The pulsed-laser polymerization in emulsions has been simulated by the Monte Carlo method. Our simulation shows that the best measure of the propagation rate coefficients K-p is the peak maximum of molecular weight distribution for microemulsions when the droplets are small. However, the inflection point at the low-molecular-weight side of the peaks provides the best measure of K-p of bigger droplets. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cyclic oligomers containing hexafluoroiso-propylidene(HFIP) units were prepared in excellent yields by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 4,4(7)- (hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol with difluoro-monomers in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate under pseudo high dilution conditions. A combination of GPC, MALDI-TOF MS and NMR analysis confirmed the structure of the cyclic oligomers. All macrocyclic oligomers are crystalline and undergo facile melt polymerization to give high molecular weight fluorinated polyethers.

The metabolic accumulation and species of lanthanum in Wistar rat liver were investigated by ICP-MS, gel exclusion chromatography and ultrafiltration after the rats were fed by low dose of lanthanum for a long time. It was found that the content of La in the liver increased regularly with arise of dose and time of drug delivery. After the administration was stopped for a certain time a part of lanthanum in the liver Tvas metabolized, but;the metabolic rate was very slow, The lanthanum in rat liver was distributed in the soluble protein with molecular weight: of more than 60000 mostly. Rare Earth existed in the six elution peaks separated by Sephacryl S-200. The amount of lanthanum in the first elution fraction is the largest, which was 88 percent in the whole content of lanthanum in proteins with molecular weight more than 60000.

Two kinds of novel macrocyclic aryl thioether ether oligomers were synthesized by nucleophilic condensation reaction in high yields under pseudo-high-dilution condition. A combination of H-1 NMR, GPC and MALDI-TOF MS analyses unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature and their distributions, Macrocyclic thioether ether ketone oligomers can undergo facile melt ring opening polymerization(ROP) initiated by thiyl radical to give a high molecular weight polymer.

The toughness of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) blends containing various EPDM contents as a function of the tensile speed was studied. The toughness of the blends was determined from the tensile fracture energy of the side-edge notched samples. A sharp brittle-tough transition was observed in the fracture energy versus interparticle distance (ID) curves when the crosshead speed < 102.4 mm/min. It was observed that the brittle-ductile transition of PP/EPDM blend occurred either by reducing ID or by decreasing the tensile speed. The correlation between the critical interparticle distance and tensile deformation rate was compared with that between the critical interparticle distance and temperature for PP/EPDM blends. A functionalized high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with maleic anhydride (MAH) was prepared using a reactive extruding method. This copolymer was used as a compatibilizer of blends of polyamide 6 (PA6) and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Morphologies were examined by a scanning electron microscope. It was found that the dimension of UHMWPE and HDPE domains in the PA6 matrix decreased dramatically, compared with that of the uncompatibilized blending system. The size of the UHMWPE domains was reduced from 35 mu m (PA6/UHMWPE, 80/20) to less than 4 mu m (PA6/UHMWPE/HDPE-g-MAH, 80/20/20). The tensile strength and Izod impact strength of PA6/UHMWPE/HDPE-g-MAH (80/20/20) were 1.5 and 1.6 times as high as those of PA6/UHMWPE: (80/20), respectively. This behavior could be attributed to chemical reactions between the anhydride groups of HDPE-g-MAH and the terminal amino groups of PA6 in PA6/UHMWPE/HDPE-g-MAH blends. Thermal analysis was performed to confirm that the above chemical reactions took place during the blending process. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

4-Hydroxyphthalic anhydride, prepared from 4-chlorophthalic anhydride, was reacted with trimellitic anhydride monoacid chloride or arylene diacid chloride to give aromatic ester-containing dianhydrides (EDAs). These dianhydrides were characterized by element analysis, melt point, FTIR and H-1-NMR. A series of aromatic poly (amic ester acid)s was synthesized by polycondensation of these EDAs and various diamines in polar organic solvent. The inherent viscosity of poly (amic ester acid)s ranged from 0.55 to 0.89 dL/g, indicating the intermediate to higher molecular weight. Polyesterimides having glass transition temperatures between 184-219degreesC were produced by thermal imidization of corresponding poly (amic ester acid)s. These polymers were fairly resistant to organic solvent, but some of them were soluble in phenol solvents. Thermogravimetric analyses revealed that these polyesterimides were stable up to 400degreesC, and the 5% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the range of 432-483degreesC in air atmosphers and 451-490degreesC in nitrogen.

The sample solution of KNO3 is ejected into the gas phase and the ionic dusters of K+(KNO3)(n) and NO3-(KNO3)(m) we formed and observed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESIMS). The full mass spectra of both the positive ion and the negative ion show that the differences between each peak nearby are all about 101(m/z), which correspond to the molecular weight of KNO3. The general formula of the ionic clusters can be assigned as K+ (KNO3)(n) and NO3--(KNO3)(m).

A novel conducting polymer poly(phenylene sulfide-tetraaniline) (PPSTEA), with tetraaniline (TA) and phenylene sulfide (PS) segments in its repeat unit, has been synthesized through an acid-induced polycondensation reaction of 4-methylsulfinylphenyl-capped tetraaniline. The new polymer, which represents the first soluble conducting polyaniline analogue with well-defined structure, has high molecular weight, good solubility in common solvents, and good film-forming properties. Its electrical property is analogous to polyaniline. The conductivity of preliminarily, protonic-doping PPSTEA is up to 10 degrees S/cm. This synthetic strategy appears to be general for developing novel well-defined polyaniline analogue containing much longer fixed conjugation length.

Male Wistar rats were administrated orally with La(NO3)(3) at doses of 0. 05, 0. 2, 2. 0, 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight. Urine was collected over a 24 h period after dosing. Resonances for a large number of low molecular weight metabolites were assigned in a high resolution H-1 NMR spectra of rat urine. The variation of some low molecular weight metabolites in urine provided a sensitive measurement of Rare Earth induced renal and liver lesions, in which DMA, DMG, urea, Kg, TMAO, succinate, citrate and amino acids have been suggested as NMR markers for renal damage and ethanol, lactate, taurine as the markers for liver damage. The method could be applicable to study of the toxicological effects of other compounds and drugs.

Tensile properties of poly (P-hydroxybutyrate)/poly (ethylene oxide) (PHB/PEO) blends were reported in this paper. It was found that the blends of PHB with different molecular-weight PEO exhibited different mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of the blends of PHB and PEO3 (M-w=0.3x10(6)) were very poor. However, the blends of PHB and PEO5 (M-w=5x10(6)) showed compatible in mechanical properties. Excellent synergism was observed not only in tensile stress and tensile elongation but also in modulus. Moreover, the ductility of the blends could be improved further under proper heat-treatment.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. Poly(butylene succinate), (PBS) with different molecular weight was gamma -irradiated at different temperatures and various doses. PBS with high molecular weight and smaller peak area of crystal melting gave the highest gel content at the same temperatures and dose. A two-step irradiation (irradiation in molten state after irradiation at room temperature) gave the highest gel content in different conditions. This is due to the formation of network structure by pre-irradiation at room temperature that leads to less degradation. PBS prepared by two step irradiation was effective for improvement of heat stability because of high gel content formation. Unirradiated PBS sheets broke immediately at 110 degrees, while the irradiated sample (gel fraction, 50%) by a two step-method did not break even up to 200 minutes at 130 degreesC. The PBS sheets are biodegradable even after crosslinking.
