We present a dynamic causal model that can explain context-dependent changes in neural responses, in the rat barrel cortex, to an electrical whisker stimulation at different frequencies. Neural responses were measured in terms of local field potentials. These were converted into current source density (CSD) data, and the time series of the CSD sink was extracted to provide a time series response train. The model structure consists of three layers (approximating the responses from the brain stem to the thalamus and then the barrel cortex), and the latter two layers contain nonlinearly coupled modules of linear second-order dynamic systems. The interaction of these modules forms a nonlinear regulatory system that determines the temporal structure of the neural response amplitude for the thalamic and cortical layers. The model is based on the measured population dynamics of neurons rather than the dynamics of a single neuron and was evaluated against CSD data from experiments with varying stimulation frequency (140 Hz), random pulse trains, and awake and anesthetized animals. The model parameters obtained by optimization for different physiological conditions (anesthetized or awake) were significantly different. Following Friston, Mechelli, Turner, and Price (2000), this work is part of a formal mathematical system currently being developed (Zheng et al., 2005) that links stimulation to the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal through neural activity and hemodynamic variables. The importance of the model described here is that it can be used to invert the hemodynamic measurements of changes in blood flow to estimate the underlying neural activity.

This article investigates the relation between stimulus-evoked neural activity and cerebral hemodynamics. Specifically, the hypothesis is tested that hemodynamic responses can be modeled as a linear convolution of experimentally obtained measures of neural activity with a suitable hemodynamic impulse response function. To obtain a range of neural and hemodynamic responses, rat whisker pad was stimulated using brief (less than or equal to2 seconds) electrical stimuli consisting of single pulses (0.3 millisecond, 1.2 mA) combined both at different frequencies and in a paired-pulse design. Hemodynamic responses were measured using concurrent optical imaging spectroscopy and laser Doppler flowmetry, whereas neural responses were assessed through current source density analysis of multielectrode recordings from a single barrel. General linear modeling was used to deconvolve the hemodynamic impulse response to a single "neural event" from the hemodynamic and neural responses to stimulation. The model provided an excellent fit to the empirical data. The implications of these results for modeling schemes and for physiologic systems coupling neural and hemodynamic activity are discussed.

The evaluation of free carrier concentration based on Drude's theory can be performed by the use of optical transmittance in the range 800-2000 nm (near infrared) for Sb-doped SnO2 thin films. In this article, we estimate the free carrier concentration for these films, which are deposited via sol-gel dip-coating. At approximately 900 mn, there is a separation among transmittance curves of doped and undoped samples. The plasma resonance phenomena approach leads to free carrier concentration of about 5 x 1020 cm(-3). The increase in the Sb concentration increases the film conductivity; however, the magnitude of measured resistivity is still very high. The only way to combine such a high free carrier concentration with a rather low conductivity is to have a very low mobility. It becomes possible when the crystallite dimensions are taken into account. We obtain grains with 5 nm of average size by estimating the grain size from X-ray diffraction data, and by using line broadening in the diffraction pattern. The low conductivity is due to very intense scattering at the grain boundary, which is created by the presence of a large amount of nanoscopic crystallites. Such a result is in accordance with X-ray photoemission spectroscopy data that pointed to Sb incorporation proportional to the free electron concentration, evaluated according to Drude's model. Carotid sinus baroreceptors are involved in controlling blood pressure (BP) by providing input to the cardiovascular regulatory centers of the medulla. The acute effect of temporarily placing an electrode on the carotid sinus wall to electrically activate the baroreflex was investigated. We studied 11 patients undergoing elective carotid surgery. Baseline BP was 146+30/66+/-17 mm Hg and heart rate (HR) 72+/-7 bpm (mean +/- standard deviation). An electrode was placed upon the carotid sinus and after obtaining a steady state baseline of BP and HR, an electric current was applied and increased in 1-volt increments. A voltage dependent and highly significant reduction in BP was observed which averaged 18+/-26* and 8.0+/-12 mm Hg for systolic BP and diastolic BP, respectively. Maximal reductions occurred at 4.4+/-1.2 V: 23+/-24 mm Hg*, 16+/-10 mm Hg* and 7+/-12 bpm* for systolic BP, diastolic BP and HR, respectively ( = p <.05). Thus, electrical stimulation of the carotid sinus activates the carotid baroreflex resulting in a reduction in BP and HR. This presents a proof of concept for device based baroreflex modulation in acute BP regulation and adds to the available data which provide a rationale for evaluating this system in the context of chronic BP reduction in hypertensive patients.

OBJECTIVE This study presents the first in vivo real-time optical tissue characterization during image-guided percutaneous intervention using near-infrared diffuse optical spectroscopy sensing at the tip of a needle. The goal of this study was to indicate transition boundaries from healthy tissue to tumors, namely, hepatic carcinoma, based on the real-time feedback derived from the optical measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five woodchucks with hepatic carcinoma were used for this study. The woodchucks were imaged with contrast-enhanced cone beam computed tomography with a flat panel detector C-arm system to visualize the carcinoma in the liver. In each animal, 3 insertions were performed, starting from the skin surface toward the hepatic carcinoma under image guidance. In 2 woodchucks, each end point of the insertion was confirmed with pathologic examination of a biopsy sample. While advancing the needle in the animals under image guidance such as fluoroscopy overlaid with cone beam computed tomography slice and ultrasound, optical spectra were acquired at the distal end of the needles. Optical tissue characterization was determined by translating the acquired optical spectra into clinical parameters such as blood, water, lipid, and bile fractions; tissue oxygenation levels; and scattering amplitude related to tissue density. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to study the difference in the derived clinical parameters from the measurements performed within the healthy tissue and the hepatic carcinoma. Kurtoses were calculated to assess the dispersion of these parameters within the healthy and carcinoma tissues. RESULTS Blood and lipid volume fractions as well as tissue oxygenation and reduced scattering amplitude showed to be significantly different between the healthy part of the liver and the hepatic carcinoma (P < 0.05) being higher in normal liver tissue. A decrease in blood and lipid volume fractions and tissue oxygenation as well as an increase in scattering amplitude were observed when the tip of the needle crossed the margin from the healthy liver tissue to the carcinoma. The kurtosis for each derived clinical parameter was high in the hepatic tumor as compared with that in the healthy liver indicating intracarcinoma variability. CONCLUSIONS Tissue blood content, oxygenation level, lipid content, and tissue density all showed significant differences when the needle tip was guided from the healthy tissue to the carcinoma and can therefore be used to identify tissue boundaries during percutaneous image-guided interventions.

NMR spectroscopy was used to test recent proposals that the additional energy required for brain activation is provided through nonoxidative glycolysis. Using localized NMR spectroscopic methods, the rate of C4-glutamate isotopic turnover from infused [1-(13)C]glucose was measured in the somatosensory cortex of rat brain both at rest and during forepaw stimulation. Analysis of the glutamate turnover data using a mathematical model of cerebral glucose metabolism showed that the tricarboxylic acid cycle flux [(V(TCA)] increased from 0.49 +/- 0.03 at rest to 1.48 +/- 0.82 micromol/g/min during stimulation (P < 0.01). The minimum fraction of C4-glutamate derived from C1-glucose was approximately 75%, and this fraction was found in both the resting and stimulated rats. Hence, the percentage increase in oxidative cerebral metabolic rate of glucose use (CMRglc) equals the percentage increases in V(TCA) and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption (CMRO2). Comparison with previous work for the same rat model, which measured total CMRglc [Ueki, M., Linn, F. & Hossman, K. A. (1988) J. Cereb. Blood Flow Metab. 8, 486-4941, indicates that oxidative CMRglc supplies the majority of energy during sustained brain activation.

Infrared spectroscopy has been used to study nano to micro sized gallium oxyhydroxide -GaO(OH), prepared using a low temperature hydrothermal route. Rod-like -GaO(OH) crystals with average length of ~2.5 m and width of 1.5 m were prepared when the initial molar ratio of Ga to OH was 1:3. -Ga2O3 nano and micro-rods were prepared through the calcination of -GaO(OH) The initial morphology of -GaO(OH) is retained in the -Ga2O3 nanorods. The combination of infrared and infrared emission spectroscopy complimented with dynamic thermal analysis were used to characterise the -GaO(OH) nanotubes and the formation of -Ga2O3 nanorods. Bands at around 2903 and 2836 cm-1 are assigned to the -OH stretching vibration of -GaO(OH) nanorods. Infrared bands at around 952 and 1026 cm-1 are assigned to the Ga-OH deformation modes of -GaO(OH). A significant number of bands are observed in the 620 to 725 cm-1 region and are assigned to GaO stretching vibrations.

The application of near-infrared and infrared spectroscopy has been used for identification and distinction of basic Cu-sulphates that include devilline, chalcoalumite and caledonite. Near-infrared spectra of copper sulphate minerals confirm copper in divalent state. Jahn-Teller effect is more significant in chalcoalumite where 2B1g 2B2g transition band shows a larger splitting (490 cm-1) confirming more distorted octahedral coordination of Cu2+ ion. One symmetrical band at 5145 cm-1 with shoulder band 5715 cm-1 result from the absorbed molecular water in the copper complexes are the combinations of OH vibrations of H2O. One sharp band at around 3400 cm-1 in IR common to the three complexes is evidenced by Cu-OH vibrations. The strong absorptions observed at 1685 and 1620 cm-1 for water bending modes in two species confirm strong hydrogen bonding in devilline and chalcoalumite. The multiple bands in v3 and v4(SO4)2- stretching regions are attributed to the reduction of symmetry to the sulphate ion from Td to C2V. Chalcoalumite, the excellent IR absorber over the range 3800-500 cm-1 is treated as most efficient heat insulator among the Cu-sulphate complexes.

NIR and IR spectroscopy has been applied for detection of chemical species and the nature of hydrogen bonding in arsenate complexes. The structure and spectral properties of copper(II) arsenate minerals chalcophyllite and chenevixite are compared with copper(II) sulphate minerals devilline, chalcoalumite and caledonite. Split NIR bands in the electronic spectrum of two ranges 11700-8500 cm-1 and 8500-7200 cm-1 confirm distortion of octahedral symmetry for Cu(II) in the arsenate complexes. The observed bands with maxima at 9860 and 7750 cm-1 are assigned to Cu(II) transitions 2B1g 2B2g and 2B1g 2A1g. Overlapping bands in the NIR region 4500-4000 cm-1 is the effect of multi anions OH-, (AsO4)3- and (SO4)2-. The observation of broad and diffuse bands in the range 3700-2900 cm-1 confirms strong hydrogen bonding in chalcophyllite relative to chenevixite. The position of the water bending vibrations indicates the water is strongly hydrogen bonded in the mineral structure. The strong absorption feature centred at 1644 cm-1 in chalcophyllite indicates water is strongly hydrogen bonded in the mineral structure. The H2O-bending vibrations shift to low wavenumbers in chenevixite and an additional band observed at 1390 cm-1 is related to carbonate impurity. The characterisation of IR spectra by 3 antisymmetric stretching vibrations of (SO4)2- and (AsO4)3 ions near 1100 and 800 cm-1 respectively is the result of isomorphic substitution for arsenate by sulphate in both the minerals of chalcophyllite and chenevixite.

The near-infrared (NIR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy has been applied for characterisation of three complex Cu-Zn sulphate/phosphate minerals, namely ktenasite, orthoserpierite and kipushite. The spectral signatures of the three minerals are quite distinct in relation to their composition and structure. The effect of structural cations substitution (Zn2+ and Cu2+) on band shifts is significant both in the electronic and vibrational spectra of these Cu-Zn minerals. The variable Cu:Zn ratio between Zn-rich and Cu-rich compositions shows a strong effect on Cu(II) bands in the electronic spectra. The Cu(II) spectrum is most significant in kipushite (Cu-rich) with bands displayed at high wavenumbers at11390 and 7545 cm-1. The isomorphic substitution of Cu2+ for Zn2+ is reflected in the NIR and IR spectroscopic signatures. The multiple bands for 3 and 4 (SO4)2- stretching vibrations in ktenasite and orthoserpierite are attributed to the reduction of symmetry to the sulphate ion from Td to C2V. The IR spectrum of kipushite is characterised by strong (PO4)3- vibrational modes at 1090 and 990 cm-1. The range of IR absorption is higher in Ktenasite than in kipushite while it is intermediate in orthoserpierite.

The mineral nesquehonite Mg(OH)(HCO3)2H2O has been analysed by a combination of infrared (IR) and infrared emission spectroscopy (IES). Both techniques show OH vibrations, both stretching and deformation modes. IES proves the OH units are stable up to 450C. The strong IR band at 934 cm-1 is evidence for MgOH deformation modes supporting the concept of HCO3- units in the molecular structure. Infrared bands at 1027, 1052 and 1098 cm-1 are attributed to the symmetric stretching modes of HCO3- and CO32- units. Infrared bands at 1419, 1439, 1511, and 1528 cm-1 are assigned to the antisymmetric stretching modes of CO32- and HCO3- units. IES supported by thermoanalytical results defines the thermal stability of nesquehonite IES defines the changes in the molecular structure of nesquehonite with temperature. The results of IR and IES supports the concept that the formula of nesquehonite is better defined as Mg(OH)(HCO3)2H2O.

Near infrared (NIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy have been applied to halotrichites of the formula MgAl2(SO4)422H2O, MnAl2(SO4)422H2O and ZnAl2(SO4)422H2O. Comparison of the halotrichites in different spectral regions has shown that the incorporation of a divalent transition metal into the halotrichite structure causes a shift in OH stretching band positions to lower wavenumbers. Therefore, an increase in hydrogen bonded water is observed for divalent cations with a larger molecular mass. XRD has confirmed the formation of halotrichite for all three samples and characteristic peaks of halotrichite have been identified at 18.5 and 24.5 2, along with a group of six peaks between 5 and 15 2. It has been observed that Mg-Al and Mn-Al halotrichite are very similar in structure, while Zn-Al showed several differences particularly in the NIR spectra. This work has shown that halotrichite structures can be synthesised and characterised by infrared and NIR spectroscopy.

Near infrared (NIR), infrared (IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been applied to halotrichites of the formula FeAl2(SO4)422H2O and Fe2+Fe23+(SO4)422H2O. Comparison of the halotrichites and their starting materials has been used to give a better understanding of the bonding involved in these types of minerals. The vibrational spectroscopy data has shown that Fe2+ oxidises during the formation of halotrichite, no preventative measures were implemented to prevent oxidation, and this has been clearly shown by the position and broadness of electronic bands of transition metals in the NIR spectra (12500 to 7500 cm-1). It is apparent from this region that Fe3+ substitutes for Al3+ in the synthesis of halotrichite. Due to the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ the halotrichite sample contains a small portion of bilinite. This has been confirmed by XRD, peaks at 9 and 14 2 were observed in the halotrichite sample and are identical to the XRD pattern obtained for bilinite. Substitution of aluminium for Fe3+ has resulted in significant changes in the overall infrared and NIR spectral profiles. However, the lower wavenumber regions of the NIR spectra have very similar spectral profiles, which indicate a similar structure to halotrichite has formed for bilinite. This work has shown that iron halotrichites can be synthesised and characterised by infrared and NIR spectroscopy.
