 MPa, after 900 and 2500 pulses/cm2, respectively. Moreover, RSM analysis of micro-hardness through depth distribution confirmed an increase at both pulse densities, whereas LSPwC-generated shock waves showed the impact effect of up to 800 μm below the surface. Furthermore, ANOVA results confirmed the insignificant influence of LSPwC treatment direction on micro-hardness distribution indicating essentially homogeneous conditions, in both L and T directions.

Irradiation with swift heavy ions (SHI), roughly defined as those having atomic masses larger than 15 and energies exceeding 1 MeV/amu, may lead to significant modification of the irradiated material in a nanometric region around the (straight) ion trajectory (i.e., latent tracks). In the case of amorphous silica it has been reported that SHI irradiation originates nano-tracks of either higher density than the virgin material (for low electronic stopping powers, Se < 7 keV/nm) [1] or having a low-density core and a dense shell (Se > 12 keV/nm) [2]. The intermediate region has not been studied in detail but we will show in this work that essentially no changes in density occur in this zone. An interesting effect of the compaction is that the refractive index is increased with respect to that of the surroundings. In the first Se region it is clear that track overlapping leads to continuous amorphous layers that present a significant contrast with respect to the pristine substrate and this has been used to produce optical waveguides. The optical effects of intermediate and high stopping powers, on the other hand, are largely unknown so far. In this work we have studied theoretically (molecular dynamics and optical simulations) and experimentally (irradiation with SHI and optical characterization) the dependence of the macroscopic optical properties (i.e., the refractive index of the effective medium, n_EMA) on the electronic stopping power of the incoming ions. Our results show that the refractive index of the irradiated silica is not increased in the intermediate region, as expected; however, the core-shell tracks of the high-Se region produce a quite effective enhancement of n_EMA that could prove attractive for the fabrication of optical waveguides at ultralow fluences (as low as 1E11 cm^-2). 1. The effect of soiling in flat PV modules has been already studied, causing a reduction of the electrical output of 4% on average. For CPV's, as far as soiling produces light scattering at the optical collector surface, the scattered rays should be definitively lost because they cannot be focused onto the receivers again. While the theoretical study becomes difficult because soiling is variable at different sites, it becomes easier to begin the monitoring of the real field performance of concentrators and then raise the following question: how much does the soiling affect to PV concentrators in comparison with flat panels?? The answers allow to predict the PV concentrator electrical performance and to establish a pattern of cleaning frequency. Some experiments have been conducted at the IES-UPM and CSES-ANU sites, consisting in linear reflective concentration systems, a point focus refractive concentrator and a flat module. All the systems have been measured when soiled and then after cleaning, achieving different increases of ISC. In general, results show that CPV systems are more sensitive to soiling than flat panels, accumulating losses in ISC of about 14% on average in three different tests conducted at IESUPM and CSES-ANU test sites in Madrid (Spain) and Canberra (Australia). Some concentrators can reach losses up to 26% when the system is soiled for 4 months of exposure.

In this paper we propose to employ an instability that occurs in bistable devices as a control signal at the reception stage to generate the clock signal. One of the adopted configurations is composed of two semiconductor optical amplifiers arranged in a cascaded structure. This configuration has an output equivalent to that obtained from Self-Electrooptic Effect Devices (SEEDs), and it can implement the main Boolean functions of two binary inputs. These outputs, obtained from the addition of two binary signals, show a short spike in the transition from "1" to "2" in the internal processing. A similar result is obtained for a simple semiconductor amplifier with bistable behavior. The paper will show how these structures may help recover clock signals in any optical transmission system

On the basis of optical characterization experiments and an eight band kp model, we have studied the effect of Sb incorporation on the electronic structure of InAs quantum dots (QDs). We have found that Sb incorporation in InAs QDs shifts the hole wave function to the center of the QD from the edges of the QD where it is otherwise pinned down by the effects of shear stress. The observed changes in the ground-state energy cannot merely be explained by a composition change upon Sb exposure but can be accounted for when the change in lateral size is taken into consideration. The Sb distribution inside the QDs produces distinctive changes in the density of states, particularly, in the separation between excitation shells. We find a 50% increase in the thermal escape activation energy compared with reference InAs quantum dots as well as an increment of the fundamental transition decay time with Sb incorporation. Furthermore, we find that Sb incorporation into quantum dots is strongly nonlinear with coverage, saturating at low doses. This suggests the existence of a solubility limit of the Sb incorporation into the quantum dots during growth.

A simple and scalable chemical approach has been proposed for the generation of 1-dimensional nanostructures of two most important inorganic materials such as zinc oxide and cadmium sulfide. By controlling the growth habit of the nanostructures with manipulated reaction conditions, the diameter and uniformity of the nanowires/nanorods were tailored. We studied extensively optical behavior and structural growth of CdS NWs and ZnO NRs doped ferroelectric liquid crystal Felix-017/100. Due to doping band gap has been changed and several blue shifts occurred in photoluminescence spectra because of nanoconfinement effect and mobility of charges.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems have entailed a great enhancement in wireless communications performances. The use of multiple antennas at each side of the radio link has been included in recent drafts and standards such as WLAN, WIMAX, or DVB-T2. The MIMO performances depend on the antenna array characteristics and thus several aspects have to be taken into account to design MIMO antennas. In the literature, many articles can be found in terms of capacity or antenna design, but in this article, different types of antenna arrays for MIMO systems are measured in a reverberation chamber with and without a phantom as a user's head. As a result, the MIMO performances are degraded by the user in terms of efficiency, diversity gain, and capacity. Omnidirectional antennas such as monopoles with high radiation efficiency offer the highest performance for a rich scattering nonline of sight indoor environment.

In this article, a novel method to generate an ultra-wideband (UWB) doublet using the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The main component of the submitted architecture is a SOA-Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) pumped with a modulated Gaussian pulse. Maximum and minimum conversion points are analyzed through the systems transfer function in order to determinate the most effective operation stage. By tuning different values for the SOAs currents, it is possible to identify a conversion step in which the input pulse is enough large to saturate the SOAMZI, leading to the generation of a UWB doublet pulse.

Quaternary-ordered double perovskite A2MM’O6 (M=Mo,W) semiconductors are a group of materials with a variety of photocatalytic and optoelectronic applications. An analysis focused on the optoelectronic properties is carried out using first-principles density-functional theory with several U orbital-dependent one-electron potentials applied to different orbital subspaces. The structural non-equivalence of the atoms resulting from the symmetry has been taken in account. In order to analyze optical absorption in these materials deeply, the absorption coefficients have been split into inter- and intra-non-equivalent species contributions. The results indicate that the effect of the A and M’ atoms on the optical properties are minimal whereas the largest contribution comes from the non-equivalent O atoms to M transitions.

This paper reports on a case study of the impact of fabrication steps on InN material properties. We discuss the influence of annealing time and sequence of device processing steps. Photoluminescence (PL), surface morphology and electrical transport (electrical resistivity and low frequency noise) properties have been studied as responses to the adopted fabrication steps. Surface morphology has a strong correlation with annealing times, while sequences of fabrication steps do not appear to be influential. In contrast, the optical and electrical properties demonstrate correlation with both etching and thermal annealing. For all the studied samples PL peaks were in the vicinity of 0.7 eV, but the intensity and full width at half maximum (FWHM) demonstrate a dependence on the technological steps followed. Sheet resistance and electrical resistivity seem to be lower in the case of high defect introduction due to both etching and thermal treatments. The same effect is revealed through 1/f noise level measurements. A reduction of electrical resistivity is connected to an increase in 1/f noise level.

Optical filters are crucial elements in optical communications. The influence of cascaded filters in the optical signal will affect the communications quality seriously. In this paper we will study and simulate the optical signal impairment caused by different kinds of filters which include Butterworth, Bessel, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) and Fabry-Perot (FP). Optical signal impairment is analyzed from an Eye Opening Penalty (EOP) and optical spectrum point of view. The simulation results show that when the center frequency of all filters aligns with the laser’s frequency, the Butterworth has the smallest influence to the signal while the F-P has the biggest. With a -1dB EOP, the amount of cascaded Butterworth optical filters with a bandwidth of 50 GHz is 18 in 40 Gbps NRZ-DQPSK systems and 12 in 100 Gbps PMNRZ- DQPSK systems. The value is reduced to 9 and 6 respectively for Febry-Perot optical filters. In the situation of frequency misalignment, the impairment caused by filters is more serious. Our research shows that with a frequency deviation of 5 GHz, only 12 and 9 Butterworth optical filters can be cascaded in 40 Gbps NRZ-DQPSK and 100 Gbps PM-NRZ-DQPSK systems respectively. We also study the signal impairment caused by different orders of the Butterworth filter model. Our study shows that although the higher-order has a smaller clipping effect in the transmission spectrum, it will introduce a more serious phase ripple which seriously affects the signal. Simulation result shows that the 2nd order Butterworth filter has the best performance.

Ternary molybdates and tungstates ABO4 (A=Ca, Pb and B= Mo, W) are a group of materials that could be used for a variety of optoelectronic applications. We present a study of the optoelectronic properties based on first-principles using several orbitaldependent one-electron potentials applied to several orbital subspaces. The optical properties are split into chemical-species contributions in order to quantify the microscopic contributions. Furthermore, the effect of using several one-electron potentials and orbital subspaces is analyzed. From the results, the larger contribution to the optical absorption comes from the B-O transitions. The possible use as multi-gap solar cell absorbents is analyzed.

Optical filters are crucial elements in optical communication networks. Their influence toward the optical signal will affect the communication quality seriously. In this paper we will study and simulate the optical signal impairment and crosstalk penalty caused by different kinds of filters, which include Butterworth, Bessel, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) and Fabry-Perot (F-P). Signal impairment from filter concatenation effect and crosstalk penalty from out-band and in-band are analyzed from Q-penalty, eye opening penalty (EOP) and optical spectrum. The simulation results show that signal impairment and crosstalk penalty induced by the Butterworth filter is the minimum among these four types of filters. Signal impairment caused by filter concatenation effect shows that when center frequency of all filters is aligned perfectly with the laser's frequency, 12 50-GHz Butterworth filters can be cascaded, with 1-dB EOP. This value is reduced to 9 when the center frequency is misaligned with 5 GHz. In the 50-GHz channel spacing DWDM networks, total Q-penalty induced by a pair of Butterworth filters based demultiplexer and multiplexer is lower than 0.5 dB when the filter bandwidth is in the range of 42-46 GHz.
