The use of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) to optimise industrial energy systems is an approach which has the potential to positively impact on manufacturing sector energy efficiency. The need to obtain data to facilitate the implementation of a CPS in an industrial energy system is however a complex task which is often implemented in a non-standardised way. The use of the 5C CPS architecture has the potential to standardise this approach. This paper describes a case study where data from a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system located in a large manufacturing company was fused with grid electricity and gas models as well as a maintenance cost model using the 5C architecture with a view to making effective decisions on its cost efficient operation. A control change implemented based on the cognitive analysis enabled via the 5C architecture implementation has resulted in energy cost savings of over €7400 over a four-month period, with energy cost savings of over €150,000 projected once the 5C architecture is extended into the production environment.

The synthetic control method (SCM) is a new, popular method developed for the purpose of estimating the effect of an intervention when only one single unit has been exposed. Other similar, unexposed units are combined into a synthetic control unit intended to mimic the evolution in the exposed unit, had it not been subject to exposure. As the inference relies on only a single observational unit, the statistical inferential issue is a challenge. In this paper, we examine the statistical properties of the estimator, study a number of features potentially yielding uncertainty in the estimator, discuss the rationale for statistical inference in relation to SCM, and provide a Web-app for researchers to aid in their decision of whether SCM is powerful for a specific case study. We conclude that SCM is powerful with a limited number of controls in the donor pool and a fairly short pre-intervention time period. This holds as long as the parameter of interest is a parametric specification of the intervention effect, and the duration of post-intervention period is reasonably long, and the fit of the synthetic control unit to the exposed unit in the pre-intervention period is good.

Power-to-Gas storage systems have the potential to address grid-stability issues that arise when an increasing share of power is generated from sources that have a highly variable output. Although the proof-of-concept of these has been promising, the behaviour of the processes in off-design conditions is not easily predictable. The primary aim of this PhD project was to evaluate the performance of an original Power-to-Gas system, made up of innovative components. To achieve this, a numerical model has been developed to simulate the characteristics and the behaviour of the several components when the whole system is coupled with a renewable source. The developed model has been applied to a large variety of scenarios, evaluating the performance of the considered process and exploiting a limited amount of experimental data. The model has been then used to compare different Power-to-Gas concepts, in a real scenario of functioning. Several goals have been achieved. In the concept phase, the possibility to thermally integrate the high temperature components has been demonstrated. Then, the parameters that affect the energy performance of a Power-to-Gas system coupled with a renewable source have been identified, providing general recommendations on the design of hybrid systems; these parameters are: 1) the ratio between the storage system size and the renewable generator size; 2) the type of coupled renewable source; 3) the related production profile. Finally, from the results of the comparative analysis, it is highlighted that configurations with a highly oversized renewable source with respect to the storage system show the maximum achievable profit.

High Energy efficiency and high performance are the key regiments for Internet of Things (IoT) end-nodes. Exploiting cluster of multiple programmable processors has recently emerged as a suitable solution to address this challenge. However, one of the main bottlenecks for multi-core architectures is the instruction cache. While private caches fall into data replication and wasting area, fully shared caches lack scalability and form a bottleneck for the operating frequency. Hence we propose a hybrid solution where a larger shared cache (L1.5) is shared by multiple cores connected through a low-latency interconnect to small private caches (L1). However, it is still limited by large capacity miss with a small L1. Thus, we propose a sequential prefetch from L1 to L1.5 to improve the performance with little area overhead. Moreover, to cut the critical path for better timing, we optimized the core instruction fetch stage with non-blocking transfer by adopting a 4 x 32-bit ring buffer FIFO and adding a pipeline for the conditional branch. We present a detailed comparison of different instruction cache architectures' performance and energy efficiency recently proposed for Parallel Ultra-Low-Power clusters. On average, when executing a set of real-life IoT applications, our two-level cache improves the performance by up to 20% and loses 7% energy efficiency with respect to the private cache. Compared to a shared cache system, it improves performance by up to 17% and keeps the same energy efficiency. In the end, up to 20% timing (maximum frequency) improvement and software control enable the two-level instruction cache with prefetch adapt to various battery-powered usage cases to balance high performance and energy efficiency.

This PhD dissertation envisages the design of innovative power converters exploiting WBG devices to get state-of-the-art performance in products intended for industrial applications of automotive field. The collaborations with different specialized companies, provided the opportunity to access commercially-available state-of-the-art SiC and GaN technologies and the possibility to realize innovative converter prototypes. Concerning SiC technology, the complete design of a $350kW$ Battery Emulator instrument in collaboration with a company leader in the automotive testing sector, was carried out from scratch exploiting state-of-the-art SiC power-modules, planar magnetics and top-notch MCU technologies. Discrete high-voltage GaN switches were exploited in the Power Supplies design for automotive charger application to target improved performances compared to the market state-of-the-art. Specifically, two high-efficiency prototypes, an AC/DC converter and a DC/DC converter of $7.5kW$, have been realized for this purpose. To further investigate the characteristics of state-of-the-art GaN power devices two measurement set-ups have been designed. In particular, the trapping phenomenon causing the collapse of drain current during ON-state with a consequent degradation of ON-resistance has been analyzed.

Our objective for this thesis work was the deployment of a Neural Network based approach for video object detection on board a nano-drone. Furthermore, we have studied some possible extensions to exploit the temporal nature of videos to improve the detection capabilities of our algorithm. For our project, we have utilized the Mobilenetv2/v3SSDLite due to their limited computational and memory requirements. We have trained our networks on the IMAGENET VID 2015 dataset and to deploy it onto the nano-drone we have used the NNtool and Autotiler tools by GreenWaves. To exploit the temporal nature of video data we have tried different approaches: the introduction of an LSTM based convolutional layer in our architecture, the introduction of a Kalman filter based tracker as a postprocessing step to augment the results of our base architecture. We have obtain a total improvement in our performances of about 2.5 mAP with the Kalman filter based method(BYTE). Our detector run on a microcontroller class processor on board the nano-drone at 1.63 fps.

This study focused on the method known as lean production as a work-related psychosocial risk factor in a Brazilian multinational auto parts company after its merger with other multinational companies. The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of two time points: the first using on-site observation and key interviews with managers and workers during implementation of lean production in 1996; the second, 16 years later, comparing data from a document search in labor inspection records from the Ministry of Labor and Employment and legal proceedings initiated by the Office of the Public Prosecutor for Labor Affairs. The merger led to layoffs, replacements, and an increase in the workday. A class action suit was filed on grounds of aggravated working conditions. The new production model led to psychosocial risks that increased the need for workers' health precautions when changes in the production process introduced new and increased risks of physical and mental illnesses.

Urochloa humidicola is a warm-season grass commonly used as forage in the tropics and is recognized for its tolerance to seasonal flooding. This grass is an important forage species for the Cerrado and Amazon regions of Brazil. U. humidicola is a polyploid species with variable ploidy (6X-9X) and facultative apomixis with high phenotypic plasticity. However, this apomixis and ploidy, as well as the limited knowledge of the genetic basis of the germplasm collection, have constrained genetic breeding activities, yet microsatellite markers may enable a better understanding of the species' genetic composition. This study aimed to develop and characterize new polymorphic microsatellite molecular markers in U. humidicola and to evaluate their transferability to other Urochloa species. A set of microsatellite markers for U. humidicola was identified from two new enriched genomic DNA libraries: the first library was constructed from a single sexual genotype and the second from a pool of eight apomictic genotypes selected on the basis of previous results. Of the 114 loci developed, 72 primer pairs presented a good amplification product, and 64 were polymorphic among the 34 genotypes tested. The number of bands per simple sequence repeat (SSR) locus ranged from 1 to 29, with a mean of 9.6 bands per locus. The mean polymorphism information content (PIC) of all loci was 0.77, and the mean discrimination power (DP) was 0.87. STRUCTURE analysis revealed differences among U. humidicola accessions, hybrids, and other Urochloa accessions. The transferability of these microsatellites was evaluated in four species of the genus, U. brizantha, U. decumbens, U. ruziziensis, and U. dictyoneura, and the percentage of transferability ranged from 58.33% to 69.44% depending on the species. This work reports new polymorphic microsatellite markers for U. humidicola that can be used for breeding programs of this and other Urochloa species, including genetic linkage mapping, quantitative trait loci identification, and marker-assisted selection.
